I've enjoyed the time I've spent here, but I don't have the time to wait almost five minutes for every page to load.
I appreciate all the work Johnny and Joe have spent on making this a great site. Best of luck to you. I mean that seriously.
Thank you, anyway.
Johnny and Joe put their heart, sweat, blood, and tears into this fucking website, and they do it for us! I'll wait a little longer for the goddamned pages to load and suck it up rather than go someplace that I might regret later.
I'm coming to really love this community. I'm sorry you can't wait those five minutes for the pages to load -- they're doing the best they can, ffs.
It would be nice if we could turn this diary into a fundraiser for the siterunners ...
I miss Colorado.
sometimes I wonder why I do it, thanks for reminding me why it's worth it.
load anywhere then I think it is safe to say that you have 'other issues.' eom
A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.
Could that be it?

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
for everything you do for keeping this site running. Whenever it's down I know that you are working on getting it back up and I'm grateful for everything you and others do for us and for creating it in the first place.
Your work is very worth it.
I really hadn’t anticipated the Senator from MBNA being this bad. I thought we had dodged the bullet with Hillary.

JtC and Joe have put everything into this place and I am eternally great-full. The cess-pool that the other place turned into wasn't habitable and this life boat has become a home.
Anyone who's ever run a website or server knows you're not going to have consistent ISP, server, upstream connectivity 24/7/365.
More to the point, though, it's usually a thankless job. It takes your time, energy, money. It means sacrificing family time and sleep.
What Johnny has given to all of us is an online community that we basically did nothing to earn. I'm happy to contribute to the fundraiser.
p.s. Shirley, nobody asked you to be gracious. At the same time, I don't think anyone asked you to throw a selfish pity party because you were temporarily inconvenienced.

Oh, good, I'm not alone. Either under attack, or a provider slowing it down.
Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.
A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.
That's my first thoughts.
had not occurred to me, but now that you mention it . . .
on the other hand, Russians or possibly Lamont might be hacking the place.
This site is starting to getting noticed in the media.

and completely uncalled for. How much have you contributed to making this place happen? Do you think they have the budget to run multiple bundled T1 lines?
"I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones."
No one buys data service by the T1 line anymore. A T1 line is only 1.544 Mbps.

You got that right. When a Complainer ain't Complaining, she ain't happy.
People don't understand how web servers work anyway. When you do a live blog of an unfolding event, you get 100 people hitting the refresh button every 20 seconds. That bogs down the server -- simple math. But wah-wah, it's taking time to reload the page, oh boo hoo sob, cry me a river. Hahahha.

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?
If we need to charge memberships or put in ads to provide a minimally acceptable level of access, I am in. What good is such an awesome place if you can't get in or go anyplace if you do get in.

I've seen them ruin the content of many sites. As the site manager becomes more dependent on the advertiser the advertiser then gets more influence on the site content. The site manager becomes more focused on keeping the advertiser satisfied and less focused on making the community happy.
The web community I develop for has refused to add advertisements and it's one of the most successful sites of it's kind for the past 20 years.
to those who wait.
I usually keep at least 5 different essays open on separate tabs and use 1 tab to navigate the site, jumping from one story to the next. When the pages are slow to load, I'll start reading the essays that I've kept on reserve on the other tabs.
Hope this helps.

Different browsers work better with different sites as well, Firefox works best for me but there may be a better option. It might help to try a few browsers and see what works for you.
In any case, a little bit of housekeeping once a week will make your computer faster and safer.
All of this will take maybe 10 minutes. Do it once a week and you'll be glad you did it. Your system will run faster and safer. The software is all free but I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I've bought bigger name brand software that isn't 10% as good as the freeware.
Disclosure: I set up EHR/EMR interfaces for hospitals and doctors offices as a moonlight. I want my encryption and servers to be fast and stealth and PRABOB, they know that.
I am already running two (long story). I will report back when this has been done.
that more $ (for a dedicated server?) might help or is it just life on the net?
Let me add my thanks for your efforts. I really do appreciate it. Wish we could afford to pay you what you're worth, but that is priceless. So just let me say thank you again.
I can at least thank you guys. You are doing us and the left admirable service. My gratitude to you.

