Happy New Year
.
Blog Marrion piece.jpg
.

Here’s my conundrum. We have a new more virulent form of the coronavirus. Just how does that work? It seems to me that everything stems from viral load. So does it need less load, less distance, what? Once again we are at a point where things are undefined.

Here in California there are few ”beds”. And nurses! Our governor has increased the case load for nurses from four to six making it untenable for them to do their jobs safely. Some are striking now.

My friend’s daughter works in the Covid ward in Watsonville. For each patient she has to suit up. She then goes in and does her tasks as quickly as possible, leaves and unsuits.

As it is, she hardly has time to eat or take bathroom breaks. They are striking there in their cars; they are driving their cars in circles around the hospital.

What happened here? We were doing so well.

Excellent. Posted it back to the local climate group. Michael Dowd says religion is one of the ways we got here. yep

Very heavy stuff. Here are some links to help with coping from the Deep Adaption group.

Dear Professions' Network member,

What a year! Perhaps 2020 will be remembered by millions as the end of ‘normal’?

If you are struggling with the new normal to the point where you need help, guidance or support then there are Deep Adaptation Guides who might be able to help.

One of the qualities of collapse is that it proceeds unevenly, and so appears quite differently, to different people in different places, with different stresses, challenges and priorities, which invite different responses.

The Deep Adaptation Guidance site seeks to bring together guides and support wherever you are and whatever stresses and strains are arising for you. If you are struggling in some way to find or express a loving response, our guides are here to meet you wherever you are and whatever you are going through.

Maybe it is about how to talk to loved ones or colleagues about the gap between what you and they are seeing and feeling?
Maybe it’s about anxiety, hopelessness or regulating grief and managing uncertainty?
Maybe it’s about how to make better sense of what is happening, or how to cultivate resilience and community or to move into action?
Or maybe you’re looking for self-guided methods for supporting your internal adaptation?

We have a growing community of guides adapting their processes and practices to offer very different kinds of help and support, to meet the very different kinds of need that arise. Many of the offers are free, low cost, or discounted from their usual rates. For those that can afford to pay, you are enabling collapse aware guides to step-up and develop the capacity and skills to innovate and serve the growing need.

If you are struggling with collapse or your adaptation, or know someone who might be, check out the Deep Adaptation Guidance site to see what is on offer - and let us know what you need if you can’t find help there.

fucking-around part already.

Now we get to do the finding-out part.

For our parts, we're hunkering down more than ever, and keeping up with the vitamins and personal hygiene regimen- to the point that we both have to use Bag Balm on our hands, since there's no humidity here.

Our friend who was a vocalist is back in the hospital with complications of Covid, after narrowly recovering from her May case. She's been on supplemental O2 since, but has started having more breathing issues and had to be readmitted. We haven't heard yet if she's positive again or not. Our other buddy who successfully weaned himself off the supplemental O2 just went diving again for the first time since contracting the virus in June, going shallow on Nitrox 50. He may finally be able to get back to work, assuming that things eventually reopen (he's a diving instructor).

I'm also happy that the British have approved the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine. We're trying to figure out a good way to travel somewhere in the old Empire to get it. It won't be approved here in the US for months yet (if ever), since it was intended from the start as a not-for-profit effort. When it comes time in a year or so to get vaccinated, I'm much more interested in that one than in anything that has been blessed by the US government. Mostly, we're watching for reliable reports on side effects of any of the mRNA vaccines, but there is a great deal of noise out there and very little signal.

I mourn the state of what used to be called journalism. We'll see a lot of newly-homeless people get very ill in the coming snowy months, but we'll never hear about them in the Carefully Curated And Approved News That Fits.

Got that. Hunkering down more than ever. So there will be another surge two weeks after xmas and another 2 weeks after New Years. That puts us to mid January. So best case we might see the numbers go down somewhere around the beginning of February. Maybe.

There are many people who are having long term complications from covid. Here is a recent article from the nyt (yes, nyt). I have seen a number of other similar articles.

He Was Hospitalized for Covid-19. Then Hospitalized Again. And Again.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/30/health/covid-hospital-readmissions.html

Data on rehospitalizations of coronavirus patients are incomplete, but early studies suggest that in the United States alone, tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands could ultimately return to the hospital.

A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of 106,543 coronavirus patients initially hospitalized between March and July found that one in 11 was readmitted within two months of being discharged, with 1.6 percent of patients readmitted more than once.

In another study of 1,775 coronavirus patients discharged from 132 V.A. hospitals in the pandemic’s early months, nearly a fifth were rehospitalized within 60 days. More than 22 percent of them needed intensive care, and 7 percent required ventilators.

And in a report on 1,250 patients discharged from 38 Michigan hospitals from mid-March to July, 15 percent were rehospitalized within 60 days.

What I do know is that there is a need to obscure our slow collapse with up-dates and new areas of focus. Keep us all tuning in.

