Album of the Week

Album of the Week 7-5-25

Afternoon folks!

There's some great stuff this week. Starting out, there's Albert Collins live in the early 90's followed by a guy who's not well known but wrote a blues standard and made some great records back in the day, Mr. Bo from Detroit. Following that is an album from The Valentinos, one of the best vocal groups of their time - on the album are a couple of their original hits that became hits for others, like All Over Now, which was a big hit for the Rolling Stones. The Valentinos were originally a family gospel group (the Womack family) and Sam Cooke convinced them to make secular music. Finishing up, we've got a zydeco treat from Beau Jocque, well worth a listen.

Enjoy the tunes and have a great weekend!

Afternoon folks!

This week we've got one great harmonica player and two great guitarists for you. Starting off we've got Harmonica George Smith fronting the band Bacon Fat in the early 1970's. After that we have guitar wizard Roy Buchanan's early recordings before he was a famous unknown. Finishing up we've got a mid '80's solo album from Richard Thompson an interesting and inventive guitarist.

Enjoy the music and have a great weekend!

Album of the Week 6-21-25

Afternoon folks!

There's a buncha blues for you this week. Starting out is an album from a fellow who should be better known having performed and made records with Otis Redding and Duane Allman (among others) - that would be Johnny Jenkins. After that is another not well-known blues guy, Zuzu Bollin from Texas. Following that is a later career album from Kansas City's Big Joe Turner. After that we've got some more or less acoustic blues from Ron Thompson and some uptown, sophisticated blues from Leon Redbone. Finishing up in the diversity department is some fine fiddlin' from Vassar Clements and friends.

Enjoy the tunes and have a great weekend!

Album of the Week 6-14-25

Afternoon folks!

There's a small, bluesy kinda haul for you this weekend. Starting out we've got a 60's album from Luther Allison followed by an album by Bacon Fat, an aggregation that included two great harmonica players, a young Rod Piazza and Harmonica George Smith. After that, I posted an album from a week ago from Howlin' Wolf, but this week if you check the playlist on youtube, you'll find 20 more tunes appended to the list. Finishing up there's David Bromberg with what I think is his most mellow album, but still well worth a listen for the great playing.

Enjoy the tunes and have a great weekend!

Album of the Week 6-7-25

Afternoon folks!

Well, it's a deceptively small haul this week. First we've got an album from blues harmonica player Junior Parker, followed by the first part of a 2 part Howlin' Wolf compilation, which is so large it took a few days to upload. It's worth checking out, it's not a greatest hits compilation and features stuff that you don't hear often. Finishing up in the diversity department is a nice album from Tom Ball & Kenny Sultan.

Enjoy the tunes and have a great weekend!

Album of the Week 5-31-25

Afternoon folks!

Small haul this week, I've been busy with some projects around the house and haven't uploaded much this week. So there's an album with excellent harmonica player Lester Butler backed by a band that isn't the Red Devils. After that and finishing up in the diversity department is an album of jug bandish tunes penned by Norman Greenbaum, the fellow who would later go on to have a really big hit with "Spirit In The Sky." Anyway, it's a fun album worth a listen if you like that sort of thing.

Enjoy the tunes and have a great weekend!

Album of the Week 5-24-25

Afternoon folks!

Happy holiday weekend! We've got some stuff to amuse you for a bit, here. Starting off with some Chicago blues, we've got a live Junior Wells album from the 60's followed by an album of Otis Spann tickling the ivories for you. After that it's on to the father of British blues, Alexis Korner. Then it's back to Texas for an album from a fine guitarist Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets, after which we bounce back to Britain again for a live album from Chicken Shack later in their career. After that we've got some folky/acoustic kinda blues from Tom Ball and Kenny Sultan which segues nicely into a classic album from Leon Redbone. We finish off in the diversity department with some prog rock from Gentle Giant.

Enjoy the tunes and have a great holiday weekend!

Album of the Week 5-17-25

Afternoon folks!

There's a mixture of interesting stuff for you all this week. Starting off we've got Chicago blues harmonica player Shakey Jake Harris with a fine album including songs from his repertoire backing Magic Sam. After that it's some Kansas City Blues with shouter Big Joe Turner supported by guitarist Pee Wee Crayton. After that, there's a compilation of John Lee Hooker recordings from the late 40's that he recorded as "Texas Slim." Following that it's on to an album of Dr. John with The Meters from the 70's and then it's guitarist Rory Gallagher's Beat Club (a German teevee show) performances. After that there's some serious rock and roll from Link Wray after which we mellow out in the diversity department with the Rowan Brothers and finish off with The Red Clay Ramblers.

Enjoy the tunes and have a great weekend!

Album of the Week 5-10-25

Afternoon folks!

There's some great blues here for you this week, starting off with a B.B. King album recorded with a bunch of prominent British blues-rock types back in the early 70's. Following that is a German Clarence Gatemouth Brown release, showing off a more countryish blues style with a good helping of Gatemouth's fiddle playing. After that we've got an album of a couple of lesser-known Chicago blues players, Morris Pejoe and Arthur "Big Boy" Spires the latter of whom is accompanied by Willie "Big Eyes" Smith in his early incarnation as a harmonica player before he became a drummer for (among others) Muddy Waters.

Next we move on to a great album from David Bromberg followed by Paul Geremia (a lesser-known acoustic blues guitarist and harmonica player). After that it's diversity time, there's some rock and roll with NRBQ, some country rock from Richie Furay (formerly of Buffalo Springfield and Poco) and we finish off with a fine album from Emmylou Harris.

Enjoy the tunes and have a great weekend!

Album of the Week 5-3-25

Afternoon folks!

There's some great tunes here for you this week, starting with one of my favorite blues guitarists, Earl Hooker who was an amazing slide player and inventive player generally. After that we've got what I think is blues harmonica player Little Sonny's best album, a good listen. After that, Roy Buchanan, an amazing guitarist at the peak of his career, 2 sets recorded live. After that are albums from DC area guitarist, Tom Principato and one from John Mooney an interesting slide player who studied with Son House. Finishing up in the diversity department, there's an album from the Marshall Tucker Band.

Enjoy the tunes and have a great weekend!
