Saturday Open thread - 2/1/25: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people!

Hope everyone is in fine fettle.

Another hope is no declaration of WWIII this weekend, as we all have errands to run, shopping to do, etc..

The crew is coming to build a back room onto the house. Lots of windows to be able to see birds and deer, away from the hwy with loud tough trucks showing off their special non-existant mufflers, and just to see the back 10 acres of my property. Old oaks, beautiful fields of grass.

When the contractor called to confirm the crew would arrive Monday, we had just listened to a Stevie Ray and Jimmy Vaughan album. The contractor is their first cousin. RIP, Stevie Ray.

In about 3 weeks, we will see The Gypsy Kings in concert in Sugarland, Texas. Now, so you know, the city outside of Houston is pronounced "sugar land", not the typical way we "lund" the pronunciation anywhere else. Like most famous groups of yore, only 2 men from the original group remain. We lucked out that they were founders. This will be a edging toward tribute band, but not there yet.

I have had personal connections with gypsies when the were allowed to come to town in their horse drawn wagons, allowed to camp out for a few days. Yes, they did dance and sing around the campfire, and yes, they were tinkers, and yes, there was a fortune teller.

While touring Romania, we went through a town, the guide told us not to buy any copper pots, since those Gypsies sold fake copper. Strange that they didn't roam. They had what you might call mansions here and there.

You might be familiar with these tunes:

In March, we head to the Texas Hill Country to see Ray Wylie Hubbard yet again. I leave it to you to pigeon hole his musical genre. The most popular song he ever wrote was performed by Jerry Jeff Walker, which became one of his most popular songs, recorded at the dance hall in Luchenback, Texas.

Now, what gave the composer the idea to think up this these lyrics?

One of the most popular songs at his concerts is the one below. Non-Texans, if you haven't figured out by now he is being humorous and means no insults, I can't convince you. He is a transplanted Oklahoman himself. He mentions Stevie Ray... (we all do).

We will skip the Willie Nelson concert in New Braunsfel. I have seen him perform many times for free at honky tonks in Cut'n'Shoot Texas, can't see spending $322 for a ticket now. What he played back then before he went Outlaw, was this:

This one, and my brother dragged me from the hands of Faron Young's band who wanted me to visit Faron in his RV! No hard feelings, Mr. Young, if you get my drift!

This is an open thread, open to whatever you folks would like to discuss. The great joy of posting an OT is the fantastic lines of info and comment directions they take.

With that in mind, let 'er rip!

question everything

@QMS After courthouse closures for inclement weather and multiple holidays from November through January, February always gets jammed full of court dates. A very busy month, always.
The addition construction begins tomorrow. I will set up a PC, and make an office out of it. I have to bring my laptop to the porch and bring it in at night currently. It's the little things. Dear One is placing bird feeders at both ends, and we will place a deer feeder in the back pasture so I can keep up with the deer families.
Another plane crash, this time in North Philly. All 6 people on the plane died, and a street of row houses are on fire. I figure that will add to the body count.
After flying all over the world, I would be reluctant to board a plane today. Too many are blowing up, falling apart, too many problems with air traffic controllers.
Have a safe and fun weekend, Cap'n!

Gas is creeping up...$2.80 up from $2.70. Not too bad. However, I ordered a couple of loads of gravel to add to the road. Last year it was $800/load, now $900/load. So life is getting more expensive.

Good idea to build your addition now, cause construction is going nowhere but up. Sounds like a nice space y'all have planned.

Trade day was was a chilly 37F, but it is headed to 70F today and tomorrow. We're splurging and going to a nice restaurant up on the brow of the mountain tomorrow evening. Good food and a lovely setting. Hope to see the planet show from there...visible after dusk.

Everyone have a good weekend, and thanks for the OT!

“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

@Lookout The first construction price shock for us was my office re-construction in 2021. Building supplies were limited, item cost had ballooned. I was over-insured by at least $30,000, and still paid #35,000 out of pocket to get it finished. Ever since, the supply chains normalized, as did the high prices.
The tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China will impact most products we purchase at any type of store: business supplies, construction, food, fuel, furniture, and on and on. I have friends who disdain Walmart, but if I can buy the exact same item there that I could buy at a pricier store, I can hold my nose with the best of 'em.
I will furnish the room with a beautiful rug a friend gave me, a beautiful vintage chair I scored at a resale store, and a desk and chair from a used furniture store that stocks anything an office might need.
The goal is to balance the expenditures for home improvement projects against the time it takes me to get back to even on my savings account. At that time, I will consider retiring.
Wish I had known about the planet party! We could have made some plans, but we have little ambient light here, might get a decent view right here at home.
While you are splurging on your dining tonight, we will be doing the same right here. There is a new restaurant on main street that seems to be catching on with the locals.
Enjoy your weekend, and I wish you clear skies, dear friend!

@soryang I mentioned in a reply to QMS just now that I would not fly anywhere at this time. Something is wrong.
Let's keep an eye out for news about the people inside the row houses that are on fire.
If I could find any good news, I would post it. Maybe you can spot some ray of hope somewhere!
Have a great weekend, friend!

