No Action

First time I went to Las Vegas, me and a college friend drove down there from Olympia, WA on the way to Oklahoma City via Palm Springs, CA (but I've never been to Spain). I remember we decided to stand around and study the craps tables for awhile until we figured out how to play. After deciding we had learned enough to lose money, we placed our bets. Two bucks, on red. The dealer took a quick look at our bets and plainly stated, "no action".

Two bucks, no action.

That's what's happening now relative to opposition to the ruling class. No action. There are some bets being placed but they're not impressing the dealer.

Here we are coming off an election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, amazingly, and things seem to have settled into an off election year malaise of bitching, moaning and following the fucking red ball our rulers manipulate us into following. "Did you see what happened today? Did you hear what they said today? I can't wait to see and hear what they do tomorrow."

There's no talk of revolution. There doesn't even seem to be any desire for revolution. Not a real revolution, one that takes their fucking power away and gives it to us. There's this bullshit talk about "resistance" and "justice" but it's all related to electing more and better politicians. Fuck that. Nobody wants to make their own decisions. God forbid anyone would have to vote for or against going to war. We Land of the Brave Americans NEED rich fucking politicians to make those decisions for us. We elect them because they're smarter than the rest of us and as soon as they get into Congress, they are obviously much more qualified than any of us to make those decisions.

Like my congressional representative here in Southwest Washington (WA-03), Jaime Herrera Beutler. She was elected in 2011 at the age of 33 as a tea party republican and since then has voted yes on every defense budget increase, military action and sanction act she could get her stupid little hands on. But she's smarter and better able to make these decisions than the rest of us, right?

Shit. This is a sick national political system. It's a fraud, it's ridiculous, it's fucking stupid.

Collectively I guess it has to be true, we get what we deserve. Hate to admit that but everything else is just an excuse.

It's not hard to see what's going to happen here. The republicans hold the House and Senate and the Presidency. Everything will be channeled toward the 2018 election where the duopoly will enact their special brand of kabuki theater to make the public think their futures depend on electing more democratic or republican politicians. Then it will be on to the BIG 2020 presidential election, where Donald Trump will seek reelection over more democratic party challengers who promise they will be different.

During that time the rich will get more rich, the poor will get more poor, the security state will increase, wars will continue, climate change will go unopposed and Serfs will remain Serfs.

And we still won't live in a democracy.

Bet on it.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Another resistance movement must be formed to oppose the duopoly of the republican and democratic parties. We cannot allow them to make it about them, we have to make it about us. We have to tell them that we know their game and it's over. The time is ripe as hell for it, the overall participation rate in the national U.S. elections has steadily eroded to historically low levels. This next election promises more of the same. It's imperative this farce is finally opposed on a major scale and demands to end this oligarchy are made.

Revolution is the only way.

I've been saying it since Dubya was in, not yet realizing the screwing we got from Bubba. The Mad Bomber socked it to us and now we have Herr Drumpf. When your leaders have cartoon names, it's time to change the system.

Revolution is the only way.

I thought the people were waking up, this time. But, you are correct, they're getting back to their jobs and lives. We are not paid enough so we have to struggle and not pay attention. The NBA finals are on and baseball has begun. Summer vacation is starting. We are lulled back into our stupor. It's time to wake them back up.

Revolution is the only way.

@Raggedy Ann First and foremost we have to stop this criminal mafia at the top. What they're doing and have done is at the top of the list in crimes against humanity. I really think there has to be a counter narrative to this next election, a revolution type narrative against the duopoly. Like you said, wake them up, shake things up.

The problem, as I see it, is getting the message out. I have recently formed the opinion that we need to learn to be superior propagandists to the creatures of the MSM. They have the bucks and horsepower. We have the numbers. And, I would like to think, the imagination.

Thanks for sharing this, Big Al. I haven't been posting of late, have turned in on myself, partly because of these issues. What little social interactions I've been having all turn on "What Donald Fucked Up Today". Tired of this superficial shit. EITHER of the two choices that were offered by the Duopoly would have been hell. It doesn't change a damned thing. -And ZERO fucking discussion about the Democrats committing an act of domestic nuclear terrorism through threatening to start a war with a nuclear-armed power, for the sole purpose of distracting people from the Democratic Party's crimes and stupidity. ROOSHINS ROOSHINS ROOSHINS 24-fucking-7, and still NO discussion about Dem and MSM collusion in helping DJT get enough sympathetic airtime that it could have gotten Ed Gein elected. All of which was discussed in those silly, unimportant, leaked bloody emails, which no Good American should actually get off their ass and READ.

Anyway, I probably am not really finished being a hermit quite yet. I suspect my Donkey-Rage will last until I die, but I need to calm down to the point where I'm not screaming at folks who are an unwitting part of the MSM's echo-chamber.

Starting a Third Party is not the answer, though. I've thought long and hard about that. It SOUNDS so do-able, and it has tons of "intellectual sexiness" to it, but... The Donkelphants have already booby-trapped that road with every nasty-assed surprise known to mankind. We need a different way forward, I think. Just haven't figured one out yet. If I get a brainstorm I'll post it.

Unabashed Liberal's picture

US populace remains quite comfortable--and our bipartisan neoliberal lawmakers have ensured as much--I honestly don't expect that a movement will build that can take down the status quo.

I've seen quite a bit of discussion of this in magazines such as Foreign Policy. Remember, when the 'Arab Spring' took off--everybody was pretty hard up--not just the middle and lower classes.

Here in the US, living standards are still too comfortable for many folks to believe that a (peaceful) revolution is in order. IOW, they are too concerned about the possible loss of their own prosperity, to want to engage in a true (peaceful) revolution. This would likely include many in the professional class, especially dual-professional couples.

