The choice of Keith Ellison v. Howard Dean as DNC Chair is such a perfect test of whether Dems learned anything https://t.co/ZapYx9Q26G

How true!
I was kinda surprised to see Shumer endorse Ellison -but maybe that's how a politician sways with the breeze. So, anyway, Ellison Ellison Ellison!
Has Shumer changed his spots?
No, I don't think for one instant that Shumer has changed his spots. Shumer, and what he represents, is why Mr. Trump has been elected president. He walked straight out of Hillary Clinton's campaign headquarters, licked his finger, stuck it directly into the breeze, and immediately started following it.
Shumer is a snake; the worst type of Corporate Democrat -- with the possible exception of the Clintons themselves. He should be treated as though he's carrying bubonic plague.
Living in NY, I've followed Schumer pretty closely...
...and he makes Hillary's "public" vs. "private" issues positions look good! If his lips are moving in public, generally speaking, question everything! And, then research and follow-up on his actions relating to whatever that subject matter might be. 9 times out of 10, when I've done this, I've always been very disappointed. The don't call Schumer "Senator Wall Street" for nothing.
"Freedom is something that dies unless it's used." --Hunter S. Thompson
Schumer disgusts me
He's right up there with the Clintons, DWS and Donna Brazile in the protected tower of out-of-touch DNC elitists who dumped their garbage upon the working poor and middle class of America in 2016, dumped on Bernie and what he was trying to communicate through their arrogant heads, dumped on the unions and labor activists, and then still arrogantly assumed the people they despised would come out to support them. Even now they're still clueless. They need to be swept out of power for good. They and all their fellow DLC fools are poison for the progressive movement.
Of course not
Schumer is a slimeball that should never be trusted. IMO, he's all about trying to do his part to get back all the not-light-skinned Democrats that Hillary lost. If I was Keith Ellison, I'd tell him to go to Hell.
Guess we'll see how real Ellison is.
Schumer Has A Plan
Put Ellison in charge of the Party and make him too busy to mess with GOP plans in the House.
Vowing To Oppose Everything Trump Attempts.
My suspicion as well. Sidewall him.
I am very susicpicious now.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
That's exactly what he did. Expect more of her
acolytes to abandon ship and try to save themselves. Schumer is still Schumer but right now he's a little rattled.
I'm tired of this back-slapping "Isn't humanity neat?" bullshit. We're a virus with shoes, okay? That's all we are. - Bill Hicks
Politics is the entertainment branch of industry. - Frank Zappa
That immediately sent up red flags for me.
I would like Ellison to be DNC Chair and drain the entire neoliberal swamp in the Democratic Party, but at the same time I find the fact that Schumer endorsed him to be highly suspect. This feels like more sheepdogging for some reason. While I'm no longer a Democrat, I'd still support any reforms to make the political environment more conducive to change from the Left, even if that means collaborating with those who are still trying to reform the party from the inside.
All they really need to do
is to become a democratic organization in a big way. Small d democratic. Minimal insiders. There are Democratic County Central Committees all over the country, and they could really fix a lot of things by using the power of activists to pick their winners. Hell, if they did that, I would be interested in joining their party. Going to their meetings would be fun and productive.
Those DCCCs
appear to be just as prone to being corrupted as the higher-level committees. Here in San Francisco it seems to be a spot where temporarily disadvantaged politicians can go and rake in cash for their DCCC spot that isn't regulated the way the voted-in by the public positions are.
Shoot, when you listen to the horror stories that come out of the unpaid groups that run home-owner associations, PTA, or children sports who would be surprised if even low-level political orgs, especially if there's a stipend, are overrun with grifters and would-be penny-ante Napoleons?
I wish I could offer an easy suggestion to avoid those situations, but eternal vigilance seems to be the only option. Max Weber's writings point out how organizations naturally sink into prioritizing continuation of the organization over performing the org's goals for existence. But someone has to run things . . . .
