It Seems Really Dumb to Post This, But...
There have been too many people who are shocked/surprised when they actually meet me or talk to me on the phone, and find out I am not a 28-year-old man with olive skin.
The 28-year-old man with olive skin (my avatar) is Mr. Universe from the movie Serenity, just as my handle is a famous (and beloved) quote from that character:
"Can't stop the signal, Mal."
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1tXlpRq-jY]
So that's not who I am. I don't have half the mad digital chops he does, nor am I as good-looking.
And by the way, if you haven't seen that movie yet, OMFG find it on Netflix or Amazon streaming or put it on your Netflix DVD cue or if you still have video stores wherever you are, go out and get it right now, because it's some great science fiction. And while you're at it, rent Firefly and watch it too.
EDIT: No, start off by watching Firefly...and then, AFTERWARDS, watch Serenity. It'll go much better that way.
So who am I?
I am a white woman, 48 years old, Florida native. I'm a (mostly) out-of-work English PhD who occasionally teaches Business Writing at the local community college and is wondering about other kinds of teaching (Montessori teaching, prison education.)
I gave up the possibility of a tenured academic career by running off after Howard Dean and John Kerry to save the country. Dumbest decision of my life. Interests in sustainability, independent media, gaming, fantasy, science fiction, musical theater. Jeez, this is starting to feel like a bio on a dating site!
That's probably enough to be going on with, yeah?
Oh, I was SouthernLiberalinMD on Daily Kos, and a long long time ago, I was Nobby (doubt anybody remembers that).
I am still LiberalinMD on Twitter.
I have decided to trash my avatar, as some have told me it's misleading to have a male avatar when you're female, and as soon as I figure out how to change my account settings, a less misleading image will accompany my, er, dulcet tones.

If I may, I'd suggest that watching Firefly is not a
"while you're at it" element of watching Serenity, it is an absolutely necessary prerequisite for watching Serenity, if for no other reason than it would suck to watch Firefly if you've seen Serenity first.

Is Firefly the western scifi series with Michael Weatherly
Or a different series?
I loved Stranger Things and I think they are going to do another season.
I liked the ones where the kids were communicating with an alien entity and can't believe they cancelled it. Whispers?
They take off the great shows that are unique and replace them with either a scripted reality show or a silly comedy.
Graceland was canceled and Shades of Blue, Stalker and a few others that were different.
There were problems with running a campaign of Joy while committing a genocide? Who could have guessed?

well, it's a "western sci fi" show, but i can find no
evidence that michael weatherly was ever in it, or in any other "western sci fi" show.
the truth is, you need to do some major suspending of the ole disbelief while watching firefly, but it's pretty engaging once you manage that.

Love your avatar. My avatar is my pet goat. What does that say about me?
It's all fun.
Marilyn
"Make dirt, not war." eyo
Marilyn,
Reading that you have a pet goat, then reading your sig, I couldn't help but think of my brother, a couple of orphaned twin kids, and a mean as hell goat-flinging donkey who prompted me to write a Craigslist ad to give the mean ass away before he killed the kids. In the ad, I mentioned that the orphan twins were bottle-fed by my tree-hugging, peace-loving, hippie brother, and that the donkey's aggression had caused him to take up arms and begin shooting the ass in his ass with pellets.
A very knowledgeable Black cowboy close to 70 wrangled the obnoxious ass, and his badass horse pulled the little bugger into the horse trailer. I was in awe, and Quit It and Stop It were finally safe.
Excellent kid names!
My dog responds well to a thunderous "NO"! But good directive kid names. They be all growed up now?
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
The kids grew up, and then came Chupacabra
At least that's what I'm calling the massacre with no blood, and no eating of the dead (coyotes don't do that) of about eight goats. My parents gave away the remaining 10 or so, as well as Beulah, the Jenny. It was sad, and unsettling.
Damn, that's harsh.
Wait, so coyotes kill for the fun of it?
I thought the animals that did that were rather few.

No, coyotes don't thrill kill
They work in packs, and eat what they kill unless scared off. Even then, there will be blood. I'm half jokingly calling it Chupacabra. Half of me says WTF, the other half says, there's no such thing (but still WTF?).
curiously (or not), two notable animal species
that thrill kill are human beings' favorite companion animals: domestic dogs and domestic cats.

I've heard that explained thus:
they never really fully mature while they're living with us, so they continue to play/kill, like kittens and puppies do. It should be a stage in their learning that doesn't persist, but when they live with us, they don't fully mature.
Heard that, don't know if it's true.
I heard that some in the weasel family (Mustelidae or something like that?) kill for pleasure. But they're way too small to kill a goat, obviously.

in the case of dogs, some have been BRED to thrill kill,
such as the terriers used for "ratting" in the UK.
but i knew of a samoyed that slaughtered 2 dozen chickens in about 5 minutes, which i have to say, is a behavior that doesn't really resemble anything i've ever seen a puppy do. samoyeds like to kill small things. i don't know why. maybe because they were bred in an environment where any opportunity to kill a small animal was an opportunity for calories, whether or not the dog was particularly hungry at the moment.

