WE NEVER FORGET: Fellow Worker & Rebel Songwriter Joe Hill, 100 Years Later

Goodbye, Joe: You will live long in the hearts of the working class.
Your songs will be sung wherever the workers toil,
urging them to organize.

Joe Hill on the Writing of Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent:

A pamphlet, no matter how good, is never read more than once, but a song is learned by heart and repeated over and over; I maintain that if a person can put a few cold, common sense facts into a song, and dress them up in a cloak of humor to take the dryness off of them, he will succeed in reaching a great number of workers who are too unintelligent or too indifferent to read a pamphlet or an editorial on economic science.

This is the last of the WE NEVER FORGET series honoring the memory of our Fellow Worker and Rebel Songwriter, Joe Hill. Celebrations of the life and songs of Joe Hill have been going on across the nation. Joe Hill's songs are still being sung one hundred years after the State of Utah attempted to silence him forever. New recordings have been made by many talented singers, so that now, even most of FW Joe Hill's lesser known songs are featured in one or more youtube videos.

(The fine work done by the Tribune for the Joe Hill Centenary almost redeems them for the part they played in the frame-up and murder of FW Joe Hill 100 years ago. Almost, but not quite. They should make a formal apology.)

I want my last word in this series to be for the Morrison family. My heart goes out to this family for their terrible loss, a father and husband, a brother and a young son. While I strongly disagree that Joe Hill was guilty of these murders, yet we can all agree that this was a heartbreaking loss for any family to endure, and especially for, the child, Merlin Morrison who was there when his father, John G. Morrison, and brother, Arling Morrison were gunned down in cold blood.

There has recently been a meeting between the members of the Morrison family and members of Joe Hill's family, described by Jeremy Harmon for The Salt Lake Tribune in "The Morrisons and Hägglunds Meet, A Family Finds Peace." This extraordinary article can be found here:

I feel increasing sadness looking at all Joe Hill has given us, because he had so much more to give, which the firing squad ended so unjustly.

Such a loss.

such a loss. He was really hitting his stride as songwriter, which can be seen with the songs that were published in the Joe Hill Memorial edition of the Little Red Songbook after he died. He was writing the music as well as the words.

Workers of the World Awaken and Rebel Girl are two of my favorites. He wrote words and music for both.

Rebel Girl really helped me to develop pride in myself as a working-class woman and a union woman.

My Last Will, was a poem, not a song, but short as it is, it has a deep meaning for me. Saw me thru some rough times many years ago.

Joe Hill was a true working-class songwriter and poet. We need many more just like him.
