Mindblowing - Bill Binney articulates the reach of the Deep State
Submitted by joe shikspack on Wed, 02/21/2018 - 12:09am
Jimmy Dore titled this interview "Mindblowing." I've watched this twice and I think that his description is correct.
NSA whistleblower William Binney describes the government's use of a toolkit that was developed under the guise of fighting terrorism and was then applied to domestic crime. It is now being used by the deep state to shape American politics. It's quite something to watch Jimmy Dore's mind being blown as he realizes the scope of what Binney is describing.
If Binney is accurate in his description, it goes to show that no matter how cynical you thought you were, you probably weren't cynical enough.
Comments
morning folks...
i'm headed off to sleep, i'll catch up with comments tomorrow.
Wow. Sedition, felonies, treason and obstruction of justice
If the truth ever gets out about this and this is prosecuted, how many people are going to be caught up in this? If no one does anything about this, then we are no longer a legitimate country if we ever were.
The judges know that the cops get their information from the DEA, FBI and the CIA when they arrest people with drugs after pulling them over for broken taillights or say that they were speeding and they just go along with it. Their job is to uphold the constitution and to keep the executive branches in check.
I'm betting that if this does get to the Supreme Court, they too will not uphold the constitution.
This is who we are relying on to see whether we are a nation of laws or a nation of men.
I'm not holding my breath for Sessions to do what's right.

Who is it.
ah, thanks, I googled her, because these are just
the things I can't know, as I didn't grew up in the US during those times. Thanks.

haha. How depressed should I be to find out I know all the words all these many years later and can sing right along!? It's scary in a way.
That's the power of the picture-box.

Thank you, mimi. Yes, it was funny and a fun show. if it was on Netflix i'd watch a few episodes now.
Realizing i knew all the words to something I hadn't thought about in decades made me wonder what else from tv is so strongly and permanently imprinted in my brain. How brainwashed am I? As Azazello said, the power of the picture box. As you say though, good to know my memory is working, hmm?
I no longer have tv in the house. It was more of a financial reason when I canceled, but I think it has been good for me.

the country is gone, if it isn't already.

The Supreme Court doesn't give a ff about the constitution
Hasn't since Reagan and the GOP goons on the right decided they needed to stack the court with ideologues instead of jurists. Ever since then, the goal has been to see who could get the most goons on the court. I seriously don't believe there is a more corrupt country on the planet mimi. I sure hope Europe doesn't totally succumb to these global thugs.

Edited because I must have hit the wrong thing when I thought I canceled this, lol.

here it the link to the Nunes Memo...
I needed that to be able to understand Dore's show with Binney.
The House Intelligence Committee just released the “Nunes memo” — and it contains some explosive allegations about the FBI.
This interview needs desperately a transcript !!!
https://www.euronews.com/live
Actually hearing how out-of-control
the government is is frightening. People knows there is serious problem. But they (WE) have no idea how bad it really is.
I'm tired of this back-slapping "Isn't humanity neat?" bullshit. We're a virus with shoes, okay? That's all we are. - Bill Hicks
Politics is the entertainment branch of industry. - Frank Zappa
There is a chance--a small chance--that things may change
As Binney said in the interview, the reason this parallel universe of parallel deception is only starting to get some air time is because now politicians are starting to realize that weapons of deconstitutionalization are now being utilized against some of their own. It's not bad enough that secret spying, the stuff that Clapper said Never happens, continues, but it is introduced as secret evidence to secure criminal cases which could never be brought without such intrusion. Fourth Amendment? Whazzat? Even worse is the unlawful two-step brand of illegal hopscotch which can widen the nets ensnaring other goldfish, who are twice removed from the original instance of alleged crime.
Müller knows this and undoubtedly allows this to go on. He certainly voices no objection to illegally obtained FISA court warrant applications--making him a co-conspirator in a vastly encompassing conspiracy of lies. As an "officer" of the court, countenancing fraud is in itself fraud.
Binney thinks chief Scotus Judge John Roberts knows about this and passively accepting of its existence. If true, we are done as a representative democracy. We have wifi chains binding us much more securely that Commissars on the Block ever could.

