Album of the Week 7-4-26

Afternoon folks!

Let's start this weekend off with a King-size bang... first up, an album from Albert King from his Stax period, then one from B.B. King accompanied by a bunch of rock musicians and studio folks in 1971. After that we have a live album recorded in the early sixties featuring a whole bunch of Chess records blues superstars. Following that is a disc of demos, outtakes and alternates from Little Feat's Last Record Album sessions. Finishing up we move into some prog rock with a live album from the band Curved Air.

Enjoy the tunes and have a great holiday weekend!

Now, the sad thing is, I read it on America’s 250th birthday and after the last 3 or 4 years of just following the news, my reaction was mostly, “Duh, Captain Obvious, does a bear sh*t in the woods? Water is wet, grass is green — tell me something I don’t already know. So what are we, or anybody, going to do about it?”

Take the field of political comic-strips. Well, there’s a few courageous commentators crying out in the wilderness, like Ted Rall:

But then there are the much ballyhooed, celebrated but ultimately cowardly, cartoonists of almost-rock-star, “cover of the Rolling Stone” level fame who seem to have “taken the ticket” and made their deal with the devil — like Garry Trudeau of Doonesbury or Dan Perkins of This Modern World who, week in, week out, are always attacking Trump-Trump-Trump but have been absolutely mum and AWOL on Benjamin Netanyahu and the Congress that gives him standing ovations — along with billions of our money — and wars — and the keys to our military and all our spy agencies.

Book review: “Robin Andersen’s indispensable new book, The Complicit Lens, offers a comprehensive examination of the media’s role in supporting the Israeli genocide in Gaza.”

for the early Albert and B.B. King, and Muddy Waters albums. They always please. I also enjoyed the shift to Little Feat’s rarities. Curved Air was a curveball I missed ; ).

@janis b

good to see you! glad you enjoyed the tunes. i've posted some curved air albums before, but the live album has a really different sound from the studio albums, much more raw and visceral than the studio performances. they're all still up at my barking cucumber youtube page.

have a good one!

predates the Stones version? The ladies chorus is great
in that rendition. Thanks!

Google says Albert King performed Honky Tonk Woman two years after the Stones. I think joe will add some interesting musical history.

yep, janis is correct, it's a (later) cover version. the back-up group is the mount zion singers, who don't appear to have a huge number of credits, but did work on one other project with the producer and songwriter don nix.

have a good one!
