Do you remember how there was global outrage after the Panama Papers exposed a massive international tax evasion scheme involving many high-profile wealthy elites, leading to mass incarcerations and sweeping overhauls to the world’s taxation and legal systems?

No?

How about the huge scandal when it was revealed that the CIA unilaterally funds its own clandestine operations via secret drug trafficking programs to circumvent the oversight of elected bodies, leading to the dismantling and disbanding of the entire CIA? Or the time WikiLeaks exposed war crimes leading to tribunals at The Hague and a complete restructuring of the US military? Or all the criminal investigations and paradigm-shattering arrests after we learned that powerful intelligence agencies have been using child sex slaves to manipulate our society via blackmail?

Biden’s speech Wednesday night to a joint session of Congress provided a portrait of panic, crisis and desperation on the part of the American ruling class. And more significant than the various calls for reform measures, a far more important and sinister strategic perspective was elaborated throughout: to create the political framework for a confrontation with China to maintain, if necessary through war, the global hegemony of American imperialism.

The Biden administration has finally admitted that the US is indeed providing offensive material support to Saudi Arabia’s genocidal assault on Yemen, directly contradicting Biden’s February claim that it would no longer be providing offensive support in that war. We are being lied to about yet another US war by yet another US president.

On the show this week, Chris Hedges discusses police abuse and torture with civil rights attorney Flint Taylor.

With his colleagues at the People's Law Office, Taylor has argued landmark civil rights cases exposing the corruption and cover-up within the Chicago Police Department and throughout the city's political machine from the alderman to the mayor's office. The book takes the reader from the 1969 murder of Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton and Panther Mark Clark - and the historic thirteen-year trial that followed - through the pursuit of chief detective Jon Burge, the leader of a torture ring within the Chicago Police Department that used barbaric methods, including electric shock and suffocation, to elicit false confessions from suspects - a violation of the UN Convention against Torture. Taylor and People's Law Office gathered evidence to bring suit against the Chicago Police Department, breaking the department's "code of silence" that had enabled decades of cover-ups. The legal precedent they set has since been adopted in human rights legislation around the world.

Sadly, the trend of fatal police shootings in the United States seems to only be increasing, with a total 213 civilians having been shot, 30 of whom were Black, in the first three months of 2021. In 2020, there were 1,021 fatal police shootings, and in 2019 there were 999 fatal shootings. Additionally, the rate of fatal police shootings among Black Americans was much higher than that for any other ethnicity, standing at 35 fatal shootings per million of the population as of March 2021.

Well after all that US aggression how about a trip to the farm?

This week let's look at a 1.5 acre permaculture homestead in New Zealand... (25 min)

Syntropic farming is a new and ancient permaculture practice that can be implemented in any region, in any climate, in limitless ways – even in your own back yard. For over a decade the Lotz-Keegan family have been implementing permaculture practices to regenerate a degraded hillside into an abundant food forest of native and exotic trees that feed their family, their community, the wildlife, the soil, and their souls.

Combining the practices of syntropic agroforestry with the principles of permaculture and their own deeply thoughtful approach to land regeneration, food growing, and lifestyle, this family is partnering with nature to create a humming diversity on the land and a positive story about the role of humans in an eco-system.

Sometimes the reality of farming and homesteading is lost in these short clips. This family farm shows some of the issues. There is always something happening...

Here's hoping your world is filled with peace, love, and harmony despite the whirlwind of war and aggression around us. I look forward to your thoughts and ideas below.

We are the monster. The Bully of the universe. Our intent is to steal whatever anybody else has. At whatever cost to individuals or countries not named USA. Modern day Vikings--invade. occupy. destroy. enslave. We claim our "heroes" are our warriors, but warriors are tools, thus, victims as well.

The Winners are the wealthy class of the world and in their efforts to continue to rule, there are no rules. Small towns as well as every city in America get free, used military equipment. The citizenry is the enemy of the rulers.

Nothing new but alarming every time we force ourselves to see it.

The posting from 1992 gets it right. These days I content myself with the positive measures Joe Biden has taken domestically and have given up entirely on hoping for foreign policy improvements.

Bright spot is that I met my goal of being fully planted by May first. On chilly nights I lug my plants inside. Very good news is that the 3 large pots of sunflowers I planted have sprouted! Which indicates to me that more can flourish on my balcony than I had imagined. Not prematurely celebrating, however. Sprouts are one thing and flowering plants known to need more sun than my high floor balcony provides are another.

When they are little...in and out, in and out. I use the utility room with a south window and holds the hot water heater as my grow room.

