Trouble in the 1%ers Paradise: The Paradise Papers Mega Leak

342 (1280x1280).jpg

Chaps my @ss that corporations and billionaires are hiding money offshore to avoid taxes and then pushing for even more tax avoidance in Congress now, when so many needs are going unmet here and so many are suffering.

How can we even know how much is being hidden offshore? The Panama papers exposed some of this, and now there is news of a new exposure :

It's big!

Wonder who in the US will be exposed by this?

Ever wanted to hide some money offshore? Here's how to DIY! /snark

Well, well, well, look what they found:

This could get interesting......

Would LOVE it if the investigation and findings would lead to arrests and prosecutions and changes in regulations.

Dream on, divineorder, dream on....

As with the Panama Papers, the Paradise Papers leak came through a duo of reporters at the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and was then shared with I.C.I.J., a Washington-based group that won the Pulitzer Prize for reporting on the millions of records of a Panamanian law firm. The release of that trove of documents led to the resignation of one prime minister last year and to the unmasking of the wealth of people close to President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

Americans — companies and people — dominate the list of clients. Past disclosures, such as the 2013 “Offshore Leaks” from two offshore incorporators in Singapore and the British Virgin Islands, the 2015 “Swiss Leaks” from a private Swiss bank owned by the British bank HSBC and another leak in 2016 from the Bahamas were dominated by clients not from the United States.

Of course, that doesn't mean the info is inaccurate. Just need to consider the source.

Like Brazile saying she was worried about her safety after the Seth Rich murder, but only because she thought the Russians were out to get her.

Finding the truth in all this is a perpetual exercise in picking peanuts out of poop.

ubers and filthys (rich / 1% / oligarchy) look at what we call nation states or countries as corporations. One way corporations keep their profits high is to keep wages low, cheapen benefits. Is why they're not interested in $15 minimums - or, hell, any minimum at all. Health Care? pffffff. Please. That costs money. Let them go to the ER. Social Security? That there socialism. Something capitalism won't tolerate.
Thing is, truth is, this is a War on the Poor. Bernie said it and he isn't wrong. And while the middle class can breathe a sigh of relief, they're next. Once they're done with the poor, kill off the poor, the middle class is next.
So, no, they don't care about fixing anything - they want to burn it down. Want us dead.

Victor Hugo explicitly said as much (it's buried in one of his essays larded all through Les Miserables). Of course Hugo didn't have any better solution than "everybody should be nicer to each other" and the more or less Voltairean advice to start in one's own backyard.

I'll admit I don't know much about Marx's philosophy, but where has communism ever been given an honest chance without being attacked by all means possible by the US and other Western oligarchies? Pointing at the USSR or Cuba doesn't hold water, because we viciously attacked them militarily, economically and in other ways as soon as they started.

That's not to say communism can ever work when selfish humans are involved, but it's never really been given a chance to succeed.

opium for guns or Cypress accounts in Afghanistan? We need a big shovel. Not particularly fond of Chris Mathews, but on occasions, he gets it right and, he knows, or is in position to know, with his deep background in the politic.

Looking forward to his new book about Kennedy, which brings me to thinking about the lost art of growing patricians, children born into the wealthy class raised and educated to serve the public good--and not self promote as their forefather's most certainly did in becoming so rich; what happened to that public responsibility to pay back a little for the gotten gains, the wealth?

Now, it's hell in a handbasket, pure unadulterated greed rallying the masses in overwhelming propaganda.

We've so much to undo, i've deep fears our ship, society, may not be righted.

Not to say, give up, just to double-down on these thoughts of your good essay.

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

Appleby checked the WikiLeaks database of U.S. diplomatic cables and learned that one of the U.S. Embassy’s contacts referred to Khangah as the “frontman” for a former politician who headed what the U.S. cables called “one of the most corrupt operations in Azerbaijan.” Appleby declined the work. knowledge. Result so far: Epstein was investigated and charged in one incident of soliciting a minor for prostitution. All he got was 13 months.

Flight logs show Bill Clinton flew on the “Lolita Express” 26 times.

The same goes for many other elite figures, Hollywood names, and celebrities.

None of this seems to interest the authorities.

