Photography Assignment - Local
Local
Anything close to home. Try to notice ordinary things in the environment that could potentially make for a good photograph. Of course the photograph doesn't have to be taken specifically for this assignment.
Any treatment is fine - natural colors, black and white, heavily edited or straight out of the camera. It's all good.
Being a photographer is not about having a great camera, being an expert at post processing, a massive client list, or lucrative book deals. It is about seeing. In our normal lives we don't tend to see stuff - we notice stuff then move on. Photographers and other visual artists don't do that. We look really hard at stuff.
(from this weeks photography open thread -link below)
Of course any photographs can be posted here - they don't have to relate to the assignment.
These assignments are posted in conjunction with Friday Night Photography Open Thread.

I like these two photos very much
especially the meters (or whatever they are) in front of the brick wall. They have a lot of character, and I love the colouring in the photo.
Doesn't any more local than this:
While not a photo really, it does include "photo" in Photoshop. I've always wanted to "paint" this picture but had to wait until I had PS again and understood how to use it.

Intersting pic
How did you do it?
As for understanding how to use Photoshop - I am still working on that

Black background. Then
airbrush set to Opacity 50%, and Flow set to 40%, in red, green, and yellow. Try closing your eyes and see if you don't get a similar effect. It should sparkle or oscillate, or glow, but I know how to make animated .gifs.
The problem, if you will, was puzzling me for a long time. (I think when people close their eyes in movies it shouldn't be black.)
I'm no expert at PS either but constant use gives a bit more proficiency with time.

Before & After
Start with an image & create a scene.

Now you, my man, are an Artist!
Not even sure where I'd begin on a scene like that.
Beautiful!

Start Small
A shot of a banana & one of my eel.
Mix it up with Apeel.
Slice a tomato (I didn`t have one) or a Fig & slice-em-up
This Surf Van is really just a few inches long.
Take some pictures of your eyes & insert them in a shot of a Bronze Monkey.
And use your imagination.
BTW, I`m self taught in PS.
Once you figure out one thing it leads to bigger & better things.

Cool
Don't know about others but if there is any light at all I see orange when I close my eyes -a always assumed it was the blood vessels. When there is no light my mind just presents me with a slide show - pretty cool usually.

It's practice I think - also know that there is a lot of room for improvement

I think that is called practicing life.
Doctors practice medicine, nurses practice healing, architects practice building with the assistance of engineers. My mother is 96, death looms. She gave up curiosity. I have that still, and an iPhone is portable and bad pix can be deleted. Digital renderings have made things easier.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Curiosity is always key

From a couple of years ago ... we a had a very gloppy snowfall that winter.
Cool photo
That looks like the Lake Effect stuff that we get here. The snow that comes from the prevailing winds is much drier (and much easier to shovel!)

Local graffiti
There is an old metal bridge near us, every few years they paint it some ghastly gray or institutional green to cover the colorful graffiti. This morning on our walk we saw the paint peeling off, per usual but someone had painted a lovely dove in one of the chipped openings. Made me hopeful for some reason.

I love to see street art like that.
Thanks
I love it as well, many really good street artists in my area. Inspiring stuff.
And if I could figure out how to delete dbl post...sigh
Sorry
I don't think its possible to delete
I just edit everything out including subject then it just says 'no subject' and everyone knows it was posted in error

Hi Vida
Agree - I much prefer good graffiti to a slopped on layer of whatever paint people seem to use to cover it up. That dove really looks lie it belongs - wonderful photo

Christmas Dinner
I made this table to celebrate Christmas dinner on my back deck, but with more in mind.
In the afternoon, I positioned a camera on a tripod & took a shot of the set table.
We then had a great dinner & at sunset took another image.
I superimposed one over the other & erased the lower part of the sunset image.

