Mindblowing - Bill Binney articulates the reach of the Deep State

Jimmy Dore titled this interview "Mindblowing." I've watched this twice and I think that his description is correct.

NSA whistleblower William Binney describes the government's use of a toolkit that was developed under the guise of fighting terrorism and was then applied to domestic crime. It is now being used by the deep state to shape American politics. It's quite something to watch Jimmy Dore's mind being blown as he realizes the scope of what Binney is describing.

If Binney is accurate in his description, it goes to show that no matter how cynical you thought you were, you probably weren't cynical enough.

If the truth ever gets out about this and this is prosecuted, how many people are going to be caught up in this? If no one does anything about this, then we are no longer a legitimate country if we ever were.

The judges know that the cops get their information from the DEA, FBI and the CIA when they arrest people with drugs after pulling them over for broken taillights or say that they were speeding and they just go along with it. Their job is to uphold the constitution and to keep the executive branches in check.

I'm betting that if this does get to the Supreme Court, they too will not uphold the constitution.

This is who we are relying on to see whether we are a nation of laws or a nation of men.

Thank you, mimi. Yes, it was funny and a fun show. if it was on Netflix i'd watch a few episodes now.

Realizing i knew all the words to something I hadn't thought about in decades made me wonder what else from tv is so strongly and permanently imprinted in my brain. How brainwashed am I? As Azazello said, the power of the picture box. As you say though, good to know my memory is working, hmm?

As Binney said in the interview, the reason this parallel universe of parallel deception is only starting to get some air time is because now politicians are starting to realize that weapons of deconstitutionalization are now being utilized against some of their own. It's not bad enough that secret spying, the stuff that Clapper said Never happens, continues, but it is introduced as secret evidence to secure criminal cases which could never be brought without such intrusion. Fourth Amendment? Whazzat? Even worse is the unlawful two-step brand of illegal hopscotch which can widen the nets ensnaring other goldfish, who are twice removed from the original instance of alleged crime.

Müller knows this and undoubtedly allows this to go on. He certainly voices no objection to illegally obtained FISA court warrant applications--making him a co-conspirator in a vastly encompassing conspiracy of lies. As an "officer" of the court, countenancing fraud is in itself fraud.

Binney thinks chief Scotus Judge John Roberts knows about this and passively accepting of its existence. If true, we are done as a representative democracy. We have wifi chains binding us much more securely that Commissars on the Block ever could.

it was ok with them when some marginal figures like eliot spitzer got picked off for getting a little too big for their britches.

(I may have woke up in a slightly cranky mood.)

So much of this is old news. (But thank you, joe. Glad to see the interview! The Nunes memo info is something i will have to look into more before I can comment directly on treason, etc. Thanks for the link, mimi.)

Our orgs such as ACLU and EFF should be raising hell about this. Not much an individual can do. Maybe as Binney suggests, bring it up to your reps in townhalls, etc., to publicize it. Of course we should all be in the streets, but even that is too scary for most folks to do now with our militarized police and the risk of being locked up without trial and other unconstitutional harms that are now common place.

It also bugs me that Binney and Dore laugh through the entire discussion. Sure, it's human nature. It's a laugh of resignation. "Oh well, that's life. hahaha." It needed to be presented in all seriousness. It reminds me of my feelings of newspapers. The average person takes a cue from presentation. Say for example an article on this on page 4 with a regular sized headline will be given less importance than the exactly same worded article on the front page with a large type headline. The average person has enough trouble understanding some of these issues, and takes cues whether they realize it or not.

For being so connected, Binney repeatedly mispronounces Mueller's name.

As for reporters being afraid to report it, somehow I knew about it, and joe, you did too. (Parallel construction.) (And "secret court" for that matter.) We have discussed in on TEB. I don't recall from where or how long ago (a long time) I first heard about parallel construction. It's another one of those fairly common knowledge things that we are apparently helpless against.

Now, I'm realizing I didn't wake up cranky. I got cranky while watching this video!

It also bugs me that Binney and Dore laugh through the entire discussion. Sure, it's human nature. It's a laugh of resignation. "Oh well, that's life. hahaha."

I don't read it this way. Dore laughs because he is helplessly upset and unsettledly embarrassed about what he just heard and learned from Binney. Binney always has this certain smile, and I dont' think at all that it is a sign of resignation. Look at the volume of speeches and interviews he did over many, many years.Look at all the work Jimmy Dore puts in to "get in our faces with some truth". Both men really didn't resingate at all in my view.. My be you reread just the wikipedia page. And then tell me, with what Binney and Drake went through, if you were in their place, wouldn't you have that cynical, bitter and a little stinky amused smile on your face as well? What else should they do? Cry?

