Disability Caucus 9/9/2016: When Voc Rehab Can't Place You....

As I've said many times before, I've been in and out of Voc Rehab for well over a decade. Fifteen years, actually. And I've spent those years, close to half my life, trying to get out of a rut many of us disabled folks often fall into. But this month, I finally decided to say screw it....well, not entirely, but at least when it comes to looking for full time work or 'gainful employment'. This isn't their fault anymore than it is mine. It's just what is and perhaps I was too stubborn or stupid to let it go.

The reason I gave up? Well, as gjohnsit and many others pointed out, employers have no desire to fill positions. This became more and more obvious to me with each passing year after I graduated college in 2012 with degrees in graphic design and database administration.

My decision came after spending nearly 6 months filling out applications as part of SNAP requirements. I had submitted over 200 applications in that period, and only got one interview. One. Interview. And that interview was stopped immediately because the employer wanted someone with a drivers' license. Otherwise, this was only temporary as they were running the position from July to November, or peak election season.

So now, I'm going to be filing for SSI, but not before I get my hands on some childhood SSI payment records and the records documenting the switch from SSI to Survivors Benefits. I set up an appointment to pick those up a month from now and the person I spoke with made a note of what to get for me so that's a plus. I've also got several people willing to write letters on my behalf. Legal representation is...tricky. I don't know who I should seek out in that respect but the Administration person I spoke with said it was a good idea.

Maybe if I'm able to get the SSI I should have had to begin with up to now, I won't feel so damned stressed all the time. And if I can, I'll just use my skills to make a little extra on the side.

See ya around,

Aspie

There are attorneys who specialize in dealing with SSA or have it as one of their practice focuses. Maybe the Bar Asscociation in your area can give you some names if you have no way of getting a word of mouth referral.

Same with any type of public assistance. The number of flaming hoops and the Ts to be crossed, Is to be dotted. Miss one because it wasn't easy to understand? DENIED!

I swear they do it that way so people get so fed up, they simply give up. Tax money used to pay salaries and benefits for the employees positioned to hold the flaming hoops.

And keep us updated, will you? I'm very interested in what you think of the process, and what, indeed, you have to go thru to get it.

That was from 2002 when I turned 18 to 2007. I went through it all. Lawyer, hearing, letters to congressmen and senators, you name it. Nothing worked. I could write pages and pages on that alone, including the switch from childhood SSI to Survivors right before my dad died. Hell, it was that switch that led to this mess to begin with.

lawyer unless you are denied. It's much easier to qualify for SSI than it is for SSDI.
All I needed was a letter from my doctor describing my health issues and how they affected my ability to work.
I wish I had known how easy it was to get SSI because the lawyer got a chunk of the back pay.
I have some other advice if you want it. Message me if you do.

Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

boost my meagre pension a fair bit. Canada is pro-active with its veterans and our VA does work for us. But if it wasn't for my spouse interfacing with the bureaucracy, we'd be in real trouble. I think your bureaucracies are more impenetrable and I wish you all the very best in getting them to respond to your situation. Hang in there,

Good luck, it took a blood clot to get them to relent and give me mine. They seem to prefer waiting till you die or have a life threatening situation to give you any payments. I had the lawyers, I had a laundry list of health issues that they were fighting me on, yet it was the DVT in my left arm that finally got them to stop fighting and hand it over. It may be different for those with "Mental disabilities" as they class Aspergers and other such issues into. So again good luck with the fight with Social Security, but once they sign you up, they stick with it, and you get it monthly. Poverty level pay, but still, better than nothing at all.
