Well, we just rejoined the Paris Accord and the Keystone Pipeline is canceled. Power plant emissions will be cut.
No more racist baiting. No more tweets. I for one have some modicum of hope and am going to find a niche to slip into and do some real work for the environment. Do I think we can stop this monster of a climate crisis from happening? No. But I intend to do something because I really have no choice. So there’s that.
Just for starters we have an administration that believes in science. That means we can do something about COVID-19 and The Climate Crisis. For me the latter is the overarching immediate threat. Once again it must become the most important issue.
I worked in the Silicon Valley in the 80s and 90s and things moved. Very. Fast. At lightening speed. Change happened. We were smart, efficient and competent. It could happen again here in California with regards to the Climate Crisis. And why not all over the world? There is a small window of opportunity at this moment. We must jump on it and address the Climate Crisis. Just doing it California will make a huge difference. It must happen everywhere now.
What will happen with the never ending wars, the pandemic, the economy, unemployment, and for all intents and purposes, with 25 million unemployed, the current depression?
No idea, but I don't have a good feeling about it.
Richard Wolff on Biden’s economic team and with Noam Chomsky
Given that there is little I can do about any of this I am going to do what I can and what I know. I have no idea what it will be, but I see a tiny opening to address our existential crisis.
Change is happening. Where will we land? I want a future for my grandson - for his generation. And not a dystopian one.

Planted Some Milkweed
on my balcony, about 4 moderately sized plants. Looking to see if I get any Monarch visitors. If I do, will perhaps plant more this spring.
They say the plants
Are better in spring summer and early fall. Some here say not to have them in the winter bc the eggs will not mature. It is too cold for them. I only get cats in the summer. And a few in the early fall. They have a hard time surviving that late. Some butterflies over winter here. Many have the parasite and are weak. Some say that is why they stay put instead of migrating. These only migrate to the San Jose area over the hill - about 30 miles. But they come here from a long distance. They cull the cats w the parasite at the monarch center. They check them with microscope by gently scraping a bit from their belly. I live next to the other monarch preserve but no one knows it is one but we who live around here and a few others plus the butterfly counters in the early fall. 30 years ago there were many hundreds in this grove of eucs. Now one to five over winter and no more than fifty in the summer.

Good morning...
We all must do what we can as life moves forward. As to the Bye-done presidency, we have a local saying, "It's better than it was when it was so bad."
Sadly I heard the future SoS say to Rubio, "The only thing wrong with the current approach to Venezuela is the dictator Maduro hasn't been overthrown." Some improvement huh?
We keep on keeping on, planting trees, got flats of early veg going, pruning existing fruit crops, and so on. We teach best by example...not what I say , but what I do.

As to the climate and environmental disaster, all we can do is what we can do. As you suggest the tipping point has (probably) passed. From my view we need to help young folks prepare for the future by recommending safer (non-coastal) locations, self sufficient skills, building communities of like minded folks, and so on. I always feel encouraged after talking with the younger generation. I don't think they understand the true risks for the most part, but I don't want to kill their optimism and hope for a productive future.
All the best to all of you. Thanks for the OT, MA.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Appears to be plenty of game playing on
multiple fronts by groups with varying agendas. Bystanders and enthusiastic, naive idealists have the potential to become collateral damage. During our lifetimes media coverage of USA foreign encounters have made many of us desensitized to the destruction military, intelligence agencies and collaborators have on individual lives and communities.
Epoch Times has a very anti-China biased reporting and not a source I would normally offer. The original video and analysis in this segment is interesting. (mins 1.42-6.42)

This article by Matt Blumenthal for the Grayzone profiling John Sullivan demonstrates how varying narratives of BLM/Antifa and Trump Supporters could be used to assign responsibility for events.
Still yourself, deep water can absorb many disturbances with minimal reaction.

Wow that is something
It’s beyond mind boggling.
I suspect Antifa of being infiltrated, but they
obviously had nothing to do with the Capitol riot.
Why do people always assume it's someone with the same amount of power as they have, or less, that is to blame? Why does nobody ever look up?
Isn't anybody concerned that our multi-billion-dollar security state just got caught with its pants down by a bunch of amateurs many of whom, quite frankly, were behaving like doofuses? Shall we ask the questions those facts suggest, or shall we just skip to the part where we call the people who ask those questions "Truthers" and dismiss them from polite society?
EDIT: Obviously, people *here* are concerned, as are some of the people studentofearth cited. It just seems like those people are very much in the minority in our society's discussion of these matters.

Well, that should take care of
any lurking impulse to dissent among the elected officials.
Madeleine L'Engle had it right, I think.
“Now see this,” he said. He raised his hand and suddenly they could see through one of the walls into a small room. In the room a little boy was bouncing a ball. He was bouncing it in rhythm, and the walls of his little cell seemed to pulse with the rhythm of the ball. And each time the ball bounced he screamed as though he were in pain.
“That’s the little boy we saw this afternoon,” Calvin said sharply, “the little boy who wasn’t bouncing the ball like the others.”
Charles Wallace giggled again. “Yes. Every once in a while there’s a little trouble with cooperation, but it’s easily taken care of. After today he’ll never desire to deviate again.

They're having a rough time which means we will have a rough time. Which is exactly to your point. Even the smallest thing we do towards towards healing, could possibly help. So it only makes sense to take those steps. Every native flower, shrub, or tree we plant can help. Cumulatively, if we all do this, while avoiding the use of pesticides, we might avert population crashes of these tiny all-important critters.

