Open Thread - 10-11-24 - World War III: Causus Belli?

Are the proxy wars in Ukraine and the Mideast about propping up the failing US dollar and world hegemony?

Yes, probably, but with a caveat.

In a world that is experiencing resource depletion and most probable peak oil, what will be the most valuable resource in the near future?

World War III will be about oil and gas. It's all about energy, the lifeblood of world economies, and those who would be king of the world.

What commodity is Russia sitting on? How about the Mideast? Venezuela?

If the US can control the majority of remaining oil and gas reserves around the world, then it will be top dog, even if the dollar dies as the world currency.

It's the best hedge against loss of hegemony, the world will beat a path to the door of the Oil King.

It could also be why China is going all in for renewable sources of energy, mainly solar and wind.

The chess pieces are being moved and the next world paradigm is in the balance. That is, if anyone survives this global game of chicken.

scary times, is it really worth it to blow up the world to hold on to
the steering wheel? Simplicus opined:

"Today, at least 16 tanker aircraft were spotted at the American Al-Udeid airbase in Qatar, which may indicate that Israel is fully prepared to strike Iran in the coming hours
However, OSINT channels say that the most likely date is tomorrow - October 11."

If Iran cannot prevent this strike, then it must launch a simultaneous counter-retaliatory strike at the moment when Israeli and US aircraft take off en masse. If Iran misses this strike, it may no longer have the opportunity to launch a retaliatory strike.

Guess we can't depend on Nutsy to back down.

Thanks for the OT!

on the scales of logic.

Russia is the aggressor for attacking a neighboring state and is vilified by the West.

Israel attacks several of it's neighboring states and is given carte blanche by the West.

Someone has their thumb on the scale.

I would have thought the upcoming wars would be about farmland and water. Pre-Maidan, Ukrainian land could not be sold to non-Ukrainians.

the Nord Stream pipelines being blown up. Russia and Ukraine targeting each others energy infrastructure. The concern over Israel targeting the oil fields in Iran. Just to mention a few indicators. They may target what's above ground, but they covet what's below ground.

Modern civilization runs on energy, a finite resource.

@JtC and needs to be overthrown and then, we get all the Syrian oil! USA! USA! It's magical!
MSM isn't reporting much about Russian having evidence that the US and UK blew up Nordstream !.
You'd think that would be important news, but Obama made a speech in Pennsylvania. Speeches matter!

If you don't see your disaster here, it may not be declared for individual assistance. Please check back later.

Milton isn't on the EEMA declared disaster are list (yet)?. The news programs, now that we are at friend's home, that has power and no flooding, are showing state, county, executive agency chiefs, and politicians bragging about their recovery efforts. Ms. So called 911 last night to have someone come get me out of my flooded home, she had already left the day before to save the car. I thought I could maybe save or mitigate some damages. That was hopeless. It was an Ian replay, except the winds were worse. Take a number, maybe 300, and we'll get back to you. So if one was physically disabled or on oxygen or other support, they gave them priority. That's fine. Good thing my friend and his son-in-law were willing to go out in the max flooding conditions yesterday, to come and get me with a paddle board and a kayak. I took what I could, and smokey. The Kayak and surfboard fit in Ms So's van. They launched from about a half mile or so from the closest dry point. Some young guys we encountered on the way, asked if they could float a cage with a huge pit ball and two smaller dogs to the dry point on a nearby road. They put them on the paddleboard, and then some fan boat with police on it, showed up and agreed to take them away.

The police never called back. I just went by the neighborhood dry area, and the flooding hasn't gone down at all. We need to get more essential items we missed during the hurricane. Can't get in there yet.

Have to go. Someone at FEMA needs to declare the disaster area, and update the web site. Oh do it on the Ap. Yeah right

@soryang
FEMA is proof positive that this government is a joke and where it's priorities really lie. I feel for you, brother.

My best friend just a few weeks ago sold his house in Illinois and bought a new one in Sebring, Florida. His moving trip from Illinois to Florida was held up for 3 days in Chattanooga, Tennessee because of Hurricane Helene. He finally made it to Sebring and got to hang in his new house for a couple of days and then up popped Milton. He bugged out early and went to Lake City, Florida to wait out Milton in a hotel while his wife's family bugged out from Sarasota and stayed at his new home in Sebring.

I checked and Highlands County, where Sebring is, lucked out from the massive flooding but all of the county is without power. I don't even want to call him to see how he's doing. I can just imagine what's going through his mind.

You're on your own is right, my friend. Take care and please hang in there.

@JtC

The news people finally noticed that the water bodies in the area, particularly streams and rivers aren't going down, and still present a flood hazard.

I'm not sure it's just rivers. I always thought of Halifax River as a salt water body, but I guess it's brackish, I think the water table in the region isn't going down for the same reason. Guess I will have to wait around for a few days before I can go back and get some clothes and other essential items out of what's left. I thought I had brought the insurance papers, but in the confusion I left them somewhere I can't remember when I was being rescued. Thank god for the friendly and generous people helping us.

The two American atomic bombs that were dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 killed approximately 120 000 people. A comparable number died later of burn and radiation injuries. It is estimated that 650 000 people survived the attacks. These survivors are known as Hibakusha in Japanese.

The fate of the survivors was long concealed and ignored. In 1956, local Hibakusha associations along with victims of nuclear weapons tests in the Pacific formed The Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organisations, shortened in Japanese to Nihon Hidankyo. This grassroots movement soon became the largest and most widely representative Hibakusha organisation in Japan.

Nihon Hidankyo has two main objectives. The first is to promote the social and economic rights of all Hibakusha, including those living outside Japan. The second is to ensure that no one ever again is subjected to the catastrophe that befell the Hibakusha.

Through personal witness statements, Nihon Hidankyo has carried out extensive educational work on the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons. Hence the motto “No more Hibakusha”.

It may be around the corner. Too bad we egg on all the conflict, as you suggest, for oil and power.

Hope your fall is unfolding well.
