OT ~ Welcome to Saturday!

The heart knows first.

Sit-a-while
on swinging porch
where tin-dippers and
sweet water
in cool touches
meet lips
from hand dug wells.

Place it,
make the space

of it. Yellow,
that was a time.

He saw the stain of love
was upon the world,

a selvage, a faint
after edge of color, fading

at the edge of the world,
the edge beyond that edge.

The story of a migrant spy: Secret spectacles

Standing room only when Dad passed away; kindest, best man around in heart and smiles, little man in size, a giant in giving. Thirty-two B17 missions over Germany: Flying Eagle, the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze stars, four Oak Leaf Clusters, a quiet hero destined to work himself to the bone. He loved race cars, big cars and people. An unassuming man, a friend to all and a wonderful comedian.

"Don't care how much a pair of shoes cost, son, I want to afford a pair."

"Don't go to Vietnam."
"We all lost a lover along the way."

all of you have no one has been waiting for: The acoustic mmmbop from THE basement sessions!

I have no idea why I feel compelled to post it today, but I do.

Hanson trivia: Drummer Zac was only six when the group began performing. Not quite Mozart, but still....

And who knew that "mmmbop" and other nonsense words were not the only lyrics? Not I! So, badu to you!

You have so many relationships in this life
Only one or two will last
You go through all the pain and strife
Then you turn your back and they're gone so fast
Oh yeah
And they're gone so fast, yeah
Oh, so hold on the ones who really care
In the end they'll be the only ones there
And when you get old and start losing your hair
Can you tell me who will still care?
Can you tell me who will still care?
Oh care

All to the east are still asleep, or taking their coffee with the times or some such disinformation source? Ah well. Yesterday foretold rain today, but today says not until tomorrow, even though it is bleak, grey and heavy clouded. Sitting thinking of what I can postpone today, so much having piled up while away, sitting atop my usual heap of still undone, heh. Thank you for your column, which I am still trying to digest. The story of the migrant spy is quite a read, thanks for posting it.

About the idea of being at the mercy of unscrupulous money whores in the desert who sell men's labor and women's bodies for cash. Troubling story. Visiting the ugly side of humanity usually is. The dark and the light. I find it helpful to remember that. For every story I hear of the darkness of the human heart, I whisper to myself, yes, but there is still the light.

Perhaps not on the caliber of the BBC, this websites gathers funny, sweet stories from real people, reminding us that everyday there are acts of random kindness happening all around the world every minute of the day. For reasons that are clear to anyone who knows me, this one made me smile: The Nightly Visitor

After visiting the deserts of Africa in your story, I let my cats out to sniff around the garden and enjoyed what is a beautifully cool crisp sunny day here in Southern California. I walked out into the garden in my pajamas to listen to the birds chirping, and to sit under the shade of the trees and enjoy those lovely long shadows they make this time of the morning. All that's missing is nice cup of coffee.

Thanks for hosting today's OT, Smiley. Glad Azeteng made it back home. Always enjoy the poems you select and the art you share with us. Much appreciated, my friend. Smile

me of the bungalow we had up the hill in Sherman Oaks; a small back yard with a large lemon tree, room for a table and chairs similar to yours.

Looking forward to the wine tasting and another memory of the Trader Joe's in Sherman Oaks, we filled the cart with $2 bottles of wine TJ had purchased in bulk from the wineries; good wine and fit our budget in the day.

Debated with myself about posting Spy Spectacles; not a usual kind of fair for me on Saturday's, but it encompasses so many of today's challenges: climate, war, migration and what in the world are we going to do about it and getting the news out as the young courageous man did deserves memorializing as much as anything this holiday.

Hope you've a gentle breeze flowing in those hills today; it's record breaking heat in the East. Have a splendid holiday.

Sherman Oaks. That brings back memories of my own. What we in West L.A referred to in my youth, as the "Valley". Ah, kids. What do they know. Lol.

Yeah, gardens are nice. A far cry from the fire escape I had in New York.

Stories are powerful aren't they? And as I said to SOE down thread, all art, brings the canvas of our lives into relief. So our reactions are just as revealing as the art is itself. Intellectually, I see everything both you and SOE see, along with bringing the conversation to light. Emotionally, what resonated for me was the reminder that there is so much human suffering in the world. When confronted with those feelings, I am often torn between the things I can do to help and the impotence I feel when I cannot. I imagine we all go through our own coping skills. We are people who care. Deeply. And feeling the weight of that is the consequence of our humanity. But so is laughter and kindness. Which is also here in abundance. Fair trade, if you ask me.

Thank you for your kind response. Stay cool, Smiley.

The spontaneous uprising of individuals who do the unexpected.

He wanted to fight against injustice, but he didn’t know how.

Each story is different throughout history sometimes they make a big difference, sometimes nothing and sometimes only a ripple. A ripple can travel a long ways and be joined by other energy sources to keep traveling and expanding.

Security states watch for the beginning of the ripple so they can stop it or prevent it from ever starting. The repressed are watching to figure out which one to give a helping hand and still survive. The those inbetween are trying to ride the crest and not feel any change in condition.

@studentofearth

I went to an art class where each of us painted a re-creation of Monet's Waterlillies. Once the paintings were completed, each of the twenty canvasses were different. Same painting but interpreted in a completely different way.

