No, I don't think for one instant that Shumer has changed his spots. Shumer, and what he represents, is why Mr. Trump has been elected president. He walked straight out of Hillary Clinton's campaign headquarters, licked his finger, stuck it directly into the breeze, and immediately started following it.

Shumer is a snake; the worst type of Corporate Democrat -- with the possible exception of the Clintons themselves. He should be treated as though he's carrying bubonic plague.

...and he makes Hillary's "public" vs. "private" issues positions look good! If his lips are moving in public, generally speaking, question everything! And, then research and follow-up on his actions relating to whatever that subject matter might be. 9 times out of 10, when I've done this, I've always been very disappointed. The don't call Schumer "Senator Wall Street" for nothing.

He's right up there with the Clintons, DWS and Donna Brazile in the protected tower of out-of-touch DNC elitists who dumped their garbage upon the working poor and middle class of America in 2016, dumped on Bernie and what he was trying to communicate through their arrogant heads, dumped on the unions and labor activists, and then still arrogantly assumed the people they despised would come out to support them. Even now they're still clueless. They need to be swept out of power for good. They and all their fellow DLC fools are poison for the progressive movement.

I would like Ellison to be DNC Chair and drain the entire neoliberal swamp in the Democratic Party, but at the same time I find the fact that Schumer endorsed him to be highly suspect. This feels like more sheepdogging for some reason. While I'm no longer a Democrat, I'd still support any reforms to make the political environment more conducive to change from the Left, even if that means collaborating with those who are still trying to reform the party from the inside.

is to become a democratic organization in a big way. Small d democratic. Minimal insiders. There are Democratic County Central Committees all over the country, and they could really fix a lot of things by using the power of activists to pick their winners. Hell, if they did that, I would be interested in joining their party. Going to their meetings would be fun and productive.

appear to be just as prone to being corrupted as the higher-level committees. Here in San Francisco it seems to be a spot where temporarily disadvantaged politicians can go and rake in cash for their DCCC spot that isn't regulated the way the voted-in by the public positions are.

Shoot, when you listen to the horror stories that come out of the unpaid groups that run home-owner associations, PTA, or children sports who would be surprised if even low-level political orgs, especially if there's a stipend, are overrun with grifters and would-be penny-ante Napoleons?

I wish I could offer an easy suggestion to avoid those situations, but eternal vigilance seems to be the only option. Max Weber's writings point out how organizations naturally sink into prioritizing continuation of the organization over performing the org's goals for existence. But someone has to run things . . . .

You're right that they are corruptible and corrupted (based on direct observation...). But check out the bylaws of your local district and county Democratic orgs, to see how officers are elected. Usually it's by the low-level worker bees who are "precinct captains" or "precinct committee officers" or similar title. The district and county orgs are desperate for volunteers, and many of these precinct positions are open. So, get yourself elected or appointed to a precinct office. The work is the usual voter mobilization -- voter registration and GOTV. Yes, you'll have to talk to your neighbors -- don't worry, they don't bite (or, most of them). Be helpful, do other grunt work, get appreciated. From among the progressives active in your district org, pick out one to run for each district and county office. If you've got enough progressive precinct officers to vote in progressives for district and county offices, now you've spread the progressive influence another level up the chain. Among those regional offices are likely representatives to the state central committee. So now you're moving in on the state party. Your progressive state representatives will at some point get to vote for state party offices, and DNC representatives. We're doing this in Washington State.

to stave off the onslaught of big money and big media buys.

Running local or focusing local works for the Republicans because they want the same thing -- less government, less interference in the economy. So the crazier the base gets on that front, the better. Let them nominate peeps that are unacceptable on the national state. Who cares, we benefit at the end.

But local Democratic operations are a dire challenge to the Democratic leadership's tenuous relationship to their corporate sponsors. Local Democratic organizations, at a root or base level, challenge, harm, and eventually seek to overthrow, the national Democratic party's political sponsors.

Local operations rarely embrace the neoliberal ideology, and as such, they are cancers and must be lanced or they will kill the host.

Political kneecapping and character assassination come from on high as soon as a local operation gets some traction. There must be a credible national head for any effective opposition movement to create, maintain, and protect, the body.

None of the local and state offices in WA are appointed -- they are all elected, and the election starts with the PCOs. I'd assume the bylaws are similar in other states. Other DNC members can't tell a state who to send.

