afternoon folks...

i'm off for a long weekend to take the missus to see her favorite 70's band, yes.

i'll catch up with you all when i can.

I'm gratified that Yes is still together and touring!

I'm also a fan of the solo career of Yes' keyboardist, Rick Wakeman:

A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.

@divineorder the woodpeckers made a granary of the utility pole here, they peck out vertical strips instead of round holes, and stuff 'em full of acorns for "later" but none are too busy yet, it's early. I really love it when they pal around three or four together and make that eh eh eh eh! sound like their laughing or something. Hooligans.

Nothing beats a Pileated for bark removal, very efficient. I don't eat the bugs though, not yet.

Evelyn Woodhead was a gift from one day helping clear a fallen oak, a grandmother tree, she had a bunch of tiny burls and they were free. Sometimes I trim the "suckers" from the redwoods across the street and make tiny peace signs. Thinking about basket weaving now ... crazy like.

@eyo

thanks for both the very interesting photos, and conversation.

I'm quite a 'bird lover,' but have never heard of the Acorn Woodpecker. Which is why I posted the link, below, for other clueless folks like me. Wink

Acorn Woodpecker (Wikipedia)

The Acorn Woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus) is a medium-sized woodpecker, 21 cm (8.3 in) long, with an average weight of 85 g (3.0 oz). . . .

Food and homes

Acorn Woodpeckers, as their name implies, depend heavily on acorns for food. In some parts of their range (e.g., California), the woodpeckers create granaries or "acorn trees" by drilling holes in dead trees, dead branches, telephone poles, and wooden buildings. The woodpeckers then collect acorns and find a hole that is just the right size for the acorn. As acorns dry out, they are moved to smaller holes and granary maintenance requires a significant amount of the bird's time. They also feed on insects, sap, and fruit.

Have a nice weekend!

I thought kindly of you the other day giving my laundry quarters to Matthew and his gf and their dog Meatball. I gave Matthew a hug and Meatball a scritch, he's a smiler. gf wouldn't make eye contact, I know what it's like. They were traveling from Pelosi's district in Napa, heading north to Oregon. Walking their bicycles. I feel sorry for Oregon right now, and other border states. We are the "move along" place now I guess, like deck chairs on the Titanic, keep moving. They are at the encampment by the river until they're not. Not generating a "Transient" tax for the Chamber of Commerce those without shelter are unwelcome here but for charity good feelz, Move Along.

Jakkalbessie and I went to that meeting hosted by New Energy Economy last night at the beautiful Santa Fe Community College solar powered campus really rocked! Impressive well thought out planning, and already lots of court , political, and social action and accomplishments. Already working on the next governor's race !

Here's a taste from the website: http://www.newenergyeconomy.org/pnm_replacement_power

Here's a vid from their website, really impressed with what is being accomplished with native Americans as well as with the public utility committee and the Supreme Court! Long way to go of course but holding PNM to account. Even got the local city council here to 100% solar along with the new airport renovations.

@divineorder

that there's a chance that Seema Verma might be Price's replacement. Rumor has it that she'd be worse than he was. I've seen articles about her 'luv' of catastrophic insurance plans, etc. Guess time will tell.

Seema Verma

Soon after his election victory, in November 2016, Trump announced Indian American Dr. Seema Verma as the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Verma took charge on March 14, 2017.

Verma played a significant role in drafting Trumpcare or the Obamacare Repeal and Replace bill.

Before her induction into the Trump administration, Verma was the CEO of a health policy consulting firm SVS Inc, a firm she founded.

There she was the architect of Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP), which has been billed as the country’s first consumer-director Medicaid program. The health insurance program, designed for people with low income, requires participants to pay into a health savings account and has high deductibles.

Just what Medicaid beneficiaries need! Those plans, called CDHPs, were originially designed for healthy and/or wealthy folks--not for some of the lowest income and most economically vulnerable Americans.

