Wanted:

Yesterday was the start of the Stanley Cup Finals. It was also the day, 3 years ago, we lost our Shinobi (Shi-No-Be) to very old age. I shared about our loss and I shared about what a good girl Shinobi was. I hadn't been able to do that in so long, mostly because we had been inundated with so many other deaths. 10 in 8 years. So we are healing. Yesterday was healing.

And I wanted to test out my home here on CC99%. I feel like a bit of a rescue pup here myself.

Here's a link to the start of it all: Shinobi Memorial

And here's my first CC99% Essay:

Wanted: A rescue mutt. Something along the size of a small collie, corgi, cocker or terrier. Border collie mix of anything, labby, doodles, puddles, wuzzahellkinnadogizzat, 4 legged or just three. Aussies as well and only really lazy bone, near coma cattle dogs. But all are more than willing to apply. Someone who could fit perhaps with me in my kayak or maybe agile enough to sit in a make shift adaption on my kayak just for you.

A lap dog but not one of those purse dogs. Athletic but capable of going along with extreme lazy afternoons. We like to hike and then we like to crash. Should like walking in the rain as we live in Portland. Must like the country, beach, desert, rainforest, farm land, rivers, lakes and volcanoes as we live in ... Portland.

Must be willing to eat from my hand under the table in a secret manner even though every human in the house knows me, Mom, feeds you from the table even though I know better and even though you know better... we'll still just do it. It's our secret.

Boy or Girl. Young or Old. Black or white... or both. Long haired hippy or short kinky curlie do. Must be willing to share happiness with cats. Must be willing to get really dirty in pumpkin patches and u-cut tree farms. We know some great places that will get you all dolled back up again. They're quicker than us trying to do it in the tub. Trust me. Baths are to be outsourced. But we all take care of you at home. All of us.

Should like to be in kitchen room the most with Mom. Kitchen. It's the magic room in the house! Mom doesn't like to bend down and pick up crap that can easily just be eaten by you. That goes for carrots, the most likely food item to be dropped... and even cookie dough is up for grabs. Please be assured you will be given the best in doggie food and you'll love our Vet and staff - they even have a rad office pootie that always reminds me of David Bowie. Very alien looking.

Must like hockey or at least loud noisy homes. We yell at each other a lot because we are all so close and all are very passionate types. We debate and we reconcile. It's all cool. We yell at this thing called "TheNews." We do "go away" most weekend nights for a few hours. We come home yelling - win or lose - because we're all rowdy as we are crazy season ticket holders to the local hockey team. We'd take you if you if they'd allow you in the arena. They pat us like we're doggies each time we go to a game. It's called "security" We yell a lot about "freedom" -- and "security checks" aren't one of them. But we also stay home and watch a shit ton of hockey.

Hockey is GOD. That's dog spelled backwards.

I hope you are not offended by my colorful way of speaking. I talk like a drunken sailor. Some say it's a sign of ignorance. Fuck them. We don't care what other people say, right pooch?

We hope you like water and long rides in the car. We love to go camping and get all stinky. We love to run to the coast for the day and get all sandy and wind burned. I hope you don't mind that The Girl does get car sick at the drop of a hat. So don't sit by the window. Window side is The Girl side. You can sit up front by me. I'm the only driver in the house and you can I can go for some rides and errands all the time. Or you can commute with Dad or The Kids.

We also hope to teach you how to run along with the bikes safely. We have lots of bike pubs that allow for the dogs outside. But if you don't get the gist of running alongside, we can get a scooter side car rigged up for ya. No sweat. There's about 10 dog parks just in walking distance of where I type this. 10! Really no shit.

I really don't mind if you sleep on my sofa while we're away. I get it, I understand - it's smelly and comfy. But let's just pretend you're not supposed to and I'll pretend to be kinda irked. Same shit applies to drinking out the john. We know it's happening but we just pretend it doesn't. Path of least resistance and that jazzaroni. So just try to be chill about it. Like you pretend we don't fart and burp and cuss insanely.

