WE NEED TO FACE THE FACTS AND WORK TOGETHER

The more I know about Global Heating, the more I worry for the survival of the planet. It is beyond the pale not to acknowledge, let alone prepare for the inevitable climate chaos.

Increasingly, more and more people are understanding the truth of climate breakdown and more importantly the reality that it implies. Initially people are shocked, stunned, horrified, and simply too overwhelmed to do anything. They become frozen with fear. Even when impacted by fires and floods many do not make the connection.

We need to move past our fear and work together towards deep adaptation.

Deep adaptation means, at a minimum, ensuring an equitable supply of the basics including food, water, energy, payment systems, and health care. It means reconfiguring life for sea-level rise.

Net Zero by 2025 is also mandatory and should include all known mitigation approaches for carbon removal.

Without our planet, we have nothing. As climate emissaries, we must walk the walk and more importantly talk the talk.

Too many people think things are normal. They certainly have no real idea of what is to come. Without our planet, we have nothing.

Wake people up. CO2 has just been measured at 415 ppm. We need to turn on a dime at mach nine.

This article speaks to local efforts. We must also work at a national level to achieve sustainability as a civilization…

A road map to zero net emissions by 2025
University of the Sunshine Coast

At the Conference of the Parties, Paris, 2015 (COP21) nations committed to limit global temperature increases to no more than two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times, and urged greater efforts to limit the increase to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Some of the key initiatives include:

• Sustainable transport including a bike hub, fuel-efficient vehicles, purpose-built 100% solar-powered buggies, and a shuttle bus service to Gympie, Sippy Downs, North Lakes and Caboolture which helps avoid the use of personal transport reducing both emissions and road congestion.

• In 2013, USC adopted an innovative total waste streaming system that includes onsite processing of green/organic waste. Food scraps, compostable plates, cups and cutlery sold at campus food outlets, paper hand towels, and cardboard is converted into nutrient-rich compost for the campus gardens.

• USC was the first University in Queensland and the second in Australia to stop the sale of single-use plastic water bottles on campus and provide a variety of water refill options instead.

• Improving energy efficiency for heating, ventilation and air conditioning and phasing in the transition to LED lighting across the University have provided operational efficiencies to minimise energy use.

Counter-intuitive climate change solution
Science Daily 5-20-16

A seemingly counterintuitive approach -- converting one greenhouse gas into another -- holds promise for returning the atmosphere to pre-industrial concentrations of methane, a powerful driver of global warming. … The basic idea is that some sources of methane emissions -- from rice cultivation or cattle, for example -- may be very difficult or expensive to eliminate. "An alternative is to offset these emissions via methane removal, so there is no net effect on warming the atmosphere,"

Cloning Ancient Trees To Reforest The Planet
Global Truths 2-5-14

These ‘daughter’ trees will grow 10 feet per year, and when mature, will each contain 400 tons of carbon (Planting Event 2013), soaking up the large quantities of unwanted carbon in our atmosphere; showing not only potential for species continuation, but for tackling climate change in a sustainable way.

The Scale of the Problem
Jocobin 5-12-19

Transforming our economy away from fossil-fuel dependency and toward one powered by renewable energy sources is a seismic economic transformation, just as abolishing US slavery was in the nineteenth century. … Although abolition didn’t mark the end of capitalism, it was a massive expropriation of property — no wonder it couldn’t be done peacefully and by mere moral suasion. It took the violent deaths of more than six hundred thousand — 2 percent of the population — to end slavery.

Why the Guardian is changing the language it uses about the environment
The Guardian 5-17-19

From now, house style guide recommends terms such as ‘climate crisis’ and ‘global heating’. Instead of “climate change” the preferred terms are “climate emergency, crisis or breakdown” and “global heating” is favoured over “global warming”, although the original terms are not banned.

‘Extraordinary thinning’ of ice sheets revealed deep inside Antarctica
The Guardian 5-15-16

The warming of the Southern Ocean is resulting in glaciers sliding into the sea increasingly rapidly, with ice now being lost five times faster than in the 1990s. The West Antarctic ice sheet was stable in 1992 but up to a quarter of its expanse is now thinning. More than 100 metres of ice thickness has been lost in the worst-hit places.

Reuters 5-15-19

There is also growing potential for one type of disaster to produce or exacerbate another, as when heavy rains trigger mudslides after wildfires, warned the report launched at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva. … "If we continue living in this way, engaging with each other and the planet in the way we do, then our very survival is in doubt," said Mami Mizutori, special representative of the U.N. secretary-general for disaster risk reduction. … Extreme weather events have doubled over the last 20 years, causing economic losses that are making it "an uphill battle" to maintain development gains in low and middle-income countries, she added in a statement.

