About that Hillary misspoke" excuse

[cross-posted to Kossacks_for_Sanders]

So I've been seeing a lot of Hillary apologists try and pass off her words supporting Nancy Reagan's "support" for AIDS research as a simple misspeak, that when she said, "The other point that I wanted to make too," she was still talking about Alzheimer's, so everyone needs to chill.

The full quote:

"The other point that I wanted to make too is, it may be hard for your viewers to remember how difficult it was for people to talk about HIV/AIDS back in the 1980s. And because of both President and Mrs. Reagan — in particular Mrs. Reagan — we started a national conversation when before nobody would talk about it, nobody wanted to do anything about it."

Nobody would talk about Alzheimer's? Nobody wanted to do anything about it? Really? What does history say, from the Alzheimer's Association website:

1974 Founding of National Institute on Aging An act of Congress establishes the National Institute on Aging (NIA) as one of our National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIA is our primary federal agency supporting Alzheimer's research.

1976 Alzheimer's recognized as most common form of dementia. Neurologist Robert Katzman identifies Alzheimer's disease as the most common cause of dementia and a major public health challenge in his editorial published in Archives of Neurology.

In 1979, Jerome H. Stone and representatives from several family support groups met with the National Institute on Aging to explore the value of a national, independent, nonprofit organization to complement and stimulate federal efforts on Alzheimer's disease. That meeting resulted in the 1980 formation of the Alzheimer's Association with Mr. Stone as founding president.

1983 Declaration of National Alzheimer's Disease Month Awareness of Alzheimer's disease increases, leading Congress to designate November 1983 as the first National Alzheimer's Disease Month.

Is this a reddit group? Can you post a link to it?

My father died this past summer from Alzheimers. Alzheimers was not kept in the shadows like AIDs was because AIDs was thought to be a gay disease. Our secretary died from AIDs and she was straight.

Hillary Clinton lied and it burns me to no end how her supporters are making excuses for her. This woman has no compassion or sensitivity toward other human beings. She is self serving and arrogant. When Susan Grigsby made an excuse for her on fladem's diary today, it really angered me.

I find it shocking that the front page of this site has totally ignored what has to be one of the most insensitive statements made by a politician ever. And then Clinton tried to cover it up by saying she meant Alzheimer’s, not AIDs, which made zero sense at all in the context of what she said. Every person here, straight or gay, has known at least one person who died from AIDs. For many of those people, it still a devastating memory of how many family, friends, and loved ones died because nothing was being done to help stem the epidemic and find treatments. It was a gay disease and Reagan ignored it because of that. So it was not that Clinton simply misspoke. She knew exactly what she was saying and she was doing that at the expense of many people who are still grieving.

They may be trying to shove this despicable woman down our throats, but I am not having any of that shit sandwich.

My father was 92 when he died and had Alzheimers for nearly twelve years. He was a very kind and accomplished man, so we all have only positive memories. There were no regrets. We were lucky to have a great nursing home for him his last two and a half years so he was well cared for.
