Catching Up isn't Hard to Do

Open Thread Image.jpg

After a week away from the news, I thought it might be a challenge to catch up to the current cycle. I'm reminded of a line from John Prine's "Hello in There"...all the news just seems to repeat itself like some forgotten dream that we've both seen. Russia continues to advance in Ukraine, the Palestinians are still being starved and killed (despite Bibi's denial), Tariffs are being used like sanctions to try to control other countries and impact BRICS+, the US continues to harass Iran and China...the only thing new was the Thai-Cambodia conflict which seems to have calmed down. The US (and global) economy seems to be a ticking time bomb designed to usher in "Stablecoins".

catching-up-on-news-epic-handshake-meme-2019939300.jpg

Let's start with some news from East Asia...
China Will NOT Be Bullied Into US Trade Deal + Thailand-Cambodia Conflict Explained| Carl Zha

(35 min) After two days of trade talks, Beijing says the U.S. and China have agreed to extend their tariff truce, but now U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is saying, “our Chinese counterparts have jumped the gun a little,” and insisting it’s still up to President Trump to decide whether to go back to triple-digit tariffs.
Carl Zha noted that while Trump wants to bully every country into a trade deal, he’s not going to be able to do that with China, especially when Beijing has the rare earth minerals the U.S. Military needs (and both sides know it).
(@ ~ 11 min) We also discussed the recent border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, as China and Malaysia lead the ASEAN group’s push for peace, and the latest conflict in Southeast Asia is much more complicated than it seems.

De-Dollarization Is Real – Brazil Just PROVED It (10 min)
The U.S.-Brazil relationship is under pressure—and a digital payment system called Pix is at the center of the storm. In this video, we break down why Washington is concerned about Brazil’s Pix platform, how it threatens the dominance of the U.S. dollar, and why this could mark a major turning point in the global financial order.
Pix, launched by Brazil’s central bank, is fast, free, and doesn’t rely on the U.S. dollar. It's already used by over 76% of Brazilians, empowering unbanked citizens while challenging U.S.-based financial systems like Visa and Mastercard. But is Pix just about financial inclusion—or something much bigger?
In this video, we cover:

U.S. tariffs and sanctions on Brazil

US President Trump has rattled Washington’s ties with New Delhi to an unexpected degree. Countries, including, India were prepared for rough diplomatic weather after Trump won his second term, but did not anticipate the kind of onslaught he has unleashed on the global system and diplomatic norms. Trump’s latest attack on India and the BRICS countries explains this underlying dynamic. The BRICS aspire to play a greater political, economic and financial role in global affairs. This aspiration is based on shifts of economic and concomitant political and financial power towards the so-called emerging powers or middle-income countries. BRICS countries have already begun to use their national currencies in trading with each other as much as possible. The use of draconian financial sanctions on Russia by the West has accelerated this process.

10 or 12 Days, Then What? (Larry Johnson)
Donald Trump made another move in his feckless game of global checkers today in Scotland, with the announcement that he is giving Russia a new, much shorter deadline of ten days to end the war in Ukraine. Trump warned that if President Vladimir Putin does not reach a deal by around August 7–9, the US will impose new sanctions and “severe tariffs” on Russia and countries supporting its war effort. Trump’s new deadline elicited a collective yawn in Moscow.

Putin's response to Trump's threats

(32 sec)

By now, it must be kind of obvious that Mr. Putin of Russia was staged-up into a demon for the convenience of Hillary Clinton — resulting in a decade of deformed US foreign relations that has dragged us to the edge of a third world war. Nice work, Democratic Party! I will proffer a harsh truth to you: the best outcome in Ukraine would be for Russia to win the war as expeditiously as possible, neutralize and disarm the place, change-out its illegitimate government, and let it revert to being the frontier backwater it was for eight decades previous, when it was not a problem for the other nations of the region. Mr. Putin has put up with our country’s psychotic nonsense with remarkable patience. The idea that he seeks to conquer western Europe was a preposterous confection of the neocon crazies in our State Department and Intel “community.”