I'm also residing in SF at the moment
And weren't the elections here a fucking joke?
It really doesn't matter how theoretically accepting your city is of the despised and persecuted if none of them can afford to live there and you, the voter, keep knowingly electing people who ensure that the situation remains unchanged.
(The Homeless don't count as a minority, of course. Let's kick'em around a little more!)
'Most Liberal City in the Country" my ass. This place is way too taken with its own image.
San Francisco Has Changed
I remember the friendly city it once was. I was last up there around 2006. I swore I'd never return, because the friendliness was gone, replaced with a wary hostility aimed at the outsider. That's how smug Yuppies are, I guess.
Vowing To Oppose Everything Trump Attempts.
The lower-level organizations are much easier to reform
You're right that they are corruptible and corrupted (based on direct observation...). But check out the bylaws of your local district and county Democratic orgs, to see how officers are elected. Usually it's by the low-level worker bees who are "precinct captains" or "precinct committee officers" or similar title. The district and county orgs are desperate for volunteers, and many of these precinct positions are open. So, get yourself elected or appointed to a precinct office. The work is the usual voter mobilization -- voter registration and GOTV. Yes, you'll have to talk to your neighbors -- don't worry, they don't bite (or, most of them). Be helpful, do other grunt work, get appreciated. From among the progressives active in your district org, pick out one to run for each district and county office. If you've got enough progressive precinct officers to vote in progressives for district and county offices, now you've spread the progressive influence another level up the chain. Among those regional offices are likely representatives to the state central committee. So now you're moving in on the state party. Your progressive state representatives will at some point get to vote for state party offices, and DNC representatives. We're doing this in Washington State.
The Problem With Local Level is That They Lack the Jack or Clout
to stave off the onslaught of big money and big media buys.
Running local or focusing local works for the Republicans because they want the same thing -- less government, less interference in the economy. So the crazier the base gets on that front, the better. Let them nominate peeps that are unacceptable on the national state. Who cares, we benefit at the end.
But local Democratic operations are a dire challenge to the Democratic leadership's tenuous relationship to their corporate sponsors. Local Democratic organizations, at a root or base level, challenge, harm, and eventually seek to overthrow, the national Democratic party's political sponsors.
Local operations rarely embrace the neoliberal ideology, and as such, they are cancers and must be lanced or they will kill the host.
Political kneecapping and character assassination come from on high as soon as a local operation gets some traction. There must be a credible national head for any effective opposition movement to create, maintain, and protect, the body.
“Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.” ~ Sun Tzu
Note the state orgs choose DNC representatives
None of the local and state offices in WA are appointed -- they are all elected, and the election starts with the PCOs. I'd assume the bylaws are similar in other states. Other DNC members can't tell a state who to send.
But you have to "be helpful" first
In other words, you have to work for whoever or whatever the corrupt party is running.
We can influence what gets done
For instance, there was little to no voter registration by the Democratic Party in WA this year *before the caucus*. I questioned this, and was told it would be done during the general. Hmm...why wouldn't they want more voters for the caucus...oh, right, the new voters are more likely to go for Sanders! Now, if we're the ones doing the work, we can plan the events.
During GOTV doorbelling, there was no requirement to pressure voters to vote a particular way, and I didn't and wouldn't have done that.
At this point, it's not resucitation...
It's more like Necrophilia.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.

