My Republican Girlfriend
When I was 8 years old, the girl next door owned a pink 3-speed Schwinn bicycle. Since my family was poor and I had no bicycle at all, I fell in love. We would pedal around the neighborhood with her perched on the handlebars and me joyfully switching gears while making race car motor sounds. It was heaven.
Then came the shock of finding out she was a Republican. It was 1964. She was politically astute for an 8 year old, and decided that we should print flyers for her preferred candidate (Barry Goldwater!!) on her Ideal Printing Press. It was a toy available to rich kids ($11.44) and came with "2 sets of Type, Ink, Tweezers, Printing Plates and much more"! (Did I mention she also had an Etch-A-Sketch? Told ya I loved her!)
So we printed "Vote For Barry" flyers and took them to the local polling station and started handing them out to people coming to vote.
Alas, we were not Bill & Hillary Clinton, so it didn't take long for a poll worker to come out and chase us off, warning that there was "absolutely no campaigning within 100 feet of a poll". We slunk off, tails between our legs, too sad to shift the Schwinn above 2nd gear the whole way home.
My family, being staunch Democrats, voted for LBJ of course, and I never told her I was not a Republican. She moved away not long afterwards and I never saw her again and I never knowingly dated another Republican.
Ah, the things we do for love. And for a pink Schwinn 3-speed.

Then there are those of us
who seem to find or somehow seek out those opposites. My experience has been that I have (maybe subconsciously) found those who were conservative for my friends and lovers. Maybe it is the inborn teacher in me that attracts me to these people. Even without actively trying, I seem to have instilled some thoughts in them that they had not considered before. Over time, I saw most of them make some progress toward more open political and humane thoughts while I learned to appreciate a large diversity of people.

Edited: My wife comes from a Republican family.
But she is very liberal, and we have converted her sister to Democratic and had gotten her father to vote for Democrats before he died. Also, I applied a bit of creative license to my essay, since I didn't literally check party identification before dating someone. Although I did stay away from gun nuts and obvious right-wingers.
[Added: I wasn't sure how to respond to the comment which came across as a "holier than thou" lecture, so I kept it nice. I must say, though, that it caused a bit of a flashback to TOP, where comments are thrown without regard to the intent or substance of a diary.]
I find your response interesting.
In relating MY experience, I am judged as "holier than thou" or a TOP non-listener. In saying that you "never knowingly dated another Republican" you opened the door to my comment.
My parents are registered Democrats who voted for Reagan and who had little use for those who struggled in their lives either economically or socially. I have had great friendships with people who were way more conservative than I am. That is MY experience, but apparently has no relevance in a discussion on other's experiences.

I don't understand Mary Matalin and James Carville.

I've always thought of them as proof of alternate universes
It seems so clear to me that one of them has been teleported into the wrong place, got stuck and decided to make the best of it.

Cute story
I live in Texas and you have to have republican friends. Although, I find them pure in heart . . . just grew up in a different paradigm.
It is their preachers who lead them astray.

After all I am a rabid pro-independence Puerto Rican and grew up among pro-statehooders. Most of whom I respect and love. But marrying one? No, I need my home to be a safe place.

My Schwinn was silver
and it was too big for me. The mayor's grown daughter hit and ran me. I was concussed and bleeding when some teenagers carried me to the grocery store of the bible belt logging town in SW Washington. Days later the "cops" showed up with a new bike and said they couldn't arrest the mayor's daughter due to politics.
That's when I learned that cops are just the tools of the 1%. I should have learned my lesson long ago though that politicians, R or D, will eventually just run you the fuck over.