If you would have told me in the 90s that at this point in time we'd have CIA and NSA Directors revolving-dooring their way into the media to "inform" people on the positives of perpetual war and unlimited, warrantless domestic spying, I'd say you had a nice screenplay on your hands.

in a way, i think that it's worse. the politicians are realizing that this tool of the deep state is going to become a regular feature of partisan politics and that the deep state has been politicized.
it was ok with them when some marginal figures like eliot spitzer got picked off for getting a little too big for their britches.
my guess is that they are more likely to craft a truce among themselves than end the practices being used against the little people - an exercise in honor amongst thieves.
I have to wonder
How long the "honor code" among thieves, murderers, and professional liars would last? Would it supercede their appetite for more wealth and power? Taking the Mafia as a comparison, I'd say it would be a tenuous agreement at best.

America
(I may have woke up in a slightly cranky mood.)
So much of this is old news. (But thank you, joe. Glad to see the interview! The Nunes memo info is something i will have to look into more before I can comment directly on treason, etc. Thanks for the link, mimi.)
Our orgs such as ACLU and EFF should be raising hell about this. Not much an individual can do. Maybe as Binney suggests, bring it up to your reps in townhalls, etc., to publicize it. Of course we should all be in the streets, but even that is too scary for most folks to do now with our militarized police and the risk of being locked up without trial and other unconstitutional harms that are now common place.
It also bugs me that Binney and Dore laugh through the entire discussion. Sure, it's human nature. It's a laugh of resignation. "Oh well, that's life. hahaha." It needed to be presented in all seriousness. It reminds me of my feelings of newspapers. The average person takes a cue from presentation. Say for example an article on this on page 4 with a regular sized headline will be given less importance than the exactly same worded article on the front page with a large type headline. The average person has enough trouble understanding some of these issues, and takes cues whether they realize it or not.
For being so connected, Binney repeatedly mispronounces Mueller's name.
As for reporters being afraid to report it, somehow I knew about it, and joe, you did too. (Parallel construction.) (And "secret court" for that matter.) We have discussed in on TEB. I don't recall from where or how long ago (a long time) I first heard about parallel construction. It's another one of those fairly common knowledge things that we are apparently helpless against.
Now, I'm realizing I didn't wake up cranky. I got cranky while watching this video!
America. From an old tagline: She is so much not like her hype.
The American people are the most propagandized people in the history of the world. At least in other oppressive countries the citizenry knows they are oppressed and surveilled. Americans tend to believe they have a Constitution protecting them. Someone near me says not to worry. We have "checks and balances." !!!
…
Good morning, everybody!
My guts tell me otherwise, but YMMV.
(edited the second video link for part 2 of the Drake video)
I don't read it this way. Dore laughs because he is helplessly upset and unsettledly embarrassed about what he just heard and learned from Binney. Binney always has this certain smile, and I dont' think at all that it is a sign of resignation. Look at the volume of speeches and interviews he did over many, many years.Look at all the work Jimmy Dore puts in to "get in our faces with some truth". Both men really didn't resingate at all in my view.. My be you reread just the wikipedia page. And then tell me, with what Binney and Drake went through, if you were in their place, wouldn't you have that cynical, bitter and a little stinky amused smile on your face as well? What else should they do? Cry?
I remember I was once at a small event at the German Historical Institute in Washington DC, where Drake, Binney and Kiriakou and Jessely Radack were in a panel. It was a small audience. And my memory might fail me. But I remember that Joe Shikspack was at that meeting. As we didn't know each other, he realized that we were both in the same room among panel discussion's audience, through some comments I made, later, probably at TOP, because thats the only place I talked at all. I think that was 2013 or 2014. I am sure he remembers that panel much better than I do. I can't find any link to it. Probably if one would go into the archives of the German Historical Institute they may have something on that event.
Here is some documentary in case you never have seen those.