I know you will probably eat cat turds from the box but please don't expect me to kiss you back... at least not immediately... when I see the evidence upon your smiling face. Again, it's that whole "pretend gig." I pretend it's not warm, steaming poop I'm picking up while on our walk - I just do it quickly. I'm responsible for your shit. Literally.

My family will never get over Shinobi, you will hear much about our black beauty who was with us for 15 years, but you will be loved from the moment we meet. You will be cherished and loved like no other dog.

I can't wait to learn all of the "musts" you have for us. We're not looking for a dog. We're not looking for a replacement. We just want to finally meet YOU.

I hope it's soon.
Love, Mom

Thank you to all the cc99%ers who understand what it's like to lose a dear girl like Shinobi.

My son and I are so eager to go out and let our hearts be trampled over, sign us up. But my husband and daughter just are so crushed and we have to respect their paths. They are also looking out for our two ten year old cats who adored our dog, but may not be willing to be so tolerant of another.

But I needed to write what I did. Sometimes it's just best for me to "put it all out there".

And... Go Sharks.

in Madeleine L'Engle's Time Quartet (A Wrinkle In Time, A Wind In The Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters); in one of the books they're mourning the loss of their dog from dignified old age, when a stray just shows up on their doorstep; one of the parents comment that their dogs always seem to find them rather than the other way around. Wishing the same for you and the family.

the death of my dear Deeogee. 17 years of the most faithful soul one could get to love.
Her companion Boone, was the most heartbroken. He lost seven of his meager forty two healer pounds in under two weeks.
Just picked up a pound puppy five days ago. A three year old healer/pit mix who only cares about love and licks.
All is well again.
Best of luck on your search. There's a dog waiting for you.

8 weeks old, had 4 different types of worms, mange, and fleas. She would not have lived another day. We nursed her to health and have had her for a little over a year. She has been a fantastic addition to the family.

I would recommend finding a dog there. There are so many that need rescue. I guess there are lots here in the U.S. as well.

Wish I could rescue them all.

Also, Hockey is my second favorite sport (after Lacrosse). My team is the NJ Devils though. Grew up very close to their original stadium.

My daughter's desire is to get a place of her own that has acreage and a barn. So she can adopt as many cats as she can and have them in a barn. But not like a hoarder she insists LOL

When the T-Birds and Tips can actually fill their arenas for more than 25% of the season, maybe an NHL team might drop by. But I doubt it.

Actually I don't want an NHL team here. The fans don't support the teams they got here. And people already bitch about $25 dollar seats. They would never be able to attend an NHL game. Parking alone would be $25.

My seats cost me $40 for the pair. NHL seats in same location would be at least $85 - $120 a piece.

I wouldn't be able to be a STH or even have a season pack.

almost every rescue I have been involved in could have been written with the kicker, "It was a dark and stormy night...."

All but Dylan who was at an actual adoption clinic and Moonya who was saved by a friend.

Me and my brother rescued some cats from the damn gutter, someone had put them in a box and put it in there. It was seen and called in and we waited with the crying neighbor who had called the police but they wouldn't come out. So me and my brother pulled were able to "rake" them up and out. That was a dark and stormy and shitty night. As I pulled up each kitten and handed them to my neighbor who barely spoke anything other than Japanese, dear Keiko, and was putting them in her hiked up dress as a way to collect them. 4 kittens. We took two. Keiko found homes for the others. My brother's cat ended up dying of FL. Mine grew to be 18 pounds of humongous ragdoll size. He had double pawes, huge hands - which is why he was the first out.

But I learned a dark lesson. People were cruel and on dark and stormy nights you do the right thing even when those who should like adults and cops don't. You just keep pulling out the kittens... because who knows how many actually were in there to begin with. It's a horrible feeling. You'r helping but you don't know when to stop.

