Russia Defaulted on its Debt

for the first time in a hundred years. Russia claims to have tried but the US and England have tightened the embargo on finance.

Russia still has $600 billion in gold and foreign currency, half in Russia and half unavailable outside the country. I think the international community should use the $300 billion they have to work on rebuilding Ukraine.

The Supreme Court's mythmaking

Today's occasion for a diary is a clever piece in Politico by Joshua Zeitz about recent Supreme Court decisions. Apparently, the ruling faction of the current Supreme Court believes in a doctrine called originalism, which argues that:

all statements in the constitution must be interpreted based on the original understanding "at the time it was adopted".

Ear Worm

Jerry Jeff Walker made an album around 1991. It featured some country, with a couple of songs that were rock, one with a very jazzy sound.
So, while I drove on a country road, Dear One was fiddling with the music, and we listened to the entire album, and this song twice.
Since then, we can't lose it from our heads.
Aye yi yi...
What's your ear worm today?

The Weekly Watch

Endless War in an Economic Collapse?

It is pretty stupid state of affairs driven by American aggression...trying to bully the world into submission. Russia and China want to develop a fair world order which they discussed at this weeks BRIC's conference in order to evade the dominance of the USD and create a cooperative, mutually beneficial world trade framework. That is the very thing the US wants to prevent. No, the US will be top dog and we'll commit suicide and even destroy the world in order to maintain our fading global hegemony. The current state of affairs makes it plain the US is incompetent, inefficient, and consumed by greed for ever more profit.

The problem with anti-imperialists who spend all their time criticizing the evil US empire is that there aren’t nearly enough of them...
Hey I’ve got a great idea, let’s start World War Three over a NATO country that most Americans don’t even know exists. Liberals learned the word “Lithuania” ten seconds ago and they’re ready to nuke Moscow over it.

Album of the Week - 6-25-22

Afternoon folks!

This week there's more great stuff. There's a Muddy Waters live album, an album by a fairly obscure Texas blues artist, Weldon "Juke Boy" Bonner and another Mississippi John Hurt album recorded after his "rediscovery" by folk music enthusiasts. There's an album by harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite, two Savoy Brown albums and a late 70's album by Peter Green.

Enjoy!

Looking forward to a future where the subject of an Open Thread is simply a celebration of a few common experiences making life a little simpler. The book Everything You Need to Know You Learned in Kindergarten crossed my path in the early 90's when air travel was part of the regular business week and airport layovers provided ample time for reading. It is one book I have revisited when I begin taking life too seriously.

Friday Night Photos Zoocchini Edition

Happy Friday everyone. As always, post any photos you like.

I spent a few hours at the zoo Wednesday morning. And just like my visit to the Safari Park a few weeks ago none of the large animals were out or were sleeping. Thankfully the smaller critters were good enough to step up and say take my picture.
