Photography Assignment - Local

saphotography (1 of 1)-10_2.jpg

Local

Anything close to home. Try to notice ordinary things in the environment that could potentially make for a good photograph. Of course the photograph doesn't have to be taken specifically for this assignment.

Any treatment is fine - natural colors, black and white, heavily edited or straight out of the camera. It's all good.

Being a photographer is not about having a great camera, being an expert at post processing, a massive client list, or lucrative book deals. It is about seeing. In our normal lives we don't tend to see stuff - we notice stuff then move on. Photographers and other visual artists don't do that. We look really hard at stuff.

(from this weeks photography open thread -link below)

Of course any photographs can be posted here - they don't have to relate to the assignment.

These assignments are posted in conjunction with Friday Night Photography Open Thread.

especially the meters (or whatever they are) in front of the brick wall. They have a lot of character, and I love the colouring in the photo.

While not a photo really, it does include "photo" in Photoshop. I've always wanted to "paint" this picture but had to wait until I had PS again and understood how to use it.

airbrush set to Opacity 50%, and Flow set to 40%, in red, green, and yellow. Try closing your eyes and see if you don't get a similar effect. It should sparkle or oscillate, or glow, but I know how to make animated .gifs.

The problem, if you will, was puzzling me for a long time. (I think when people close their eyes in movies it shouldn't be black.)

I'm no expert at PS either but constant use gives a bit more proficiency with time.

Don't know about others but if there is any light at all I see orange when I close my eyes -a always assumed it was the blood vessels. When there is no light my mind just presents me with a slide show - pretty cool usually.

That looks like the Lake Effect stuff that we get here. The snow that comes from the prevailing winds is much drier (and much easier to shovel!)

There is an old metal bridge near us, every few years they paint it some ghastly gray or institutional green to cover the colorful graffiti. This morning on our walk we saw the paint peeling off, per usual but someone had painted a lovely dove in one of the chipped openings. Made me hopeful for some reason.park june dove.jpg

Agree - I much prefer good graffiti to a slopped on layer of whatever paint people seem to use to cover it up. That dove really looks lie it belongs - wonderful photo

In the afternoon, I positioned a camera on a tripod & took a shot of the set table.
We then had a great dinner & at sunset took another image.
I superimposed one over the other & erased the lower part of the sunset image.

I was trying to get the the sign in, without most of the surrounding housing, to give it a bit more atmosphere.

It's just a little branch line that gets 2-3 trains a week........ which move very slowly, given the state of the rails.

not so much the developing structure, as the materials used. And only yesterday, because of this assignment, did I make an obvious (to myself) connection as to why. One of my most memorable experiences as a seven year old child, was sneaking on weekends with my best friend, into houses that were being built in a new suburb that was originally farm land. We collected discarded materials, like little tiles and off-cuts of wood to build our own constructions. They were beautiful to us.

This photo is from my neighbours house, presently under construction. Unfortunately I will miss the most exciting part of the process, as I will be away soon, overseas … the part where the variety of materials begin to include more than only wood.

These two are from a house under construction I also snuck in to 10 years ago.

love number 3.
4 houses are currently being built on the two lots next to us - I'll post some photos when I get to my main computer.

On a different note I really enjoy photographing old abandoned places - can be a little risky but some of the images more than make up for that.

I spied a rainbow outside the window. Cliché, right? Except for one thing...

It's on the ground! It stayed awhile, while I changed lenses:

This is my neighborhood. There are houses up there, a few. I bet they didn't know they were in the middle of a magical event Smile

I can imagine how your eyes must have been startled and your breath taken away. Thank you for sharing that image.

I've had two exceptional rainbow experiences that took my breath away. One was up in the mountains where I lived on Kauai. I was looking down into a vast, steep valley filled with pure white mist and the sun was behind me. As I was watching the 'nothingness' a perfectly circular rainbow appeared in the middle ... and then a shadow of a person in the centre of it. It was me, boy was I blown away. Someday I'll have the slide scanned into a digital image.

The other was sitting at the beginning of night on a volcanic beach on the big island. I saw something I'd never dreamed of, a moon bow over the ocean.

And yes, bring that other rainbow picture to show us too Biggrin

It means finding the patience to go through hundreds of slides, but I will at some point. I don't remember if I photographed the moonbow, but I guess I'll find out as I look through my past in the form of slides.

My s/o is currently outside trying to make sense of ours at the moment. We have a good division of labor - she designs, plants, weeds and points to where holes need digging. I dig holes, hardscape where I'm told to, and mow. This arrangement keeps us both happy as I really detest weeding and enjoy the brainless stuff.
She was a landscape designer in a previous life so this stuff is second nature to her.

I'll take a couple of shots later today - I have to mow the lawn first though as it has gone haywire over the last couple of days.

The mostly b&w butterfly, fluttering is stunning, and magic. Is it really possible to keep one half of your body still while the other is in nonstop motion? And the last butterfly, so perfectly still, and displaying the most beautiful arrangement of colour and pattern.

Keep enjoying yourselves and all the beautiful things you encounter.

some butterflies have two wings, others have four. the mostly black and white butterfly has four. i may be totally out of my tree, but what i have observed is that the top wings do most of the beating and the lower pair does the steering. anyway, sometimes the upper wings are all frenzied motion, while the lower wings and trunk are stable. they are quite amazing little animals to watch., i've always been fascinated by them.