I read that and the other comments out loud this afternoon to my son. We liked that quote the most. I even texted it to my daughter today.

Just read to him what I wrote here and finishing up on the comments to him now.

When we do have a dog, we might want to call it "Matches" so we can tell our friends to, "go play with Matches."

Biggrin

Well, they said my son would never speak. At first they even thought he was deaf. But his first sentence at 10 was "give me back my pen, damnit."

And it was done with fantastic intonation and annunciation. I was actually very... fucking proud. Biggrin And I told the asshole of the old school ways special ed teacher to give him back his PEN because he couldn't write as well with a pencil and since she and her special ed director husband refused to not only get him a assistive tech device or allow him to use the one we bought for him so he could focus on MATH instead of having to focus on the physical holding and writing of a damn pencil....

Oh... that's another essay.

Last night was a bit of a bummer. But I think we can make the correct adjustments that need to be done. I'm so glad they didn't cave and give up. It's been a long, hard journey with this team. I about wrote them off a few times. It's a love-hate relationship. I almost like a co-dependent one. I swear that I will leave them. I swear that they will change. I swear that if only they knew how much I loved them they would change....

It's sad. Biggrin

But the hockey community has always been there for my kids. They are family and now they mean so much to my son. Hockey was his first word. It's how I KNEW he wasn't deaf like the doctors said.

We hockey fans are the greatest at everything I am learning as I grow older. My hockey family were and still are the only ones who stuck around during the hardest of times. Our daughter rescued ours just after she'd rescued another dog. She took both dogs to a dog park with a pond, and the first (big) dog jumped into the pond. The second small dog, which became ours, followed. After he was a little way out, he got scared but was able to make it back to shore. He's hated water ever since.

You'd have to put her inside if you wanted to use the hose for anything. She just wanted to drink the hose water - it was a game. But she did not like to be in the water or at the beach.

I write software for veterinarians. I just wanted to add. Do not let your dog eat cookie dough if it has chocolate chips in it. Chocolate is toxic and possibly fatal for dogs.

I did not know this myself until I started working alongside veterinarians to determine the things that computers can do for their practice. They report that Christmas, Valentines and Easter are often sad times for many dog lovers.

We also share not to put chocolate gifts under the tree. Tin foil and chocolate is da woist. Heck, we don't even wrap presents with curly ribbon as it's bad for dogs and cats. Kitty had to have curly ribbon removed from her surgically, it ratted up in her guts. I have learned how to save and re-use real and pretty ribbon and scraps of raffia.

The only time cookie dough is dropped is when me and the kids are fighting over it. It annoys my spouse to no end! He thinks it on the same level as having to listen to Rush or something. He actually fake hurls when he sees us three cookie dough infidels fighting over the beaters. Shinobi was smart enough to just depart long before the brawl.

I usually make snickerdoodles, peanut butter, shortbread type cookies. And as naughty as I sound like the food dropping and feeding the dog human food... it does balance out well with the rest of the good stuff we give our dogs. and I had, his "chocolate" incident was just a minor to a bigger one you just called up in my memory through your admonishment.

Got my Shepard/Doberman mix just before my senior year of college from the family of a drummer peer of mine in my hometown. Was soon to find out he was the prefect dog for me. As every owner can attest they certainly do take on your personae to whatever extent dogs actually do pick up on these things. We were bonded by mischief, having a good time, and socializing. You can imagine the kinds of things he was exposed to in such an environment.

I might be on my way home from class and a visiting graduate friend would have let himself in so that when I came up to the door I would see my puppy on the 2nd floor roof looking precariously over. Other times he'd frequently be hustled away by a group of girls who would take him to a park somewhere.

