Can we bottle this NYC Initiative?
I wake up to my news feed to find this...Magic?
NYC Mayor Guarantees Comprehensive Health Care for All in Historic Surprise Announcement
"This is the city paying for direct comprehensive care (not just ERs) for people who can't afford it, or can't get comprehensive Medicaid — including 300,000 undocumented New Yorkers," spokesman Eric Phillips tweeted.
New Yorkers will be able to access the program through the city's website or simply by calling 311. There will be no tax hikes to fund it, the mayor said.
"The programs will include customer-friendly call lines to help New Yorkers — regardless of their insurance — make appointments with general practitioners, cardiologists, pediatricians, gynecologists and a full spectrum of health care services," his office said in a release.
NYC Care is expected to launch in the Bronx this summer and be available in the other four boroughs in 2021, the release said.
It'll cost at least $100 million, according to the release.
I'm an English Major so I have to look this math stuff up. The Google tells me that (2017) there are 8.6 million people in NYC 1.7 million living at or below the poverty line. These numbers of course do not include undocumented who are also to be covered somehow.
If I understand their statement "this is not health insurance". So "paying directly" means they are going to pay the list price for services for Dr.s, Hospitals, Operations, Procedures, Long term care, medicine etc!??
How does the city pay for over a million people for $100,000 and "it won't raise taxes"!??

like you, i thought the math seemed improbable.
in fact, before i read your skeptical analysis, i was going to make fun of you for being so excited about this after having posted a few things hating on the high-tax blue states.
it took some looking around to find an article that provided the details, but they appear to be this.
A. Many/most of the 600K people who are going to be covered by this plan are already eligible, by law, to be treated on the city's dime at emergency rooms.
B. The new plan is expected to replace most of that expensive ER treatment with more effective and efficient primary care treatment. Presumably, there will also be long-term savings because conditions will get treated before they've become so serious that they require hospitalization or whatever.
C. The $100,000,000 is the net cost of replacing the current inefficient and stupid ER-based system with the new NYC-Care system, presumably because a whole lot more people will be getting care -- but less expensive care.
So, yeah, I can't testify to the quality of their estimates, but at least it doesn't sound like fairy dust.

i guess i should also note that this is something
us lefties have been saying for years: That the cost of a Single-Payer system of health care might seem high (since, of course, it means that millions of people who don't ever go to the doctor suddenly will), it's less expensive to society overall than taking care of people after they've become so sick that they need hyper-expensive care.
We'll see how it all plays out, I guess.

Can you link the article for me?
I'm always too snarky by nature.
This is the problem with issuing policy by press release. Everything looks like bullshit.

NY Daily News has an extensive article
right here. It's more detailed than the one I read earlier this afternoon -- clearly the press are still catching up with the story.
One important note is that the health care will not be free for everyone -- it will be priced on a sliding scale. They're calling it a "public option".
Another is that half the target population for the program are undocumented immigrants, and they are targets for the program explicitly because they cannot sign up for ACA, but they are entitled to be treated if they show up at the ER.

NYT has a write up too
De Blasio Unveils Health Care Plan for Undocumented and Low-Income New Yorkers
We can’t save the world by playing by the rules, because the rules have to be changed.

Ugh the NYT comments are disgusting
The idea that this is to save money by reducing ER visits (as all public health programs do) seems to have been lost on the commenters. As was the idea that maybe the commenters themselves could save money if their premiums did not include insurance company profits. And I read a lot of comments...

I read Blasio's tweet about this
The first 20 comments were from people bitching about having to pay for poor people's medical care. It went downhill from there.
How great would it be though if this is for real? California is doing something with its health care too which some say could lead to single payer. This might be the start of something that will filter to other states and then all of a sudden we have single payer. This might happen.
Scientists are concerned that conspiracy theories may die out if they keep coming true at the current alarming rate.
Ergo my title
Policy by Press Release is stupid. I'm not bitchin I'm looking for details.

um.
the plan you've described is in fact a single payer plan -- a particularly extensive one, but definitely single payer.