Or watch the movie "A Good American".. .
I have forgotten about them and I can't tell you if I would like those today or not. But I think it's at least a way to know more about Binney and Drake or at least it would help to not get worked up over two men smiling in certain ways.
Ok, may be I got cranky now, because you criticized some people, who really didn't deserve it, imo.
No offense to you personally, your comment just rubbed me the wrong way.
I want peace, at least on this litte rescue boat we all cling to.
So forgive me my "in your face" wording. It's easy to get cranky these days. Let's give us some slack and go on.

afternoon olinda...
yep, there is a lot of old news in there. on the other hand, it is new to an awful lot of people. you and i have been paying attention for quite a while, most people not so much.
one of the big reasons that i started doing the evening blues in the first place over at top was because i found so many of my interlocutors over there so woefully under informed (or misinformed).
i was not put off by the laughter, jimmy dore is after all a comedian. perhaps at this point in the life of the empire the jester is the only one who can tell the truth without fear of the king's wrath. comedians seem to offer far more penetrating, concise analysis of politics these days than you will ever find on the news media. it's my feeling that the more this news circulates the better, even if it has a laugh track.
this is what americans want to believe. most of us know better.
'laugh track'
Thank you, joe. Hope you had a nice sleep and morning. You have a lot of comments to catch up on. Your essay was obviously needed and well received!
Good point: It did occur to me that Dore is a comedian and it's a comedy show, although as you say, he does some great analysis and informs people. Maybe he needs to keep it somewhat light for that reason.
---
off topic - i've listened to most of the Risen/Greenwald debate. Taibbi was right in his comment about that fight. I was surprised, and it is nice to get to see more of Risen's personality. The podcast is a portion of the debate and all of it is supposed to be posted at The Intercept today or tonight. Maybe we can talk more at TEB later.
OLinda, I just wanted to apologize in public to you
it is clear that I don't know much and don't know you and it was inappropriate to show my frustration about your comment. I am sorry. You are an insider, old-timer with lots and lots of knowledge and I am an outsider, newcomers with nothing to offer than my guts and feelings without any knowledge and with a fading memory.
I hope you forgive me.

Thanks, mimi
Thank you, mimi. But, no need to apologize, really. I didn't reply because I didn't know what to say, but there were, and are, no hard feelings. I appreciate your comment.
Parallel Construction Was New to Me, and I've Been On This Beat
Since TIA. Don't know how I missed it.
I was using a phrase "retroactive permission" to describe what was happening with the FISA court. I had never heard anyone actually discuss the intricacies of our Great Star Chamber.
While it was pretty amazing to hear my understanding of FISA to be proven true from a legit source, it was a bit too much for me.
I still blanched at the depth of lawlessness involved in this simple legal loophole. It was a lot to take in. The gallows humor didn't help with presentation, but it certainly put me more at ease; a good thing for me and perhaps many on this site, not so good for those waking up or still sleeping.

