Anyone who's ever run a website or server knows you're not going to have consistent ISP, server, upstream connectivity 24/7/365.
More to the point, though, it's usually a thankless job. It takes your time, energy, money. It means sacrificing family time and sleep.
What Johnny has given to all of us is an online community that we basically did nothing to earn. I'm happy to contribute to the fundraiser.
p.s. Shirley, nobody asked you to be gracious. At the same time, I don't think anyone asked you to throw a selfish pity party because you were temporarily inconvenienced.

You got that right. When a Complainer ain't Complaining, she ain't happy.
People don't understand how web servers work anyway. When you do a live blog of an unfolding event, you get 100 people hitting the refresh button every 20 seconds. That bogs down the server -- simple math. But wah-wah, it's taking time to reload the page, oh boo hoo sob, cry me a river. Hahahha.

I've seen them ruin the content of many sites. As the site manager becomes more dependent on the advertiser the advertiser then gets more influence on the site content. The site manager becomes more focused on keeping the advertiser satisfied and less focused on making the community happy.
The web community I develop for has refused to add advertisements and it's one of the most successful sites of it's kind for the past 20 years.

I usually keep at least 5 different essays open on separate tabs and use 1 tab to navigate the site, jumping from one story to the next. When the pages are slow to load, I'll start reading the essays that I've kept on reserve on the other tabs.
Hope this helps.

"Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realize we cannot eat money." --Nineteenth century Nēhilawē (Cree) proverb
Different browsers work better with different sites as well, Firefox works best for me but there may be a better option. It might help to try a few browsers and see what works for you.
In any case, a little bit of housekeeping once a week will make your computer faster and safer.
Delete cookies and .tmp files
Free CC Cleaner will do the above, find and delete "junk" files. The first time you do this, I bet you'll be surprised by all the crap your computer accumulates.
Free defrag and optimize files on your hard drive with AusLogics.
All of this will take maybe 10 minutes. Do it once a week and you'll be glad you did it. Your system will run faster and safer. The software is all free but I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I've bought bigger name brand software that isn't 10% as good as the freeware.
Disclosure: I set up EHR/EMR interfaces for hospitals and doctors offices as a moonlight. I want my encryption and servers to be fast and stealth and PRABOB, they know that.
I am already running two (long story). I will report back when this has been done.

Let me add my thanks for your efforts. I really do appreciate it. Wish we could afford to pay you what you're worth, but that is priceless. So just let me say thank you again.
I've had slow loading time at other sites due to the advertising, but I've not experienced it here. Sometimes it's one's internet provider, rather than the website. I appreciate the work the site managers do and the fact that there are no advertisements popping up everywhere.
I am not on 24/7, but I have not had a problem with this site loading when I am on. Maybe an occasional hiccup, but definitely not anything like the author has cited.
Edited after learning that there was a problem when I was not on.

server not responding, several times yesterday, according to IsItDown, including for 1-1/2 hours after this post went up last night. Creaking slowly along between down times. Since the rest of the net that I visit was fine, I personally wondered about a DDOS attack or some such.
I dunno. I'm only techy enough to get myself in trouble trying to discuss such things.
Maybe JtC can enlighten us about site performance etc., and possible reasons.
received a quick response that I don't think they'd mind me sharing.
There was extremely heavy traffic yesterday, lots of people interested in WikiLeaks and the convention. Hooray! If that continues, I'm sure we'll get more capacity. If not, the site will get faster because traffic will calm down.
Right now, it's nice and speedy!
I think these are just normal growing pains. When the site is slow, if it's too slow I do something else for a while. There's no need to leave forever.

it has to do with lack of money to buy more broadband and I always think it's lovely how people take all of the "fast access" users get for free on the sites, they want to talk their hearts out, for granted without paying something for it.

I strongly suspect there were some denial of service attacks going on last night in addition to higher traffic due to the convention.