For instance, there was little to no voter registration by the Democratic Party in WA this year *before the caucus*. I questioned this, and was told it would be done during the general. Hmm...why wouldn't they want more voters for the caucus...oh, right, the new voters are more likely to go for Sanders! Now, if we're the ones doing the work, we can plan the events.

During GOTV doorbelling, there was no requirement to pressure voters to vote a particular way, and I didn't and wouldn't have done that.

On min. wage in dem convention platform committee. As revealed by Wikileaks, Clinton was advised to opposed $15/hr by party insiders. In fact, from all appearances Clinton was aware of the national fight for $15/hr min. wage. And the SIEU endorsed Clinton over Sanders--union leadership also needs some purging.

https://www.salon.com/2016/06/25/clinton_appointees_oppose_15_minimum_wa...

The representatives appointed by Hillary Clinton to the Democratic Party’s platform drafting committee voted against a $15 minimum wage amendment on Friday.

The five representatives who were appointed by Clinton’s presidential opponent, Bernie Sanders, supported the amendment.

The proposal was defeated eight-to-six. The only person on the committee aside from Sanders’ surrogates who supported the amendment was California Rep. Barbara Lee.

...

Rep. Keith Ellison, who was appointed to the committee by Sanders, proposed an amendment to the DNC’s platform that would make support for a $15 per hour federal minimum wage absolutely unambiguous

You're right, it is a lot of work...if it's done by one person. But if the rest of DNC leadership can be replaced, then Ellison wouldn't have to work against them. DNC members could be obstructive as well, so progressives should start taking over their local and state party orgs, so they can send better DNC members. (I've posted multiple other comments about how to reclaim and reform local and state parties.)

My immediate concern was that I don't want this to derail Ellison's work in Congress. I have been saying for years that I hope to be around long enough to vote for Ellison for President.

Nevertheless, Ellison has one trait that would be a welcome change in the DNC: He's a genuinely nice person, and people like him. He doesn't sneer or look down on others. We lost this election (IMO) in large part because of the Clinton campaign's and the DNC's hostility to *voters* -- calling potential voters "Bernie Bros" and "deplorables" ain't how you win votes. Running against your opponent's potential voters instead of running against your opponent is a losing strategy. I am certain Ellison will not fall into that trap.

Well, the response on DK was hell no to Glenn. I posted Glenn's article which asked if the dems would learn. After the first 4 comments I responded that there was progress because I probably would not be kicked off TOP for my comment. A couple of people encouraged me to leave.

This is why it is not so much that Donald Trump won this election as that Hillary Clinton and her campaign lost. Here the Democratic Party only has itself to blame. Bernie Sanders offered a far more potent challenge to the Trump phenomenon, both because he did not carry any of the baggage that Clinton brought to the election and also – perhaps more importantly – he represented a far sharper ideological counterweight to Trump.

http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/11/11/trump-brexit-and-the-collapse-of-...

Contempt for the white working class cost Hillary Clinton the White House to no small degree. The exit polls are very clear on that. Those polls also tell us I think that Bernie Sanders would very likely have prevailed over Trump in a general election. His leftish populist campaign was pitched largely to the economic and anti-plutocratic grievances and sentiments of the white majority working and middle classes, most of whom aren’t frothing racists, nativists, and sexists (Hillary’s “deplorables” comment notwithstanding). I think enough of those voters would have recognized Sanders as a more authentic articulator of their views and anger than Trump for Sanders to have prevailed over the Deplorable Donald.

As someone who was very critical of Sanders from the left (in part because of Bernie’s failure to go for the kill against Mrs. Clinton) from the get go, let me say flat out that the Democrats ran the wrong candidate. And Trump wasn’t wrong to point out that the Clintons and their allies atop the Democratic National Committee rigged the game against Bernie. The rigging was consistent with the neoliberal corporate Democratic Party elite’s longstanding vicious hatred of left-leaning progressives and anti-plutocratic populists in the ranks of their business party.

http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/11/11/the-long-death-march-of-the-disma...

First, the Democratic loss. There’s no two ways about it – this was a huge, and embarrassing loss for a party that’s clearly fallen out of favor with the mass public. Hillary Clinton and the Democratic establishment were badly exposed in this loss, and the party is in the middle of a full-on meltdown. The country was told that Trump had little to no chance of winning, and that Hillary was a shoe-in to be our first female president. Obviously, that was a fiction that few challenged considering all the polls that consistently predicted Clinton would prevail on November 8th.