Judi and Darryl were innocent, they did not bomb themselves. Nobody was arrested, nobody was charged, nobody roams free in Cloverdale today, I think they post online in the local paper, good old boys full of free market pride and joy. Cuckoos for coco puffs.
Plutocrats don't seem interested in restoring civil rights, that's what it looks like to me. Surrounded by psychos.
P.S. The best day I ever had was a group day in the redwoods with Judi Bari, when she said "If they were trying to shut me up, they blew up the wrong end" and we laughed about it but it wasn't that funny. She couldn't really sit or drive or walk right after they bombed her, in pain she still kept going. Drove us around in her van, reciting history of the Pygmy Forest nearby off the top of her head. Righteous to the end she was amazing. right on
Forgot about that one. Binney mentions
Eliot Spitzer. The NYS AG was set up by the Bush Crime Family, who also abused the FISA courts to demonize and destroy their political rivals.
In that case, if I remember correctly, Spitzer had been compiling evidence to indict the Bush administration for ties to financial calamities that would lay some of the bedrock for the '08 crash.
I have a friend afflicted with the precondition of reactionary Conservatism (although the kind of full scale MSM propaganda hit-job orchestrated by the implicated Rethugs also effected the views of LW people, by the sheer scale and blanketing of coverage) who was still clutching his pearls years later in dislike for Spitzer because his Catholic morals were offended by Spitzer's preference for call girls (but not so much for the millions of people thrown out of their homes because of fraudulent mortgages cooked up by Wall St).
Good film made by Alex Gibney on how he was setup, called "Client 9" (sorry for what looks like a tawdry link, but was the only one I could find).
Incidentally saw it on Netflix. And during a protest at the Citibank building in Long Island City, got to talking with a few of the cops who were sent to protect the thousands of Citibank employees sitting in their cubicles in the highest office building in the boroughs (at that time, may still be but that's doubtful with the insane real estate tycoon takeover of NYC) from the handful of peaceful middle-aged protesters, even as we included radical author/former British emissary Carne Ross. Found out that some of these guys (surprise!) are just regular dudes too, and are curious about what they see and here out at protests and see in the "news." One told me he had watched that film, and suggested Spitzer was set up, and had seen others of that ilk which were challenging the status quo being reported about political events/people.
Point is, people are so snowed in by propaganda that sometimes they just need to be gently nudged in the right direction (that some are already moving in), to seek out a deeper truth, which means becoming more discerning about the rapid fire bullshit hosing us from all directions.

I caught Binneys reference
To Elliot Spitzer too but wasn't sure about the context. God. This is worse then I thought.
I was also equally jarred to hear that the CEO of Quest Communications was falsely set up by the FBI and incarcerated for 5 years. I remember when he refused to comply and was heartened back then that a CEO anywhere had exhibited that much integrity. To learn now, after all this time, that his integrity was "rewarded" by our thuggish government as a punitive measure, disgusts and scares the shit out of me.
OTOH, to a lesser extent, it also informs me of where the arrogance comes from and why political crime families believe they can flaunt their crimes in all our faces with impunity. I guess people like the Clintons and the Bushes really do think they're so powerful that nothing can touch them.

On my list to watch is the documentary about Binney; The Good American
It was recommended by Lookout way back when, I started it but have yet to finish. As was suggested above in the comments, we all know this stuff...sort of... but it is still startling to hear it so explicitly.

in the comment above me but you're the one lookout who alerted me to Binney. All this is heartbreaking and exhausting, but hey, look at Binney, he is no spring chicken and he has the spirit. Some of the kids have the spirit too, and they have the energy. The reason for this place....share the knowledge. Don't loose the spirit and sing.
NSA - National Stasi Agency
The parallels to the German Stasi are striking: unconstitutional wire tapping and spying, framing innocent parties and imprisoning them, government rotten to its core. Binney escaped prison because he is smarter than the corrupt bureaucrats and caught them in their own damn lies.
Binney is a true optimist if he really believes that President Shithole will do the right thing to expose all this. But that would be glorious.

NSAThought Police feeds information to theDeep StateInner Party that can make or break ANYONE. They even have the power to change the past with the modification or destruction of current digital documents.Recent events have proved there are no effective controls in place to protect the people or it's government from the Deep State. The Democratic and Republican political parties have joined at the groin to become INGSOC.
The totalitarian state is already here.
When the TSA was created I quit flying because of it. I thought that more people would have been upset about that, but no. They said that it's a small price to pay to keep us safe. BS!
Now people watch as little children, the elderly in wheelchairs and disabled veterans are groped by some Two Bit Hackney. And then they take their shoes off.
Great comment. All of the comments here are great. Thanks, joe