I remember I was once at a small event at the German Historical Institute in Washington DC, where Drake, Binney and Kiriakou and Jessely Radack were in a panel. It was a small audience. And my memory might fail me. But I remember that Joe Shikspack was at that meeting. As we didn't know each other, he realized that we were both in the same room among panel discussion's audience, through some comments I made, later, probably at TOP, because thats the only place I talked at all. I think that was 2013 or 2014. I am sure he remembers that panel much better than I do. I can't find any link to it. Probably if one would go into the archives of the German Historical Institute they may have something on that event.

Here is some documentary in case you never have seen those.

Or watch the movie "A Good American".. .

I have forgotten about them and I can't tell you if I would like those today or not. But I think it's at least a way to know more about Binney and Drake or at least it would help to not get worked up over two men smiling in certain ways.

Ok, may be I got cranky now, because you criticized some people, who really didn't deserve it, imo.

No offense to you personally, your comment just rubbed me the wrong way.

yep, there is a lot of old news in there. on the other hand, it is new to an awful lot of people. you and i have been paying attention for quite a while, most people not so much.

one of the big reasons that i started doing the evening blues in the first place over at top was because i found so many of my interlocutors over there so woefully under informed (or misinformed).

i was not put off by the laughter, jimmy dore is after all a comedian. perhaps at this point in the life of the empire the jester is the only one who can tell the truth without fear of the king's wrath. comedians seem to offer far more penetrating, concise analysis of politics these days than you will ever find on the news media. it's my feeling that the more this news circulates the better, even if it has a laugh track.

Since TIA. Don't know how I missed it.

I was using a phrase "retroactive permission" to describe what was happening with the FISA court. I had never heard anyone actually discuss the intricacies of our Great Star Chamber.

While it was pretty amazing to hear my understanding of FISA to be proven true from a legit source, it was a bit too much for me.

I still blanched at the depth of lawlessness involved in this simple legal loophole. It was a lot to take in. The gallows humor didn't help with presentation, but it certainly put me more at ease; a good thing for me and perhaps many on this site, not so good for those waking up or still sleeping.

tl;dr Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney sued the FBI in Federal court, before a jury of peers, and they won. Good morning and thanks for the video.
APRIL 8, 2002 in front of the Federal Courthouse in Oakland is where I saw the sign, I remember the blatant truth shocked me . Ask Native Americans. [ABOLISH THE FBI] Yeah, Jimmy was naive, and there is no "undo" so that's good. Back to 2002,

At noon today, Earth First! will hold a support rally in front of the courthouse. Speakers and performers will include acclaimed author and international activist Starhawk, Leonard Peltier Defense Committee spokesperson Linda Sixfeathers, musician and activist Alice diMicele, and Judi Bari’s oldest daughter Lisa Bari, who was nine when her mother was the victim of the bomb blast in her car.

April 8th is my brother's birthday and death day so it is special to me anyway. Starhawk made some powerful magic with ancestral visualizations. woo

As the FBI's contention that the bombing was an accidental detonation was shown to be completely implausible in the face of physical evidence, the theory that the assailant was related to the FBI gained currency. Within a year, Bari developed the theory that the bomber was an acquaintance of hers whom she suspected of being an FBI informant. The close resemblance of the May 24 bombing of Bari's car to "crime scenes" fabricated by the FBI in a "bomb school" held in redwood country earlier that year, as discovered during depositions for Bari's Civil Rights lawsuit in 1994, was taken by Bari and her followers as supporting evidence that the FBI was responsible for the bombing. The FBI school was intended to train local and state police officers on how to investigate bomb scenes. The school taught that bomb explosions inside a vehicle were not likely to involve targets of bombing but indicated the knowing, criminal transportation of homemade bombs. This was said to be because it was difficult to break into a locked car to plant a bomb. Nevertheless, two of the three bombs set off as a practicum for the school were placed inside automobiles.[34][35]

According to Bari, FBI Special Agent Frank Doyle was the bomb school instructor, and at least four of the law enforcement responders to the bombing were his students at the school.[35]

Bari had received numerous death threats citing her anti-logging activism in the weeks before the bombing. She had reported them to local police, and after the bombing, Bari's attorney turned written threats over to the FBI for investigation. The local police and the FBI never investigated, court evidence later showed.[36]

Jury Awards $4.4 Million Damages to Bari and Cherney

The American public needs to understand that the FBI can't be trusted. Ten jurors got a good, hard look at the FBI and they didn't like what they saw. Earth First! is known for blockading things like clearcuts. Today we blockaded the FBI from clearcutting the Constitution.