Well, I got one moment of amusement.
That the picture of Bernie, just sitting there in the cold with his mittens, seemed to eclipse everything else from yesterday's show, at least in my little social media circle. While I do follow a lot of meme makers and shitposters, I saw a lot fewer posts fawning over the new administration than I expected. Somehow I doubt that was the viral moment the Dems were hoping for.

Almost every seed Co. offers milkweed seeds now.
Once you plant them, you have milkweed forever. They are an interesting looking plant.
Something some might try to do is get a pesticide ban for your own town or neighborhood. I have had success politely asking my neighbors to not spray cides into my yard--not don't use them, but please not on my side the fence.
It is also possible to petition public works depts. to plant more flowers for pollinators. Some towns are doing that.

It is generally best to try to find local plant providers who
are willing to provide assurances that they are providing milkweed that is native to the local area. There are a great number of cultivars of milkweed and the pollinators native to or normally migratory through one's area greatly prefer the local natives. There was also some flap withing the last few years about "tropical milkweed", a commonly sold version, harboring a Monarch parasite, but that simply requires that one be aware of the problem and severely prune said milkweed at specific times/intervals.

Yep in ameriKKKa we can't have blacks uniting with each other
Fredrick Allen Hampton (August 30, 1948 – December 4, 1969) was an American activist and revolutionary socialist.[4] He came to prominence in Chicago as chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party (BPP), and deputy chairman of the national BPP. In this capacity, he founded the Rainbow Coalition, a prominent multicultural political organization that initially included the Black Panthers, Young Patriots, and the Young Lords, and an alliance among major Chicago street gangs to help them end infighting and work for social change.
In 1967, Hampton was identified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a radical threat. The FBI tried to subvert his activities in Chicago, sowing disinformation among black progressive groups and placing a counterintelligence operative in the local Panthers. In December 1969, Hampton was shot and killed in his bed during a predawn raid at his Chicago apartment by a tactical unit of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office in conjunction with the Chicago Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation; during the raid, Panther Mark Clark was also killed and several others were seriously wounded. In January 1970, a coroner's jury held an inquest and ruled the deaths of Hampton and Clark to be justifiable homicide.[5][6][7][8]
A civil lawsuit was later filed on behalf of the survivors and the relatives of Hampton and Clark. It was resolved in 1982 by a settlement of $1.85 million; the City of Chicago, Cook County, and the federal government each paid one-third to a group of nine plaintiffs. Given revelations about the illegal COINTELPRO program and documents associated with the killings, many scholars now consider Hampton's death an assassination under the FBI's initiative.[1][2][3]

Thank you both. I am still learning how much I have to learn.
We do feel really fortunate moving to France. It has not been a picnic mostly because of bad interior environments in our selected home and the apartment we rented while we renovated. We call it homesteading in France: the reverse pioneering. Both of us have ancestors from 1850s Alsace who immigrated to the US when the Germans took over that part of France (again).
Some interesting cultural random tid bits: France had abolition before Britain or the US. When we see and hear black and brown people walking around Paris or other cities, the first thing is the flawless use of French. Hijabs and other garments are not an indication of cultural integration. Many black musicians made their way to France in the mid 19s for a reason. If you spoke French or had/have residency, you are French. There is no census that asks ethnic questions.
The Muslim population is a problem: there is definitely otherism in France and I hear it. On the other hand, the Muslim population of the more conservative groups prefer to keep to themselves and not adapt to or adopt the French secular culture.
I have heard second generation Sicilian French make disparaging remarks about Black people. I have to tell them of my Sicilian father (100% of his grand parents came from one town, Orthodox Albanian, in Sicily) was in both Colorado and Oregon, a nxxxxr. They need to be careful and increase their understanding of other cultures.
All that being said, we feel we breathe better here. And with our French neighbors and acquaintances have very reasonable discussions about many things in daily life and politics. Everyone is respectful, and waits for the other person to present their information or ideas. It's cultural.
The French as a political nation have unfortunately followed the US in so many ways: into wars with their own planes, ships and personnel; following the US big guns in the Medical/Pharma industries; heads of state delighted with multinational corporations and their CEOs and so much more. They clearly have very intelligent scientists and engineers, designers and cultural leaders who are at the forefront of achievement. They need to put more trust in their own and other Europeans than the members of the "shining city on the hill".
However, the French have made strong resistance to Monsanto/Bayer especially with anything that hurts our pollinators. The EU tried to make a deal with Monsanto/Bayer since they don't want to deal with each EU nation individually, but the French refused to take the EU mandate to heart.
We don't know how we would be able to talk with our family and friends, as we have to stick to everyday subjects when we phone. In person it would be so much more difficult. Good Democrats all with a few exceptions.
So yes we are glad we fetched up here. We are hoping to leave the house to our daughter and her husband as a bolt hole if they ever need it.

Great to see you. I wonder how their fusion system works. Maybe someone here with more physics background can dig into this. It's fusion. It's hot. Really hot. Fascinating. No idea how they have done this. As to the weather, that I would think would require creating a temperature variation over a big area where the rain would fall. How they do this? They say they are using reflectors sprinkled over a large area to cool or to warm a large area. That's all the information they give. I wonder how that will affect the jet stream and how the reflectors would work in high wind. Maybe they are in the lower stratosphere. That would make some sense. Pretty amazing what can be done if our taxes are not spent on the MIC.

Can't we invent, build and deploy scrubbers
to remove at least some of the methane and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, so that we can at least, if we run hard, manage to stay in the same place? Then we could buy enough time to make changes.
My political outlook would change completely were that the case.
But it seems that the elites want a climate-driven collapse and the subsequent ending of human civilization and several billion human lives (plus countless non-human lives of course, but who thinks about them?)