Dozens of cities across the world have declared a climate emergency. Now, students behind the school climate strikes are bringing the movement to Switzerland and Germany. … Swiss politician Aenas Wanner from the Green Liberal Party did just that — and managed to get a two-thirds majority in favor of Basel officially declaring a climate emergency, the first local government in the German-speaking world to do so. … The students' idea has inspired other Swiss cities, like Zurich, to follow Basel's lead. And it's even sweeping over the border to Germany, where students and citizens are starting to pressure their cities to do the same. [But] "Nothing is being done at a federal level. The German parliament hasn't understood how urgent this topic is,"

Louisiana Law Turning Pipeline Protests Into Felonies Violates Constitution, New Lawsuit Alleges
Desmog 5-22-19

A lawsuit filed today in federal court in Louisiana challenges the state’s “critical infrastructure” law, used to press felony charges against fossil fuel pipeline construction opponents, as unconstitutional. … Louisiana’s critical infrastructure law is unconstitutionally vague and broad, the suit alleges, because it lets “any authorized person” exclude people from public places like sidewalks and roads if the state’s 125,000 miles of mostly unmarked pipelines cross there. The law could even be used to bring felony charges against a landowner for being on their own land, the lawsuit alleges.

a few of us are working on rewriting our city council goals and transportation is a bigy or is that bigly. ha. Our population is about 100K. The transportation group has been involved in this battle, yes battle, for a long time but there are more progressives on the council now.

The point is that every city should look at their budget and goals and regroup them through the lens of climate change.

here's the list
Our request is:

delete the new Hwy 1 bridge over the San Lorenzo
delete the Hwy 1 & Hwy 9 intersection widening
delete the garage (aka mixed use structure)
acquire electric passenger vehicles & light trucks rather than internal combustion vehicles
require Commission approval of transportation projects (so they get public input to make them better)

There are numerous bicycle and pedestrian projects in the Active Transportation Plan (ATP) that could use the funding saved from deleting the auto projects. The Transportation and Public Works Commission is setting up a subcommittee to prioritize the ATP projects.

the streets of major cities are flooded with bikes, mostly bright red ones. They are attached to special racks all over town and are seen in use by riders wherever you look. Users pay a small monthly fee for access. They are then enabled through some tech to unlock and remove any such bike from any such rack. If they return it to another rack in under half of an hour there is no further charge. If they keep it for more than half of an hour, there is a small additional hourly fee.

Madrid is shockingly walkable, with most vehicle traffic in the core shunted underground and the streets converted into pedestrian spaces. I can't guesstimate at any numbers, but given the enormous amount of foot traffic that we saw all day and night, vehicle traffic must be significantly reduced from what it otherwise would be.

In both the breadth and the impact. While I am heartened by the resolve and determination of the young people, I fear that the scale of the problem would require action on par with abolishing the entrenched economics that was tied up in American slavery.

How we would end the stasis among ordinary people when we still have citizens who believe charging them 10 cents for a paper bag is climate nazism does not leave me too sanguine about the road ahead in mobilizing the immense forces that will be required for a second "Civil War" like battle against TPTB standing in the way of our survival as a species.

Love your essays, thanks for those. Have a good one...

well, on further thought, I guess we talk about it to just about everyone and anyone all the time. I commented recently - why would I drive further and put more carbon in the air - my comment was met with silence

Who told me that as the ice sheets in the artic melt, in the Antarctic they are growing. Im not sure if he really believed that or he was pulling my leg, and frankly, I was too afraid to ask.

You are right, though. Talking about it is what we need to be doing regardless of the obtuseness we are met with. I suspect, and fervently hope, these people are in the minority. I think the real challenge is mobilizing the people who understand the scope of the problem but are either too overwhelmed by fear to do anything about it, or have checked out emotionally because they don't believe anything can, or will be done about it.

Thanks for the kind words about the foodie OT's. I've really been enjoying doing them Smile

I can think of to raise awareness easily, that and sending emails to people, friends and family, with information about cc. Gotta wake folks up.

be a climate emissary

And, yes, take a breath, the ice sheets are melting on both ends of the globe and new studies show that it is happening at an increasingly faster rate. The latest study made top level news on/in most major sites / papers.

More and more people are getting it. What did I say - something about - keep shining the light on the corners until the melt... yeah, that's it heh

keep on shining

Fascinating new research:

Prof Thomas Crowther, one of the authors of the report, told the BBC, "It's the first time that we've been able to understand the world beneath our feet, but at a global scale."

"The research reveals how important mycorrhizal networks are to limiting climate change - and how vulnerable they are to the effects of it.

Research has shown that beneath every forest and wood there is a complex underground web of roots, fungi and bacteria helping to connect trees and plants to one another.

This subterranean social network, nearly 500 million years old, has become known as the "wood wide web".

"Now, an international study has produced the first global map of the "mycorrhizal fungi networks" dominating this secretive world.
[...]
"Just like an MRI scan of the brain helps us to understand how the brain works, this global map of the fungi beneath the soil helps us to understand how global ecosystems work," said Prof Crowther.

