Tonight, NZ Will Celebrate the New Year to Come

And you lucky guys have a day longer to anticipate the wishes you wish for.

I was going to plant a swan plant this evening for the monarch butterflies, but thought to wait until tomorrow, because several years ago I heard a sentiment that expressed something that makes much sense to me, and I’m sure to you as well. It was something like, “on new years day do something purposeful to honour the new year, with the hope that it will have meaning in the future”.

I’d like to wish you all what magiamma wished me - May happiness shine on you and wonder unfold around you in the new year.

And for you mimi and lotlizard, ich wünsche euch einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr.

This is not a NY’s Eve fireworks celebration, but did take place in Auckland, and I liked the image.

You got me swishing into the new year ; ). Perfect music and lyrics ...

To the river wide and strong
It won't take long
We can all go together
If we just hold on
A new generation
And a brand new age
I wanna fall like rain
On burning pages

...

Hope
Hope, hey eh
I want my child to see the beauty of this place
To walk from the mountains, to the sea

There are even more great lyrics, like music gets me through ...

All the best to you Than

Yes, amazing ... especially since I thought Monarchs were only found in North America. Are they native? Do they migrate as they do (well, most of them) in the USA?

Adaptations to life in New Zealand

Monarchs in New Zealand do not follow the same migration pattern as their northern relatives. They have adapted their migration behaviour to suit local conditions. When the air temperature drops to 12.8°C, monarchs flock together in overwintering sites. These sites tend to be in milder coastal locations where the temperature remains at least 10°C. Overwintering monarchs prefer sites that are sheltered from the wind, have trees with a rough bark surface on which to cling and have a nearby source of nectar. The butterflies are mostly inactive, but on warm days, they fly, bask in the sunlight and feed. When the temperatures warm up, butterflies move inland to reproduce.

Butterflies can be blown across from Australia. Isn’t it amazing to think that butterflies can survive being blown across the Tasman and arrive here intact?

Entomologists now believe that New Zealand butterflies either blew across the Tasman Sea or came here via New Caledonia. It was once thought their origins were from Gondwana.

Monarchs were reliably documented here more than a 130 years ago.

transform from caterpillar to butterfly. I usually take them out for their first flight after they have dried their wings. Some of them do this little ritual before they fly... they look left and then right, shiver...and then take off. It stirs my heart!

to all the information you, and those like you, can provide about those who intend to hide in your marvelous country when the world ends. Inquiring minds and all.
Best of the new year to you and yours. And whatever you plant, make sure it's in a square hole.

@Pricknick

Why a square? Is it to include all four directions, NESW, or is something more mysterious?

there's literally tons of information about why to plant in a square hole.
Just type this in to your choice of search engine: "Why to plant in a square hole".
It's the little shit that escapes us, yet makes us more attune.
