Friday Night Photos Cowles Mountain Close-ups Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 06/28/2024 - 5:00pm
Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any and all photos, memes, or music that trips your trigger.
Needing to shed some excess pounds and being burned out on riding the bike, I recently started hiking up Cowles Mountain, a 1593 ft speed bump on the Earth's surface located in Mission Trails Regional Park, a short drive from where I live. I was pleasantly surprised to see many of the spring wildflowers were still in bloom. On Monday I decided to forgo exercise for photography and tried to capture some of the more interesting looking flowers growing along the trail. I have no clue what type of flowers most of these are other than very small.
I don't know what this is. I do know I wouldn't want to sit on one.

your speed bump found some very delicate flowerations.
Thanks for sharing them with us!
Went for a boat ride today, too busy training the new capitan
to take any shots of the river, but got land-bound after.
Ancient anchors aweigh ..
question everything
Hi, QMS.
Hope it was a good boat ride even if you didn't get any photos.
After graduating HS I spent 4 years playing anchors aweigh. Got to go to some great places during that time. Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Philippines, Singapore.

It looks as if you will soon have 2 new subjects for future
photos.
Hi, humphrey
Glad to see the Pandas have returned to the zoo. I think it's been about a half dozen years since the last time they had Pandas there.

Hmm, China-Bears

Is that threatening to US scaredy cats?
Better sanction them PDQ.
question everything
How would you sanction Pandas?
Maybe no more bamboo for you.
Love the cat.

Thanks for the laugh, Q!
I often picture images of the NE, and they are always beautiful. I trust you're enjoying the beauty.
The Fu Bao saga
This panda born from parents lent from China, and born in South Korea returned to China a few months ago. After separation from its beloved Korean keeper and two month quarantine it was said to be suffering from depression. The beloved panda is said to be positively responsive to South Korean tourists visiting in China who go to see Fu Bao (because it is missing its trainer?). The large number of spectators who come to see Fu Bao has to be limited.
This AP article has a number of interesting pics of Fu Bao's life-

Hi soryang
Thank you for the wonderful video and introduction to Fu Bao. She looks pretty content.
I could use a giant panda here to help in my battle with the bamboo ; ).
Good evening SP, great pics. last one could be a
phacelia, like maybe caterpillar phacelia. Thanks for the pics and the music.
be well and have a good one

Hi, EL
I think you're right on the ID on the last shot. I know when I saw it, I thought it looked like a green caterpillar.

Hi pixelators
Hi all, Hey SP!
Outstanding flower photos SP. Love the Monkey Flower. Did you touch the leaves? Sticky. Nothin' like it. The lowest red one, I am pretty sure is Columbine. Been too long now since I did any CA botany. Have replaced it with TX stuff. For summer flowers elevation is key. As spring fades in lowlands, middle altitudes are still going. And when they are over the higher altitudes are best. The high Sierra don't peak until later June and in July. I would expect say up on Mt. Palomar in the drainages along creekbeds (some nice trails there) it is still blooming well or better. A few thousand feet elevation and its peak bloom all over again.
Awesome shots man!
happy trails all!

I didn't touch the Monkey Flower
I'll take your word for it that it's sticky. I did look up Columbine but the images didn't look like the flower I posted, which to me kinda look like little megaphones.

Hey SP
It is the leaves of the Monkey Flower that are weirdly sticky. Good ID character.
A Columbine that looks like this is common in CA:

Which I thought resembled yours.

Hi Social
That must have been a long walk, to have discovered so many different flowering plants. The pleasure of exploring with a camera on a walk is such a satisfying experience. Thank you for all the little things you find and photograph. The last photo is a mystery. It looks like caterpillars or soft fuzzy fern fronds. But then there’s that one last lavender bloom at the top?
Oh, and the music was great! What a voice. The guitar and brass accompaniment wasn't too shabby either. From the first comment on the youtube video you posted ...
Hi, Janis
The walk wasn't long distance wise, maybe 1.5 miles up and back, but it was long time wise. I spent almost 2 hours slow walking the trail looking for suitable subjects, and I agree, it's very satisfying to go exploring with a camera.