@Cant Stop the Macedonian Signal thanks, here's the wiki List of amendments to the United States Constitution, and nice photo to go with.

Twenty-seven of these, having been ratified by the requisite number of states, are part of the Constitution. The first ten amendments were adopted and ratified simultaneously and are known collectively as the Bill of Rights. Six amendments adopted by Congress and sent to the states have not been ratified by the required number of states. Four of these amendments are still technically open and pending, one is closed and has failed by its own terms, and one is closed and has failed by the terms of the resolution proposing it.

Judi and Darryl were innocent, they did not bomb themselves. Nobody was arrested, nobody was charged, nobody roams free in Cloverdale today, I think they post online in the local paper, good old boys full of free market pride and joy. Cuckoos for coco puffs.

Eighty percent of the damages were for violation of free speech rights under the First Amendment, validating Bari and Cherney's longstanding claim that they were targeted for false charges because of their political activism for the redwoods. The balance of the damages were for the Fourth Amendment violations of false arrest and unlawful search.

Plutocrats don't seem interested in restoring civil rights, that's what it looks like to me. Surrounded by psychos.

P.S. The best day I ever had was a group day in the redwoods with Judi Bari, when she said "If they were trying to shut me up, they blew up the wrong end" and we laughed about it but it wasn't that funny. She couldn't really sit or drive or walk right after they bombed her, in pain she still kept going. Drove us around in her van, reciting history of the Pygmy Forest nearby off the top of her head. Righteous to the end she was amazing. right on

Eliot Spitzer. The NYS AG was set up by the Bush Crime Family, who also abused the FISA courts to demonize and destroy their political rivals.

In that case, if I remember correctly, Spitzer had been compiling evidence to indict the Bush administration for ties to financial calamities that would lay some of the bedrock for the '08 crash.

I have a friend afflicted with the precondition of reactionary Conservatism (although the kind of full scale MSM propaganda hit-job orchestrated by the implicated Rethugs also effected the views of LW people, by the sheer scale and blanketing of coverage) who was still clutching his pearls years later in dislike for Spitzer because his Catholic morals were offended by Spitzer's preference for call girls (but not so much for the millions of people thrown out of their homes because of fraudulent mortgages cooked up by Wall St).

Good film made by Alex Gibney on how he was setup, called "Client 9" (sorry for what looks like a tawdry link, but was the only one I could find).

Incidentally saw it on Netflix. And during a protest at the Citibank building in Long Island City, got to talking with a few of the cops who were sent to protect the thousands of Citibank employees sitting in their cubicles in the highest office building in the boroughs (at that time, may still be but that's doubtful with the insane real estate tycoon takeover of NYC) from the handful of peaceful middle-aged protesters, even as we included radical author/former British emissary Carne Ross. Found out that some of these guys (surprise!) are just regular dudes too, and are curious about what they see and here out at protests and see in the "news." One told me he had watched that film, and suggested Spitzer was set up, and had seen others of that ilk which were challenging the status quo being reported about political events/people.

Point is, people are so snowed in by propaganda that sometimes they just need to be gently nudged in the right direction (that some are already moving in), to seek out a deeper truth, which means becoming more discerning about the rapid fire bullshit hosing us from all directions.

To Elliot Spitzer too but wasn't sure about the context. God. This is worse then I thought.

I was also equally jarred to hear that the CEO of Quest Communications was falsely set up by the FBI and incarcerated for 5 years. I remember when he refused to comply and was heartened back then that a CEO anywhere had exhibited that much integrity. To learn now, after all this time, that his integrity was "rewarded" by our thuggish government as a punitive measure, disgusts and scares the shit out of me.

OTOH, to a lesser extent, it also informs me of where the arrogance comes from and why political crime families believe they can flaunt their crimes in all our faces with impunity. I guess people like the Clintons and the Bushes really do think they're so powerful that nothing can touch them.

Very plausible next step, in the elites’ evolution towards technologically ever higher, morally ever lower forms of totalitarian control.

I thought this old interview with Ray McGovern and Bill about the DNC leak was really good too. (11 min) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1BZD6UX3wU

The documentary of Bill's saga in the NSA "A Good American" is also worth a watch for those of you who have not seen it. http://agoodamerican.org/

On my list to watch is the documentary about Binney; The Good American
It was recommended by Lookout way back when, I started it but have yet to finish. As was suggested above in the comments, we all know this stuff...sort of... but it is still startling to hear it so explicitly.