If the authorities can ignore possible trafficking and sexual abuse of minors in Epstein’s circle — even in the face of all the fallout from Kevin Spacey and #MeToo — what chance is there of them investigating mere financial crimes?

Would LOVE it if the investigation and findings would lead to arrests and prosecutions and changes in regulations.

I have been under the impression that this type of sexual abuse came with a much higher prison sentence.
13 months is a joke and not a funny one on the women who had been assaulted at his parties.
But this is how the rich protect their friends, isn't it? What activities was Bill, Prince Andrews, Trump, Hillary and the many others that went to his parties at his home and his island?
13 months. Blacks who have had weed on them are still in prison and will be for years.
The statement, "I'm beyond disgusted" loses something when it's said so often.

from the guardian link:

Oxfam said the “stunning disclosures” meant Ross and other Trump allies named in the files, including chief economic adviser Gary Cohn and secretary of state Rex Tillerson, must recuse themselves from involvement in the president’s effort to overhaul the US tax code.

“Make no mistake, this is not just another salacious leak, this is a wake-up call,” said Gawain Kripke, Oxfam America’s policy director. “The vast and real human costs of this story must not be ignored. Billions of dollars are being stashed away in paradise instead of being invested in roads, schools, and hospitals.”

Focus in the US immediately fell on Ross, whose extensive links to Russian business had already raised questions about his choice for the cabinet. Congressman Eric Swallwell, a California Democrat who sits on the House intelligence committee the Ranking Member of the CIA Subcommittee of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said on Sunday: “This Putin connection was likely an asset for getting hired, not [a] liability.”

Gary Cohn Can’t Quit Trump. Literally. He’s Tried More Than Once.

Gary Cohn, Donald Trump’s national economic adviser, made his bones at Goldman Sachs by proving to be an exceptional risk manager. Famously, he was part of the small group of Goldman traders and senior executives who figured out in 2006 that a meltdown was looming in the housing market and who positioned Goldman, through a series of clever trades that became known inside the firm as “the big short,” to benefit mightily nearly two years later when the financial crisis hit with a vengeance. In 2007, while much of the rest of Wall Street was reeling from the crisis’s first shockwaves, Goldman was cleaning up, thanks to its decision to bet against the mortgage market. That year, the firm made nearly $18 billion in pre-tax earnings—a number it has never seen again—and the top five Goldman executives, Cohn included, split a whopping $322 million. Cohn’s personal take from that honeypot? $72.5 million

omfg ... ~shrug~
http://www.businessinsider.com/gary-cohn-donations-dodd-frank-2017-4

Prior to 2009, Cohn, the former Goldman Sachs president and COO, donated for more than a decade to Democratic candidates and groups, according to a database from the Center for Responsive Politics.

Among the Democratic recipients were Sen. Chuck Schumer, now the Senate minority leader, in 1997; a $10,000 donation to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 1998; donations to three different campaigns for Hillary Clinton in 2000, 2005, and 2007; a competing donation to Barack Obama in 2007; and two donations of $28,500 and $27,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in 2007 and 2008, respectively.

Major financial centers are being identified with metadata analysis.

We found that a handful of big countries – the Netherlands, the UK, Switzerland, Singapore and Ireland – serve as the world’s conduit OFCs. Together, these five conduits channel 47% of corporate offshore investment from tax havens, according to the data we analyzed.

The Netherlands leads the pack with 23%, followed by the UK (14%), Switzerland (6%), Singapore (2%) and Ireland (1%).

Each conduit jurisdiction is specialized both geographically and in industrial sectors. The Netherlands excels in holding companies, for example, while Luxembourg favors “administrative services”. Hong Kong’s geographic speciality lies in connecting to the British Virgin Islands and Taiwan.

Of 24 sink OFCs, 18 have a current or past dependence to the UK, including major tax havens such as the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands and Jersey. New territories with low or no corporate taxes are continuously emerging as sink OFCs, but, as our study shows, there are just a handful of conduit OFCs.

As long as the conduits remain in place the activities in financial sinks identified in Panama Papers, Bermuda Leaks and Paradise Papers will continue to shift around the globe.
