Isn't this great?

OK. Now take a couple of deep breaths. Better? Good.

I'm not a philosophical thinker or a polisher of abstract concepts. Having spent all my life in the 3-D world building things, my first thoughts, after reading, and reading, and reading, were on the mechanics of the site. And having grown up poor, no, not poor, broke, (poor is a state of mind; broke* is a financial condition), I immediately saw the challenge Johnny set for himself, and all the rest of us.

*Broke is your mom working three jobs. Broke is eating stuff that's been in the freezer for two years and not even your mom having any idea what it was. Broke is getting long-johns for Christmas. Broke is helping mom stuff toilet paper in the cracks around the leaky windows in winter. Broke is not turning the heat on until November 15th. Broke is making Christmas trees with cardboard and tin foil. Broke is living on potatoes, cooked ten different ways and tea boiled five times before making a new pot... for weeks on end. (That last part was the result of hurtling unceremoniously into the job market at a precocious age.)

When I think of building things, there are actually four dimensions I have to take into account: length, width, height, and cost. The last dimension is often overlooked. When building things there are also three parameters to be considered--you can only have two--good, fast, or cheap. Pick any two. Believe me. This is an absolute.

The reason I bring all this up, as I've been doing in passing these last few weeks, is that what we have here is:

Good and Fast

So that leaves the one it ain't.

Now if you've read this far, I hope you're going to be part of the solution, and if you aren't, you can hold yourself personally responsible when you walk down the street and see Johnny standing on the corner with a banged-up tin cup begging for tips and recs. Look at the chart up there and do the math.

Obi Wan Canobi: "Use the Button, Luke."

Love,
AB

P.S. The kittens are getting kind of big, so I might have to make more than one piecrust if this plea doesn't loosen some pockets.

I gave immediately on joining. I will give more over time. I will continue to read essays and comments many times a day. I will write comments and essays in my areas of interest. For many of us who have experience in "the other place" this is a chance to make c99 a real participation community, and to participate in a groundswell of political change.

Congratulations to everyone on a month of truly spectacular growth!

Or at least tried to.

Born in '51. By the time I was two, I'd had it. Found a penny in the sofa. Left all my (their) clothes on the doorstep and, buck-naked, hightailed seven blocks to get some candy for the road, before I got recaptured by some black ladies who knew my mom. She didn't know she was supposed to be prejudiced. That was in Winston-Salem.

By the time I was four, in Baltimore, the backyard had chicken wire all around the sides... and over the top. AB was a superlative climber.

Afrikaner (African Dutchman) and an English mother. I was taught a bit of Dutch in my Afrikaans language classes; I can read it - with a bit of help, but my word, Dutch folks speak fast! Afrikaans is a simplified and Africanized version of Dutch, just like Quebec French is to the French of France. French visitors understand my poor French better than they do the Quebecoise, because the Dutch makes me sound like a Belgian, apparently :=) I visited Amsterdam at 18 for a few days in 1981 and had a riotous evening in the red light district :=) I heard somewhere it's all cleaned up now.

I married a Canadian girl: I showed her Africa, but she missed home and we have lived here permanently since 1993. My kids are Canucks and I'm very happy about that. I know what you mean about dirt. I live too much in my head, but I'm always so happy when I am working with dirt. Our kids are in their early 20s and we're looking forward to grandkids, although there's no rush!