In a bombshell development that should rattle every American, newly declassified documents confirm what conservatives have said all along: the Trump-Russia collusion narrative wasn’t just baseless; it was a deliberate political hit job that the highest levels of the Obama administration orchestrated, with Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign at the helm and the FBI eagerly playing along. But it gets worse. Buried in a classified annex to John Durham’s report, which is finally seeing the light of day after the Biden administration kept it under wraps, are explosive allegations that the FBI may have been doing George Soros’ bidding during Operation Crossfire Hurricane.

None the less the US keeps rattling their sabres.

Epstein EXPOSED: Trump, Mossad & The Elite’s Dark Secrets (14 min)

I'll close with another John Prine line...pretty good, not bad, I can't complain, but actually everything is about the same. I can complain about the news, but it will not accomplish a thing. Trump has NOT sought peace, in fact he's added to US aggression with stunts like bombing Yemen and Iran...and now sending more weapons and another 55 billion to Ukraine. Will he lose his base? I bet he loses many of them. I look for a midterm disaster for the GOP, but we'll see what we see... lots of water to pass under the bridge between now and then.

I hope you all had a good week. I played catch up on both the chores and the news. I'm sure I missed several stories which I hope you'll share in the comments below. Have a great Sunday!

I try to root myself in this holler...tied to the garden, the orchard, and the maturing forest that surrounds us. After Trumps election Jimmy Dore often said I'm hopeful, but I have no faith. I too wanted Trump to be a peace president, but alas he has failed.

Expecting the worse at least doesn't deliver disappointment.

We got errands run yesterday, so I am free today to explore your amazing WW content.
I am thinking more and more about retiring. AI is changing the legal profession, and not in a good way. Any young person thinking about attending law school must face the reality that there will be fewer and fewer employment opportunities in the future.
Retirement will look like this: I create a website, announce my areas of practice as deed and will prep. No office needed, no staff, just a software program that will pay for itself for 2 months with one client hiring me to produce one document. 3 documents will pay for the annual continuing legal ed courses I am required to take.
Trump could have flushed out the Russiagate hoax on Day 1. Perhaps the MIC needed to push the Putin Bad Guy theory to sell weapons to Ukraine. At any rate, it dominates the MSM, while there is no mention of the Epstein Files. A fortunate coincidence.
Well, off into the war news I go, dear friend! Thanks so much for your WW!

Very good one indeed. I don't understand why he backs off at the end where he says, "I never doubted that in his mind, he thinks he's being sincere." The second part is right, "he just doesn't understand what he's dealing with." Otherwise, the colonel's presentation is very cogent, incisive, insightful etc. I just don't understand that "sincere" observation. There's nothing sincere about him, never has been. He's an act.

Woody wrote a song about Trump's Dad, a slumlord...

Old Man Trump

I suppose that Old Man Trump knows just how much racial hate
He stirred up in that bloodpot of human hearts
When he drawed that color line
Here at his Beach Haven family project

Beach Haven ain't my home!
No, I just can't pay this rent!
My money's down the drain,
And my soul is badly bent!
Beach Haven is Trump’s Tower
Where no black folks come to roam,
No, no, Old Man Trump!
Old Beach Haven ain't my home!

I'm calling out my welcome to you and your man both
Welcoming you here to Beach Haven
To love in any way you please and to have some kind of a decent place
To have your kids raised up in.

Beach Haven ain't my home!
No, I just can't pay this rent!
My money's down the drain,
And my soul is badly bent!
Beach Haven is Trump’s Tower
Where no black folks come to roam,
No, no, Old Man Trump!
Old Beach Haven ain't my home!

Here's a version...

In December 1950, Woody Guthrie moved to an apartment building in Brooklyn – Beach Haven Apartments. His landlord: Fred Trump, father of Donald Trump.

Woody Guthrie wrote these lyrics in 1951, and 65 years later, the Missin' Cousins, a County-Western music group from Oakland California, present a recording of these new lyrics to I Ain't Got No Home in this World Anymore.

Fred Trump used US government millions to build post-war public housing, then became the landlord, and moved people of color out of their housing and neighborhoods. He kept people of color out of of his properties through racial codes, maintaining whites only housing policy into the early 1970's.

Old Man Trump made his millions creating the postwar racial codes that have produced the racist inequality that lives through this day.

In his two years at Beach Haven, Woody Guthrie witnessed Old Man Trump’s racist practices, and wrote some of his most bitter songs and lyrics, including a re-write of "I Ain't Got No Home in this World Anymore" aimed directly at Old Man Trump

I haven't found Woody singing it.

