In the battle of Puebla. It is celebrated today by both Chicanos and Gringos.
In a blow to imperialism, the Zapotec and Mestizo forces prevailed in a
symbolic fight of resistance.

Americanos tend to celebrate with Mexican cuisine and refreshments.

Cervesa, , Margueritas, Tequila are popular drinks. Mole Poblano, guacamole, tacos,
burritos, tamales, chalupas, chullos, fajitas, chili rellanos and pepitas are popular foods.
Viva la revolution!

Hola Cap'n Q. Gracias por el OT sobre Cinco de Mayo.
It is also our 25th anniversary so my wife and I shall romp out east to the nearby town of Livermore and lunch at a nice restaurant that is in/at a winery in celebration. May is quite a month beyond May Day, May 2 was the uprising against the French in Madrid celebrated in Goya's "2nd of May 1808" (fight against the Mamelukes), the bloody reprisals against the Madrileños celebrated in Goya's "Third of May", the Murder of student protesters at Kent State on the Fourth, and the battle of Puebla on the 5th. A streak of unrest, uprisings, reprisals and retaliations all quite worthy of note.
Meanwhile, locally, we have some serious morning mist which will help slow the drying out of everything. WE are also witnessing some ecological/biology lesson at work. For many months our immediate neighborhood was saturated with pocket gophers. About 60% of the residents were actively setting traps, with some success but with no overall progress. Over the last month stray and feral cats have showed up in increasing numbers and the gopher numbers have plummeted. Our yard cams show 4 of them regularly patrolling our yard at night, co-existing nicely with the o'possums and raccoons that wander through and we have zero gophers. One neighbor still has some and yesterday evening we watched one of the cats that hang out here overnight go over there and catch and kill one. We haven't noticed any bird kills, so they seem to be specialists.

Happy anniversary
E2 and I have our 25th anniversary being together come next February.
Thanks for reminding me to start planning something special.
I too have problems with gophers, which probably explains the hoot owls taking up residence here. I have mowed the grass so it exposes them more readily. Hope that works because they have made it to the garden enclosure.

When I had a problem with gophers
I put a sonic spike in the yard. The gophers were gone in a few days.

Our gophers don't seem overly bothered by sonic spikes,
maybe being more or less urban with all kinds of traffic rumble they got inured to it.

Similar to the 'greater Israel' project

The US annexed one half of Mexican territory which
included many indigenous lands during the time of
prez Polk using the Monroe doctrine playbook.

The Mexicans
seem to be taking it back. The Latino population is increasing bigly in those states.
Of course, many Mexican landowners never left after the war, but became citizens, IIRC.
Those returning simply say "I like what you've done with the place".

California, especially from the Bay Area South, while
multicultural and polyglot has a cultural bond to Mexico that was not severed bu the US conquest of our territory, especially since some of the original colonists had become "Californios", seeking and acting out a much greater degree of self governance than they has as "alta California". Unlike Texas, we did not willingly join the USA, we were conquered.

Damned good effort, friend!
When in San Antonio, or Mexico, I ask the Mariachis to play Cucarucucu, Paloma.
A Hispanic attorney introduced me to this song almost 40 years ago on The River Walk in San Antonio.
