Open Thread - The Weekly Watch
President elect T-rump is the endless story and fixation this week. People hit the streets in protests. From my view, the energy would be better spent walking with the water protectors. I continue to think that Standing Rock is the moment for the movement. Around the world countries are reacting in different ways. There are a variety of opinions....we all know what that's like....everybody has one. And this Weekly Watch features a number of people and their take on ...

Clear last night, silvery moo-oon comes to mind
I have yet to have a killing frost, but a heavy browse on my tomato plants, just producing. Such is life. I may dare to blow the driveway, at least near the house. Batteries are charged. Post-concussion is acting up, sharp pains localized on my head to the staple mark region. I never saw pix of that, and they never shaved my head there. Got my first haircut in 5 months, one has doubts about going out in public with a black eye, another fall-down. And likely another concussion. Too old and wrong sex to play football now. Life is grand.
Enough watching-material for the day! I have to go out to buy garbage tags to put out regulated garbage tomorrow AM.

good morning rl
Still no rain here in the dustbowl, but plenty of leaves. I've started blowing them out of my roadside ditches in case it ever rains again.
Steady does it with a head injury .... go easy....no football!

A powerful earthquake struck New Zealand near the city of Christchurch on Sunday, with strong jolts felt over 120 miles away in the capital, Wellington, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The magnitude-7.4 quake struck just after midnight and was centered 57 miles northeast of Christchurch, according to the USGS.

Huh, I call Opposite Day! You know what I mean? Because I was looking at this other article about Peter Thiel, he is buying up California politicians (property) like crazy. It is disturbing. Not for billionaires, that's my motto. Oh well. Big money: Paypal co-founder’s $2B firm investing in marijuana

CA pot growing...
has been in limbo for awhile. One of my past students has been growing in CA the last few years. He voted against the prop. because he thought it created an opportunity of a corporate take over of production. I guess Thiel's actions are evidence.
I reckon it will be a cold day in hell when Alabama finally decriminalizes pot...they like using the law to imprison black folks and eliminating their voting rights.

Mitch McConnell is in the play as well re: MJ
For a while KY was the major hemp producer in the US. Now that tobacco is a frowned-upon crop he was all set to turn all those fields back to Cannabis production, giving new life to those fields. Without the slaves. Which reminds me: Does anyone know if Tobacco for cigars is still hand-cut? The entire plant used to be machete-cut and hung to dry. Think slaves.

My hope and prayer for President-elect Trump is that he is converted on the climate crisis. If a person really really grasps the scope of the issue, trivial bullshit falls by the wayside.
See what you think, and maybe someone out there can compose a better tweet!

to educate the Donald about climate change. Unfortunately I'm afraid he's more interested in his bottom line.
Climate is the issue to unite around, and Standing Rock is the focal point. (from my view anyway)

Chris Hedges: Under the political economy we have had imposed
on us, the middle class(so called) will continue to disappear and those with a high school education, or less, will sink even farther in poverty and hopelessness. It is our duty to first understand the dynamic of global monopoly capitalism so we don't get suckered into identity politics where the 1% splits workers into manageable factions to compete with one another instead of working to end "grow and die" capitalism. We should accept half measures but realize that's what they are and press forward toward system change to displace climate change.
How would the world be different if the Sierra Club never existed? There would be fewer parklands but pollution and exploitation would be the same.
African-Americans have had one of their own as president for eight years and what positive do they have to show for giving the Democrats 90% of their votes? Are their fewer blacks imprisoned? jobless? homeless?
The Democratic establishment talks about the Hispanic vote as if those who speak Spanish have the same aspirations and needs. Spanish speakers have lived in what is now the USA since at least the 1600s in parts of California, the southwest, and Florida. The Puerto Ricans who have left that colony to live on the east coast are Hispanics but have little in common with the above people. The same can be said for Mexican Americans; those escaping murderous regimes in El Salvador and Guatemala and Honduras; and the Cubans who left after the Cuban revolution.
Chris Hedges seems to have a good grasp of the global problem and I look forward to reading his essays.

I was really pissed at Chris Hedges
when he said Bernie would end up betraying us (something to this effect). And that was last fall, just as Bernie was ramping up.
Turns out I owe Hedges an apology. I don't think anyone has a better grasp on what is going down than Chris.

SNL: I Told The Truth. I Didn't Come To Fool Ya.
That line from Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" fell a little flat for me. I watched the open to SNL last night expecting to see Baldwin's Trump taking a victory lap. What I got instead was Kate McKinnon's Hillary singing a soulful rendition of Hallelujah.
McKinnon is quite a good singer and can tickle the ivories, who knew. But I didn't buy the message. That song is sooooo the polar opposite of Hillary. Anyway, for the Hillary fans in the house (is there even one?), here's the video. Watch, Weep and Heal.
Lookout, cudos on the essay today. Lot's of great links and loved the cartoons.

Hi CoE
Kate does a great Hellery. I love the way she does her eyes when she's playing the $hill.
Thanks for the clip, and glad you liked today's post. I have a feeling we'll get many funny T-rump cartoons as we progress (or is that regress?).

It's pretty common for these folks to have training
across multiple disciplines in the performing arts -- this is what they are about. The same kids who are in the high school play are in the high school musical, and take dancing lessons and piano lessons. (Consider Jimmy Fallon's brilliant mimicry of Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Dylan, right down to their harmonica sound ...)
Regardless -- and I'm not an adept critic of vocal performance -- I believe she is quite literally "flat" for much of the song. I'd also say that her practical range is only about an octave, maybe an octave and a half. Interestingly, she "chooses" to go low at a lyric where most vocalists go high.
The bottom line is that I can sing that song a lot better than she can, and nobody has ever paid to hear me do it.
She does appear to be brokenhearted for reals.
By contrast, a friend of mine -- one of my oldest, best friends -- was unexpectedly at this unexpected performance ("unexpectedly" because at the last minute some friends told him they had an extra ticket; "unexpected" because Lang was substituting for Neil Young, who was ill), which in my opinion far outshines all other available renditions, including others by Lang herself:

the story is that when
Jeff BuckleyJohn Cale heard the song and wanted to record it, he got Cohen's phone number and contacted him directly to ask for a copy of the lyrics, to make sure he got them right. Cohen offered to fax them over. The next thingBuckleyCale knows, his fax machine starts spewing page after page after page. The last time I tried, I only found

PS -- she sings 4 verses in this performance.
It's worth noting that the crowd that is going effin nuts by the end was initially very disappointed that Young wasn't there. He has only performed in Winnipeg a handful of times since he bailed on the 'Peg, headed down east, and then drove his hearse to LA. His scheduled performance was expected to be the highlight of the Junos.

I was appalled this morning
When I read an old article and Leonard Cohen was saying he was a great admirer of Hillary. It was 1992, so I will forgive him; however, I already hated her in 1992 and I wonder how people were taken in by all that sleaziness.

Is Soros indeed the funding source of Black lives matter and Move on? Either way this activist from Standing Rock has an interesting story.
