Neologism of the week: naforésomáskaphobia

Noun: The irrational fear of wearing a face mask. This is especially prevalent among US males, many of whom express a concern that doing so will harm or even destroy their masculinity. This is particularly concerning as to the boomer population, wherein a great number of the males, in childhood, greatly enjoyed wearing masks, especially the quasi-domino style favored by the Lone Ranger.

people of my type: American, more specifically (and therefore more likely) older, working class, male, have been systematically lied to about essentially everything. Truth, when it can be somehow pulled out of the morass of deceptions, is only partial and therefore easily (and immediately) denounced as "conspiracy theory". Surprise! I don't trust anything someone claiming authority tells me.

tells me, but, should I consider the matter to be of import, try to figure out what is likely. Just as we have a lot of evidence for the earth being round, we have a lot of evidence for the "germ theory" of many diseases and a lot of related stuff. When an authority says don't wear a mask, it won't help, but somebody else clarifies that they are needed for doctors and such, my next question is, if they don't help, why do doctors wear them? Why do we cover our moutns and noses when we cough and sneeze? etc. And, finally I fall back on 1) the precautionary principle (it don't hurt to wear one and it might keep me from getting sick and 2) indirect evidence, as in correlations, as best as one can tell, between who gets sick and who doesn't. I definitely don't take into account the thinking of the guy who said he doesn't wear one because he isn't a "coward." I felt like asking, that beingthe case, why he wasn't darting in and out of traffic.

from their diseases (I had a friend who died because Kaiser tried to save $2 on Lysol in their operating rooms) But that required me to care about someone else - not Kaiser or Billy Roy or Senator Libhater. Independent thought is hard; it's so much easier to simply disregard every source. You'll feel superior too.

So I'm just glad it's a mask reference with regard to the inane and possibly insane.

I haven't been to a Greek restaurant since Easter 2019. Lamb, loukaniko, dolmades, gyros. Oh! Oh! Washed down with good Mavrodapne or Peloponnese red! Fighting my hunger pangs!
A snifter of Metaxa and that excellent Greek salad first. Maybe with a bit of octopus.

So sick of subway steak & cheese, Panera Bacon Turkey Bravo. Frozen dreck from the microwave. Even tired of Culver's Butter burgers (but not the concrete mixers).

To eat Greek food and sip Greek wine is to savor the first true civilization.

Edit: Helter skelter I came back to the top from the bottom of this long post I needed to get off my broken chest. Gavin Newsom makes me sick, same as it ever was. uniparty seizure

Hi! Did you see Newsom's French Laundry apology on the TV machine? Some tube channel in my bookmarks had a link to the video of Him apologizing about attending a big fancy dinner, I think it was the Hill. I downloaded to watch Governor Newsom's latest pandemic statement because California is in the shit again. Code Purple or some such nonsense. Sonoma County never got out of the shit, so not much has changed for me in that department. Anyway, whatever Newsom said I couldn't finish it after he coughed mask-free in to his own fine bare hand near the beginning. Nothing says Dear Leadership like a big ugly "DO AS I SAY" at the same moment the human hair gel container spewing it is NOT doing as they say. Hi Ho Hypocromask! Away! giddyup

Around here machismo is a cultural value, now elevated to "essential" by the plutocracy. Local rag newspapers put worshiping articles about immigrants "coming to work the same day they had their wisdom teeth pulled. Never missed one day in twenty years", etc.. As if that is something to value now during a pandemic, I think not. Today's exploited low wage immigrant can support a family and build a house back home for their own fine retirement years, what's not to love. Uniparty still producing the giant sucking sound, 2020 biggest year in history for remittances to Mexico. Free movement of capital improvement.

I already experienced some funky lung bug, for three days felt like a cold with a broken rib or collapsed lung and now it is better. shrug I also resolved another tooth infection pretty quick, but the cold virus I think I picked up the day I overcame my laundromat phobia to drag sheets blankets and sleeping bag down there for washing.