Once they are big enough, I take them down to the garden in flats and let them acclimate, sometimes covering with row cover for cold spells. Then out into the beds when the weather is right.

Got tomatoes in the beds yesterday and peppers today. I plant in the evening. Just my routine, wouldn't work with your balcony scene. Although I've been thinking about a rolling grow shelf for all the in and out.

Your political insights are dead on from my perspective.

Lot for me to go back and delve into all the information you have put in this week’s OT. I am glad you always end with going back to nature and ideas for living in a better place. We had major rains for the past two days and I discovered I have three leaks in my roof running along one of the seams of the metal roof. This part of the roof is old and now more decisions on the house have to be made.

So, decided to take your advice and get back to nature, will take a walk along the river and check out the flow over the impoundment as I cross the bridge. This always works to restore my soul and then will have an hour long stretch and strengthen session via Zoom to make it easier to look at the day ahead. It is also bright and sunny outside at the moment and the weatherman says it is going to heat up this afternoon.

Great and greatly appreciated video on syntropic farming. It is full of bits of information and inspiration that anybody can apply, on some scale, providing only that they have a bit of dirt whereon to apply it. I'm already thinking of a corner weed-bed that we can maybe help to evolve into something more productive ecologically and possibly for food too.

Loved your wood thrush soundscape. We don't get them here, just a migrant hermit thrush for a short while. Our dawn chorus is a bit harsher with jays, crows, nuthatches and brown towhees modulated by other birds, but always a bit more clangorous. The songbirds we do have bring in the raptors which then bring in the crows, so, at some time, there will be nearby mobbing.

be well and have a good one.

@mimi Hi Mimi,

All good birders bird by ear more than eye. You hear 10 birds for every one you see. Virtually all good bird guides know everything they hear. Any population survey work has to be done with audio. Lots of birders have a hard time with it, but there are lots of new books (even a Petersen field guide series guide to bird calls) and many new guides have digital versions with audio apps that can help.

I learned from infancy, it is a language to me, generally my recognition is the first syllable of the first word, and based on tonal quality above all else. Many say the same
words, but they all say them differently. Each has its own voice. There are contact calls, alarm calls, flight notes, 'he is putting more seed out' calls, and many others, before we even get to songs, of which many birds have A and B types. Generally all subspecies of a species each have a different dialect as well, which is why tonal quality works best over what words they say. There are some birds you HAVE TO HEAR to identify, or, it is the easiest way to ID them. For me it is as big as visual aspects. Too see some birds without hearing them is tragedy. Imagine not hearing a Kookabura or Lyrebird.

I still hear new calls that in 65 years of paying serious attention I have not heard. So you can't learn every sound all of them make. As one that has worked as a pro guide,
my audio skills are surely what blows the people away the most, all the time. But I can tell you there are guys better than me. And I know zip squat about Euro bird calls. I am working on a audio cd of bird sounds, is far I have gone down this rabbit hole.

came late to birding by ear (my late 20's), but I recognize most calls in our woods. I admire those with your ability and knowledge and treasure those birding trips with your ilk.

Though I enjoy trips to Mexico and Central America for exotic birds, I'm quite happy with our locals and transients. Currently we have summer and scarlet tanagers nesting as well as a couple of pair of piliated woodpeckers. If I don't see them I hear them daily. We also have the usual suspects...lots of phoebes, cardinals, titmouse, nuthatch, and so on. Been seeing some rain crows (cuckoos) too. And of course the rarely seen but oft heard vireo..."here I am where are you?" Oh yeah and barred owls on the regular..."who cooks for you?"

Thanks for all your birding expertise around the site!

@Lookout Your place sounds world-class awesome L.O. Scarlet Tanager are hard to beat! I have Summer nesting here, nice, but Scarlet is one the most stunningly beautiful birds in America. Great call that Pileated Woodpecker has, outstanding birds in a class by themselves. Rain-bird was a good name for Yellow-billed Cuckoo, they sure go off when it is about to rain, or gonna soon. You call description of the vireo is Red-eyed Vireo. An old name was Preacherbird, because they never stop all day. You should have White-eyed
and Yellow-thoated Vireo there too. We have all three here on the Edwards Plateau, but which is the western most extension of their breeding range in southerly latitudes. We also have Bell's, Hutton's, and Black-capped. I only have Chucks here, no Whips. Chucks seem way down so far this year. Bugpocalypse has been apparent a few years to me, and surely the insectivores will go first.