Samoyed (white) + chickens (dead)
must have resulted in red Sammie. One of our Sammies killed a groundhog, not pretty and in a State Park, aiee. Now I have a Cairn terrier, my Vet had a few and one of his males killed a groundhog. Aieee. The pup trainer said that dogs reach adolescence at first kill. Unless my little girls has eaten fist, I think she's still a virgin (spayed) puppy at 7 months. Does have chippy and squirrel hate, and she IS a ratter.

That's a great story!
Yes . . . donkeys are popular in herds in Texas because they will kick the shit out of coyotes!
Marilyn
"Make dirt, not war." eyo
Yes, they will! I think it's great unless, lol
Unless they turn to goat-flinging.
The very skilled cowboy told us his horses would keep the mean ass in line. After seeing the man's horse in action, I had no doubt!
I have seen a lot of donkeys
being used not only with goats and sheep, but also on dairy farms. Coyotes are everywhere now and they are not only killing livestock, but are also displacing a lot of native species of animals. I actually saw a dead coyote (hit by a car) inside the city limits of Tallahassee, only a little over a mile from the Capitol. It was on one of the busiest streets in town in a very residential area. Scary!

yeah, really, that new avatar - please get your old one back
and can you remain a man, please? I feel so betrayed. My mind makes up personalities according to their avatars. That's just how my mind works and it won't change. It's such a pain to face another human being than the one I had in my imagination. Since the day I started reading dailykos I always was angry about the fact that people pretend to be someone they are not. Worst thing about the intertubes, imo.
Well, I admit, I could never figure out what Joe's avatar was saying to my mind. Til today I don't understand that "animal".
ok, I just try to make some noise. For the lack of the culture I don't have and you are raised in and live in. I just realized that I am now scared of you. Sigh. It feels bad to be me here in C99p. I am the only woman who is uncultured, unread and pretty honest. What am I doing here, I ask. If I had a midlife crisis that would be ok, but I am already hobbling towards the seventh decade of my life. Doesn't look that good for the future, does it?

If anybody suggested you were trying to be dishonest, they're not worth your consideration. I'm not an older German with a red nose and a hat - I'm a middle aged++ Dane - totally different...totally. I'm not a plutocrat supporting kool-ade salesman either.
And that is exactly why you might consider your initial avatar - it represents something that matters to you.
My thing is corruption. Chaps my hide. We'll fix nothing as long as corruption permeates our government. Seems we have very similar reasons for choosing our avatars...which is one of those things - like picking our own IRL names should we decide, or getting a tattoo - that, as of yet, majority-aged humans can do.
Compensated Spokes Model for Big Poor.
Yeah, you're right.
And I'm totally with you about corruption.
A party which was only about corruption, if it had the right resources, could command a solid 60% of the vote in this country.
Of course, if the press and the electoral system is based on fraud and lies, that 60% could be completely ignored, but--just a thought.

I agree with "not dishonest"
This is not a dating site. There is no reasonable expectation that someone would "hook up" here. So your gender is completely irrelevant to any context which does happen here.
Then again, I tend to be pretty loose with my own gender identity and I tend to not care about others. I'm "me". You're "you". That pretty much works for everything that isn't an intimate relationship.
A lot of wanderers in the U.S. political desert recognize that all the duopoly has to offer is a choice of mirages. Come, let us trudge towards empty expanse of sand #1, littered with the bleached bones of Deaniacs and Hope and Changers.

Luckily, there's no competition here between women, as I believe there was in earlier times, mimi, which is something I wonder might be a cause of your unease? so we can just relax and be girls together, so to speak. Although this pajama B-Day party would be a lot more fun with more guys here, lol.
But the only reason we need for being here is whatever reason we're here, generally to learn about and discuss the political situation and potential solutions/alleviation/speculations with people having similar humanistic outlooks and wanting democracy and a fair, sustainable society. And vent/swear a lot, of course, lol.
And you do not in the least little bit seem uncultured or unread!
I find being actually uncultured, as I am, rather fun, myself. Started feeling that way in my distant youth, when Mother developed some weird fantasy from her youth about my one day marrying money and becoming a 'gracious society hostess', of all things, causing an immediate reaction toward my losing my manners; never got over it. And no-one can make me, lol.
(Not like this below, but its a good tune that sprang to mind. And it's 3 AM so I'm overtired, silly and rambly. And my room-mate's dog who, after a stream of emergencies, she could not afford to spay this summer, just had two healthy and very active pups she was also too young to have, without problems and is a good mum to the pups, both of which can be homed within her family, so giddy with relief as well.)