My luck I picked the same day there was "Free popup COVID-19 testing", but no free popup Vitamin D bottles, and no free popup face masks, and no free popup hand washing staions, or even free popup bottles of hand sanitizer. Just the "free" test in the Plaza with lots of foot traffic. Mrs. NoPants was running around mask free between the Plaza and the laundromat, where she was keeping her food box. She is a schizophrenic homeless woman, I have spoken to her a couple of times but not lately. Sonoma County voters passed another useless crony program tax that never seems to trickle down upon her life. Oh well. I can't tell her to put on a mask when she is not even wearing pants, c'mon man! "This is America." --Joe Biden

One potential complicating factor is Newsom’s ex-wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle, a Fox News pundit who many expect will become Donald Trump’s new White House press secretary.

WTF?! I was trying to find Newsom's quote about California being the future when that old gaurdian article popped up. Family. No mask is going to fix this broken down system of crony capitalism, though it may help voters feel like they have some control over their tiny little lives. Ha ha! Not me.

Newsome is a classic. Power, like wealth, trickles up, misery is all that trickles ever downwards. Raining in the East Bay, fwiw, yestidday afternoon through now. Something else we cannot control.

@Azazello heh! Your link is from August here we are in November already. tempus fugit: (VIDEO) Eureka Police Remove Anti-Masker From Costco By Force, Say Case Will be Forwarded to DA for Charging Decision

“The masks don’t work!” the maskless woman is heard to say to another customer. “This has going been on for almost a year now! If they work so well, why are people still getting sick?”

“I wonder, stupid!” was the answer.

Eureka Police Department spokesperson Brittany Powell tells the Outpost that the woman was not arrested, but temporarily detained on suspicion of robbery. Officers were told that the woman had snatched the phone from a Costco employee’s hands and returned it only when she was informed that police were at the scene.

I think I heard her say she was disabled at the beginning, but not sure. At least she was wearing pants, right on.

@enhydra lutris therefore, a duck weighs the same as a witch? So burn her!

I am enjoying visions of Cosco roaming giraffes at the moment, their Lone Ranger masks do look quite fashionable inside my head, and a pie-hole mask would definitely spoil the image.

I dipped my toe into the anti-mask world for about five minutes today, listened to some expert virologists in Manitoba Canada saying how totally absurd the mask wearing and work stoppages around COVID-19 were. "It's just a bad flu", etc.. He sounded really convincing to a dumb cluck like me, how would I know who to believe? Which expert? Right now I just check and comply with Sonoma County and go with the flow. Imagine those people yelling about shelter for homeless or fair wages or something more tangible than "freedom to spread a bad flu sickness". battle weary

Yeah, this video seems to be running around at all the right-wing nutcase sites. My wife brought it to my attention as it was posted on various Facebook friend's pages. I did some checking and found that the main dude, some Dr. Hodkinson, is the "doctor" pushing this. I had a little bit of time this morning and checked a bit on this Hodkinson. Turns out, he is a "professional witness," hired by attorneys in lawsuits, etc. So, my assumption is that he was paid to spout his foolishness. Probably a great PR move, too.

I believe he is also behind a "medical lab" of some sort, which is touting a COVID test. Evidently, some government has given them millions of dollars to work on it. Of course, the lab says something quite different than what the doctor spouted on the video.

I'm sure there is much more out there on this guy, but I've got chores to do and no more time to check. Maybe more later.

@travelerxxx yes thanks you heard the same. I saw it on zerohedge which is why I didn't link or say too much more about it. I always wait to see if a "real" news outlet picks it up before linking. Ha ha ha! Anyway here he is over there, the article is pretty much a transcript of the embedded video with commentary:
Top Pathologist Claims COVID-19 Is "The Greatest Hoax Ever Perpetrated On An Unsuspecting Public"

Experts agree, everything is fine

“Masks are utterly useless. There is no evidence base for their effectiveness whatsoever,” he said.
“Paper masks and fabric masks are simply virtue signalling. They’re not even worn effectively most of the time. It’s utterly ridiculous. Seeing these unfortunate, uneducated people – I’m not saying that in a pejorative sense – seeing these people walking around like lemmings obeying without any knowledge base to put the mask on their face.”

Well see, I thought he was talking to me because I am unfortunate, uneducated people. Not Cambridge material. LOL
