BBB of TOP goes totally OTP!

In a thread at TOP, BBB said:

It isn't [Sanders's] ideology. Its his overloaded amount of wacko and weirdo shit he's written and done in his life.

Yes, Warren can clear a vetting. There's a few problematic items but nothing nearly as crazy as the shit Sanders has said and done.

The leftist hippy shit is fine for Vermont. Maybe Oregon. But in the rest of the country... No.

To which I responded

Hoo boy!

"His overloaded amount of wacko and weirdo shit he's written and done in his life."

and

"The leftist hippy shit "

Wow, this sounds like something RMoney would say behind closed doors.

I can’t believe you’re saying this in the open.

I guess you’re a 1%er. Good to know.

I'm looking forward to getting a nastygram. If my comment above is flagworthy, they're beyond redemption.

The who wrote the Big Short was himself formerly a worker on Wall Street, and it gave him the expertise to explain what happened to the economy very well.

If you haven't read the book or watched the movie, I recommend you do. Both were quite good.

It's essentially the story of a group of people who knew that the bust in the economy, and it explains how they knew it, and a lot of craziness that really happened.

That hippy shit he refers to is what is known as sound economics. It amazes me that these guys can look at what his happened over the last twenty years and still say Keynes is full of crap. He's obviously one of those guys.

The link to them was in a diary that got banned. One of those "new people, switched to HRC" diaries with nothing but shit about Sanders.

The writings are basically what only an open-minded person or English major could appreciate for what they were. It was not literature, but it was typical of the types of writing being done at the time by the avaunt garde writers (think of people like Kerouac and Ginsburg, for the more literary types).

At TOP, I posted a part of Ginsberg's Howl to shut up one of them who was so "upset" that this kind of writing could exist. = ) Damn Faux Puritans!

Just a guess, but the "wacky" and "leftest" things probably meant living in a kibbutz. *sigh* Btw, if he is upset over "leftist" things being done, maybe BBB doesn't belong on a "progressive" site. (Although, he currently isn't on one now.)

a moral atheist and an amoral Christian.

No offense to Christians but I think morality is a more core part of human (and animal) DNA than you give credit. Animals demonstrate acts of kindness and selfless empathy all the time. As sayeth wild hair guy:

If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed.

Intuitively it is evident that creatures that value their own sort would have a higher success rate.
I'm not getting into my thoughts about whether or not he even existed but regardless, just assuming he did then: That Christ came along and advocated for humanitarian causes later doesn't make it his idea to 'do unto others' even though it was commendable and great that he did. That was a rule of nature long before he came along.

I think if you were really going to list what were the norm I would say:
moral atheist
moral Christian

Older and Wiser Now's picture

Remember, Jesus had been asked "how should we pray to God?" They wanted to know how to do it correctly.

1 Our Father, Who Art in Heaven
2 Glory be thy name
3 Thy Kingdom come, they will be done, on Earth as it is in heaven
4 Give us this day our daily bread
5 And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

Lines 2 and 3 - Praise Him, hope that merciful and fair rules are enacted on earth
Line 4 - It is okay to ask that your basic needs be met
Line 5 - This one is the KICKER. It's essentially: "God, please FORGIVE ME to the exact same extent I am willing to FORGIVE OTHERS".

So many people chant these words and don't even realize what they are saying. The implications seem obvious to me.

If we are not willing to forgive others, we should not expect God to forgive us on judgement day.

If we are willing to forgive others, then God will be merciful to us.

Jesus wanted people to have more understanding and tolerance of others. I think of this as another form of the Golden Rule. We often get very angry at others over relatively simple misunderstandings. We should treat others the way we ourselves want to be treated. Sometimes people make mistakes. Obtaining forgiveness from someone you've accidentally hurt can be a very beautiful thing.

Just wanted to share the above ... but the teaching is complicated. Forgiving others for intentional wrongs can be very powerful, but it is very difficult. Now I'm thinking of the black Christians who chose to forgive, I'm forgetting his name, even after he came and shot many in the congregation. Those Christians are true followers of Jesus I think. Such forgiveness is very, very powerful, it can transform lives. But very few Christians that I have met understand and/or try to follow this teaching.

It is good to thank Jesus. But that's only half of the equation. I'm pretty sure that you and I are on the same page as far as this goes, Cali. Just wanted to share it because it seemed like a good place to share, not because I felt you "needed to be told". This is one of my most intimate beliefs/understandings. I didn't see what was being said in the Lord's prayer for decades; maybe others might find it interesting too?

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

This happened a year or more ago. It had nothing to do with the current controversies. The comment didn't affect me nor was it in response to anything I said.

BBB made an egregiously over-the-top and vicious comment. I wrote to Kos as well as several front pagers saying I felt such writing by a front pager didn't serve the site well, especially by a front pager who has the blessing of the site. I never heard from Kos, but did hear from others. BBB was soon given a TO for another nasty comment.

and BBB is way, way beyond that red line for me. he is one of those folks who thinks he is way, way, way smarter than he actually is, probably because he doesn't spend much time around people who are particularly smart. more to the point, he imagines he's way, way, way smarter than, for example, me. the immodest reality is that folks who are somewhere near 3 sigmas get used to being the smartest person in the room, and don't realize it when they're outclassed, whereas folks out near 3.5 sigmas usually end up in jobs where they're surrounded by other people in that region, and they can usually tell within 10 or 20 minutes whether they're talking to someone in that class or not. being condescended to by someone who does't realize just how far out of his league he is, well ... that's a bitter fucking pill to swallow, and i impolitely demur, because fuck him.

Shilling is not necessarily a bad thing, I'd shill for Bern if he'd let me, why not get paid to take positions I support anyway. But when a blog says, "Identify yourself if you're paid," which Kos does, I'd respect that. I don't think Kos enforces that any longer (getting paid himself). OTOH, I can certainly refute the arguments with facts and logic without worrying about who is paid. But I would have trouble supporting a position I don't believe in. And when people I used to think of as progressive are suddenly expressing their support of Hill, and it's usually the "we need a woman" type of thing, and some of them are even wandering into the fact-free zone and thinking if they sneer condescendingly enough we won't notice... well, not only am I unconvinced, I think they're not convinced either - thus, writing because they're getting paid.
