Well, we'll see if Trump backs up his talk, but he says he would debate Bernie for charity BEFORE the California Primary:
Kimmel asked Trump if he'd be willing to debate Sanders, given that Hillary Clinton had turned her primary opponent down for a California debate. Trump declared he would -- as long as the proceeds go to charity.
As he accepted the hypothetical debate, Trump asked, perhaps jokingly, how much Sanders would be willing to pay him -- for charity -- then conceded that it would be fine if a network were willing to put up the money. Trump also said he has never met Sanders.

I've said repeatedly I'd vote for Stein if I didn't live in a swing state, and that I respect people voting for her even in swing states. I'm very close to people from Honduras living without documentation in the U.S. They and I are harsh critics of Clinton for her Honduran (and other wrong foreign policy, https://gardenvarietydemocraticsocialist.com/2015/05/21/solidarity-in-th...) positions. I've written often about it.
But she's not a white nationalist, and Trump is. Trump explicitly over and over has a central premise to deport them. It's scaring them shitless. is an automatic timer that cuts the Microphone when the speakers time is up. (There could be a single use override button for the Moderator that they could push that would allow the speaker to finish a final thought if the moderator thought it was relevant and not just an effort to run out the clock.)
This seems like such an obvious solution to the problem that I am amazed that it hasn't happened yet. (The only viable reason I can think it hasn't is because it allows the moderators to even more firmly place their thumb on the scale.)
I would also like to see the Debates no longer moderated by the media, we should go back to having the League of Women voters host them like they used to. They did a phenomenal job, kept it controlled and focused on the candidates issues and positions.
This seems like it would be a worthy topic for the progressive community to start pushing into all conversations with Corporate Media.

...except using a chess clock connected to the mics. Each candidate gets XX minutes. If the candidate wants to use an extra minute or two on an issue, then that time is spent, and s/he will have to use less time on other issues. This gives more latitude in managing time re specific issues, yet still enforces a comprehensive fairness now lacking.

My thinking has been that Sanders is the better candidate. Like Trump, he acknowledges the fear and anger that the country just isn't working anymore. Unlike Trump, he can articulate a vision and solutions beyond just that anger. Can Sanders use vision and solution to beat out Trump's insult comedy? (And make no mistake, Trump is the king of Trash talk.) I think it can. A debate will put my hypothesis to the test.

But what I would like to see is each candidate presented with the same policy oriented question and allowed to answer fully and then face questions/rebuttal from the other candidate.
Trump is making up his positions on the fly out of jello while Bernie has had years to basically encounter every issue that exists and to take a position.
Bernie has to resist any attempt to turn it into a pile-on towards Clinton because that would rebound onto both Trump and Sanders and create sympathy for Hillary.

Putting the DNC aside
There would be cries and support for the "Bernie is not a real Democrat" camp. While a lot of people won't care, especially independents and new Democrats, a lot will not vote for Bernie if he is at direct odds with the party.
It would hurt more than help in every remaining primary.

They've been screaming that since day one. The DNC is nothing if not predictable.
The voters you speak of wouldn't vote for him under ANY circumstances. They'd prefer to lose with a Corpradem then win with Bernie.
The more people are engaged, the better Bernie does. Debating Trump will only ensure that more people pay freaking attention.

Unfortunately, the Dems have their propaganda machine geared up, and the Dem Leadership believes that they're one step ahead of this debacle.

I'm thrilled about this - for multiple reasons
If Bernie is willing to go outside the expected Dem protocol and debate Trump when he's NOT the "presumptive nominee" than that could indicate he no longer feels bound to his promises to the DNC after the completely unfair and unethical primary they've run. Which could potentially indicate a window for an independent run...