Then, there are those folks who are not particularly well off, but, they're reluctant to upset the proverbial apple cart since the end result 'could be' a meaningful loss of what little privilege, or prestige, they currently enjoy--even though they feel that they are constantly losing ground.

Of course, there are always those folks who are hyper-cautious by nature--which can lead to risk aversion, regardless of the particular individuals' circumstances--financial, or otherwise.

According to FP magazine, our political and financial elites aren't threatened by the masses, in general, because they realize that they are too busy just trying to get by, to engage in any direct actions of consequence.

I wish I had the answers, but I don't. But, hey--thanks for the essay!

@Unabashed Liberal @Unabashed Liberal 1/2 the country is poor. Literally poor. That doesn't include the people who aren't poor, but who are living paycheck to paycheck with no savings and too much debt.

Beyond that, there's a lot of other forms of discomfort that are not directly pertinent to money and whether or not you're being shot at currently. And those discomforts are so intense that we're getting record suicide numbers in some demographics. We have a suicide spike going. Last year, during the election, the American Psychological Association had to come up with guidelines for dealing with the campaigns, because it was causing so much mental agony.

People are not comfortable, unless by that you mean they are sufficiently comfortable that they prefer living to dying. And even that is not, given the suicide spike, necessarily true.

Perhaps we should be asking, why are Americans choosing to kill themselves rather than revolt?

As for deserving what we get, a position that pops up fairly regularly around here, I'd like to see some historical examples of revolutions that began with people saying "We deserve what we get."

Self-flagellation--or, alternatively, excoriating the people for their moral unworthiness--doesn't tend to be an attitude often assumed by revolutionaries, at least not the ones I've read about, though I'm willing to learn. It is, however, quite frequently found in religious discourse.

of Americans are falling behind, especially financially. For about two years, the following article was part if my DKos signature line,

AP December 15, 2011, 12:55 PM

Census data: Half of U.S. poor or low income

WASHINGTON - Squeezed by rising living costs, a record number of Americans — nearly 1 in 2 — have fallen into poverty or are scraping by on earnings that classify them as low income.

The latest census data depict a middle class that's shrinking as unemployment stays high and the government's safety net frays. The new numbers follow years of stagnating wages for the middle class that have hurt millions of workers and families. . . .

So, thanks for bringing that factoid up--I may incorporate that piece into a future sign line.

And, it wasn't my intention to imply that 'we get what we deserve.'

I think quite the opposite, actually. But, I do believe that shaking up the status quo will necessitate a great deal of sacrifice on the part of all who wish to achieve the changes that are often discussed--it won't be an easy task. IOW, a peaceful societal revolution will not likely come about without a significant degree of displacement and/or discomfort for many, if not most, folks. And, IMO, it's constructive to face that hard truth or reality.

While I don't consider myself to be at all reckless, I probably have a bit less aversion to risk (than many) because of my own personal history--winning a federal suit as a very young person, just entering the federal bureaucracy. As a result, I believe that I have a pretty good understanding of the personal costs of fighting a powerful entrenched institution, which should never be underestimated.

At any rate, I'm all in for changing the political status quo, therefore, improving our lives. Since Mr M's putting in for retirement shortly, I'm not likely going to be able to get real involved in the effort, since we're preparing to relocate. But, in no way did I mean to belittle the idea, or discourage anyone from believing that a committed group of folks can bring about major societal change/reform. History has taught us otherwise. And, if I can't do anything else, I'll gladly cheer the effort from the sidelines! Wink

Crazy people playing games with our lives. This is not a video game, or a teevee show, this is actual people trying to live a life, while Herr Drumpf and his warlords bang the nuclear war drum.

I'm going to say this in all caps to get my feeling across: AMERICANS MUST STOP JOINING THE MILITARY! We must stop participating in making their wildest dreams come true at the expense of our lives! We must start pressing this message. It's a first step in stopping the madness.

Look at the Caitlin Johnstone quote in my sig line - is that what it will take for folks to wake up? It might be too late by then. Revolution must begin long before.

@mhagle in the world and just crushing it is pretty glib. I would love to have solar panels on my roof but I can't afford it. Same with moving to France or Ecuador. How did this urban farmer get the bucks to equip his farm? How can a person immigrate legally with no assets? Become a refugee? His farm looks suburban to me. I live in a city where urban 'density' is being rammed down our throats. Solar power is expensive here. Sure you can cut a deal with Portland General Electric wherein over time you will get a rebate but you still have to pay upfront for the installation. Lot's of affluent professionals here have gone solar.

So excuse me while I go try to finally finish my veggie garden planting in a world where seasons do not exist. I threw out my planting guide as it just confuses both me and the vegetables. A green house? Yeah sounds great but even getting the CU to refinance my house for needed repairs is an endless nightmare of bureaucratic hoops. Being the change you want to see isn't always possible. We all do the best we can but when people are living in survival mode it's a bit much to get shouted at by guys like this 'urban farmer'.

he dares to talk like this to some "brothers" in the "hood" or simply to normal people, who can't buy even a tiny piece of land and certainly not a house on it in an urban neighborhood or suburban neighborhood.

There are some "farmers" on Hawaii my son got to know, all of them rich investors, who were able to buy 800 000,00 plus dollar lots with 600,000.00 dollar farms, err mansions on it and capable to "play" farmer. They hire the homeless to tend their vegetables and fruits and often are even too lazy to sell them or give them away to food banks. They are that rich and that lazy and smart talking about living self-sufficiently and self-sustaining and are full of themselves.