What imprinted in your mind as a hopeful story, had a different effect on mine. The first person narrative from someone who was just as vulnerable as any of those who were murdered, brought with it an intimately visceral look at the horrors of slave trade that was both shocking and violent. I am relieved young Azeteng made it back alive, but am also concerned that he must now find a way to live with the trauma of the experience.

A friend of mine specializes in treating trauma victims from other countries who were either held as slaves, or they escaped mass killings. She is an older women who has been doing this work for years and some of her stories are heartbreaking. I suppose on some level, this story made me think of the vast numbers of traumatized victims trying desperately to repair their lives. And they are the lucky ones.

In one sense, as in all art, stories bring the canvas of our own lives into relief. I'm glad of that because art is the truest expression of our humanity. I also envy you in the way your canvas was different than mine. Food for thought, I suppose. Forgive my stream of consciousness.

@Anja Geitz is what creates the rich tapestry of human experience. Sharing our different viewpoints increases the significance of the story and expands our own ability to traverse this world. The tragedies experienced by the migrants, individuals along the way who had to participate in the trade or risk their own lives, and the destruction of communities when they became a stop along a migrant route are all powerful stories.

Humans capacity for self created tragedies is immense. For myself it would be overwhelming keeping focus primarily to the tragedies encountered and those of friends and family. I would have no energy left to push back or worse case scenario descend into state numbness. I choose to look for paths or stepping stones to avoid or live through tragedies. Yes and at times knowingly reside in a safe bubble I created for me and those close to rebalance, heal and energize.

Your friend is doing hard work. Admire she has been able to continue for several years.

I read the comments before following links. So I didn't follow the link to the sad stories of slaves and death. Read about Audrey the cat who snuggles her human at night. Beautiful.

Sometimes I don't have it in me to read the sad stuff.

Here is a gardening pic inspired by Anja's OT last Tuesday.

Not the same as Anja's lovely salad, but totally delicious. I brought those beets and onions in from the garden. Took off the greens and chopped them up. Peeled and cut up the beets. Cut up the onions. Put the beets and the white onions in a glass dish. Added a bay leaf and covered with balsamic vinegarette dressing. Microwaved on high for five minutes, stirred and repeated until beets were soft enough. Added the beet greens, red onions, and more dressing. Microwaved for five more minutes. Sprinkled feta cheese on the top.

OMG. I kept telling my daughter, "I can't believe how good this is!" Followed a similar recipe from the Food Network website.

Happy holiday weekend everyone!

You made me smile when I read your description of how much you enjoyed your salad. I often do the same thing while I'm eating something very good. That is to say, I exclaim out loud to anyone in earshot just how good it is, regardless who made it. Which sounds fine when I'm praising other people's dishes. A bit more conspicuous when the dish I'm raving about is my own. Lol.

be doing a little bit better, if/when this heat waves passes.

(Again, don't mean to complain too much, considering the misery and destruction in some parts of the country, over the weekend. Wish the best for folks struggling with the aftermath of flooding/tornadoes, not to mention, the tragic loss of life.)

Should get word by sometime in June, if Mr M can be medically-released (aside from a 6-month follow-up exam)--which will allow us to make final retirement plans. Yea! Wink

Also, looks like Kaity (or, 'Bo,' as we've nicknamed her) might not have more than one serious congenital medical condition (which is a relief). When my cut finger heals a bit, I'll elaborate a little. It's still a challenge to type, especially, for someone whose typing skills are already going downhill.

BTW, 'Bo' is short for Rambo, not Bo Derek. Biggrin Mr M gave her that name because she is so, so powerful, or strong. (She's just pushing 7 months old.) Yikes! Seriously, we plan to get her some obedience instruction, soon. Had to be delayed while she was seeing various vets/being evaluated, and treated.

Hope you and yours have a wonderful rest of the holiday weekend! (Googled, and saw that you Guys celebrate your equivalent--Anzac Day--in April. Which is cool.)

Thank you for today's OT. I'm assuming that you're referencing your Dad--a very lovely remembrance, indeed. Judging from your temperament and personality, I'm sure that he was a very good and fine man. Give rose

Guess I'll also take this moment to honor my Father, who passed away on Memorial Day (May 28, 1979) - forty years ago.

In his case, he was a very sweet and gentle Giant (at 6 ft 7 in)--called 'Mr John,' by all. I was devastated, since I was only in my mid-twenties when he passed away. (He was well in his seventies at the time; of course, he was close to fifty, when I was born.) And, I totally adored him. "Still miss you every day, Daddy." Give rose

On the bright side, an ol' Corrente blogging buddy must have gotten her ban lifted. Hadn't logged into my Twitter account for a couple weeks, but, when I did last evening, discovered that her account has been restored. Yeah! She's a true radical. But, never hateful, disrespectful, or, in any way, toxic. She's followed by a lot of lefty publications. (Heck, she has almost 4600 followers. She must do something right.) Bottom line, maybe Twitter can be fair/reasonable, after all.

Hope you and yours have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend, Smiley. Thank you for being here, and for your uplifting Saturday essays!

European concert dates after slicing his finger while making a ham sandwich. "If I'd known, I would have had mac and cheese," he said.

BTW, this was a bit of a "tell". You may already know that Young was originally from Canada (If not, let me just say, "Neil Young? Did you know he's Canadian?") but did you know that Kraft macaroni and cheese -- branded "Kraft Dinner" -- is something of a phenomenon up there? Canadians consume about 1/4 of all the Kraft mac & cheese sold in the world. Nobody is entirely certain why.