Here is a good sign. Ellision and min. wage
On min. wage in dem convention platform committee. As revealed by Wikileaks, Clinton was advised to opposed $15/hr by party insiders. In fact, from all appearances Clinton was aware of the national fight for $15/hr min. wage. And the SIEU endorsed Clinton over Sanders--union leadership also needs some purging.

new DNC head should not be...
...a sitting member of Congress. it requires a full time effort. Congress members are too busy dialing for dollars and campaigning to preserve their own job.
no, to Howard Dean. been there, done that. Democratic rehash and now part of the establishment.
i would not be opposed to Martin O'Malley. he sounded his own whistles about the unfairness of the Democratic primary though he may also be considered too close to the establishment now. not sure. it would be hard to find someone not already running in Democratic circles. former Gov. Schweitzer maybe? he seemed to be a kick ass and take names kind of guy to get results.
what about some women? what would be some names to toss into the pool? no to Brazile. good gawd. that staffer was right.
martin o'malley is a dlc dem...
he hides it well while campaigning, he's pretty slick that way. he is afflicted with the same brand of ambition and social climbing desire that the clintons are and would be a repeat of them.
Agree. He is a Clintonian, though perhaps not as extreme.
If he thinks populism will get him elected, he'll populist his little heart out.
Presidents can always make excuses for why they broke their campaign promises. And get re-elected anyway. If Obama proved anything, he proved that.
I would not, however, be surprised if O'Malley runs for President again.
So what is Russ Feingold doing these days? /nt
Nothing
He just lost his Senate bid. At least partially because he hitched his wagon to the Clinton train for this election.
I'm of the opinion that he's sold out quite a bit. He's probably on the progressive side of things in general, but like Liz Warren, I just don't trust him anymore.
Yep, hitched wagon.
Maybe it is bias on my part, but I'm inclined to give Russ some room on this. With a corrupt state party he really didn't have an option but to run the "integrated campaign" with the Clintonians.
Compensated Spokes Model for Big Poor.
Russ seemed better this campaign, but very tired, and
last time he was ready to go along Simpson & Bowles, and acted as if he was owed the job.
I had the impression this year that he still didn't really get it, though he was trying to sound like Bernie despite having endorsed Clinton.
I've heard that, too, but who knows if what we hear is true?
I heard he was chastened by his loss. He now has a different attitude about money in politics, etc.
I second your worry
You're right, it is a lot of work...if it's done by one person. But if the rest of DNC leadership can be replaced, then Ellison wouldn't have to work against them. DNC members could be obstructive as well, so progressives should start taking over their local and state party orgs, so they can send better DNC members. (I've posted multiple other comments about how to reclaim and reform local and state parties.)
My immediate concern was that I don't want this to derail Ellison's work in Congress. I have been saying for years that I hope to be around long enough to vote for Ellison for President.
Nevertheless, Ellison has one trait that would be a welcome change in the DNC: He's a genuinely nice person, and people like him. He doesn't sneer or look down on others. We lost this election (IMO) in large part because of the Clinton campaign's and the DNC's hostility to *voters* -- calling potential voters "Bernie Bros" and "deplorables" ain't how you win votes. Running against your opponent's potential voters instead of running against your opponent is a losing strategy. I am certain Ellison will not fall into that trap.
some stuff from Glenn Greenwald's tweets
.
Here is the link in that tweet. Lee Fang Jan 2016
Howard Dean Says He’s Not a Lobbyist But He Sure Acts Like One
Glenn wrote about Howard Dean being a member of MEK, which was considered a terrorist group by the US govnt until a year or so ago when it was declared OK. It was a group wanting to overthrow Iran. I think it is in the article above by Lee Fang, but I did a search and I am actually going to put up a link to Breibart News
Howard Dean: ‘I Don’t Consider Iran to Be a Muslim Country’
Picking Howard Dean would show that the dems learned nothing.
I think Dean and Rudy G. are in the same consulting group. Glenn said that Rudy G. is one of the most authoritarian politicians in the US.
There's an old story about Giuliani around NYC that...
...goes something like this...
Back when Giuliani was campaigning, and when his top people were interviewing others for campaign positions or senior-level jobs in his mayoral administration(s), there was always one question included in the interview that went something like this: "Would you take a bullet for Rudy?" And, it was up to the interviewer to determine the sincerity of the response.
I'm NOT kidding.
"Freedom is something that dies unless it's used." --Hunter S. Thompson
Why would anyone need to?
Only if the bullet were made of silver could it do Count Rudi any harm.
The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?
That choice is just their way of saying

Just a data point on DK/TOP
On the upside, gjohnsit has a diary with a lot of comments. I recently made a comment here that TOP has lost an important voice when he left.
On the "what is expected side" I posted a comment on the news of the day post in the morning asking if Glenn Greenwald was going to be rehabilitated on TOP. Glenn in a tweet said some liberals are going back to him after trashing him in 2009 after Obama's election.
Well, the response on DK was hell no to Glenn. I posted Glenn's article which asked if the dems would learn. After the first 4 comments I responded that there was progress because I probably would not be kicked off TOP for my comment. A couple of people encouraged me to leave.
NO NEED TO GO THERE. Just a status update. As a wing of the DNC, still in deep denial except letting some other stuff get posted.
With the youth changes, if they don't change, expect be more irrelevant. I don't pay attention, but their page hits didn't seem that bad a few months ago, but almost no one that I would want to read about is there anymore.

Oh My
Went there.
Only made it through a couple of 100 comments out of 1000+.
To steal a phrase, "you're proving my point" comes to mind.