Looking back, it should be obvious that the Democratic Party’s Achilles Heel was its near-complete failure to prioritize the issues of economic inequality, jobs, and the aiding of America’s working class, middle class, and poor. The Dems had ample opportunity in Obama’s first two years in office to adopt a platform committed to limiting Wall Street power and aimed at serving the public via reforms promoting re-unionizing of the nation, introducing universal health care, and instituting a living wage. To put it simply, the party blew it big time, and it’s come back to burn the party badly, with Clinton now serving in the public mind as the ultimate symbol of Wall Street power and greed.

http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/11/11/88237/

It’s hard to empathize with the corporate liberals who streamed from the Javits Center in tears Tuesday night. Their corrupt Democratic Party had a good if not great candidate in Bernie Sanders and their DNC deliberately fought to keep him from winning the primaries. In every poll taken during his campaign, Sanders beat Donald Trump in a hypothetical general election.

Oh, they’ll start pouring out their bile now, blaming everyone but themselves and their candidate. It was the media’s fault for popularizing Trump (a Clinton strategy). It was the FBI’s fault for re-opening the email case (thanks to Huma Abedin’s ex). It was stupid Middle America’s fault for being racist and sexist (was that why they voted for Trump?). It was third-party supporters who screwed us in Florida again (Paul Krugman and Rachel Maddow are furious that leftists didn’t vote for their heroine). It was Russia’s fault for hacking the DNC (no evidence) and plotting to invade Europe (no evidence).

http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/11/11/blaming-everybody/

The Democratic Party establishment this election cycle threw any shred of principle to the wind in orchestrating the nomination of Hillary Clinton, surely the most disliked candidate to run on a major party ticket in history. The party did this knowing that it was promoting a candidate who had a tin ear for the issues of ordinary people, who was demonstrably corrupt and dismissive of laws and ethical standards, and who was actually under investigation by the FBI the whole time she was running in the primaries.

We know, thanks to principled Democratic Party leaders who quit like Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, the vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, and to emails leaked by Wikileaks, that the DNC worked assiduously throughout the primary season to undermine Bernie Sanders’ insurgent primary campaign. The DNC and the Clinton campaign — actually facets of the same malignant organization — did this by scheduling early debates at times, like during the Superbowl, when few people would be paying attention, by working with corrupt mainstream journalists to plant hit pieces on Sanders, resorting to cheap red-baiting, lying about his history of civil rights activism, and questioning his mental abilities, and even resorting to voter suppression — usually a tactic favored more by Republican Party operatives.

When this DNC bias and manipulation of the primary campaign was exposed, forcing the resignation of DNC chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Clinton immediately made that disgraced Florida congresswoman the titular head of her own campaign, demonstrating her utter contempt for ethics and for the Democratic base.

http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/11/11/the-silver-linings-in-trumps-win/

Add this to the reasons why I hate Hillary: I was all set to go with yet another screed on how anti-Trump hysteria was, and always had been, a distraction, and how the most urgent task now is to build a movement that would prevent Commander-in-Chief Hillary from provoking overt confrontations and proxy wars with nuclear powers – only to find that the Empress of Ineptitude couldn’t even defeat a billionaire buffoon, a con artist extraordinaire, who seemed uninterested in governing but only in not losing to a girl, especially one as feckless as he knew Hillary to be.

She had the backing of the entire capitalist class, including the most nefarious high flyers among them, and of all “respectable” corporate media outlets. And, once Bernie Sanders crossed over to the Dark Side, she had no serious opposition within the Democratic Party. She also enjoyed at least the passive support of the Republican establishment. And yet she lost!

Hillary Voters Owe It To America To Stop Calling Everyone A Nazi And Start Reading WikiLeaks

If you still believe that Donald Trump was elected because of racism, it is because you have remained willfully ignorant of what has been happening in your country. If you still believe that Trump’s election is indicative of a neo-fascist uprising in America, it is because you have not ventured outside of your self-reinforcing validation loop of fellow Clinton voters and your corporate media echo chamber. If you still, days later, think that Hillary Clinton’s loss is the fault of anyone other than Hillary Clinton, it’s because you haven’t been reading WikiLeaks.

This cannot continue. If the progressive revolution has any hope of mounting a meaningful counteroffensive at any time in the future, the people who supported Hillary Clinton need to stop calling everyone a Nazi long enough to do some actual research into the facts behind where they went wrong in 2016, humble themselves, and admit that they have been completely wrong about everything.

Then again, I'm not holding my breath.
