Open Thread - 25 Sep 2025 - This Autism Thing is Really Getting to Me

This Autism Thing is Really Getting to Me

I'm probably a little too close to this, but Trump and RFK, Jr blaming mothers taking Tylenol sent me a bit over the edge.

An appropriate meme from a quora thread

Let me explain: my sister, who just turned 60, is severely autistic; this is called Level 3 autism* in today's world. Her autism is not because of Tylenol or acetominophen. She was a huge baby who took a very long time to be born, in 1965. Her autism MAY have been caused by drugs administered to my Mom while giving birth, but it's unlikely. It's probably genetic. Anyway, when my sister was born, one of the prevailing medical theories about autism was the Refrigerator Mother Theory, also known as Bettelheim's theory of autism.

This theory blamed the mother for being cold and unloving and... whatever. My first question was always, even when I only about 8 and heard this crap from doctors, how could my mother have two 'normal' kids (I'm including myself in this, probably erroneously Smile ) and then one autistic kid? I mean, don't the two older kids prove that my Mom did just fine as a mother? According to the 'experts' of the time, my sister was autistic because my Mom supposedly hated my sister. Although my sister's autism manifested itself from the moment she left the womb. My sister hated being held, even for nursing. She hated being touched. This was when she was just a week old! And that was just the start of it...

This crap of blaming the Mom for being whatever, taking whatever, making whatever mistakes, goes back a long way. And it's WRONG. If my Mom was such a refrigerator, why has she, and my now-deceased father, taken care of my sister in loving and caring ways for their whole lives? Sheez.

So, my whole life has been spent with a severely autistic sister. And I lived through the time when at first, autism wasn't even a thing, wasn't even a condition that schools or the government would help with, which led to my sister being diagnosed as severely retarded so that the people at the schools could help, and medical and therapy treatment could be provided by the state. Then in the 70's or so, autism became 'allowed' and it was its own, accepted, diagnosis. The idea that mothers caused it was refuted, thank the gods. Some really good help became available, good special schools, good teachers and helpers. My sister was able to stay in high school until she was 25. WA state paid for that, and the local teachers were usually pretty darn good. My sister worked sorting trash for years and years at a company which specializes in hiring people with disabilities, mental and/or physical, to do repetitive work that most other people will not do, and that was good too.

Then somehow, when I wasn't paying attention, autism has become popular. Not the severe level 3 autism, which most people don't seem to know about, of course. And so now, we're back to blaming the mothers because they took Tylenol when pregnant? Ohh, and blaming Tylenol too because $$. Yeesh.

Ok, here's the open thread! What's up, whatcha doing? Reading? Thinking? Remember, everything is interesting if you dive deep enough, so tell us about where you're diving!

* Note: I don't agree with the low IQ bit in the diagram of symptoms of level 3 autism. It might seem like level 3 autistics have low IQ because they can't communicate with us, or vice versa. But, I'm not sure they really have low IQ.

good morning
we are in day 2 of much needed gentle rains
ahh! keeping the dust at bay

your essay regarding 'autism' is interesting
have a neighbor who is obviously on the spectrum
he is a very decent individual, talented with mechanics,
and a trustworthy soul.

Not sure what causes this malady, but have a feeling
injected vax may have an influence. Stop requiring
children to be jabbed! They are too young to refuse,
so wait until the age of acknowledgement at least.

thanks for the OT!

my father. He was definitely on the spectrum. But, of course, he was born before there was a spectrum. He was incredibly smart, although so socially inept that his father (my grandfather) thought he'd amount to nothing. Image the surprise when my father was part of the team which started a successful company. Of course, he was the engineer, not the people person :).

like that. I do know, the first vaccines were pretty darn good. Kids died from measles before. And after the vaccines, it just about went away. However, I don't trust all the vaccines now, like the flu and so on.

I think the correlation of timing of vaccines with autism is without a lot of causation (for autism), because autism has become the 'thing' and so many people are diagnosed as being on the spectrum. And there's no real recognition of what actually causes autism, and no recognition that it existed before vaccines...

in the researchers and medical profession, a need to blame mothers because of at least one stone cold link to fathers. I just decided that I don't hav all day to work up a presentation style comment, so I thought I'd just throw out some facts that we all need to consider. First, "autism" is really ASD - autism spectrum disorder.

"Fragile x (chromosome) disorder" if often a factor linked to various types of "autism (spectrum disorder)" and the x chromosome is a very link in any developmental chain.

ASD is diagnosed far more in males than females.

A whole herd of disorders are far more likely when the male parent is less than 25 years old or greater than 35 years old, and especially when he is over 45 years old. There is no similar finding with respect to the age of the mathers.

