Caucus Disability Open Thread
Submitted by The Aspie Corner on Wed, 05/25/2016 - 8:07pm
I just posted my GBCW diary at TOP. When I said I wouldn't be posting disability stuff there, I meant it. With that out of the way, I'd like to start something new here: The Disability Caucus.
Disability is something that can affect anyone at any time, anywhere. And as I've stated plenty of times, I've had to deal with it, and the system associated with it, since birth. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
So here's what I'd like to do with this thread: Spread awareness, and perhaps provide support. Because the elements know we could certainly use it considering the government and society at large has turned its back on us in many ways.
With that being said, I welcome any ideas anyone might have for this endeavour.
Thanks,
Aspie

I look forward to reading your series here
I read your GB diary there, sadly I read some of the comments. That place has really gone down the stinker.

That's just how it goes, I guess.
They wanted an echo chamber...well, they're going to get it.
Modern education is little more than toeing the line for the capitalist pigs.
Guerrilla Liberalism won't liberate the US or the world from the iron fist of capital.
Agree completely
the responses to the doary in question along with Valtin's turned my stomach. In a way they summed up TOP perfectly. The place is losing superb diarists and gaining boatloads of snide and dismissive idiots. The disrespect for serious writers is absolutely gobsmacking.

I couldn't read thru them all
it got pretty pathetic, pretty fast.

You and me both
The majority were just downright spiteful.

70% Disabled myself...
Course because I LOOK fine, I get the standard "Freeloader" accusations.
Some folks just don't know what it's like not to leave the house for weeks because of fear/PTSD.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Many of those folks who pass judgment also claim
to be liberal or progressive. Sad, isn't it?

I used to laugh at the Right Wing accusations of...
Limousine Liberals...
Until they took over my old favorite site.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Limousine Liberals..I also call them Gentricrats.
These folks often come from areas that have seen heavy gentrification in recent years.

Gentricats
that's a brilliant name for them.

Emphasis on CLAIM.
Those who sneer at the disabled are neither liberal nor progressive.

Supplemental O2 dependent and arthritis here.
And I know well the looks of disgust, although perhaps not as well as you do, DMW.
Just trying to make an honest life and an honest living can easily grind you to pieces, especially if flesh-destroying bacteria (MRSA) have their thumb on the scale.

I scrape by every month... but still...
It gets insane sometimes. (Loathe the occasional month I have to go to the food bank to keep the power on.)
As it is, I know I need my medication but sometimes... It gets kinda stupid. (Haven't taken it in a week because my my lighter ran out of gas and I'm broke till the 1st...)
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
I'm sorry detroitmechworks,
I've been in a similar situation myself. Please let me know if I can help in any way. I usually have extra cash in the last weeks every month. It shouldn't take much for lighter fluid. It would, naturally be pay it forward.
This year I've experienced all of my meds going up in price. One went from $24 to $349. Others were almost as bad.
Chained CPI screwed us, then they raise the prices.

Only 6 days.
And I use disposables, so that's usually not an issue... Just ran out this time when the kids had mandatory school events which required late night cab rides.
My medication is Cannabis, and I'm usually good for 1-2 months with 50 bucks. (Legality is AWESOME!) Problem is finding a good strain. So far the Four I've found that work are Blueberry, Blue Cheese, Blue Diesel, and Purple Monkey Balls.
But then, once again, it's dependent on finding a good dispensary... (One close to work is GOOD but expensive. The cheap and good one is down in Milwaukee and off the bus line... )
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Veteran discounts are offered at some dispensaries
at mine they offer 10% off.
Leafly is an awesome site to look up strains: You can search by mood or diagnosis.

I use it as a guideline...
My personal chemistry is a little weird. Indica hybrids are the best for keeping me awake and aware. Too much THC and I just pass out. Too little and I feel no effects at all.
Still shopping around town for the PERFECT place. (The Milwaukee one Ran out of Blue Cheese 6 months ago, and I REALLY miss that strain. Was probably the best)
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
some strains
Blue Dream. Daytime, pain, stress.
edit: any dispensary that is "legit" should have this staple strain. If they don't, getcher ass elsewhere. And there's a huge diff between pot shops and medical marijuana dispensaries.
Also edited due to your upthread post: Blue Dream is a hybrid - Ind/Sat, and if a strain has too much THC for ya you can always mix in a bit of some high CBD strain into your bowl or what have ya.
Strawberry Cough: Anti-anxiety, PTSD, daytime
Lemon Skunk: Daytime, Stress, OCD, PTSD
the last two are strains my son uses in a tincture for autism/anxieties.
"Love One Another" ~ George Harrison
Yeah, the closest one I learned the HARD way...
Sold me a strain that didn't work at all... Sigh. Fortunately, I stuck to my rule of only buying a quarter of anything new, just in case, and it was the right call in this case.
Haven't tried Blue Dream, but will look for it the next time I need a refill. (Still good for a long while with my PMB... except for that damn lighter running out...)

and there are people living in their mansions who game
the system and get food stamps. The dirt couldn't be more sticky. It's amazing how little control the bureaucrats have over their programs and are not able to control its abuses.

