I Need Some Input

I've been optimizing the site code and architecture the last few days, you should see a noticeable improvement in the time it takes to load the pages.

My question is: this morning I received an email from a member stating that after a recent FireFox automatic update the text on the site is displayed in bold. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Have you seen any other anomalies that have popped up over the last few days?

Have you seen any gold coins laying around anywhere lately, because if you have, they're mine. I swear, I misplaced them and can't figure out where they are.

Thanks.

@detroitmechworks
the text in the text editor is normal, but all posts are bold, including all comments and essays?

I'm not seeing it on my end that's why I ask. But I don't allow automatic FireFox updates, I wait for a while for the bugs to be ironed out. Did you notice the change in the text before or after the FF update?

Regarding the bold type — I have mentioned this before, but this site displays in all bold type on my iPad and iPhone (which are the only devices I have available most of the time). Everything is in bold, and applying bold formatting has no effect. This has been ever since I “upgraded” to iOS 11 a few months ago. This is not a setting on my devices. It is only on c99 that I get all bold text. A few others who use iOS devices said they had the same issue.

The site does seem to be loading a bit faster this morning. I have to play around a little more to see what’s different. Thank you!

I use Google Chrome almost exclusively, but I also checked the site in Firefox and Microsoft Edge.

  • Google Chrome - The essay titles and text have always appeared in bold for a long time.
  • Microsoft Edge - Same as for Google Chrome.
  • Firefox - The essay titles appear in bold, but the text appears in regular print, not bold.

When it comes to technology, I'm a Luddite compared to many others on caucus99perecent. So, anything you do to improve this website is greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Much better!

Thanks, brother.

Always have at least a few pages open on both my computer and phone. The phone had always been more difficult to read, with everything bolded (and additionally you lose any of the bold for emphasis that writers use).

Just opened a new page on the phone and it was like the computer. Then reloaded an older page and it came back without the bold.

Looks great!

Why are some bolded texts bolded and others yellow? Or is there a different icon for making it yellow?

I see this in the EBs too when Joe uses bold. I've seen this off and on for a year or so. It's not a problem, I'm just curious about it. My bolding is always black.

Tweets have been hit and miss for some reason. I didn't think that the problem was on this end. Guess I was wondering if anyone else noticed that.

Was Humpty Dumpty pushed?

@snoopydawg
That's not bolding, that's an alternative to the underline tag, click the "U" underline icon or use the underline tag and that's what you'll get. I kind of like it as it stands out more, but I can change it back to the standard underline if folks are adverse to it.

formatted using the *underline* formatting. Instead of underline, it applies a yellow highlight. I’ve been using that in place of bold (which didn’t do antything) for months now.

I love the new lighter look! It’s almost funny, after finally adjusting to the bold, now it seems so airy and light, it’s a bit disconcerting. But yes, much better! Thank you JtC!

If I'm understanding you correctly, this is due to a difference in compound employments:

Add bold to italics, and you'll get this. Nice, black, italic text.

Add bold to underlined, and you'll get this instead: bold text under yellow highlighting.

about this issue, CoE, your email set me on the hunt.

I adjusted the font weight, which didn't seem to be an issue until just lately. I suspect as browsers evolve they read HTML differently than they used to, yay technological advancement, right?

In my opinion they really screwed FireFox up when the platform was changed starting back with version 57, many of my favorite extensions no longer work and aren't going to be updated. The bastids.

I agree. Before the huge Firefox 57 change, I had a browser that was under my control, doing what I wanted. Hell, mine even looked like what I wanted - I made it look like the old Netscape browser. I could do hundreds of tricks with it and the many extensions offered. Now, it's pretty much no different than anything else. No soul.

It's fast, yes. That's about it. I'd trade the (slight) speed increase for the old usability any day. Even if they went back - which they will never do - I doubt the developers of the hundreds of extensions would return to the fold. Fool me once......

I saw the numbers a little while ago re browser usage. It's not good:

Eight years ago, Firefox accounted for more than a quarter of the globe's browser share. That's fallen to less than a tenth. More importantly, the trend for Firefox looks ugly. If the six-month average holds, Firefox will drop below 9% by September, then slide under 8% by January 2019.

Mozilla was on the right track, but threw the baby out with the bathwater when they did the changes starting with version 57. Sad.

@Wink
or I would have fixed it earlier. A couple of members had mentioned it a while back but I couldn't replicate it so I couldn't track down the problem. After Citizen Of Earth emailed me this morning and mention that it happened after a FireFox update and I was able to confirm this with other users in this essay, then I was able to update FF myself to see the problem and then rectify it.

Folks need to let me know if things go awry, with so many different device configurations out there things don't always display on my setup as they do on yours. Bottom line is, If I can replicate the problem then chances are pretty good that it can be fixed.

Genetics or coincidence, my brother grew up to be a gay rights activist in San Francisco.

For nearly 40 years, the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus has served as an international standard bearer for a powerful mix of extraordinary musical excellence and mission-driven activism. Founded in 1978, SFGMC was the first choral organization to courageously proclaim its orientation in its name and is credited with helping start the LGBT choral movement that now spans the entire globe, galvanizing and changing the course of LGBT history.

Biography of Hon. Franklin A. Griffin

Judge Griffin finished his schooling in Sacramento, having graduated from high school when sixteen years old. As a youth, he cherished the ambition to become a lawyer, and he held steadfastly to this purpose.

After leaving high school, faced with the necessity of earning his own livelihood, he secured a position of clerical nature in the city engineering department of Sacramento. Later, he was employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad in similar capacity in Sacramento. Soon after he found opportunity to enter the law office of White & Seymour, the members of which firm were among the foremost lawyers of Sacramento, and under their guidance Judge Griffin studied assiduously in preparation for his future career.

Eventually he felt himself in readiness for entering the practice, and on August 31, 1899, he was successful in passing the bar examination. He remained in private practice in Sacramento until 1904, in which year he came to San Francisco to enter the law office of Hiram W. Johnson, who is now United States senator from California.

When Senator Johnson became governor of the state, Judge Griffin accompanied him to the state capital as his executive secretary, and in this position served for two years. His knowledge of jurisprudence and his exceptional ability in legal procedure having become obvious to the governor, the latter appointed him to the superior bench in August, 1913, and thereupon Judge Griffin returned to San Francisco.

Subsequently, he was elected to the office, and has remained continuously therein. His fine sense of justice and unquestionable honesty have been most gratifying to the citizens, and he has given unremittingly of his efforts to the position which is the fulfillment of his boyhood dreams.

... and three years later was The Preparedness Day bombing, the perpetrators never ever brought to justice. Instead, the union labor organizers Tom Mooney and Warren Billings went to prison. The long arc of my short family history sucks, it's like a yoke around my neck. just yank it