"Autism" as a diagnosis or thing dates to the 1920s or so. The number of cases has grown ever since. In part because more and more shit is being declared to 1) exist and 2) be part of ASD, for example, ADHD. Also more and more kids are getting tested. We've always had these people, they used to be "slow kids" and before that "damaged" or "defective". How many per 100,000 is a complete unknown because a) there was nothing "official" to diagnose them with and b) there was a relative rarity of diagnoses due to a low frequency of the collision of all of the relevant factors such as somebody to do the diagnosis, a felt need for there to be some sort of medical diagnosis, the presence of alternative support systems where the kids would simply be kept at home and away from society, etc.

Correlation charts showing an increase in the incidence of ASD diagnoses with the incidence of any of a myriad of factors show nothing. Post hoc ego propter hoc fallacy. Correlation is not causation. The incidence of a vast number of things has increased radically and progressively throughout the modern era, vaccinations, flouridated water, commercial toothpaste, aspirin usage, electromagnetic radiation at home and away, noise, sanitation, pesticides, herbicides, hospital births, over-the-counter cold remedies, grain fed beef, hormone treated beef, dairy cows, pigs and poultry, hydrocarbons in the air and water, plastic, halocarbons, researchers, post-doc candidates, shrinks and sociologists, synthetic fibers, pavement, and on and on and on. It is more likely to be a combination of all them than to be any particular one of them.

ASD is a spectrum and is somewhat highly heritable while we are just beginning to realize that epigenics is a reality and something we don't really understand at all.

There is a near universal mental defect related to the conditions and preconditions for our survival back in the way back whereby we look for a single cause for each and every effect. That's why god did it became such a widespread answer for everything for which there was no obvious answer. Before we figured out to do and not do specific things we sacrificed to one or more deities even though they were clearly unreliable. It is not the case that every thing or effect has a specific single cause. Most stuff has, at some point, more than one contributing caqusal factor.

where if there were a plague they would blame this or that gor, or, sometimes, that weird kid that old lady jones had out of wedlock, and snuff him.

Weird kids used to be left out on mountops tyo die too.

Lastly, there are fewer miscarriages and still-births than there once were, and more and more people who never would have produced offspring are doing so thanks to advances in fertility treatment. Not saying that this is any kind of factor, but we don't know enought about anything to rule it out either

that post, EL- you saved me a lot of typing. I'm glad that my two-fingers-and-a-thumb typing is so slow...

Indeed, correlation does not imply causation. And at the same time that the childhood vax schedule has been unnecessarily bloated (in many cases, in the service of corporate profits rather than public health), a lot of other environmental things have gotten much, much worse as well.

There is obviously no reason for an infant to have a hepatitis vaccine, so I'm not disagreeing there. But over the same interval, we've seen the list of food additives/preservatives bloat by roughly the same proportion (also primarily in service of corporate profits rather than public health)- and very little testing has been done there, either.

Some of those food-borne environmental toxins are fairly bad juju as well- like the trace glyphosate in grains, for example. We simply don't know what all the contributors are, let alone being able to identify a specific "worst" contributor. And, since a healthy public isn't as profitable as an intractably-sick public, our corporations will never do the work to find out unless they are forced to do so.

Meanwhile, I'll just sit back with a bag of preservative-laden Doritos and a can of additive-laden energy drink, and celebrate my on-the-spectrumness: I got mine long before any of this new stuff became ubiquitous. One thing is certain: they won't figure out the actual primary cause of the current autism issue in my lifetime. Doing so would very likely hurt the bottom line of one or more major corporations, and We Can't Have That...

Autism is a subject I know a little about. It’s no longer just the non-verbal children flapping their hands. Instead, it is now considered a spectrum or a scale. Your child could fall anywhere on it. Both my children in their 40’s have been diagnosed with different forms of Autism. In fact, one was only diagnosed last year. One has ADHD-Au while the other has what used to be called Asperger’s Syndrome.

Both did extremely well in grade school. But middle School and High School was awful. I think that it was too much of a free for all for them to learn. They both like strict routines.

Being of the Baby Boomer generation, there was none of this knowledge while my children were in school. They both hold jobs and can function adequately most of the time.

And I never took Tylenol or drank during either pregnancy. I did take Prenatal Vitamins with Folic Acid, which has been standard for years, although I believe they might have increased the amount of Folic Acid needed during pregnancy.

That vaccine schedule is insane. My children were born in 81 and 82 and I know that they didn’t get more than 10 or 12 vaccines when they were young.

working in the yard, and one thing hit me. There is a lot of concern about the vaccination schedule, and legitimately so, but when I think back, I see something else.

I was early boomer, June '46, barely made the cutoff. I went to school with kids who had contracted and survived polio. I met or knew people who had had scarlet fever and smallpox. Damn near everybody I knew at one time or another caught mumps, measles, German measles (Rubella), and chicken pox, plus assorted influenzas and colds.