Lol, thinking of Helena, I would have assumed you were female, looking at your name, had I thought about it.
But personally, I find that one of the nice things about the internet is that we can address each other as people, without knowing/thinking of their age, gender or any of the things we often use to unconsciously compartmentalize each other into categories/stereotypes. Just people, talking together.
Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

Ellen, I agree and disagree.
We can "address each other as people, without knowing/thinking of their age, gender or any of the things we often use to unconsciously compartmentalize each other into categories/stereotypes,"-- if we don't supply that information.
And even then, as evidenced by the assumptions about Can't Stop The Signal, due to SCTS's avatar-- we make assumptions.
I agree that this is a format in which we can, quite possibly, for the first time in world history, begin to speak to-- and perhaps more importantly, listen to-- each other, in a way that we are not burdened w/ and by the stigma of social hierarchy. That is why I find the concept of avatars and monikers as somehow being "misleading," not only ridiculous, but a reflection of how our society, as you say, tries to compartmentalize everyone. I agree with you in that the possibility is here, before us, but doubt our ability to accept the presented self-perceptions as more real than the biological ones. I keep hoping I'm wrong.

Also played Bernard in The Santa Clause movies.
I think any cop/murder show in the last few decades has a noticeable right wing flavor. Numbers mostly did, yet one story arc had Charlie's colleague renditioned for sending a paper to Iraq, I think, for crop increases reducing hunger. Charlie then sent the paper to scientist around the world in protest and the NSA/FBI revoked his clearance for several episodes.

I like the new avatar
... and wondered why you were a young dude before, since I knew you were a woman. The English PhD is new information, but hardly a surprise. I've been reading you for some years now, after all.
I can't even figure out how to post an avatar, for that matter, so I guess my incompetence at that simple task is my appropriate image.

JtC told me how:
click on "my account" and there will be a list of commands across the top of the page; pick "Edit" and scroll down and you'll see where to upload a picture, if you want to. It has to be a picture you've got on your hard drive (I think).

Hold on!
I imagine that you would never be incompetent, DD. Just uninformed as to how to upload an avatar.

Well, whoever you are, CSTS, you rock!
Thanks for the movie/tv show ideas! Many people have recommended Firefly, but I've never heard of Serenity. And now they're both on the Netflix list. And, fwiw, I like the old avatar, too, maybe because it's familiar and I felt like I knew that guy. But either way, it's good to meet you!

You found it on Netflix? I didn't :(
I'll check again, but I did a Roku search and only came up with a couple channels that want $2.99 to watch each of them. Netflix should have come up in the search, but I'll try Netflix proper.
OK, it's supposed to be on Netflix...
OK, no, they've apparently taken it off of their streaming list...Netflix's streaming works a little like TJ Maxx--they circulate different items out and in. Apparently Firefly is currently out.
But if you have a Netflix account, and a means to play DVDs--a DVD player, an X-Box, or even a computer w/an optical drive, you can put Firefly on your DVD list, and they will mail it to you oldstyle.

my roku
shows it streaming on Netflix. Also on Hulu, Crackle, and Amazon Prime.
I'm trying another Roku search now
I'm getting irritated watching this Stephanopoulos show telling me Putin is going to steal the election. Um, no, it's the Hillary campaign. Oh and he's dumping fake hacked emails. Gag!
Edit: good lord, they're both there. Hey, it was Fri night when I did the search. That's all I'm saying.
Shiny!

Actually, Firefly is, but not Serenity
Roku search didn't bring up a free version of either (it did find the fairy ones), but a Netflix search found Firefly which is now on my list. However, when I search Netflix for Serenity, the only result that pops up is Firefly lol.
serenity
is there as the first Firefly episode on Netflix.
Thanks, hecate n/t
except
I just looked into it further, and that "Serenity" is apparently an unaired pilot, that is different from the movie Serenity.
Everything is always so wrong and confusing. ; (

I have never cared for anonymity.
My encounters over the past couple of years have reenforced my distrust for same. I tend to question the veracity and sincerity of anonymous writers on online fora.

Are Firefly and Serenity done? We don't like to rent series that are still airing.

They ended years ago.
Sadly, Firefly was canceled after only a dozen episodes; it's a classic tale of network executives fucking up royally. It took a few years of fan agitation and evangelizing to get Serenity made -- they were actually trying to get the series renewed by another network (ANY other network), but instead universal gave whedon a movie deal. there's even a movie (documentary) about the whole affair.

Cool! I don't think I've ever (sorta) met anyone who does that for a living before.

I LOVE what I do
and I could bore you to tears talking about it.
One of the advantages is getting a free art education (to a certain degree).

Probably not, although I know
Probably not, although I know nothing of the subject myself. My mother, who was a lively and accurate sketcher, used to paint for fun and took art classes - among a multitude of other subjects - variously at a university and a then-local college once we were a little older. I thought she was pretty good, but what do I know, lol?
I started getting into her psychology texts around, I think, 11, rapidly reaching a conclusion that way too many people were at the time trying to make their favorite theories one-size-fits-all and that the authors were revealing a lot about themselves by their tactics in trying to make this work. That and a bunch of other things kept me amused and I'm unfortunately not artistic myself, so pretty much just admired her paintings from time to time.