Hi Janis!
Bill Wyman, Rolling Stones bassist 62-93 just released a new album, three days ago!
He was 'the old Stone', and is now 87. Mick and Keith are 80 and touring now!

That's a great tune. The lyrics and beat are really playful. I guess music and ozone keeps you young ; ).
Evening all
A few random shots
Enjoy the weekend and be well.
Hey J!
LOVE the web photo! Those orb weavers do awesome work. Great lines in the sand too! Is it raining in the last one? Looks like temperate rain forest. I guess winter is upon you now? We're melting in TX.
take care, be well!

Hi d
I'm glad you enjoyed ; ).
The spider web was taken on a close to frosty morning this week. The Waitakere Ranges of Auckland are a subtropical temperate rainforest. The photo shows a Puriri tree with abundant blooms, a bit unusual for this time of year. It was taken as the sun was setting on a clear day.
Better move underground before you totally melt away, we'd miss you ; ).
A very nice selection
of random shots, Janice. How big is that spider web? It looks huge.

Thanks Social
The spider web was around 14"x10".
That's a pretty good size web

Hi pixelators
Here are a couple flowers ...
Probably posted these before, hopefully long enough ago that we forgot...
Sneezeweed. When I point this one out I like to suggest they take a big strong nose hit off of it so we can discuss ideas on how it got its name.
Coreopsis (L) and Indian Blanket (R) aka Firewheel
Wooly Ironweed - ours is just past peak bloom this year.
Lemon Beebalm aka Purple Horsemint
Thanks for the OT SP!
have good ones all!

A tour with you would be so much fun
One would have to be prepared to sneeze and laugh at the same time.
Now, if anyone sneezes it triggers fear in many people. Glad you got the fun in when fun was still possible.
Hi, dystopian
Nice selection of wildflowers. That Firewheel is aptly named.

Hi , you all, surprisingly I am still not dead, is that good
news or bad news for all you flowerly pixel lovers?
well, I learned a lot, being for two weeks in a hospital with a huge bunch of old sick people and a fantastic bunch of caretakers on the hospital floor.for geirtric cased Never experienced more patient folks tham them. And the older the better and the more funny.
First rule, don't believe any of them (them being the doctors and caretakers.. because all they want is to convince you that your brain is not working as it should. the doctors test you constantly. And then they can't handle you, if it the brain is still working, just not in the same way as their's.
OK, it is fine to find you all here. As an advice if you absolurtele need to be sick, just don't choose it be your brain. Because they simply can't handle if your brain is still working as it should.
Happy to see you all again.

Hi, Mimi
You still being alive is most definitely a good thing. Sorry to hear you had to spend 2 weeks in the hospital. Hope you're feeling better now.

Well, it's starting to crank up in
Helped a very dear friend with her downsizing market sale the last couple of days. We got t-storms throughout the whole O-ville area. We always need the rain cos it cools it down around here. Anywho, T and Rec'd!!

Hi, orlbucfan
It seems weird hearing you talk about your storm season beginning in summer. Here in the lower left corner our storm season, such as it is, runs from late fall to early spring. Hope Mother Nature goes easy on you this year.

Hi obf
I remember well the afternoon t-storms during the time I spent with my mom in Florida, in summer. They usually were fairly brief flashes in the pan, and then it would feel a bit fresher for a short time before the humidity built up again. I hope the hurricanes stay far out to sea away from you and any land.
You always surprise me mimi,
and make me smile. I can imagine how challenging for your brain and spirit communicating with German hospital doctors can be. You've got them all beat. I'm glad the other helpers provided the human gift of comfort and care.
See you again soon I hope
xox
xox back to you, dear friend, I have to defend the hospital
doctors. They were very friendly. They just test you over and over again to remember three words.Oh well, I forgot them all, the three words. I think they were 'Blume', 'Auto' amd 'Kerze'. They used this test at least 5 times, I guess their brains were very 'forgetful', not mine.

I'm smiling again mimi
at how your brain waves playfully at doctors and what's real. You shine as brightly as a Kerze.