But there were two incidents that stick out that always make me smile. Not yet a month or so old and we threw him in a half-cut cardboard box in Sept of my senior year to make the 4.5 hr trip upstate NY from LI. He was amazing, totally took to the van, the long trip, made no fuss. When me and my girlfriend finally go up there and were barely unpacked we get a call from my roommate saying he had broken down on the Palisades Pkwy, which is just outside of NYC, a 3 hr trip back down. We put the dog back in the box, made the trip back upstate and he obliged again, seeming to just relish the company and energy. Even though he had just spent an inordinate amount of time in a cardboard box during a long car trip he seemed to be saying I'm in solidarity with whatever you're about.

Some time shortly thereafter, as my girlfriend at the time was head over heels in love with this spirited little guy, she was watching him for the night while I had some commitment like band practice or something. I had come over to pick him up, but at some point she lost track of his whereabouts in those big slightly dilapidated quasi-Victorian homes that dot college towns. Our search led to finding him on all fours, on top of the dining room table, where she had just laid a fresh pan of chocolate brownies. His head was buried in it and gobbling the dessert down with gusto.

But that wasn't the big one.

Early one Sunday afternoon I woke up to my roommate smoking a bong in the tv room getting ready to watch the NFL. I was dealing a little weed then and we always had something around the house, even though I personally had quit smoking a few years before. When I walked in he asked if I had seen the little piece of hash he had on the table. No man, I just got up. Suddenly, it occurred to us both. The dog got it. Yup, Curious George must have swiped it right of the low table we had.

With anxiety and trepidation I grabbed his snout, put my nose to his, and...started to sweat. Shit, the puppy was now maybe four months old and he just ate a fucking chunk of hash! He couldn't have weighed more than 15-20lbs at the most. So, we waited. Sure and soon enough he started to exhibit signs.

First he began walking wobbly. Then peeing a little bit. After which he made whimpering noises. Poor guy. Of course as college kids we were amused and had confidence in his resiliency, having had watched his character develop. But the truth is we were a little scared too. Finally, he begins to have this stomach convulsions, stats to heave, and after a few of these, releases what looked like a fully formed shit out of his mouth. Of course, it was his body's way of rejecting the noxious drug the fastest way it could.

The poor guy basically conked out, curled up in a ball where he usually slept and was out like a light for hours. We were much relieved to see and feel him bounce back as soon as he had fully rested and slept of the high.

He was something else. Aside from the chocolate and hash incidents (and many more) he was such an intelligent, loyal, in tune, funny and jovial, mischievous guy. When I moved to Queens he would walk the street by himself, negotiating traffic, sidewalks and people all the time. One neighbor was so enamored of him that she would come by with fresh cold cuts and leave it on the doorhandle for him if I wasn't home, always adding, "he's smarter than most people." Neighborhood kids would actually knock on my door to "call" for him, to which I would always see if he was interested, which he mostly was, and he'd go and play with them. Petey had nothing on him.

Still dream about him, though I had to put him down over a decade ago, after having him for 15 1/2 years. Suffice to say he was there for a lot of my life, and different parts, always a central figure and friend and comfort to many who passed through my life. As far as I'm concerned chocolate and hash only enhanced his abundant, overflowing spirit. Smile

I'm not a dog, but can I come and live with your family? You guys sound like you have a lot of fun and I love hockey. We used to go to the games in salt lake and sat on bleachers and had a blast.
I don't remember if it was before hockey got big or it was a junior league or if it was before it took off in Utah.
I'm coming up on the 5th anniversary of The Bestest Dawg in the worlds death and still think of her every morning when I get out of bed.
All of my dawgs have been special, but Beagle Bailey was my favorite. She was my copilot and didn't mind when I got lost taking a road less traveled. Especially when I got lost in the back roads over in Marin county and it would take me hours to find my way back to civilization.
I think I got lost because I was looking at the scenery to take photos and didn't pay attention to where I was going.
But we always made our way home.
She loved cows. I'd see them first and say " Cows" and she would perk up.
I'd park and let her sit and watch them.
I hope you find your special someone soon.