For one thing, Operation Warp Speed has devolved into Operation Turtle Crawl. Vaccines are going bad after they arrive at distribution points that are somehow unable to deliver the vaccines into arms before they deteriorate. Our present government is failing at getting the vaccines out.

All they seem able to do is talk. Brag.

It's Trump's country now. Be on TV. Talk too much. Promise and lie . Then fail.

As of a few weeks ago, China had committed to manufacturing 600 million doses of their fridge-temperature 2-shot vaccine by the end of the year. I haven't looked for an update since. For some reason, they are not releasing clinical trial data yet. They have had to test the vaccine in other countries like the UAE because China has too few cases for mass trials (!). I've seen efficacy percentage results ranging from the 50s to the 80s.

This is a very promising approach. The Chinese vax is way cheaper and more easily transported and stored than the Pfizer and Moderna vax. It could be THE lifesaver in the Global South. I really want to see their data released, though, and peer-reviewed (or at least pre-print) papers when possible.

From NYT:
"The authorities have already moved ahead with plans to vaccinate 50 million people in China by mid-February"
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/29/world/a-chinese-coronavirus-vaccine-h...
from a quickie search
Judging by the fact that China succeeded in building a covid hospital in under two weeks, I tend to believe their delivery estimates.

Astrovax looks promising for the US, especially poorer and rural areas.

I really hope we don't see mutation beyond vax efficacy before we get a chance to beat this shit down.

we dropped the pretense and called this new so-called variant of Corona Virus SARS-2 (Covid-19) The England Virus? After all, that's where it was discovered. Besides, it probably escaped from their bioweapons facility at Porton Down. You know, where they allegedly merely verified that Novichok was used on the Skripals, some new-fangled less lethal Novichok that nobody had heard of before they, ahem, discovered that it had been used right in their back yard? What else, I wonder, are they working on?

Not that I will let chronological absolutism interfere with this opportunity to celebrate, but, don't we all need innumerable opportunities to celebrate. After all, the ship is sinking. ...the County’s Health Services director, stated the aging infrastructure that pumps oxygen to patient rooms is unable to handle the flow, resulting in hospitals turning away patients. “Because of that high flow through the pipes, sometimes it’s freezing in the pipes, and obviously if it freezes, then you can’t have good flow of oxygen,”.

more from wsws

According to Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly, the state’s hospitals have begun diverting ambulances and making decisions about rationing care. On Tuesday, he reported that more than 95% of Los Angeles hospitals have diverted ambulances in the last 24 hours. Throughout the regions of Southern California and the agricultural San Joaquin Valley, ICU capacity remains at zero percent.

Meanwhile healthcare staff are pleading for help. A video by Gayana Chuklansev, an intensive care nurse in Los Angeles, went viral on Tiktok and has been viewed 1.5 million times as of Wednesday. Chuklansev explains through tears, “We have no ventilators for patients. We have no sedating medications. Patients are dying like flies... We’re full. We’re at max capacity. We have no resources. We have no staff. Our doctors can’t even intubate because they have like 40 patients each.”

Newsom really hit the ground running in the beginning and then the push back began. We sheltered in place and our numbers were down. And he buckled. Because we have to save the lives of businesses too. Right? Just another snake in the grass.

Your are so right.

Why care about food webs? Well, these complex, highly interconnected systems of feeding relationships are essential for our planet's health. The Earth and its many species depend on them, including humans.

To get the feast started, who has the first seat at the dining room table? The system all starts with plants, which get great publicity for their ability to convert carbon dioxide and into breathable air. But plants also have another, lesser known talent; they capture energy from the sun and turn it into food. Animals eat plants. Some eat plants directly; others obtain this energy by eating an animal who eats plants. And what animals are the best at converting this energy? Think small.

Punching way above their weight class, insects are the best creatures on Earth at this energy transfer. And the world champions are caterpillars of the Lepidoptera species, the lifeblood of the food web whose protein-rich bodies are ideal for hungry birds.

But caterpillars and other insects can't simply thrive among any plants; they must be surrounded by native plants, meaning those that have evolved alongside insects over millions of years. For example, caterpillars in Delaware like the promethea silkmoth don't jive with popular exotic trees like crepe myrtle, a popular choice by homeowners.

Edit to add- Happy New Year to you too.

There is a mutation in a specific spike protein that makes it easier for the virus to attach to our ACE2 receptors.
Now they are finding that the viral load of Covid in nasal passages of patients is 10-100 times higher than with regular Covid. This last comes from a virology doctor professor. He said he would like to see more studies confirming this, but he is convinced.

From the thread discussion of other doctors after his initial tweet: higher viral load means more serious illness. The doctors are virtually screaming vaccinate, vaccinate, vaccinate, as many as possible, as fast as possible, "24/7" they say, as soon as vaccines available.

I don't know how to make the relevant tweets show up here. And with this crowd of skeptics, I would probably need to research and post all the credentials of the Dr.(s).