BTW, Parry Murray has agreed to just this type of plan (with Alexander of the Senate HELP Committee). I'll post the link when the final deal that they've reached, becomes available. The Hill had a piece about their tentative agreement last night/early this morning. It's called 'Copper Plans.' Oh, a number of Conservadems ran on implementing these plans in 2014--several of whom bit the dust that election cycle (Pryor, Landrieu, Begich).

You and JB have a great weekend!

Fences For Fido

When a dog is unchained, a transformation begins.

It starts with what we call “zoomies:” The running, jumping, exuberant joy our Fidos display once unchained – many for the first time in years.

That visible happiness puts smiles on the faces of our volunteers and most importantly, on the faces of our client families who through this process being to connect with their pets in a more meaningful way.

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
Yes there is an answer to this and no fair looking it up.

Here's another one that my grandma used to ask me.

How long is a China man? How long is his name?
This one is tricky and not fair.

I will check back to see if anyone knows the answers.

have a very lovely evening, Joe! Today was so beautiful, that we had a change in plans, and traveled east toward the mountains to see 'the colors.' (A little early, but, heh, it was still a very lovely drive.) This is so much our favorite time of the year!

For those who are wondering, Patty Murray looks to be selling out, as expected.

Senators zero in on deal to stabilize ObamaCare markets

By Peter Sullivan - 09/28/17 04:16 PM EDT

Just days after Republicans put their hopes of repealing ObamaCare on ice, leaders of the Senate Health Committee are getting closer to a bipartisan deal aimed at stabilizing the health-care law’s markets. . . .

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), the chairman of the panel, and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), the top Democrat, are negotiating the deal. Alexander and Murray met Wednesday night. . . .

Yet there is also pressure from business groups, insurers and consumers to make fixes to ObamaCare, and lobbyists and aides familiar with the talks also said a deal is close.

A Senate Democratic aide said talks are “coming along,” and having a deal this week “isn’t out of the question.”

Lobbyists said that elements of the deal being discussed include allowing ObamaCare enrollees to buy “copper plans,” which are cheaper, less generous insurance plans that currently only people under age 30 can buy.

An expansion of waivers currently in ObamaCare that allow states to innovate and change regulations are also said to be part of the potential deal, though it is not clear how far those waiver changes will go.

Those provisions are both Republican requests.

The main provision for Democrats would be funding for key ObamaCare payments known as cost-sharing reductions, which President Trump has threatened to cancel in a bid to make the health-care law “implode.” . . .

If this deal passes, I will put the terms in a signature line, and Tweet them ad nauseum, since these are the very terms that our crack corporatist press corp was screaming would end the world as we know it, if the Republican bill passed.

(Of course, that Bill did include an additional reform that would indeed have been a disaster to millions of Medicaid beneficiaries--block granting the program to the States.)

Still, if Murray does allow Copper Plans, that pernicious reform will destroy insurance for millions of these folks--assuming that most of the beneficiaries wouldn't be able to come up with thousands of dollars for the plan deductible, and various OOP cost.

Hey, I expect that I'll have to check in on weekends for a while. In addition to all that I've already got on my plate in the coming months, agreed to join a County Shelter Board (for what time we've got left). They are in the midst of a operational/financial crisis, so it's the least that I can do (to try to help out). I'm hoping that some of what we learned (in TN) regarding fundraising efforts, and building community support for the local government-funded shelter, might help these other folks out. Of course, it didn't hurt that our shelter was bequeathed a quarter of a million dollars, in addition to our local fundraising efforts. Today, our University town has an absolutely gorgeous state-of-the-art facility, or 'campus.' Wink The new County Shelter doesn't even resemble the one that two of our fur babies were adopted from (the old County Shelter). That would include 'Biggun,' our beloved Terrier-Mix, and, of course, our sweet boy, 'Mister B.'

explains in this video, why for heavens sake don't we push for it.
Making the Electoral College Irrelevant

The effort is known as the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. If your state hasn’t yet joined on, make sure it does.

What do you think, is it worth to push for that? I hate your Electoral College. That's the first time I read a suggestion to make it at least a little bit, very little, but still better than what you have right now.