It's mutual. I cherish them as much as they do me.
I can't imagine a life without a dawg in it.

done in a couple of months to check B's bone spur (Spondylosis Deformans). Thankfully, he seems to be doing pretty well on the relatively low (or standard) strength of Cosequin, and Fish Oil. 'Fingers crossed' that they don't find nerve damage.

Hope you post more photos of you and your 'dawgs.' Our picture-taking days subsided substantially after we left Alaska. (Looking back, I'm sorry that they did--not that we were ever that good at photography, like you and others here.)

Hey, have a good one!

I have no idea what she thought when she saw cows, but she just left bed seeing them and she was always on the lookout for them whenever we went anywhere.

I had a Springer Spaniel that hated going in the car even when she knew we were going for our walk. She would hide under the furniture until I put my foot down and told her to get in the car. I was tired of dragging her out to it or carrying her to it.
She was quite happy to stay home while Bailey and I traveled. Except when she knew we were going camping. But she had to see the trailer hooked up before she would get in. Silly dawg.
Here's her look when she HAD to go in the car.
Bo and my mom. Bo insisted in riding in the front seat when we went in other people's cars.

And one more of her beautiful smile.

The dogs loved it. We lived in that one summer when the house was under completion. Two dogs, one semi-feral kitten (for a few weeks) and two adults in an 8' camper. RIP Amino, Sasha, Kitten and Geof.

I'll bet she either loved camping or knew that you'd be leaving for longer than a walk took.

Sometime I will relate my camping experience with Ernie, my most beloved dog.

We lived in Marin Co while my husband was stationed at SIMA SF, Navy place... I loved driving out to Pt. Reyes and drive along the coast. The Fog meets The Birds car trip. Biggrin

All I had to say was, "The Kids" and Shinobi would perk up. Let's go get the kids! She'd get up to go to the car.

Any time you said, "Who farted!?!" She's slink out. Even if it wasn't her who farted. We had to watch that phrase as she got so old the last year. Even brittle, she'd try to leave if anyone laughed and said "who farted!?!" So we tried not to ever say the word.

And had a doctor in Marin and after my appointment, we'd go 'sploring. There's a waterfall in the middle of where people live in the middle of the redwoods and then I'd go down to Muir beach and instead of going home, I'd find a road to take and that's where I would get lost.
I can't remember the name of the county I got lost in once and didn't get home until after 2am.
It's somewhere between Muir beach area and Stinson beach. It was full of incredible scenery, rivers, bridges and of coarse, valley oaks.
I had a 15 foot trailer and would go to Bodega Bay as often as I could. I could basically camp on the beach and if I couldn't get a camping site, I would park in the parking lot for $5 a night.
Here's an view from the California coast website of Wright's beach which was 6 miles north of Bodega Bay.
I have photos of all those area on my website that is in my sigline.
I miss that area of California something fierce, but Utah has some great scenery too. But the great salt lake is nothing like the Pacific Ocean.
It's the waves that I miss.

I was born in Portland and raised near Umatilla Landing. In Oregon there are a lot of pet dogs, and a lot of working dogs (not mutually exclusive categories to be sure). I never owned a dog during my 20 years living in Oregon. Let me explain, we treat "our" dogs as part of the family, so "Bandit" was not a pet to be owned, he was part of the family, and my brothers protector and my very good (and occasionally obnoxious) friend. Occasionally?, no, all the time, we kids were raise by "our" dogs. So, while there are pet, and working dogs, there are an even larger number of "companion" members of the family dogs in Oregon.

I travel extensively from here (central Nebraska) through all the western states and I am here to tell you that Oregonians are different: "What do you mean,'He's isn't allowed in here??' " I cannot count the number of times I have here that angry retort while hanging around some crusty old Eastern Oregon Cowboy. Damn it's going to be nice to be back home.