So the Don comes by it honestly.

.... 90-day pause in the China negotiations, because China is standing firm on matching retaliatory tarrifs and embargoes. The current 90-day pause in the US Tariff War attacks on China expires in the next few days. Of course, a new pause will mean that the US defense and airlines industries, among others, will grind to an immediate halt without China's rare earth minerals and magnets in the supply chain..

But that's not what the US War on China is all about. It is a war against multipolar rivals declared by a group of US psychopaths, who have constructed their own reality where the US is already the Supreme Ruler of the World — and the US will not tolerate disobedience. This is what inspired Trump's hasty Nuclear Submarine brinksmanship threat against Russia. The US must show its Supreme Strength and be willing to destroy any nation that does not obey US demands. The Russophobia Neocons who run US international affairs, instantly threatened Russia with an attack, because Russia is no longer interested in another bogus peace negotiations with the militant NAZIs of Ukraine — who have continued attacking and exterminating the Russian occupants of east Ukraine.

I find the insights of the brilliant geopolitical journalists — Ben Norton, Danny Haiphong, and Brian Berletic — particularly useful in matters like these (below). This time, they came together because the US has pushed itself to the brink of an internal economic catastrophe with a global tariff war, which will further impoverish the US population. Are any US allies planning to chain themselves to the ignorant and deeply insane US Administration, and plunge alongside the US, into the abyss? Our Democracy of Dunces has consigned the American people to go wherever Trump goes — and pick up the entire tab.

....managed to screw up most of the world before their horrid Empire mostly died. It turns out that every ongoing border skirmish in the world — even those that flare up today — is caused by borders that the British Empire (of Elites) drew, in their arrogance and ignorance. Naturally, that impacted India, Syria, Sudan, China, Libya, Jordan, Turkey, and many more current victims, including the border drawn between Russia and Ukraine in 1997. There are so many things that are not taught in US schools, especially economics.

[Meade - 1906 - Written by Marshall P. Locke Charles Tyner]
1st. Recorded 6 September 1928 by Harry McClintock
[Verse 1]
One evening as the sun went down
And the jungle fire was burning
Down the track came a hobo hikin'
And he said, "Boys, I'm not turning
I'm headed for a land that's far away
Beside the crystal fountains
So come with me, we'll go and see
The Big Rock Candy Mountains"

[Verse 2]
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
There's a land that's fair and bright
Where the handouts grow on bushes
And you sleep out every night
Where the boxcars all are empty
And the sun shines every day
On the birds and the bees and the cigarette trees
The lemonade springs where the bluebird sings
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

[Verse 3]
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
All the cops have wooden legs
And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth
And the hens lay soft-boiled eggs
The farmers' trees are full of fruit
And the barns are full of hay
Oh, I'm bound to go where there ain't no snow
Where the rain don't fall, the wind don't blow
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

[Verse 4]
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
You never change your socks
And the little streams of alcohol
Come trickling down the rocks
The brakemen have to tip their hats
And the railroad bulls are blind
There's a lake of stew and of whiskey too
You can paddle all around them in a big canoe
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

[Verse 5]
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
The jails are made of tin
And you can walk right out again
As soon as you are in
There ain't no short-handled shovels
No axes, saws, or picks
I'm a-going to stay where you sleep all day
Where they hung the Jerk that invented work
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

[Outro]
I'll see you all this coming fall
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

This is the only vintage recording on "Oh Brother Where Art Thou". My friend Norman Blake had three cuts on that best selling CD. That allowed him a deserved retirement.

Y'all have a good evening!

There is an outbreak of chikungunya in Guangdong Province, China. Most cases have been reported in Foshan city (see map).
Mosquitoes spread the virus that causes chikungunya.
You can protect yourself by preventing mosquito bites, which includes using insect repellent; wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants; and staying in places with air conditioning or that have screens on the windows and doors.
Vaccination is recommended for travelers who are visiting an area with a chikungunya outbreak. Two chikungunya vaccines are approved for use in the United States.

The vaccines of course pose some risks, clinicians are advised.

Not trying to be an alarmist. This virus doesn't seem especially dangerous, except maybe to newborn, and elderly, or people with co morbidities. I just heard of this on a Korean news program.