Some Detroit blues to celebrate the 20% leftover stuff.
Thanks, Joe!
yeah, I think most here know we are fucked.
Binney just reminds us it's even worse than we thought.
The man's a true patriot.
And, short of burning down the Beltway interior and starting over I don't know how we take on Deep State without a lot of blood loss - and Deep State knows it. Is why they're not too worried. One way we can chip away, though, is to call these rat bastid futhermuckers out every chance we get, especially in RL open forums, town halls, city council meetings. Thank the gods our City Council meetings are live streamed, then archived. If yours isn't, have your city council put it in the city budget to pay someone $25 /meeting to videograph the meetings and archive same. Taxpayers aren't going to whine about $1200, $1300 /year, and it pays for a few beers or decent dinner somewhere for the video guy /gal.
"Mr. Mayor, council, I'm not here tonight on city business so much as I am to point out the corruption at the highest levels of our federal government, which citizens can learn about by following the work of William Binney on social media or contacting me at (email address). Thank you very much."

I thought I already was a cynic
But you're right, Joe, I wasn't cynical enough for this.
Our country is spiraling towards a totalitarian surveillance state that's dragging our congress, our judiciary, and our media (who are either complicit or being held hostage by a weaponized spying system that has a global reach and consequences my imagination cannot even fathom) down a black hole of dystopian proportions.
What's left then?

Nancy: And swim the English Channel?
Prof: No. No. To ancient Greece where burning Sapho stood beside the wine dark sea. Wa de do da! Nancy, I’ve invented a time machine!

Imagine if we had internet blogs in the 70's
during the Church committee hearings. We shouldn't have our minds blown over this because it's nothing new, different, more insidious maybe (what about MK Ultra, or J. Edgar Hoover?), but nothing new. It seems that each generation goes through decades of having their minds blown then simply hand it off to the next generation. One of these generations are actually going to have to do something about it.

heh, imagine if there had been internet blogs when the federalists stacked the judiciary with adams' midnight judges.
And I think this,
too, may explain "what happened to Bernie??" after the 2016 Cali Primary.
Methinks Deep State likely whispered a little something in Bernie's ear. Something like, "if you drag this to Philly you AND your wife could very well end up looking a lot like Seth Rich. capiche?!"

The MacResistance is denying the deep state exists.
On one hand, the MacResistance praises the leaks, FBI, CIA etc for leaking/spying on Trump, and then on the other hand deny it exists except as some fantasy of progressives.
That's because some of the Deep State members are
funding the McResistance. Sorts apparently has his hands in a lot of cookies. Hard to know what's real or funded.
Damn autocorrect... Soros, not Sorts . I usually catch my writing before I post, but kinda having a bad day.

Yah for sure.
Strange protest of an election where maybe up to 50% did not vote.

Thanks for the meme. Funny.

Just saw this video this morning.
I have been out of town for the last several days visiting family and have not yet caught up on all the essays and comments here. I did notice that some folks were taken back by the smiling by Jimmy Dore and Bill Binney. I cannot hold anything against either of them for anything, particularly Bill Binney who has been tireless in trying to get the word out to the public at large about how dangerous these programs are and how badly they are being abused.
Binney has been making the rounds of any media that will give him a platform. His message has been consistent in that he insists on how unconstitutional these programs are.
What he has done and is still doing is very patriotic and heroic. And he is doing this all despite being in poor health due to diabetes which has cost him both of his legs.
To me, Bill Binney is a hero. Thank you for this essay, Joe.

evening gulfgal...
binney is definitely a hero who has been put through the wringer for telling the truth. the man deserves a good laugh now and then.
Ditto, gulfgal
I took Jimmy's smiling as more shock than laughter. The video was very powerful because even though most of us knew some of this, I had no idea how far down the rabbit hole it went.
Any time I read that cops arrested someone for drugs after a routine traffic stop, I knew that they got information from the DEA. I can't believe that judges don't put a stop to this.