Truly, people in other places love their dogs, but the difference in Oregon is palpable. My granddad's very good friend Sibby gave her life saving one of my cousins, and you will never convince me that she didn't know what she was doing. So, be forewarned: when talking to one of us be aware of this special bond, and we will get along just fine. And, if you say "Ory-gone" I will try not to laugh.

also enjoy the people - if you treat dogs well, then you probably treat your fellow human well too. I love that dogs can run free on the beaches, which are all public.

and they do own our hearts and our memories. I apologize for using the term pet... I use it as well as other terms. I try to balance them all out. Because mere words can't fully express what they mean to us.

PS I was born in a small town near Mt. St. Helens, Worshington. Biggrin It's good to be back home in the Pacific Wonderland.

I was a student at Blue Mountain CC in Pendleton and that summer I needed something so as to not starve. The Operating Engineers were running a training camp teaching a large group from the Umatilla Reservation to run heavy equipment, and one of my teachers had a friend of a friend. After a couple of days the Surveyor of Record turned me into an instructor teaching the new operators to design roads and set stakes.

A week later his friend of a friend hired me to work as a grade checker on the I-15 with Calabrese and Sons. I didn't last but a week. It turns out that knowing what is supposed to happen is not the same as actually doing it on the job site, and when operators nearly get killed they tend to get grumpy.

beautiful way to honor Shinobi's memory. Have to say, not sure which essay--last night's or today's--touched me the most.

I especially loved this passage,

My family will never get over Shinobi, you will hear much about our black beauty who was with us for 15 years, but you will be loved from the moment we meet. You will be cherished and loved like no other dog.

I can't wait to learn all of the "musts" you have for us. We're not looking for a dog. We're not looking for a replacement. We just want to finally meet YOU.

I hope it's soon.
Love, Mom

Whatever furbaby finds you, she/he will be an extraordinarily fortunate one!

Have a good evening, Janet. And thanks!

Last year when our old pup passed, before we broke down and got another rescue dog. It was a horrible two months. The mate is home a lot (illness) and the house had a stillness... even the kitty was mourning. Within an hour the house was full of activity again. The kitty stopped yowling and started training the new pup. The honey stopped moping about. It was a bit too soon for me, because I was constantly worried that our new pup would get sick like the old one did (very suddenly, vets and specialists couldn't figure out what was wrong with him). But in retrospect, it was perfect timing. I am not sure we could've survived in a house that quiet, with just the kitty walking around and calling out for her lost friend.

We once had a dog that was hit by a car on our lone country road. I know we should not have let him out, but back in that time - it was "normal" to let your dog out to go pee. Plus we lived out in a country setting. And it was my parent's way at the time. We were crushed because who ever hit him came back to put a beer box on him.

We were up all night. Swore off "NO MORE DOGS - IT HURTS!"

The next day me and my Mom were at the pound.

Sometimes it's just that way. Other times it's a bit different. Our hearts tell us what to do. But we have 4 hearts in this house. Four giant hearts. All are broken and they all mend differently.

Thank you for sharing.

No end to the excitement, for sure. They are the hardest workers and the most loyal friends, even when they are telling us what to do and are teething our forearms to get us to do it. The mama dog is mine, and the grown pups are my husband's. They are family.

cutest little girl but man oh man is she a handful. She wants to work and run and play and catch and jump all at the same time. They stopped by my house a few years ago while caravaning and we could barely talk in our backyard without Clovey bringing us a ball she had found. We'd toss it, she'd bring it right back and bark. Work! Play! Work! Play!

Wonderful dog but very high maintenance which is fine for some families.

Working dogs like to work. There are some breeds that line up well with their families and some that the families should really think long and hard before adopting. Like people who get a big runner breed, then keep then in the apartment all day and wonder why their dog is unhappy.

That's why the Wanted: I thought I could put down a bit of ourselves. My family read most of this last night, comments and all. We fell asleep and had puppy dreams.

It'll happen when it's supposed to. So many dogs needs a home. Our home, I think, needs a dog. Our home has always had one. Not true... our home has always had a cat in it. But... sometimes you have to wait for love.

Thank you for sharing your cow babies.
