Six Ways From Sunday: CIA's possible illegal surveillance of Trump and Clinton campaigns

After reading the great diary,

Bombshell looming Re: Inspector General's report?

and the comments it generated, I just wanted more, and I wanted a way to better understand the sequence of events of Russiagate. In the process, I came across an investigative site that goes into enormous depth and provides TIMELINES, which are really helpful and appear to be sortable for the author, in the way that the History Commons has provided timelines for 9/11 research.

The author is Jeff Carlson. I highly recommend his site to all who are interested in the legal and investigative elements of Russiagate.

From my limited reading, his point seems to be that the October 21, 2016 FISA Warrant on Carter Page was a way of justifying previous illegal surveillance, whether by the FBI or the CIA, but not just on the Trump campaign. I think what we're seeing in the Russia attributions is that either the FBI was investigating Clinton or that the CIA was routinely spying on both campaigns for the purposes of having power over both sets of political camps, regardless of who was elected. The leaks to Wikileaks may have been by lower level DNC or FBI staff who had become disgruntled over illegal activity they saw but were prevented from acting upon.

Key to Carlson's timelines are the actions by NSA Director Rogers:

https://www.themarketswork.com/2018/05/21/john-carlin-the-former-nsd-hea...

… Here’s the Rogers timeline:

November 2015-April 2016 – The FBI and DOJ’s National Security Division (NSD) uses private contractors to access raw FISA information using “To” and “From” FISA-702(16) & “About” FISA-702(17) queries.
March 2016 – NSA Director Rogers becomes aware of improper access to raw FISA data.
April 2016 – Rogers orders the NSA compliance officer to run a full audit on 702 NSA compliance.
April 18 2016 – Rogers shuts down FBI/NSD contractor access to the FISA Search System.
September 26 2016 – DOJ’s NSD Head John Carlin files the Government’s proposed 2016 Section 702 certifications. Carlin has been aware of Rogers’ compliance review.
September 27 2016 – Carlin announces he is resigning. Mary McCord will later assume his position.
October 4 2016 – a follow-up hearing on the 2016 Section 702 Certification was held. Carlin is still with the NSD at this time.
October 15 2016 – Carlin formally leaves the NSD.
Mid-October 2016 – DNI Clapper submits a recommendation to the White House that Director Rogers be removed from the NSA.
October 20 2016 – Rogers is briefed by the NSA compliance officer on the Section 702 NSA compliance audit and “About” query violations.
October 21 2016 – Rogers shuts down all “About Query” activity. Rogers reports the activity to DOJ and prepares to go before the FISA Court.
October 21 2016 – DOJ & FBI seek and receive a Title I FISA probable cause order authorizing electronic surveillance on Carter Page from the FISC. At this point, the FISA Court is unaware of the Section 702 violations.
October 24 2016 – Rogers verbally informs the FISA Court of Section 702(17) violations.
October 26 2016 – Rogers formally informs the FISA Court of 702(17) violations in writing.
November 17 2016 (morning) – Rogers travels to meet President-Elect Trump and his Transition Team in Trump Tower. Rogers does not inform DNI James Clapper.
November 17 2016 (evening) – Trump Transition Team announces they are moving all transition activity to Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey.

I get the gist of it; but it is so complicated that a decent lawyer could finagle his way out of these accusations.

And, it won't go to court, except the court of ignorant public opinion.

Thanks for the pointer.

@arendt Even with my reptilian brain, working at maximum capacity, I understand quite clearly that Adm. Rogers was on to all the bullshit which the Swamp wanted to keep submerged. Don't need no lawyers, but some Tabasco sauce would be nice.

Mmmmh!

This is incredible. I had previously read that Obama wanted to fire Rogers in the fall of 2016 but felt that by doing so, it would be attributed to being a political firing.

Thank you for posting this. I think we may be hearing in the near future about how extensive this illegal surveillance may have been.

Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?

@Linda Wood

Got that up to go through it again when I'm feeling better - there's so much detail and so many connections...

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

Not Henry Kissinger's picture

Do we know yet who they were?

Dollars to Dems there's some roundabout connection to the Clinton/Bush cabal somewhere in there.

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?

for the email scandal, so the security services already had plenty on Her (which upper management hid as best they could).

The Trump illegal surveillance was an attempt to level the amount of dirt on the other end of the playing field.

The leaks to Wikileaks may have been by lower level DNC or FBI staff who had become disgruntled over illegal activity they saw but were prevented from acting upon.

Disgruntled (but high level) DNC staffer Seth Rich still seems the most likely wikileaker.