Friedrich Moser, with Oliver Stone (I think) as Executive Producer.

Official website here:

...a gripping docu-thriller about a groundbreaking surveillance program, the brilliant mastermind behind it and how a perfect alternative to mass surveillance was killed by NSA-management for money – three weeks prior to 9/11.

Bill Binney was a brilliant cryptologist and long-time National Security Agency (NSA) analyst, since 1997 serving as Technical Director. Binney developed a sophisticated program named ThinThread for gathering data capable of providing clues, in real-time, of potential terrorist threats.

Built-in safeguards would have prevented the massive surveillance methods later exposed by Edward Snowden. Why was this program killed off? And who was behind that?

Friedrich Moser’s eye-opening and deeply disturbing documentary tells the complete story of Bill Binney and those, both inside the NSA and out, who backed ThinThread. A program that gathered data, lawfully, effectively, and more inexpensively, than the now discredited programs pursued by the US and EU governments.

It’s also a chilling account of those willing to go on the record and what happened to them when they tried to expose the truth. Could ThinThread have prevented 9/11?

Very likely, as a test-run has shown, whose results are still classified to this day.

The parallels to the German Stasi are striking: unconstitutional wire tapping and spying, framing innocent parties and imprisoning them, government rotten to its core. Binney escaped prison because he is smarter than the corrupt bureaucrats and caught them in their own damn lies.

Binney is a true optimist if he really believes that President Shithole will do the right thing to expose all this. But that would be glorious.

And yet, we could see it coming. The madness was clear when Bush the Simple took the throne. They will easily kill us all, in their terrified state, where their heart-stopping fear of "communism" and a shared economy has completely replaced their sanity.

What would you have done differently if you trusted your instincts at the turn of the Millennium and had some clarity about what's about to happen to us?

I believe that even the US Congress has been compromised. Nancy Pelosi has known about Stellar Wind since it's inception but has had to keep her mouth shut.

From a talk at MIT in 2012

THE GOVERNMENT IS PROFILING YOU: WILLIAM BINNEY (FORMER NSA)

“While spreading an atmosphere of fear after 9/11, our government has violated our laws, prevented the Congress and courts from doing their Constitutional duty, created a surveillance state and concentrated power in the executive, all in the name of keeping us safe. In an effort to reverse these ongoing unconstitutional activities, William Binney revealed the National Security Agency's massive domestic spying program, Stellar Wind, which intercepts domestic communications without protections for US citizens. Binney disclosed that NSA sought and received access to telecommunications companies' domestic and international billing records.”

“He told the public that, since 9/11, the agency has intercepted between 15 and 20 trillion communications. Binney also revealed that the NSA concealed Stellar Wind under the patriotic-sounding "Terrorist Surveillance Program," in order to give cover to the warrant-less surveillance program's violations of Americans' constitutional rights.”
...
Shava Nerad, former ED of TOR Project: My dad was an activist with SCLC and Dr. King, that's how I came into this. When it was possible to request his records from the FBI, from 1963, he got a large paper box. The FBI knew who he had lunch with every summer. This isn't new, it's just electronic. It's been going on for a century, at least. One of the things that being ED of Tor did, my family has leadership positions in government, military, and activist circles. I got to talk to a lot of poeple on the agency side of things. After Patriot act, the people who wanted to respect civil rights and civil liberties, they would be trampled for every promotion in their work and left behind. And there would be no people with those attitudes at the high levels of any of those agencies. It happens in every branch of DHS, in Bush administration. Understanding that even people who deeply believe in these rights are forced into compromising their integrity.

Binney: They're being threatened and intimidated.

SN: people in these agencies aren't all jerks. They literally can't complain. They're prevented from talking about that.

Binney: Stellar Wind knowledge was limited to 4 people, to begin with. Nancy Pelosi, two Senators. Chief and ranking members of House and Senate Intel committees. So, people have no way of validating these things, or monitoring them. They subverted our entire constitutional process.

SN: during the Bush administration, many people held on by their fingernails. Career diplomats gritting their teeth for 8 years, trying to swallow their bile.

Binney: it doesn't get any better with any party, it seems.
...
Bill: Pelosi said 'impeachment of Bush is off the table,' partly because she couldn't impeach him without impeaching herself.