Totally above my pay grade, but the little I could follow was somewhat reassuring that the vaccines now being administered are likely to offer similar protection from the new variant. Transmissibility, because of an apparent much higher nasal viral load, is looking like more infective potential. A mixed bag, but not a disaster.

But that lasted only for about a week.

Then, he took it back and never mentioned supplements again. I figure the FDA had a psychotic episode over it. They dream of making possession of supplements illegal without a prescription

I think he told people who asked that they should consult with their personal physicians before taking any supplements. This is not a terrible idea, but in doing so, he put the lives of people who trust him at all, at risk.

The world is watching as the US of A deliberately kills some of the most vulnerable among us, but for gawd's sake won't they think of the children? It is immoral and every other word that fits here. Children are to be protected at all costs. This is going to put lots of moms and dads in positions where they might make really bad choices. But what is their other option?

Thanks for all the news. It is just kabuki as you say. Theater to put on a good face but nothing, absolutely nothing ever happens. Or if it does it is not in the interest of the 99%.

Thanks for keeping on and keeping us informed. Stay safe and take good care.

He is going after Mitch for not allowing a vote and talking about all the people who will have their utilities cut off.......lots of doom and gloom........but somehow he forgot that he HAD the chance to force the vote. He and 40 other demlicans voted against Bernie's thing.

It is such effing kabuki I can't understand how people cannot see through it. Mitch your bad. I know. What you going to do about it? Games while people die. I bet all of them have plans to party tonight in DC and this holding congress is just for show.

Chuck is still yapping and he's talking like he is reading a fairy tale to children. Yapping....just give a vote on the bill and then we will go pick up Eyor, Poo and Winnie and go live happily ever after. Good grief.

This seems to be a big deal that cut the US out. China did another deal with lots of members that Obama wanted for the TPP. This should be interesting to see how Biden handles it.

https://www.rt.com/op-ed/511221-us-fury-china-eu-deal/

Suddenly, within hours of this deal having been agreed, the Trump administration slapped new tariffs specifically targeting goods from France and Germany. Although these measures are stated to be part of the longstanding dispute between Boeing and Airbus, the timing is no coincidence, and it seems apparent that they are a targeted retaliation against the EU’s deal with China. One that undercuts the US position and rubbishes talk of a “transatlantic alliance” against Beijing, with Commission President von der Leyen stating: “Tomorrow’s post-COVID world needs a strong EU-China relationship, to build forward better.” (Instead of build back better.)

The situation represents a cold reality check for the US, and in turn an act of desperation by a losing side which will only serve to deepen the rift between America and Europe that Trump has created. Ultimately, Mike Pompeo’s talk of a “transatlantic awakening” has been exposed as utter drivel and rehashed Cold War nostalgia which has been deeply out of touch with not only the realities of contemporary Europe and the global economy, but how the administration itself has approached these issues. Thus, as 2020 comes to an end, a year where the US has sought to vilify and isolate Beijing but yielded little fruit, the Biden administration now arguably faces an enormous uphill battle if he seeks to fix this “sledgehammer” effort.

he White House has been contentious towards the EU, while simultaneously attempting to arm-twist it into compliance in its neo-Cold War against China, with Pompeo arguing that they have an obligation to do so as “free nations.”

he result is that the American position, despite all the fiery rhetoric, is increasingly isolated when it comes to China. It’s demanded other countries decouple and cut ties with Beijing in the same way it is doing, but the opposite is happening, because it’s really about US interests first above everyone else, rather than ideological solidarity. The fact that they have responded to the EU by slapping on tariffs shows their deep frustration over the fact their China vision is failing to materialize, with their leverage on Beijing having just been sharply reduced.

Lots of people are stirring up sh*t all over the globe. NATO has been flying next to Russia’s borders. Israel drives its submarine into where it threatens Iran. Boats in the China seas are still playing blind mans bluff and who knows exactly what the cia death squads are doing in Afghanistan. 1 more day.

Thanks. It’s for my friend and ex co-convenor Marion. We met in 2016 and fought in the front lines together for years. How lucky I am to have met all these wonderful people who all came together for the, as I see it now, ‘war’ for a better world. Hoping your beach-side perch is bringing you joy. Be safe. Be well. Take good care. And Happy New Year to you.

This evening we received word from our oldest daughter that her husband's mother has been in a Georgia hospital for nearly a week with Covid. (Our daughter and family are here in Houston.) They weren't notified until today. About all we know is that she's on oxygen. Not a good situation as she is quite asthmatic. She also has no money ...probably less than no money.

Hoping that she's made 65 and is on Medicare now, but we're not positive. Calls for info aren't getting answered.

Not a good start to a new year. Hope everyone else's is much better.

I think it's eating at us that all of us here in Texas are too far away to help. That and wondering why it took so long for the info to get to us. Lots we don't know.

@travelerxxx , being too far away to help. I've read that communication between the hospital staff and the family can be difficult for a variety of reasons. I hope you are able to have open channels of communication so that at least you can know what is going on.