I never get to see them. They are buried in the green of the forest. Habitat is the trick to have good birds as you know. We have both deep woods and open fields, I think that is key to bird, animal, plant diversity. Additionally we had shale ridge, limestone valley, and sandstone mountain. If you're ever in the NE AL area, pm me and come by. Would love to go birding together.

dystopian's picture

@Lookout Habitat diversity is everything. The 'juniper breaks' are fairly low-diversity. Any mono-culture, even natural, has lower diversity, but of course often lots of specialized endemics.

For vireo songs... oOf course the Red-eyes are up high, and so are the Yellow-throated, but often coming down lower on biggest low branches. White-eyed is a bird of the thickets down low. You hear a dozen for every one you see. I hate having to find and show one to someone. LOL Yellow-throated song has been written varyingly as "three-eight" being a key phrase. It differs from all other vireos in being burry. The others are a much clearer clean whistled or musical notes. Yellow-throated has a vibrato of burriness that is distinct. YT is deep and slow delivery too. One phrase to me sounds like 'VIR-E-O' - three syllables

White-eyed is fast with a jumble between two sharp inflicted notes. One good birder said they say: "quick! lets see your (insert slang for female breasts)!" I use 'bricks' myself in mixed company.

Variety of habitat is key to diversity. The small meadow opening in a huge forest has more diversity than the forest. Just like the reef at edge of sea has more diversity than the big ol' ocean past it. The edge effect is everything. I am where the south Texas brush country (Tamaulipan thorn-scrub) meets the Edwards Plateau (much known as hill country). Mesquite, meet Juniper, plus live-oaks and Pecans.

When you go through the Edwards Plateau ya gotta look me up! You need to see Golden-cheeked Warbler. Wink I'm between Garner St. Pk. and Lost Maples S.N.A. near south edge of plateau, 20 miles N. of Hwy. 90. March to June is the best 3 months of birding here, and April to June really. Big Bend is out of this world awesome. I did the Colima Warbler Chisos Mtns. thing a long time ago. I would love to get back to traveling, but have not done any in a couple decades. Maybe it was that million miles I did the couple prior? I loved Alabama, and never got to spend proper time there, was always on the way somewhere, snagged a day here and day there sorta thing, and mostly in the south. Off the charts freshwater habitats diversity ya got there. Great dragonfly diversity!

Any of ya here that have natural history interest, if you get near my area, please feel free to PM me, I can be a barrel of fun for a short while, especially if it is light out and there is nature around.

@mimi I would love to learn the Euro birds. Exposure is the key. Repetition. Keep listening, and watch to see what makes what sounds. Watch them sing and call to help burn it onto your hard-drive. It should be way easier there, than here. You have one wren, we have a dozen, you have one Jay, dozen here, you have one swallow, 10 here, and on and on. There are a few groups with lots of diversity there like the 'old-world warblers', the buntings and finches, the tits, for instance, but in any given area you probably have a couple or few dozen species to learn, more if a wild natural habitat of course. Every hawk, duck, shorebird, they all have unique voices. I have many birds on my yard list which I only heard at night as they migrated overhead. Many birders are into night recording and then ID'ing everything that went over from the 'tapes' the next day.

Most people can tell all their relatives apart simply by voice, without seeing them. You can learn that with birds, grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids, or amphibians. Interestingly other vocal animals are no different. The other birds in the forest no doubt learn the NINE different alarm calls Black-capped Chickadee gives for nine different
threats.

I once read of an indigenous person in the Amazon saying to a white visitor something to the effect of, 'how can you sleep at night not knowing what everything is?'. They know every bug, frog, bird, everything. I know some of my local insects, all my local frogs and toads, but if I moved would have to learn a new set. Which has been one of the great things about moving around the country a few times for me.

that these are the words that Power uses to bury the truth, and I become curious to learn more.

Creating a term for outlandish or blatantly false ideation, and then associating an uncomfortable truth that threatens the interests of Power to that term, is meant to preempt further investigation.

Uncomfortable truths can be found under the banner of “Conspiracy Theory”, in among the outlandish and blatantly false exemplars. This is why I am attracted TO any news items waving that banner. It’s where the bodies of the murdered may be found.

I discussed in this piece...

So it may come as no surprise that there is even a conspiracy theory about the origins of the label. This conspiracy theory claims that the CIA invented the term in 1967 to disqualify those who questioned the official version of John F Kennedy’s assassination and doubted that his killer, Lee Harvey Oswald, had acted alone.

@ovals49 "Power" is not "Satan" - except maybe in the LaVeyan sense.