I forget if I read it here or elsewhere, but I'm pretty...
...sure Daily Kos has had a very disappointing Fall, so far, audience-size-wise. That's one of the least surprising things I've read about the place in awhile, since this trend was definitively anticipated by yours truly, given Orange State's reliance upon Facebook to build their audience over the past two or three years. Essentially, they've made a conscious decision over the past couple of years to trash their brand, focusing upon audience size while semi-consciously ignoring the quality of their own--and their community's--content.

How could he even be considered
after his super-delegate pledge was committed to Clinton though Sanders won the state? Now the Dem's are just tossing the burial dirt upon themselves. I'd be happy to hand them a shovel.
"I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones."

I just got...
An e-mail from Bernie asking for me to support Keith. For me, I have to start somewhere and that somewhere is Bernie.
Democrats, we tried to warn you. How is that guilt and shame working out?
I got the same email
as you said. That somewhere is Bernie.

Got the same email.
This was my reply:

But do you feel the axe hanging above?
We can take it all back in the next month. That's the window. Take it all back to us! Away from the elites. dead meat here, all suspect now.

The corrupt are so outta touch...
... so ensconced in their Beltway Bubble that they actually think President Teh Donald isn't their fault. That means they're gonna squat, as they have been, right where they are. Come up with a different plan* to evict those miscreants, reject NeoCon, NeoLib, Identity Politics, corruption (etc., etc.) and I'd consider signing on to the effort. Sign yet another petition calling on the corrupt to stop being corrupt - meh.
*I don't need a fully fleshed-out plan, but I do gotta see some type of bold strategy. I dunno, just tossing noodles at the wall here: Keith, Bernie, Liz, Tulsi, Nina, all of the CPC (etc.) stand up and say something like: We look to the enormous tasks of the next years and recognize that service to all the American people, ethics above reproach and (insert a few more things here) are essential to advocating for and delivering a better quality of life for all our American Sisters & Brothers. Those qualities take precedence over any party tradition. Let's hope we're not forced to choose. (essentially lay it on the line and be prepared to walk away from the Dems if they don't fire the corrupt & incompetent.)
Compensated Spokes Model for Big Poor.
Ellison would be good, but the Shumer endorsement also gives
me pause. HRC and the Dems got what they deserved. Their neoliberal economic policies have ravaged the country, especially the rust belt mid west. As always, it's the economy. I'm thinking of posting the below excerpts over at Orange State. If that doesn't get me banned, nothing will.
Yes, I do love the writing at CounterPunch. I have a subscription and I usually read the whole thing everyday.

gjohnsit...
Was the top rec diary over there for most of the afternoon. And there is actually some good discussion in there.
Democrats, we tried to warn you. How is that guilt and shame working out?
If you can comment around the trolls...
...that have arrived in the diary over the past hour, give or take. There's a pathetic shallowness around there amongst a significant portion of the commentariat, and I'm specifically talking about a cohort of Kossacks that have only been there a year or two, above and beyond the 30-40 usual suspects that are attracted to posts (with their specific intent to troll) authored by folks such as Gjohnsit, myself, and quite a few others.
"Freedom is something that dies unless it's used." --Hunter S. Thompson
Well...
To be honest, when the comment thread reaches over 100, I can't even freaken' open the diary. Even with my new Macbook.
Democrats, we tried to warn you. How is that guilt and shame working out?
I just hope the Wikileaks keep coming
Hillary Voters Owe It To America To Stop Calling Everyone A Nazi And Start Reading WikiLeaks
Then again, I'm not holding my breath.
The MSM loves controversy and conflicts, though, and I'm hoping they finally throw Hillary under the bus. And if/when that happens . . .
I watched the talking heads on tv this a.m.
To a man, and this was on "liberal" MSNBC it was determined by the thought merchants that Keith Ellison will be too busy to lead the DNC.
It's already been decided. No reason for us to trouble our little heads over this.
Having been a vagabond, I
Having been a vagabond, I once lived in the district Ellison ran for his seat in and was able to vote for him. Slight reservations about not being a full-time chair, but no reservations about his progressive qualifications.
Is Greenwald being sarcastic?
Surely nobody thinks that the placing of Keith Ellison in a figurehead position is intended to change anything fundamental about the way power works in the Democratic party.
If it were intended that way, Dem surrogates like Maddow wouldn't be out blaming the left for Trump's win.\
It's a lollipop. It's cotton

Ellison is the lipstick,
The DNC is the pig. Further, when things go awry again, as they most certainly will, they can try to pin their shenanigans on Keith.