So, today, kids are given an MMR vaccine to deal with mumps, measles and rubella. This is concerning because they are exposed to all 3 things at the same time, but these are attenuated, dead or otherwise inactive versions. I was, no doubt, frequently exposed to all three in the form of contagious live viruses at the same time from kindergarden onwards and very probably earlier, and, at least once, each of them got me. In retrospect, what is the difference here, other than I had to deal with the actual live disease?

@enhydra lutris I'm a mid 60's Baby Boomer and I also had all of those diseases. And so did everyone in Grade School. The first vaccine I remember getting was the polio one. Both of my children have had chicken pox, at different times. I don't believe they had a vac for that when they were small. My aunt had German measles in the mid 60's while she was pregnant, and her baby was born with a severe hearing loss.

to have already had the MMR vaccine when I was going into first grade. It didn't exist, so I got to have measles, mumps, and chicken pox all over the space of 2 weeks- and it really did damn near kill me, with hallucination-level fever for several days running. No bueno.

I can see value in that vaccine, just as I can see value in the polio vaccine- you don't even have to suck it out of a sugar cube these days. I do not, on the other hand, see the necessity of giving vaccines against e..g. hepatitis to an infant. That doesn't pass the risk/benefit smell test.

The list of 90 vaccines needs to be given a detailed risk/benefit onceover by a panel of immunologists who demonstrably do not have financial conflicts of interest, whether through employment, stock ownership, the brother-in-law named Guido waiting to break all of the doctor's fingers in a nearby alleyway...

How this can be accomplished is unclear: but my personal belief is that well more than half of those vaccines can and should be delayed until well after the most important formative years. 6-month-olds arguably do not need to be vaccinated for STDs, for example: if they were going to be exposed, they'd have been exposed in utero- and then not again until they are approaching puberty. Maybe a vaccine for those issues makes risk/benefit sense *then*.

I think that what we have now is complete and utter regulatory capture of the public health mechanism by monied interests. I was hoping that Kennedy could put at least a dent in that- but if the outcome is simply to funnel that misdirected revenue stream to political cronies, I want no part of it. It is not looking good.

has told me stories about her schools as a kid. These were in the late 40's early 50's, before the MMR vaccine. She had a friend who almost DIED because of the measles. Another was disabled as a result of the measles. She was SO happy when I started going to school and the vaccines were given and no one was dying or becoming disabled.

in 2017:"We actually don't recommend using our products while pregnant." An overdose of it can cause liver failure and death. Acetaminophen is in many otc products, such as Nyquil, Dayquil, Alka-Seltzer, Excedrin, and Thera-Flu. Insisting on a warning on a label is not saying there is a direct link to autism.
What is in our bodies now that wasn't commonly in them is 1983? The list of poisons is long. The genetics as a cause has been under suspicion for years. Correlation is not causation, but does signal that studies should be done.
Vaccine skepticism is a result of distrust of the FDA. Every drug they have pulled off the market was initially approved by the FDA. Extending emergency authority for a vax, meaning the manufacturers have no liability, doesn't instill trust.

Back in the 60s,70s, and early 80s,as I battled with regaining liver function from 2% to 100% my regimen included up to 14 aspirin every other day. In the late 70s, in order to spare my stomach lining, the Dr. switched me to Tylenol. That I am alive is baffling. Needless to say, I do not trust doctors.
I don't think this current trend blames women. I think it blames Big Pharma.
Pregnant women out to prioritize their health, not their need to get even with Trump.
My heart goes ought to any family dealing with an autistic child/adult. We need to find out once and for all, why this occurs.
Thanks for the OT, chica!

I grew up in the middle of a cancer cluster: ~15% of my high school classmates did not survive to see their 30th birthday. Nobody has paid much attention to it in the literature, but I know that as downwinders, we experienced heavy fallout and snowout events after several specific aboveground test shots at the Nevada Test Site in the 50s and up until the '63 ban. Most of those classmates who passed prematurely did so from leukemias, but a good fraction experienced bone cancers and/or stomach cancers.

When I had that stomach tumor a few years ago, I thought that this had finally caught up with me as well. But mine wasn't malignant, and I got to keep most all of my stomach when they fixed it. So I count myself as one among the more fortunate...

My wife, from New England, grew up in the middle of the BASF superfund site in Lowell, MA. Their water supply was and is contaminated with hexavalent chromium, trichlorethylene, methyl-ethyl ketone, and a bunch of other yummy industrial solvents and byproducts. The tumors experienced by she and her classmates primarily involve the pineal and pituitary glands. The list of insults goes on and on, everywhere you look.

