MAGA and Global Opinion

I know that Trump talks a lot about world opinion of America and he's going to restore it, but it appears now that MAGA doesn't actually care what the world thinks, and it's going to cost us all.

Donald Trump’s entire shtick as president is that America is being ripped off by foreigners. The U.S. is kicking people out, not letting them in. His administration has canceled the visas of hundreds of foreign students in U.S. colleges. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is basically telling the world that if you think the wrong way, we don’t really need you in the U.S.: “Visiting America is not an entitlement,” Rubio wrote in an opinion piece for Fox News. “It is a privilege extended to those who respect our laws and values.”

Even young and promising college students are being kicked out for no reason.

The Trump administration has revoked hundreds of student visas in nearly every corner of the country as part of a vast immigration crackdown – and few universities know why.

More than 1,000 international students and recent graduates at more than 130 schools in the US have had their visas or statuses revoked in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System this year, according to university statements and spokespeople.

Colleges and universities in 40 states have confirmed the visa and status termination of their students to CNN.

Where it's really going to cost us is in tourism, ans that will hurt us for decades.

But those estimates came out just before stories of harsh detentions at US airports, ensnaring travelers from countries like France and Germany, started making headlines. Major public institutions in Canada, including a pension management firm and a leading hospital, are now advising staff against traveling to the US.

Almost $20 billion in retail spending from international tourists in the US may be at risk, according to a Bloomberg Intelligence analysis.

Early signs of a sharp pullback are already showing up. Airfares, hotel rates and car rental costs fell in March, according to a monthly Bureau of Labor Statistics report on consumer prices published April 10. Economists at Goldman Sachs and HSBC Holdings Plc said lower demand, including from foreign travelers, probably played a role.

Omair Sharif, president of Inflation Insights, noted the decline in hotel rates was driven by an almost 11% drop in the Northeast in particular, possibly a result of fewer Canadians traveling there.

President Donald Trump said he was reluctant to continue ratcheting up tariffs on China because it could stall trade between the two countries, and insisted Beijing had repeatedly reached out in a bid to broker a deal.

Trump, speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, said officials he believed represented the Chinese leader Xi Jinping had sought to start talks. But he repeatedly sidestepped direct questions about whether he and Xi had been in direct contact.

245% tariff on China

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said it will pay no attention to United States President Donald Trump’s “tariff numbers game” after the White House suggested Chinese exports are facing tariffs of up to 245 percent.

This is obviously not working. Trade is completely frozen already. Trump can jack up tariffs to 500% it wouldn't make a bit of difference.

He doesn't understand why the Chinese don't love him the way he loves himself. Or, in this case, since (symbolically at least) the Donald is America, he doesn't understand why the Chinese don't love America the way he loves himself. The Donald, you see, is Narcissus, the man mentioned in Ovid's Metamorphoses who fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water.