"What we find is that certain types of microorganisms live in certain parts of the world, and by understanding that we can figure out how to restore different types of ecosystems and also how the climate is changing."

"Losing chunks of the wood wide web could well increase "the feedback loop of warming temperatures and carbon emissions".

"Mycorrhizal fungi are those that form a symbiotic relationship with plants."https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-48257315

Apparently, this could help us in choosing the best trees to plant where among other things.

Great work, magi, as always. Thank you so much.

Which might explain how trees in forests are able to "alert" one another against foraging predators, like giraffes who eat all their leaves, so that they can secrete an enzyme that makes the leaves on trees the giraffes have not gotten to yet, unappetizing for them to eat.

@Anja Geitz

One of the rare trees to thrive in the savanna, the acacia is one of the most iconic sights in the grasslands. It is also the favored food source of giraffes. It is not uncommon to see a herd of giraffes all gathered around one tree, greedily chowing down.

Their fondness for the acacia has led to something of an evolutionary arms race between the two species. To deter feeding, so species of tree grow thorns as long as 4 inches and as sharp as a knife. To counter this, giraffes evolved an incredibly flexible prehensile tongue that allows them to navigate safely through the brambles.

The trees responded by developing the ability to release tannins in response to injury. The chemicals taste terrible to giraffes and are mildly toxic to them. They even send out chemical signals to nearby trees, warning them to do the same.

This toxic defense forces the giraffes to keep moving upwind, looking for trees that have not yet gotten the memo.

@Anja Geitz It's about a Sussex farm returned to nature. She devotes one whole chapter to the dirt/soil/earth. She talks a lot about the networks within tree plantings; how she had to revise her thinking on a forest canopy in GB to a more open Savanah-like natural landscape.

Lots about sustainability, Mycorrhizal networks, effects of different grazers, browsers, bugs, and modern mono cropping with chemicals. Information packed.

They have some money, but small lots can be returned to a more natural state by ordinary people. There is some planning but in the end can be quite low maintenance.

Right on. I love trees so much. Thanks for posting this. I saw it and then forgot to include it.

Pretty amazing. But on the other hand, didn't we sort of, kinda know that was true on some level.

We are all one. Gaia. One Gaia. We are Gaia.

The Wood Wide Web is what WHY we need to keep the climate conversation on the front burner. No?

with a long-term fix years out

A stretch of southbound Highway 1 on the Sonoma Coast at risk of failure from coastal erosion for two decades has finally been abandoned — the cracked and sagging western-most lane shut down for good last week.
...
The bypass at Gleason Beach was one of 20 fixes initially considered for the area and was selected as the least environmentally damaging. The span is aimed to limit further harm to a creek with historic runs of coho salmon and steelhead trout, as well as surrounding wetlands and tribal sites.

The size of the structure and impacts on the viewshed have drawn criticism. Plans call for extensive habitat restoration, public access and park space.

excellent essay--especially, the Juristac video.

BTW, the second photo (of the tree) looks like the backdrop to one of my Twitter Accounts. Not certain what kind of tree it is, but, they're common to the Gulf Coast.

Anyhoo, thought I'd post a Tweet from the NWS-Fairbanks which exemplifies 'perfect' weather, IMO. One of the many things I miss about Interior Alaska.

Oh, and the fabulous gardens we had up there. For that matter, it was the only place we've ever gardened. It was pretty neat, since you could garden well into the night, due to the super long days.

Have a good one!

The Juristac sacred grounds are a local issue. But the protection of the wildlife and environment is not. Both are equally important. The more visibility they get the better.

It always amazes me how short the growing season is in the north and how it is boosted by the long days. When spring comes it is ecstatic. And the nights are glorious. Thanks for popping in. Good to see you as always and thanks for keeping on the medicare issue. Oh, the picture you mentioned is an oak tree at Elk Horn Slew.

Have a good one, yourself... Lol

scenery!

Next week, I'll post the photo of the tree on my Twitter account banner. Hopefully, you can tell me if it's an Oak. (Sure looks like the same tree, to me. I imagine I'm the only person on this site who can't positively identify such a common tree. Smile )

Hope you're enjoying the long holiday weekend. Stay safe.

Thank you for thanking me. Smile This goes out to a lot of people, and more and more are signing up. I went to an XR (Extinction Rebellion) event at the grange last night put on by our local SC Climate Action Network. There were over 100 people there. It will grow. People are waking up. Yay. Probably 75 people signed up for the newsletter (this) which I send out weekly.

I am frustrated that people are not aware of the Breakdown and this is what I thought I could do to help get the word out. At least it's something. A good resource. Things to pass on to people. A place to come to find information archived. (All the issues are archived on my website.)

Thanks for reading. Have a good one...