Q: Clarification: we've been talking about the FISA amendment act. The problem there is that internal/external communications are being monitored. But it seems like a red herring, if all communications are being captured.

Bill: the problem is secrecy. We have no way of knowing what they're doing!

Q: Is there a boundary that prevents this warrant-less tapping from entering the courtroom?

Bill: The tap they have on me, they entered it in an affidavit, and said I told them about that conversation.

Q: Where do you see this in 5-10 years, given the fusion centers and whatnot?

Bill: I've said in a number of forums that it's going towards a totalitarian state. We'll have an imperial president, and a dictator. Everyone in Congress is violating the constitution by supporting this activity. We have to throw it in their face. Put them on the record in public.
...
Bill: As citizens of this country: what kind of country do you want? That's what's at stake here.

Q: I was wondering: how much of a threat are private surveillance systems, political surveillance, credit card surveillance, commercial systems.

Bill: credit cards, financial transactions, the standard used to be: if the transaction was more than 10k it went on the list. For 911, they transferred 60k for Atta's flight training. But they don't' analyze things properly, or pay attention. This is now coming back to financial transactions of US citizens. If you fall out of grace with the administration, that problem occurs.

Carol: In the EU system, you own information about yourself. Here, your ISP owns the info. Your banker owns your info. The only exception is video, which is an exception because it was done to a Supreme Court justice. In Europe, you own info about yourself, and the state needs permission. Here, you don't! The NSA just gets it. Now, county prosecutors can go without a warrant and get information about you. We need to change that 3rd party doctrine. I think it can make a big difference.
...

The intelligence agencies are using their unprecedented powers of surveillance to effectively control the American government. Russiagate is nothing but a massive, stinking red herring they are dragging back and forth in front of the gullible public with the collusion of the Mockingbird media. It's sole purpose is to obscure and change the narrative from the can of worms the Nunes memo has opened - the ease at which the FISA court can be subverted for witch hunting inside the US government itself.

The Deep State can pull private info on each and every member of Congress, the media and everyone here in C99. They have copies of every phone call, email, text and tweet you have made since 9/11. They know your banking, where you shop, what you eat, what toothpaste you use, what movies you go to, your hobbies, what kind of porn you are into. They know more about you than your closest confidant.

Knowledge is power. Absolute knowledge is absolute power.

The NSA Thought Police feeds information to the Deep State Inner Party that can make or break ANYONE. They even have the power to change the past with the modification or destruction of current digital documents.

Recent events have proved there are no effective controls in place to protect the people or it's government from the Deep State. The Democratic and Republican political parties have joined at the groin to become INGSOC.

We have always been at war with Russia.

And, short of burning down the Beltway interior and starting over I don't know how we take on Deep State without a lot of blood loss - and Deep State knows it. Is why they're not too worried. One way we can chip away, though, is to call these rat bastid futhermuckers out every chance we get, especially in RL open forums, town halls, city council meetings. Thank the gods our City Council meetings are live streamed, then archived. If yours isn't, have your city council put it in the city budget to pay someone $25 /meeting to videograph the meetings and archive same. Taxpayers aren't going to whine about $1200, $1300 /year, and it pays for a few beers or decent dinner somewhere for the video guy /gal.

Our country is spiraling towards a totalitarian surveillance state that's dragging our congress, our judiciary, and our media (who are either complicit or being held hostage by a weaponized spying system that has a global reach and consequences my imagination cannot even fathom) down a black hole of dystopian proportions.

@snoopydawg The day after or a few days after there were street protests over the election which were not exactly big nor trivial either. One daily paper got the names of the people arrested and found that like something like 50% of the protesters may not have voted (some out of state arrestee voting records could not be found--this was all through public access rules).

Strange protest of an election where maybe up to 50% did not vote.

I have been out of town for the last several days visiting family and have not yet caught up on all the essays and comments here. I did notice that some folks were taken back by the smiling by Jimmy Dore and Bill Binney. I cannot hold anything against either of them for anything, particularly Bill Binney who has been tireless in trying to get the word out to the public at large about how dangerous these programs are and how badly they are being abused.

Binney has been making the rounds of any media that will give him a platform. His message has been consistent in that he insists on how unconstitutional these programs are.
What he has done and is still doing is very patriotic and heroic. And he is doing this all despite being in poor health due to diabetes which has cost him both of his legs.

To me, Bill Binney is a hero. Thank you for this essay, Joe.

Any time I read that cops arrested someone for drugs after a routine traffic stop, I knew that they got information from the DEA. I can't believe that judges don't put a stop to this.