I love how you included the signage. It gives your shot more of a personal tie.
I`m already against the next war
Thanks Knucklehead
I was trying to get the the sign in, without most of the surrounding housing, to give it a bit more atmosphere.
It's just a little branch line that gets 2-3 trains a week........ which move very slowly, given the state of the rails.

went straight to the sign - makes the photo imo

I love to explore houses under construction,
not so much the developing structure, as the materials used. And only yesterday, because of this assignment, did I make an obvious (to myself) connection as to why. One of my most memorable experiences as a seven year old child, was sneaking on weekends with my best friend, into houses that were being built in a new suburb that was originally farm land. We collected discarded materials, like little tiles and off-cuts of wood to build our own constructions. They were beautiful to us.
This photo is from my neighbours house, presently under construction. Unfortunately I will miss the most exciting part of the process, as I will be away soon, overseas … the part where the variety of materials begin to include more than only wood.
These two are from a house under construction I also snuck in to 10 years ago.
Nice!!
Especially No. 3.

My favourite too.
Agree with bollox
love number 3.
4 houses are currently being built on the two lots next to us - I'll post some photos when I get to my main computer.
On a different note I really enjoy photographing old abandoned places - can be a little risky but some of the images more than make up for that.

We live in the bungalow
just past the 4 units being built (the trees are in our garden). Its been fun watching these go up and I've sneaked in a couple of times to grab some pics.

One dreary winter afternoon
I spied a rainbow outside the window. Cliché, right? Except for one thing...
It's on the ground! It stayed awhile, while I changed lenses:
This is my neighborhood. There are houses up there, a few. I bet they didn't know they were in the middle of a magical event

Beautiful.
I`ve never seen a rainbow such as yours.
Here`s my house under the same protection.

Wow, yellopig
I can imagine how your eyes must have been startled and your breath taken away. Thank you for sharing that image.
I've had two exceptional rainbow experiences that took my breath away. One was up in the mountains where I lived on Kauai. I was looking down into a vast, steep valley filled with pure white mist and the sun was behind me. As I was watching the 'nothingness' a perfectly circular rainbow appeared in the middle ... and then a shadow of a person in the centre of it. It was me, boy was I blown away. Someday I'll have the slide scanned into a digital image.
The other was sitting at the beginning of night on a volcanic beach on the big island. I saw something I'd never dreamed of, a moon bow over the ocean.
A moon-bow!
Sounds incredible — I'd really love to see that!
And yes, bring that other rainbow picture to show us too
“We may not be able to change the system, but we can make the system irrelevant in our lives and in the lives of those around us.”—John Beckett
I'd like to, sooner or later
It means finding the patience to go through hundreds of slides, but I will at some point. I don't remember if I photographed the moonbow, but I guess I'll find out as I look through my past in the form of slides.
I was treated to such a rainbow once
appearing to lie at the end of a street, across the base of a mountain.
Didn't have a camera to capture it.
Enjoyed it while it lasted.

Very Pretty
My s/o is currently outside trying to make sense of ours at the moment. We have a good division of labor - she designs, plants, weeds and points to where holes need digging. I dig holes, hardscape where I'm told to, and mow. This arrangement keeps us both happy as I really detest weeding and enjoy the brainless stuff.
She was a landscape designer in a previous life so this stuff is second nature to her.
I'll take a couple of shots later today - I have to mow the lawn first though as it has gone haywire over the last couple of days.

howdy steve...
well, i'm nowhere near where local is usually for me. but i went out this afternoon to the butterfly house in sioux falls, south dakota and shot some pictures:
have a good weekend, everybody!
Those are truly amazing photos
The mostly b&w butterfly, fluttering is stunning, and magic. Is it really possible to keep one half of your body still while the other is in nonstop motion? And the last butterfly, so perfectly still, and displaying the most beautiful arrangement of colour and pattern.
Keep enjoying yourselves and all the beautiful things you encounter.
morning janis...
some butterflies have two wings, others have four. the mostly black and white butterfly has four. i may be totally out of my tree, but what i have observed is that the top wings do most of the beating and the lower pair does the steering. anyway, sometimes the upper wings are all frenzied motion, while the lower wings and trunk are stable. they are quite amazing little animals to watch., i've always been fascinated by them.
Hey Joe
These are wonderful - great colors. The one with the orange is my favorite.
Hope that you are having a fun and relaxing break

Shhh! Don't let Pixie know I have a picture of a dog.
