Transgender athletes

Even people who otherwise support transgender equality often draw the line at transgender women competing against cisgender women. We have a couple of new opinions expressed lately. What makes these more unusual than most is that they are grounded in science.

Steven Petrow investigates at Washington Post.

This charged debate is timely because of a landmark rule change instituted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) this year. In Rio, transgender men (female-to-male athletes) will be allowed to compete without any restrictions (based on the sexist assumption, I suppose, that trans men could never dominate their sports). Trans women, meanwhile, are no longer required to undergo gender-reassignment surgery to compete in female divisions, and the previously mandated two-year wait after transitioning has been jettisoned.

Meanwhile IOC scientist Yannis Pitsalidis discusses the science at New Scientist.

The new guidance requires testosterone levels in trans women’s blood to be below a threshold for a year before competition. This would usually require hormone treatment or even surgery. What impact does this treatment have?

There is some research that helps. A 2004 study measured levels of testosterone and haemoglobin – related to the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood – in trans women within a year of surgery and reported levels of both in the female range, along with a reduction in muscle mass.

The only study to directly assess performance was published last year. It looked at race times in eight non-elite trans women runners who had competed in both men’s and women’s distance races. It found they had no advantage over other women.

--Pitsalidis

One competitive cisgender female runner, who did not want her name used, explained how “incredibly unfair” this is to her, attributing the rule change to the IOC’s “trying to be politically correct.” Another cisgender female athlete, former Olympic judo competitor Ronda Rousey, went further (and got graphic) when she complained to the media about her competitor Fallon Fox, a trans woman, claiming: “She can try hormones, chop her pecker off, but it’s still the same bone structure a man has. It’s an advantage. I don’t think it’s fair.”

But here’s why we all had it wrong: The first-ever study of transgender athletes showed that the hormone therapy that facilitates male-to-female transition does more than just suppress testosterone. Published last year in the Journal of Sporting Cultures and Identities, the study showed that as testosterone levels approach female norms, trans women experience a decrease in muscle mass, bone density and other physical characteristics.

--Petrow

Together these changes lead to a loss of speed, strength and endurance — all key components of athleticism.

It’s not the anatomy that matters, it’s the hormones.

--Joanna Harper, author of the study

Every athlete, whether cisgender or transgender, has advantages and disadvantages.

--Cyd Ziegler, Outsports

People come in all shapes and sizes. We don’t disqualify Michael Phelps for having super long arms; that’s just a competitive advantage he has in his sport. We don’t regulate height in the WNBA or NBA; being tall is just an advantage for a center. For as long as sports have been around, there have been people who have had advantages over others. A universal level playing field does not exist.

--Chris Mosier, dualthlete

Still, the controversy and trans-shaming continue. Although there are well over 40 openly gay and lesbian athletes competing in the Summer Games, neither of the two reported trans athletes have come out publicly. Until anti-trans stigma is fully erased, they are eligible to compete, but, Mosier said, that doesn’t mean “everybody is ready to accept us.” Now I ask you: Is that fair?

Life is strong. I'm weak, but Life is strong.

...for the transgender woman. Rather perverse view of us.

Not all of you. Just the ones willing to get in the ring with Ronda Rousey.

issue.

I hadn't considered it before, but after watching an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast (Joe is pretty damn strong supporter of LGBT rights) he had a doctor that specializes in a relevant field of medicine (I don't recall the exact field at the moment) but he recounted a story about a Trans woman that (without disclosure) entered into mixed martial arts competitions and proceeded to severely beat her opponent.

The Doctor made many physiological cases against letting Trans women compete against biological women, such as difference in muscle and bone density, difference in numbers of and connectivity points of ligaments and tendons between bio males and females, hand size and number of tendons and connectivity points there as well, etc.

These are differences that don't change with hormone or reassignment surgery, they are physically innate to the structure of the biologically male body.

I have been called out on this before by people, but I feel the facts don't lie and while I totally support all peoples rights, the fact remains that in areas such as sports, particularly combat sports, those born with a biologically male body have a significant advantage over those born biologically female.

I wouldn't be as concerned about a Trans person who went from female to male , simply because rather than going into the fight with a purely physical advantage they actually have a disadvantage, but one that can be overcome by skill, something the opponent just cannot do in the other case. I would however be concerned with her safety, because again the male bone structure of the jaw and skull, the potential for greater injury due to the opponent having a significant physical advantage.

It's one of the reasons we have weight classes in combat sports, could you imagine putting a featherweight fighter in a ring with someone like Tyson in his prime?

We don't do that because they are just not physically in the same class and it would be dangerous and unfair to do so, not because we have a problem with short or lean people...

But that's just my opinion, and I feel I didn't reach it in a spurious manner so I hope that those that disagree will keep in mind that it was formed without ill intent and attack the merits of the argument rather than the messenger as I know this is a sensitive topic.

almost unwatchable now. Give 'em another 10 years and no one will watch, the medals almost meaningless. Poor kids going thru grade school today have to ask, "mommy, am I a cis or a tran," mommy having no clue what her 3rd grader even asking? The times they are a changing, and they're changing a little too fast for some of us geezers just getting used to the idea of gay marriage, but... if a "she" still has "her" danglers attached, I would say that that "tran" should compete with the "cis" men. But, hey, who even watches anymore? Carry on. I feel for that 3rd grader entering a new world where one has to ask before asking out a 10th grader, "are you cis or trans?" Brave new world indeed. How do kids even get thru school these days?

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --

at the extreme end of the distribution -- e.g., elite athletes -- by analyzing the properties of individuals in the middle of the distribution -- e.g., non-elite athletes -- is scientific malpractice.

There are biological differences between men and women. Trans people have the BRAIN of a gender that doesn't otherwise match their body. But sports revolve around the body. A biologically male body has various advantages over a female one in most sports. Long distance swimming is a rare exception. If you haven't had hormone therapy a male to female trans person has a testosterone advantage. Even if you have had it there are structural elements that don't change.

At the highest levels of athletics men are superior. This is different from something like the marines or navy seals where a woman at the highest genetic level could pass the same tests as a man and therefore qualify.

If you want to make an argument for male to female trans people competing as women why do we even have gender divisions? One of your quotes even goes there about height or MP's arm length. Why not just have everyone compete in the same league since individual variance exists?

Caitlyn Jenner has personal records that are a above the world record for women of all time. Would it have been fair for her to race against cis gendered women when she was in her prime? No. Its not even close.

The world record in the 100 yard dash, en-route to 100 meters, for women is BARELY passed the world records from over 140 years ago. That is not a level playing field.
