Album of the Week

Album of the Week 7-15-23

Afternoon folks!

This week in the blues category we've got an album from Detroit bluesman and former sideman to John Lee Hooker, Eddie Kirkland. Following that, there's a late 70's B.B. King album.

Moving on to blues-rock, there's a 1977 album from Bonnie Raitt, albums by The Pirates and The Electric Flag. Following that there's some spacey-trippy music from Hawkind and we finish up with an album from Doc Watson - something for everybody? I dunno. Hope so.

Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Album of the Week 7-8-23

Afternoon folks!

I've cleaned up and digitized a bunch of good stuff in the last couple of weeks. Starting off, there's an early 70's Etta James album on which she does some amazing covers of Randy Newman songs. After that, Art Neville (the elder Neville brother) has a compilation of early New Orleans rock n roll - great stuff!

There's scads of blues-rock this week with The Electric Flag, a Dr. Feelgood album from their early period with Wilko Johnson on guitar and and album from a less-well-known british artist Lord Sutch (sometimes known as "Screaming Lord Sutch") which features people you'll probably recognize - Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, John Bonham, Nicky Hopkins and Noel Redding.

After that, there's what I think is John Prine's best album "Diamonds in the Rough," and we finish up this week with some fun older recordings from Ukulele Ike.

Enjoy!

Album of the Week 7-1-23

Afternoon folks!

This week we're starting off with a late 60's album from James Cotton, when apparently his producer was going for a jazzier sound. After that there's a live album of Stax artists performing at the Apollo Theater (I think in 1964) including Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas and Ben E. King.

We've got a bunch of blues-rock with Delaney & Bonnie with Eric Clapton (I think that the gods of copyright blocked the last tune, a nice Little Richard medley), followed by Steppenwolf's first throwing in the towel album (Rest In Peace), followed by Dr. Feelgood's first album.

Then there's a hard to classify album by Tom Ball and Kenny Sultan, respectively a very talented harmonica player and a very talented acoustic guitarist.

We finish off this week's bounty with some Oakland soul from Tower of Power.

Enjoy!

Album of the Week 6-24-23

Afternoon folks!

Surprise! There are more albums. Smile

Starting out, there's an acoustic blues album from one-man band Jesse "Lone Cat" Fuller, followed by another blues album by Little Junior Parker. After that there's the third album by Osibisa (a band from Ghana). Then it's blues-rock time with albums from the J. Geils Band, some members of Foghat between the time that they left Savoy Brown and when they founded Foghat and an album from The Blasters. Then we move on to country rock with a live album from The Flying Burrito Brothers and we finish up with a classical-rock album from Renaissance.

Enjoy!

Album of the Week 6-17-23

Afternoon folks!

Well, another week, some more music... First up there's some blues - a live 1971 album from Taj Mahal, followed by a late 60's Otis Redding album. Then there's a bunch of blues-rock with Delaney & Bonnie, a live album from Rory Gallagher and yet some more Foghat. Then there's a change of pace with some bluegrass/americana from Tony Rice, some country-rock with The Flying Burrito Brothers (I'll probably post some more from this live album into the playlist next week sometime) and we finish off with an album from Tony Joe White.

Enjoy!

Album of the Week 6-10-23

Afternoon folks!

There's some more goodies for you this week. We start out with a late 60's album from Jimmy Witherspoon, followed by an album of a New Orleans piano "professor," Tuts Washington. We've got a bunch of blues-rock - a mostly instrumental album by Harvey Mandel (from Canned Heat and elsewhere), followed by a mid 70's Elvin Bishop album and we've got a mid 70's Foghat album. Following that there are a bunch of tracks from a Doc Watson album which I may add some to later - and we finish up with a live double album from The Tubes.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the tunes!

Album of the Week 6-3-23

Afternoon folks!

It's been another good week for uploading music. This week there's a nice acoustic blues album by Larry Johnson on which he is accompanied on harmonica and slide guitar by John Hammond Jr. After that, there's a nice compilation album of Willie Mabon doing some fine Chicago blues. Following up is some blues rock with the Climax Blues Band, one of their early 70's albums when they strayed less from the blues style than later. Following that is another, my favorite album by Osibisa, a band from Ghana. Then there's some rockabilly with the Stray Cats and we finish up the week with a spacey-prog rock album from Hawkwind.

Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Album of the Week - 5-27-23

Afternoon folks!

I hope everybody is having a good holiday weekend. To that end, here's some good stuff for you guys to check out.

There's a Clarence Gatemouth Brown album and a great Sippie Wallace album from the 80's with Bonnie Raitt guesting. After that we've got a bunch of blues rock with Paul Butterfield in his post Butterfield Blues Band period followed by a classic album by The Band. After that there's a compilation of some early Duane and Greg Allman recordings followed by Delaney & Bonnie. We finish up with some prog rock from Nektar.

Enjoy!

Album of the Week - 5-20-23

Afternoon folks!

Well, there's a bunch of good stuff this week. There's some zydeco to get things rolling with a compilation of Clifton Chenier's Arhoolie recordings. After that Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder do their best impression of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee - not to be missed! Doc Watson follows up with a mid-60's album and we change pace after that with Osibisa. Osibisa is a band from Ghana and worth a listen. Following that there's some rock with Foghat and some rock/prog with The Tubes to finish things off.

Enjoy!

Album of the Week - 5-13-23

Afternoon folks!

This week there's a compilation album of Chuck Willis' r&b hits and a live recording of John Mayall in the blues category. There's some rockabilly with the Stray Cats, some blues rock with Steppenwolf and Little Feat. There's also a countryish, bluesy Rita Coolidge album. We finish up with Don "Sugar Cane" Harris (formerly of Don & Dewey) playing some proggy bluesy music wherein you might hear an echo or two of his friendship with Frank Zappa. I'm not sure if that last one will play well, because youtube has decided to censor it as adult material because (gasp) the cover art of the album has a naked nipple displayed on it. I guess youtube is taking no chances in this world where Michaelangelo's David is labelled pornography. Yeesh!

Enjoy!