Oh yeah. Then there's the training and re-training...
and certification and re-certification. It's all a pain in the ass.

On the job training
even if you get lucky to get on the job training, you're subjected to intimate questions about hygiene skills and living skills... from a prospective employer.
Q: can you use the bathroom yourself? if yes, do you need assistance in any of the following...wiping, handwashing.
A: Dude, I'm here for a low paying job, usually lower than minimum wage because somehow it's legal to underpay disabled workers - that involves picking up the cigarette butts and other bits of trash in your parking lot....
No dignity. Nothing.

Oh yeah. Then there's the 'job clubs'
and other stupid things they put you through just to keep receiving services. It's mind-numbing.

Oh lord, that crap...
They used to pull that in CA when you asked for help finding a place to live. "Come to our 'Housing Search Group', you can network!"
Almost lived with my folks for 10 months because of that. It was only thanks to a great guy here in Portland I got out of CA.

After a certain age, transient disability is likely
and may be permanent (arthritis, anyone?). I had a vestibular complication, undiagnosed for 6 months. Walking was scary, negotiating down stairs enough to cause panic attacks. PT (mostly visual) brought me back, bless you, Annie. Try living alone with one functional arm for two months as well. This will be helpful to many.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
I'm hemiplegic myself. It's no picnic, let me tell you.
The left side of my body is much weaker than my right. And I can't move the toes on my left leg and the left leg is about 3/4 of an inch shorter. I just love dealing with the back pain that comes with that. Even with a raised left shoe and a carbon fiber AFO.

helpful to many
Speaking. Permanent flavor. Knees, hips, lower spine, feet.
Reading your message had me search "vestibular complication". Found out a lot about another problem I'm facing these days. In particular, this website was a great help!
Thank You, riverlover!

Years ago now I helped start and run Chronic Tonic Gathering
We met weekly for coupla three years or so on TOP. Great group. It eventually faded.

Great idea TAC...
add the open thread tag and it will show up in the OT Feature menu in the right sidebar where it will get more exposure.
Arthritis and the ever-popular "all-in-your-head" multiple
chemical sensitivities here. No idea how to turn this into a full-fledged caucus. JtC?
I went over to TOP and your tip jar was hidden so I tipped it, but it's still hidden. Anyone else want to chance a tip?
Please check out Pet Vet Help, consider joining us to help pets, and follow me @ElenaCarlena on Twitter! Thank you.
Looking forward to it!
I can't bear to go back to TOP to see your diary, but you're making the right move. Those assholes don't deserve your skill, or anyone here's skill.
Their loss shall be our gain
I still stop by to rec up BNR and other worthy items. Good stuff still appears outside of the primary diaries.
But DK has made itself utterly useless to anyone interested in progressive politics.
BTW: Port your GBCW over here...
Good work is always appreciated, and I refuse to give TOP any more hits.

Having a flare of my autoimmune disorder. Not feeling all that great at the moment but appreciate you starting this here. Much love and solidarity.

Sorry to be late to the party...
Yo guys and gals...
I am disabled with congestive heart failure, bad back, gout and diabetes. At least I have family nearby and I am in HUD subsidized housing (interesting story by itself...) and on SSDI; Social Security Disability Insurance, although it has been frequently misunderstood as SSD Income. That is a rather accurate misunderstanding.
Americans with Disabilities Act recognizes deafness as disability due to social and communication barriers.
That is why I did not mention deafness in my opening sentence. Been deaf my whole life. I gots stories and all about that...
This is the comment I wrote to the
Assholes on Kos that are laughing about this site and wrote rude comments about homer leaving the site.
I flagged a few of the more nasty ones. One person wrote GTFO already.
The reason why people are getting bolder at writing comments that used to been HR'd is because they are seeing what Markos is writing and giving people permission to be dicks.
My reaction to their Crude and ignorant babble...