I HAAAAATE this new Medieval-Catholicism-in-Postmodern-Clothing political religion that (in addition to countless other crimes) always talks about "power" like it's bad - and not even that, they conflate it almost exclusively with SOCIAL power, which ISN'T EVEN REAL! That kind of thinking is a TRAP - exactly the sort of thing Nietzsche so insightfully pegged as "slave morality". To paraphrase the NRA, if you hold that power corrupts, then only the corrupt will hold power.

You will never have a greater or lesser dominion than that over yourself...the height of a man's success is gauged by his self-mastery; the depth of his failure by his self-abandonment. ...And this law is the expression of eternal justice. He who cannot establish dominion over himself will have no dominion over others.

and likely a worthy subject to discuss, but opening with HAAAAATE! hardly invites any discussion. Apparently “power” means something other than what I find in the dictionary. I feel like I inadvertently stepped on a land mine. Did it have something to do with the capital P? Inscrutable.

This story was told in a 2002 Harper's Magazine article called Dick Cheney's Song of America.

.

Few writers are more ambitious than the writers of government policy papers, and few policy papers are more ambitious than Dick Cheney’s masterwork. It has taken several forms over the last decade and is in fact the product of several ghostwriters (notably Paul Wolfowitz and Colin Powell), but Cheney has been consistent in his dedication to the ideas in the documents that bear his name, and he has maintained a close association with the ideologues behind them. Let us, therefore, call Cheney the author, and this series of documents the Plan.

The Plan was published in unclassified form most recently under the title of Defense Strategy for the 1990s, as Cheney ended his term as secretary of defense under the elder George Bush in early 1993, but it is, like Leaves of Grass, a perpetually evolving work. It was the controversial Defense Planning Guidance draft of 1992 — from which Cheney, unconvincingly, tried to distance himself — and it was the somewhat less aggressive revised draft of that same year. This June it was a presidential lecture in the form of a commencement address at West Point, and in July it was leaked to the press as yet another Defense Planning Guidance (this time under the pen name of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld). It will take its ultimate form, though, as America’s new national security strategy — and Cheney et al. will experience what few writers have even dared dream: their words will become our reality.

The Plan is for the United States to rule the world. The overt theme is unilateralism, but it is ultimately a story of domination. It calls for the United States to maintain its overwhelming military superiority and prevent new rivals from rising up to challenge it on the world stage. It calls for dominion over friends and enemies alike. It says not that the United States must be more powerful, or most powerful, but that it must be absolutely powerful.

The Plan is disturbing in many ways, and ultimately unworkable. Yet it is being sold now as an answer to the “new realities” of the post–September 11 world, even as it was sold previously as the answer to the new realities of the post–Cold War world. For Cheney, the Plan has always been the right answer, no matter how different the questions.

.

Without a doubt the biggest irony of this story that explains the last 20 yeears of American decline is that the ex-Director of the CIA and the guy who launched the First Gulf War, George Herbert Walker Bush, kyboshed this craziness. Slick, the feckless draft avoider, gave us his triangulated version of Bad Ass Policy which was demonstrated by the war against Serbia fought without US soldiers on the ground. Neither President in office immediately after the Cold War bought this concept of Full Spectrum Dominance.

No, Cheney had to make himself Vice President via the Supreme Court installing Shrub and him in power to live this demented dream -- shared by Alexander the Great and Adolf Hitler -- of ruling the world.

I submit that Cheney was the last politician in this country ever to wield any actual power as an individual, and it took September 11 for him to get his shot at living out his dream. His success put the final nail in the coffin of American Democracy and the rest is history.

Just like the United States of America is history, replaced by our rotting Empire of Futility, falling apart at the seems around us right now.

New Zealand has upset its partners in the Five Eyes global spy alliance by not joining recent pile-ons aimed at China. New Zealand says it's because spies shouldn't be talking about human rights, but it's probably more to do with the fact that Beijing represents 29% of its trade, and principles cost money.

If there is to be any diplomacy better just to let Lavrov and Blinken work things out. Or military to military contacts.

Any meeting between Putin and Biden will turn into a circus with Western and US media attempting to escalate attacks on Putin by Biden and his admin. Trump got majorly skewered by the press for just meeting with Putin in Finland and for not personally insulting Putin. The American media will go hysterical for a major confrontation. I wouldn't be surprised if new sanctions would be announced on Nord Stream 2.

The summit will end up making relationship even worse putting it on a near war footing.

@MrWebster

Consider Bushy Sr's promise not to expand NATO?

