If This Passes the 1st Amendment and Free Speech is on its Deathbed
Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) has released a discussion of a potential bill that will change the course of the internet as we know it.
Blackburn Releases Discussion Draft of National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) released a discussion draft of her legislative framework to codify President Trump’s executive order to create one rulebook for artificial intelligence (AI) that protects children, creators, conservatives, and communities from harm while ensuring the United States wins the global race for AI supremacy:
“Instead of pushing AI amnesty, President Trump rightfully called on Congress to pass federal standards and protections to solve the patchwork of state laws that has hindered AI innovation,” said Senator Blackburn. “Now, Congress must answer his call to establish one federal rulebook for AI to protect children, creators, conservatives, and communities across the country and ensure America triumphs over foreign adversaries in the global race for AI dominance. The TRUMP AMERICA AI Act is the solution America needs.”
When it comes to curtailing rights, it's always about the kids. How convenient to blame it on AI.
Sunsets Section 230.
Requires covered online platforms, including social media platforms, to implement tools and safeguards to protect users under the age of 17 against online harms. Specifically, this would:
- Require covered platforms to exercise reasonable care in the design and use of features that increase minors’ online activity to prevent and mitigate harm to minors (e.g., mental health disorders and severe harassment).
- Require covered platforms to provide certain safeguards to minors, such as protections for minors’ data; tools for parents of minors, such as access to minors’ privacy settings; and a mechanism for account holders and visitors to report harm to minors on the platform.
- Prohibit covered platforms from conducting market or product research on children under the age of 13 and may only conduct research on those under the age of 17 with parental consent.
- Require covered platforms to provide users notice when using algorithms and permit users to switch to an algorithm that does not rely on user-specific data.
- Establishes requirements for companies providing AI chatbot and companion services to protect the children.
- Enables the U.S. Attorney General, state attorneys general, and private actors to file suit to hold AI system developers liable for harms caused by the AI system for defective design, failure to warn, express warranty, and unreasonably dangerous or defective product claims. If an AI system deployer substantially modifies an AI system or intentionally misuses an AI system contrary to its intended use, the deployer could also be held liable.
Don't be fooled, it's about more than protecting the children, the children aspect is meant to insert the camel's nose inside the tent.
Section 230 shields website owners from liability tied to user-generated content, without that protection it would be up to the site owner to closely monitor speech on their platforms. I've always had a target on my back and it just got larger. That pertains to you all as well.
Repealing Section 230 has been tried before and died out due to the outcry from the public. We're going to need that x3 this time.
The 1st Amendment and free speech has been under attack for some time, the powers that shouldn't be want it gone. Free Speech is the cornerstone of our rights as US citizens and it's up to us to see that it stays free.
If this goes forward it's time to get vocal, folks. The alternative is untenable, the alternative is to go quiet.

Good afternoon Free Rangers...
it's not too difficult to discern what and who this potential bill is all about.
So much for the current administration and their co-conspirators in congress' slogans about protecting the rights of We The People.
Yep, it's not 'we the people'
It's, according to them, 'you, the trash' 'we, the special'. They get the rights, we don't get any, but we get to pay for those special people. Gah.
If you're poor now, my friend, then you'll stay poor.
These days, only the rich get given more. -- Martial book 5:81, c. AD 100 or so
Nothing ever changes -- Sima, c. AD 2020 or so
It's funny...
how being filthy rich and wanting to control peoples lives go hand in hand. Not all of the filthy rich are like that, but the ones that rise to the top of politics seem to fit that category.
Some are corrupted before they enter politics and some become corrupted after, with a few exceptions. It's something like the chicken and egg causality dilemma, which comes first, the psychopath/sociopath tendencies, or the riches, or vice versa?
Either way, the corrupt put their well being above everyone else.
It sure is ABsolutely FABulous to see you
posting, JtC.
Hug you-know-who for me. I have mixed feelings about Section 230. FRightwingyahoos have abused the h3ll out of it. On the other hand, I absolutely despise AI. I have had to fight auto-edit/correct for years!! I am very grateful for my years as a professional proofreader. The yahoos have gotten even more ballsy and brazen now. I'm fighting them when I proof my text message replies. And it's all about MONEY. I've got enough degrees that I could teach Literature and Creative Writing. Not braggin', just stating facts. Hope all is well in East TX. You have an interesting Senate race developing. Rec'd!!

More and more...
peoples perceptions and world view are being developed by AI. An unreal world is being built around us. Do you doubt that? For just one example take a look at the algorithms youtube uses in the feeds on the right hand column. Fake AI videos are becoming dominant and they are ruining youtube. They're still fairly easily identified if one looks closely, but they'll only get better in the future. Articles, essays and comments are being made by AI bots where it's hard to discern if one is communicating with a human or a code driven fake persona. AI is quickly becoming pervasive in many if not most aspects of our day to day lives.
We old hippies used to refer to fake things as "plastic". That term was pretty much relevant back in the 60s and early 70s, but has really come of age in this Plastic New World Order we're being frog boiled into.
It's a brave new world of make believe, all to convince you that you'll own nothing and they'll be happy.
All is well here in Deep East Texas, and hugs to you-know-who have been given.
If we added a disclaimer to our comments
.
for instance - this does not reflect the opinions of the administrators
of this site - would that offer you a degree of protection? Expressing my
views is not intended to get you or the site in hot water with the censors.
Some guidance may be helpful. I do not want to be muffled any more than
anyone else. But a good portion of the reason of posting here is to air out
grievances. If that disappears, what are we left with?

evening qms...
i doubt that a disclaimer from a poster would do any good. the government wants to consider the site responsible for any material that appears on it, regardless of whether it is posted by a 3rd party that is a citizen.
if the government repeals section 230, people will have to go back to more primitive technologies. there is a chance that people could create private listservs or bulletin boards, though depending upon the way the laws are written that might not work either. people might have to go back to creating newspapers and snail-mail circulating commentaries.
Agreed. joe

Thanks joe...
exactly right.
It's really pretty simple...
the rule here at c99 has always been: say what you want with the exceptions of attacking or insulting other c99 members, no violent speech aimed at other c99 members or the public in general, including politicians. Say what you want about public figures but don't use rhetoric wishing violence or death upon anyone. That should be a given in any decent society.
Claiming we need a revolution of minds or a revolution in the way society works, or etc. etc., is fine, but talk of violent revolution and overthrow of our government is taboo. Why? Because there are certain key words that our minders pick up on. It's not that most of us wouldn't agree with that rhetoric, it's that we have to be smart if we want this community to survive what may be coming.
I believe much of the devolution of discourse across the internet is being fueled by operatives, bots and AI. One doesn't have to search very hard to find plenty of comments calling for violence against public figures and calls for violent revolution, on both sides of the aisle. It's my belief that much of this violent rhetoric is done on purpose as a honey trap to suss out the potential trouble makers for whatever may be coming down the pike, like fines or imprisonment. Don't think that will happen? Take a look at some of the new laws in certain states that limit what can be said about certain persons and entities. Take a look at what's happening in Great Britain, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, hell, just about everywhere. That, I'm afraid may be coming to America.
So, say what you want but be smart and careful about it, for your sake and the site as well.
PS: No a disclaimer wont work. Section 230 has always been a disclaimer for website owners, they want to take that away. That would essentially remake social media into a Potemkin shade of 1984. A plastic world in a plastic reality.
got it
.
speaking in code makes expression more complicated
but potentially more fun as well?

I used to
include the odd disclaimer in my posts.
People didn’t seem to care for it. Won’t make that mistake again.
Moving forward: I have nothing to offer. Sorry about that.