I've had slow loading time at other sites due to the advertising, but I've not experienced it here. Sometimes it's one's internet provider, rather than the website. I appreciate the work the site managers do and the fact that there are no advertisements popping up everywhere.
I am not on 24/7, but I have not had a problem with this site loading when I am on. Maybe an occasional hiccup, but definitely not anything like the author has cited.
Edited after learning that there was a problem when I was not on.

server not responding, several times yesterday, according to IsItDown, including for 1-1/2 hours after this post went up last night. Creaking slowly along between down times. Since the rest of the net that I visit was fine, I personally wondered about a DDOS attack or some such.
I dunno. I'm only techy enough to get myself in trouble trying to discuss such things.
Maybe JtC can enlighten us about site performance etc., and possible reasons.
I will edit my own post which was rude in itself. I am rarely on at night. Yes, I had some hiccups during the day, but nothing like what I read here.
received a quick response that I don't think they'd mind me sharing.
There was extremely heavy traffic yesterday, lots of people interested in WikiLeaks and the convention. Hooray! If that continues, I'm sure we'll get more capacity. If not, the site will get faster because traffic will calm down.
Right now, it's nice and speedy!
I think these are just normal growing pains. When the site is slow, if it's too slow I do something else for a while. There's no need to leave forever.

it has to do with lack of money to buy more broadband and I always think it's lovely how people take all of the "fast access" users get for free on the sites, they want to talk their hearts out, for granted without paying something for it.
It's like wanting all the social services your government will give you and not wanting to pay taxes for it.
May be I get it wrong, but JtC could correct me, if there are other reasons.

Once in a while I have an occasional problem with slow-loading pages on all websites. Being old-school, the first thing I do is logout and close the affected site completely and come back in a few minutes.
On this site, that works 99% of the time!
Please also allow me to add my voice to those others of us who thank you for your daily efforts in keeping c99p on the air for all of us!

Things were really slow last night. FYI both this site and jackpineradicals.com (which is where bernie people from democratic underground went) were getting hammered at the same time. They'd go down together, go slow together, and come back up together. I strongly suspect there were some denial of service attacks going on last night in addition to higher traffic due to the convention.
went down for a bit...
My reaction was not one of impatience or disgust.
I was immediately worried, thinking of JtC working his ass off for us, wondering what I could do to help!
Of course, that's just how I roll.

it's pretty easy to imagine that during that time period of the live coverage of the convention, the network was overloaded and the broadband link you had needed to be shared with too many others. I am always amazed how some people automatically blame their administrator for things he can't control.
I wished we had another "business" model for this site. I have had it with "exploiting" volunteer work, as honorable it may be, it's not right to take your time and nerves for free in my books. But you know that I said that before.
surely you aren't serious that you'll surely leave because of a lousy 5 minutes? For sure Shirley I understand your frustrations and here's a tip that's sure to work for you Shirley. Shirley, if you're hearing this when you turn on your computer, you may want to upgrade your service because surely this is your problem Shirley.
If not, well, we sure hate to see you leave Shirley. But I'm sure you'll find another home out there in the vast wasteland of the intertubes. Remember Shirley, do not talk to strangers on your quest. Brush your teeth and say your prayers before you go to bed.
Thanks for your hospitality. Dinner was great but I'm tired of waiting around for dessert. Later.

and glad to be here. And although I'm not pleased with the state of the world, I feel at peace in this piece of the world where I live.
I would suggest donating a little money every time you're frustrated about loading time.
Thanks JtC for all the work it takes to keep c99 going!

I just made another small donation to the site. Thank you for all of the hard work in providing your rowdy guests a home. It's greatly appreciated!
Edited to change a questionable grammatical decision.
You have no idea, well how would you, how many times that movie quote is said in this house.
It's weird, isn't it? If I don't enjoy a website, I just don't visit it again. I don't write them to tell them I won't be back.
it's all about "attention".