Did the United States promise the Soviet Union during the 1990 negotiations on German reunification that NATO would not expand into Eastern Europe? Since the end of the Cold War, an array of Soviet/Russian policymakers have charged that NATO expansion violates a U.S. pledge advanced in 1990; in contrast, Western scholars and political leaders dispute that the United States made any such commitment. Recently declassified U.S. government documents provide evidence supporting the Soviet/Russian position. Although no non-expansion pledge was ever codified, U.S. policymakers presented their Soviet counterparts with implicit and informal assurances in 1990 strongly suggesting that NATO would not expand in post–Cold War Europe if the Soviet Union consented to German reunification. The documents also show, however, that the United States used the reunification negotiations to exploit Soviet weaknesses by depicting a mutually acceptable post–Cold War security environment, while actually seeking a system dominated by the United States and opening the door to NATO's eastward expansion. The results of this analysis carry implications for international relations theory, diplomatic history, and current U.S.-Russian relations.

the latest Chinese satellite launch.

China's ISS Competitor Begins Construction In Orbit

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06GUEkc4EEA]

This happened under Obama's administration.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_exclusion_policy_of_NASA

Since 2011, the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has excluded the Chinese government or any organisations affiliated with China in any capacity, even non-political, from its activities, including using funds to host Chinese visitors at NASA facilities.

In May 1999, the Report of the Select Committee on U.S. National Security and Military/Commercial Concerns with the People's Republic of China was made public. It alleged that the technical information that American companies provided China for its commercial satellite ended up improving Chinese intercontinental ballistic missile technology.

In 2010, Rep. John Culberson urged President Barack Obama not to allow further contact between NASA and the China National Space Administration (CNSA). In a letter addressed to the President, he wrote:

I have grave concerns about the nature and goals of China’s space program and strongly oppose any cooperation between NASA and CNSA’s human space flight programs without Congressional authorization.[2][3]

In April 2011, the 112th United States Congress banned NASA from engaging in bilateral agreements and coordination with China.[1] As stated under Public Law 112–10, Sec. 1340:

(a) None of the funds made available by this division may be used for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or the Office of Science and Technology Policy to develop, design, plan, promulgate, implement, or execute a bilateral policy, program, order, or contract of any kind to participate, collaborate, or coordinate bilaterally in any way with China or any Chinese-owned company unless such activities are specifically authorized by a law enacted after the date of enactment of this division. (b) The limitation in subsection (a) shall also apply to any funds used to effectuate the hosting of official Chinese visitors at facilities belonging to or utilized by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration

In 2013, officials at NASA Ames prohibited Chinese nationals from attending Kepler Science Conference II. A number of American scientists boycotted the meeting, with senior academics either withdrawing individually or pulling out their entire research groups.[4] Rep. Frank Wolf wrote a letter to NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden, saying that the restriction only applied to bilateral meetings and activities between NASA and the Chinese government or Chinese-owned companies, whereas Kepler Science Conference II is a multilateral event.[5] NASA later reversed the ban and admitted a mistake in barring individual Chinese nationals who did not represent their government in official capacity.

Hi LO, and all,

Hat tip for the Wood Thrush! Lots of birders think it has the best song of any North American bird. Being amongst a bunch singing is heaven. Lucky you! All of our thrushes make up for somber looks fitting for denizens of the shady forest, with incredible vocalizations. The Swainson's and Hermit Thrush, and Veery all have amazingly beautiful songs. Ethereal voices of the angels. Bluebirds are thrushes and have those beautiful melodic sounds they make, though not as complex as the other thrushes. Solitaires are thrushes as well, and have great voices as well. Especially the Brown-backed Solitaire of Mexico.

Folks, you can go to www.xeno-canto.org and hear any bird you want. Type name in search bar hit go. Then I right click the numbers on right column to open individual songs in new tab and keep main species index page open. When the song opens, click the play button.

Enjoy yer thrushes!

Missed them last year. Don't know if they were blown elsewhere but were not here. Making up for it this year. Quite the pleasure!

Funny about the whippoorwills however. Last year they rebounded after what I hypothesized was a coyote decimation of these ground nesters. This year rare again. An occasional chuck will widow but no whippoorwills. Curious the turnings. Canaries in the coal mine?

Thanks again.

of the year yesterday. That makes them a week later than usual. The last of the permafrost outside our north-facing front door finally melted off last week, and even the aspen and our ginko have started to bud.

Which means that the time is now perfect for the Mother's Day snowstorm that strips all the weak branches from all the non-native plantings that bud too early. We never do any outdoor planting at all until after Mother's Day. Actually, that's not true- we never do any planting until we see the scrub oak starting to green up. That's the best metric for when nature thinks that it is okay, around these parts- even the aspen are, shall we say, a bit optimistic. The lady across the street has now replanted her front yard decorative annuals three times...

On edit: and it is now snowing. Well, there you go.