Downwinders certainly got the short straw, but only one of many: we aren't alone in having been involuntarily experimented upon in this great open Petri dish we call America. Realistically, everyone is a downwinder, in one way or another.

There's intense, ongoing rampant speculation in the aftermath of breaking news reports saying Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has called top US military leaders from across the globe to gather at a meeting next week at Marine Corps base Quantico - which lies some 30 minutes south of Washington D.C.

Washington Post cited over a dozen people familiar with the matter who described all senior officers with the rank of brigadier general or above have been summoned, including all Navy admirals, which will amount to some 800 top commanders being gathered. No explanation has been given by the Pentagon chief.

Despite President Trump this week having boasted that his administration has solved "seven conflicts" - it remains that the globe's biggest wars are still raging: Ukraine and Gaza. At the moment, European officials have been warning Russia that NATO is ready and willing to shootdown its warplanes if they breach NATO airspace.

What a great idea: put all of the military officers at or even near flag rank from all branches in one place all at the same time, and tell the world about it, just as we are standing on the brink of WWIII. What could possibly go wrong with that?

Tuesday, Sept. 30th, could be a very fraught day. This is a good case of a meeting that should have been an email. No smiley.

It interested in taking a look at the growing body of work regarding acetaminophen and autism?
The pace of research has increased since after decades of use there is now a better understanding of how the drug impacts pain control by altering sensory perception of pain.

It interested in taking a look at the growing body of work regarding folic acid and autism. and leucovorin (folinic acid) and autism

The potential of vaccines contributing to autism needs to be primarily researched on two issues which need to be ruled out as contributing factors.

First is overwhelming an immature immune system with vaccines a problem. Too high a dose, multiple vaccines at the same time and total number of vaccines before a specific age. (See current recommended CDC vaccine schedule for 0 to 18 months and 18 months to 18 years.)

Second is the various adjuncts added to boost immune response or preservatives added during manufacture directly contribute to autism or when combined with other medication, environmental factors and genetic markers.

None of this will probably impact your or my sister, but may improve someones else's life in the future.

None of this impacts my sister who was autistic from birth, with a mother who was NOT vaccinated as a kid or adult. Maybe a drug given during birth made my sister autistic? Or, maybe it's genetic. My father was definitely on the spectrum, very high functioning, very high IQ, but he was on it.

I listened to MacGregor talking about this earlier today. He said it didn't pertain to operational matters, but rather an agenda oriented toward ideological and personnel matters. Like getting rid of DEI, lowering the number of women in the military, reducing the number of flag officers, etc. Evidently MacGregor seemed to approve.

One other item I would add to Hegseth's list is his bs idea of meritocracy in the military. His idea of "meritocracy" is lean and mean, doing pushups and the like. In other words, himself. I think one of the funniest things I saw recently was Hogwash, and RFK, jr. having pushup and pullup contests in a gym with a bunch of soldiers.

I think they made an exception for absence of attending high ranking officers where the mission required it. As far as I know, OPCON commanders with nuclear war assignments, cannot be in the same place at the same time.

A secure video conference seems so much wiser for all concerned but it's such a grandstand play, you gotta love it. Who's gonna stand watch while Hegseth plays Napoleon?

And I don't think blaming the parents is a good thing, whether it's genetics, taking an aspirin, or not holding the baby enough (yea, I know, but that's the kind of blame my mother got) because one is a 'refrigerator mom' or whatever else. Much research needs to be done still, just as with tons of other things. And there are going to be lots of reasons for autism and I think the spectrum will be broken up into different kinds of autism, which is necessary. Those who are autistic because of a drug their mother, or they, took, or a vaccination they got are not the same as those who have genetic autism or autism from radiation or whatever it turns out to be. Dang, we humans know so much, but we have so much to learn about all sorts of things as a species, don't we?

@Sima for all kinds of nominally odd behaviors, such as being fidgety, having a short attention span, or a short temper.
I did see some graph somewhere today that showed most autism is in the US. That should be a starting point for research.
I have a client with a 45 yr old daughter who is ADHD, therefore on the spectrum. She had twins by some guy she met in a bar, both are non-verbal, unable to be left alone, and then another set of twins by another bar guy, same condition. G'parents are normal and high functioning. The G'parents care for 4 little kids that can't and will never say a word, can never be left alone, and can't wipe their butts or bathe themselves. The oldest twins are 8, the younger are 7. What meds were given to the mom? What illegal drugs did she use?
All I can think about is we didn't have some abrupt change in our genetics in this country in a specific year, but we did have an increase in autism that is growing, and it is now 1 in 7 in kids.
We have long accepted genetics and that is that. In the US. So, move along, nothing to see here.
I represent the G'parents pro bono. That's the least I can do for them and their family. I only wish I could do more.