I had the good fortune to see SRV before he died. Such a great talent taken from us way to soon.

A little more goofy music from the Vaughan Bros. for the thread.

@Socialprogressive Starlings swoosh like brushstrokes across the sky in this dazzling short

A project by the Barcelona-born photographer Xavi Bou, Ornithographies finds beauty in the patterns that birds trace across the sky. In photographs and in short films, Bou condenses time by leaving impressions captured over several seconds as single frames. This process forms images that offer wondrous new perspectives on birds and their behaviours. In his short film Murmurations, Bou documents a sight familiar to many – starlings moving across the sky, en masse – and, by echoing the impressions of these hundreds of birds, builds spellbinding visuals at the intersection of science and art, and human and nonhuman creation.https://aeon.co/videos/starlings-swoosh-like-brushstrokes-across-the-sky...

@la58 Thanks, friend!
My home is a mile away from a huge lake, and another about 30 miles away. Each morning, hundreds of various species of water fowl fly over to go 30 miles to the lake that isn't polluted. They eat there all day, return before dark to their nests. Last night was a lovely clear, blue sky, and I watched them fly over for at least 10 minutes. The shapes and patterns looked choreographed.
Birds. Gotta love 'em!

@enhydra lutris and good damn grief.
I watched a Dr. Michael Yeadon video last week wherein he states unequivocally, as he has for the last 4 years, that there is no such thing as a viral pandemic. Much the same as Geert Vanden Bossche.
I also saw an interesting video about propaganda, using COVID responses as an example. The professor said the basic foundation of propaganda is confusion. Example: No masks, then a mask, then 2, then 1. Wear a mask into a restaurant. Remove it when seated. Put it back on if walking from the table. Stand 6 feet apart. Sometimes 9 feet. Then get into a crowded bus, train, plane, but not concert venue seating.
A friend went to Vegas. Mask required, smoking allowed, but only lift the mask when taking a puff or exhaling. Casino workers would remove smokers who did not comply.
Confusion groundwork was a rip roaring success.
I am confused enough without some NGO screwing with me!
Enjoy your weekend and I hope getting back into the home routine has been graceful after your wonderful vacation, dear friend!

warning in place, presumably because we are supposed to have back to back atmospheric rivers. It did rain all of yesterday and sio far today, but not severe or even heavy rain, but I think that is supposed to be incoming. We, however, are at elevation, so the most it will do is mess with shopping trips, and we already hit farmers' market this morning.

We managed to stay oblivious to the news while we were out of the country except for the KC football victory, so there is that, though my in-box is overflowing with stuff, most of which I'm simply deleting unread. It will be interesting to see just how far the orange dotard will go with his tariffs and how long he will stick with them. Allegedly they will start today, but it remains to be seen if he can implement them yet.

Anyway, it is good to be home and back online again.

In a statement, The Hague Group said: "We, the representatives from the governments of Belize, plurinational state of Bolivia, Republic of Colombia, Republic of Cuba, Republic of Honduras, Malaysia, Republic of Namibia, Republic of Senegal and Republic of South Africa in The Hague, Netherlands, on this 31st day of January 2025, inaugurate The Hague Group."

At a press conference attended by representatives from all nations, the group announced its aims to:

Any leader who constantly complains about Israel’s genocide should put their power to where their mouths are.

It’s a good start, but it should have happened a year ago.

For bringing a lawsuit against Merck and its dangerous HPV vaccine.

It was fast tracked to approval in 2006 after only testing it on 1,200 girls which only 27% actually got the vaccine. And it was only monitored for 14 days. Good lord!

Caroline Kennedy’s hit job on Bobby showed that she too is a pharma shill who believes that the vaccine actually protects boys and girls from the virus. It doesn’t. Period.

https://www.globalresearch.ca/the-case-against-hpv-vaccines/5878609

Among her concerns was that no data showed that Gardasil’ immunity remains effective after 5 years. A truly effective HPV vaccine, on the other hand, would need to be efficacious for 15 years in order to prevent cervical cancer. And that too is misleading. The median age for early diagnosis for cervical cancer is age 50 and cervical cancer’s median mortality age is 58. Moreover, cervical cancer only represents less than 3 percent of all cancers and represents approximately one hundredth of the US population.

Next act for Kennedy should be why babies are vaccinated at birth for hepatitis.

This is why big pharma has their attack dawgs trying to discredit Kennedy.

Warren's big donor is Pfizer. She made almost as big an ass of herself questioning RFK,Jr. as Bernie "onesie" Sanders.
All testing and studies done for any medical product is paid for by the manufacturer. Biased and untrustworthy clinical conclusions are literally paid for by the product manufacturer.
Glad I don't have kids.
But, you, missy, have a dawg!
John D. Rockefeller bought off Medical schools back around 1910 or so. We have followed his plan ever since.
Caroline is being a really shitty relative. Wish we could see her investment portfolio.

As the article says any immunity will wear off before the babies are exposed to the virus. And doctors would know if mom had hepatitis. It’s all risk no reward.
