Open Thread - Thurs 11 Jul 2024 - Nothing Much

Nothing Much:

I've not got much for this open thread, so I'm posting a pic of one of my lovely goats, Poppy, and a video about amazing things dogs do. And opening the thread! Post whatever you want, whatever is up. And have some fun thinking about goats and dogs Smile .

Poppy, Poppy:
She's got one of her sons still with us, Harold. She is a very, very smart goat, and learned to come get some milk from me when I was feeding her best friend, Lily, whose mother couldn't feed her. Poppy got the last of the bottle and loved it. She and Harold, her son, are very close even as she approaches 7.5 years old (faint).

poppy_19_aug_2018_sml.JPG
Poppy, giving me the look that means she's ready to be milked!

Something to Watch:
This video about dogs doing amazing things was neat to watch! It's a bit long, but dang, look at all those dogs doing all those cool things. Love the one carrying his mom's/grandmom's purse! Ohh, and sorry I couldn't embed it, the video creator doesn't allow embedding Sad .

So, that's the open thread for this Thursday. Sorry it's not more involved, I had something all ready to post, and then found out I'd posted it a few years back! Tell us what's up with you in the comments, what you are reading and learning and doing. We love to hear it!

Hope everything is going well! It is here, more or less. Heat is going down a bit, can get some field mowing done. Woot!

Have a great Thursday and let us know what's up!

@QMS

On the other hand, a good haggis is some of the best eating there is. I got addicted to the stuff on a trip to Scotland back when we used to have money to travel. My wife is half-Scottish (the other half is Irish, and she's a redhead to boot- I like a challenge, I guess). And ancestry.com tells me that I myself am 35% Scottish, so it should come as no surprise.

It's hard to get in the US, but if you have a good local butcher shop that's in on the joke, you can get it made up- sheep's stomach and all. Yum. And I'm guaranteed to get at least one dose a year, on Robert Burns night...

if it doesn't outright repeat itself, at least rhymes. Besides, people may have missed if the first time, or are perhaps ready to view it in a new light. After all, do you not play some music many times over and find new things in it now and then all the same. Ditto viewint art works.

blah, blah, blah.

I too, in a sense, got nuthin' but find new stuff in old things all the time. Just sayin. Weather folks say 97 today here, which means definitely over 100, because our place is always above the advertised value. My wife got up very early to bake bread and can apricots before the temps rise. I was sufficiently wiped out from physicval work in the garage after yesterday's picnic that I overslept mightily, but am now ready for the day, which, sadly, means back to work on all of our projects. Ah well.

As a potential category of humor in poor taste, I suggest biden jokes. Example: "Joe".

@enhydra lutris and can apricots? Your wife rocks. 100 is too hot, we hit 92 a couple days ago, that's hot for here. Too hot.

Me, I keep getting up early to let the puppy out. Maybe I should start canning when I do so, we've got a lot of berries and fruit to can.

Biden jokes? Heh. Yea, 'Joe'. Says it all in one breath.

I hope working on the projects is satisfying, even when frustrating. It's that way for me, much of the time. I am getting tired of cutting back blackberry brambles but... Can make some good jellly if the thorns don't bleed me to death...

Hi all, Hi Sima,

I gotta work but a quick drive-by... Thanks for the OT Sima. Great looking goat!

Hey QMS, I am very familiar with the Wild Haggis. Exspousius disgruntlensis, or wild hag for short. AMA.

What is interesting to me is how these cultures on opposite sides of the planet each developed these mythological beasts which seem to have been examples of convergent evolution. The wild hag shown is not far from some chupacabra images, missing large canines primarily. But these two very different cultures arrived at a very similar place.

Consider Yeti and Bigfoot. The same thing happened, very similar solutions to the 'we need a mythical beast or two' problem, from completely (we think maybe mostly) different unrelated cultures.

Of course sea monsters would be the Galapagos of such efforts.

People are strange.

Ton o' work, gotta fly!

Have good ones all!

happy trails!

You said and that song immediately popped into my head, and then you linked to the song and it was... perfection. Thank you!

I wonder how far back into the human ... hmm... not culture per say, but imagination, these creatures go. How long have humans imagined a yeti type 'beast'? I bet there are yeti-type beasts in pre-historic wall paintings and such. It's an interesting thought!

We are still without power at home. The electric co-op estimates the repairs to be finished by the end of the day tomorrow. I am not particularly hopeful, since we were told we would have power Tuesday night.
At least we can camp out at the office.
I hope everyone is ok and surviving Beryl and/or the heat wave.
Thanks, sima.

There's been a strike against Samsung Electronics since Monday.

Defying threats of replacement, thousands of Samsung workers go on indefinite strike

Thousands of workers in South Korea at Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest memory chipmaker, declared an “indefinite strike” against the company’s refusal to dialogue and listen to their demands on the last day of their three-day strike on Wednesday, July 10.

In a statement, published on the website of the National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU) which is spearheading the strike, the union told its members “don’t get tired” and continue the strike until further instructions are given.

The NSEU has around 30,000 members and represents 24% of all workers with Samsung Electronics. According to NSEU, over 6,540 workers have been participating in the different strike actions. Striking workers have held rallies in front of the factory gate on each day of the strike so far, seeking to send a message to the technology giant which has refused to listen to workers. The management even threatened to hire replacement workers if the strike does not end.

Meanwhile, around 60,000 members of Korea’s Metal Workers’ Union (KMWU) under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) went on an eight hour strike on Wednesday, July 10, The Korean Times reported.

The strike was called to oppose the business friendly policies of the Yoon Suk Yeol government. The strike is a part of trade union’s attempts to support the passing of the Trade Union and Labour adjustment Act pending in the National Assembly. The bill, if passed, would make it difficult for the management to seek compensation from workers for strike actions.

The KCTU supports the National Samsung Electronics Union strike, even though they are not formally related organizations.

Youtube sources today suggested that the source of the Li Jae-yong buying the great panda Pu Bao, back from the Chinese for 8 million dollars was "fake news"

Lee Jae-yong is dealing with what is in essence the first strike against the worlds largest chipmaker, Samsung Electronics. The second thing is Yoon's track record of claiming everything his wife has allegedly done wrong is "fake news." One of the reports from one discredited youtube source, whose reports went viral, stated that Yoon had declared he wanted to make an offer to get Pu Bao back. Yoon had just vetoed the legislation passed to investigate the coverup of the Corporal Chae drowning death. Thirdly, innocent and perhaps some not so naive people, set aside their natural skepticism about the South Korean power structure because of their interest in a panda. In a way it was a form of escapism.

Yet qui bono? Lee Jae-yong, Executive Chairman of Samsung Electronics: President Yoon Seok-yeol of South Korea; and the Korean Communications Commission. The latter has been under attack for the way it has been operated in a arbitrary and unlawful manner, to interfere with the press freedoms in South Korea.

Here's a recent article concerning the KCC-

KCC chief resigns to avoid impeachment, the second in 7 months

Kim Hong-il resigned from his position as the chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC). After following the footsteps of his predecessor, Lee Dong-kwan, by railroading all important items through without the necessary approval, Kim chose to step away from the position to avoid suspension after an impeachment bill was introduced to the National Assembly. It took only seven months for history to repeat itself...

...He added that the attempt to impeach him was no more than a “political ruse to paralyze the operations of the KCC by suspending [him] from office.”

Kim becomes the second chairperson of the KCC, appointed by Yoon himself, to resign voluntarily. On Dec. 1, 2023, Lee Dong-kwan resigned ahead of a plenary vote on an impeachment bill against him. Only six months into the job, Kim, who was appointed as Lee’s successor on Dec. 29, also chose to resign before being impeached.

The Democratic Party and four other opposition parties introduced the impeachment bill on Thursday, claiming that Kim had illegally run the commission through a “two-person system,” in which important items were forced through by two KCC commissioners, instead of the required five. If the impeachment bill passes, Kim will be suspended from office until the Constitutional Court makes a decision.

Sorry about posting fake Pu Bao news. It was the distraction du jour. I've been fooled before.

(I edited this post to remove one link because although it was a "fake news" report on Lee Jae-yong, this report on corrective action taken by a KCC subcommittee didn't refer specifically to the Pu Bao story. In fact, in all my browsing through videos on this panda, I cannot find one reliable source).

I had seen something like this on one of those you tube video shorts but I couldn't read any of the signs so I didn't know which organization it was. There is some westerner who regularly posts these street demo shorts, but he never identifies the group or groups involved or the date(s).

Appreciate you posting this video of the NSEU strikers Humphrey. Their discipline is incredible. They put it on the line because the company is allowed to sue the union for lost revenue due to the strike. Some metal worker unionists were prosecuted on some pretext for going on strike several months back if recall correctly. One of them committed suicide by setting himself on fire outside the courthouse or whatever public office they had been summoned to. It's unfortunate that the chaebol have this lock on the public prosecutors offices and legal tools to coerce union members.

I had seen one or two videos of dogs in the South Korean countryside that were in the habit of going to the local street market by themselves to pick up or deliver some food item for the owner at home. They would bring some money, the vendor then would put the goods into their basket or pouch and then bring it home or vice versa.

I see the collar on the Chinese dog says, my name is 多多 Duō Duō. lol.
