Open Thread - Thurs 22 Aug 2024 : Meat Avatars?

Meet the Meat Avatar!

Yes, that is what we all are, we are meat avatars! Or, we are going to be meat avatars as soon as the AI stuff is advanced enough.

An article on the Vice website about a meat avatar (aka a human named Victor Miller) who is helping an AI person/thing named VIC (Virtual Integrated Citizen) run for mayor in Cheyenne, Wyoming, really made me laugh in an ironic, 'what's next?' kinda way.

Miller, the meat avatar for VIC, is serious about VIC being the mayor. In another article he explains how he is going to let VIC do the voting and make the decisions as mayor. Miller will have a camera pointed at his computer all the time, so anyone can see VIC making the decisions, as Miller the meat avatar feeds the relevant information about whatever issue(s) to VIC.

One can 'meet the candidate' and find out about VIC's positions on some issues in this other article from Cap City News.

AI VIC and Victor Miller, from cowboystatedaily.com.

Unfortunately, maybe, VIC lost... yesterday. Or maybe that should be fortunately he lost. I'm quite happy with what the title of that article says about voter preferences being for human candidates: 'Cheyenne's 'AI for mayor' concedes after voter turnout shows overwhelming preference for human decision-making'.

Is this our future? Humanity's future? Being meat avatars for AI? I don't know. I think I'll probably have passed on before that future hits, but who knows? Obviously, many, many people do not want to be a meat avatar. I bet it'll take laws and regulations to keep AI out of places that humans want and need to control. Although, can the humans even agree about those things they want and need to control?

Anyway, thanks for reading! Here's the open thread - remember, everything is interesting if you dive deep enough, so tell us about where you're diving!

Funny, clever, but AI is encroaching everywhere. I am being urged by marketers to fire my secretary because an AI "person" accommodates clients much more warmly than a real person.
Oh, well, must get to court. This is an all day trial day. Ugh...
Thanks for the OT, chica!

Are they insane? Yep, they are. Hope the trial went well, and didn't last all day (we can hope, can't we?). Have a great weekend, my fellow meat avatar.

"boy in the bubble" syndrome and assorted other physical disabilities. She lives in a more or less sealed suite. Since she's never been able to go out and play, or even to indulge in many forms of play in her suite, she has spent most of her waking life reading. You realize that this might make her an enormusly valueble assistant at a lot of things and so you interview her to try to determine what she is best suted for. After several hours, you return home to decide what is feasible. You do not suspect for a moment that she isn't what she is represented to be because she seems totally human, even if a bit socially and emotionally stunted due to her isolation and lack of interaction with the physical world like walking in the outdoors and all that. So, is she human or not?

This is, or course, the

Turing Test

originally conceived of as a test for inteligence, based on the misconception that humans, and only humans, possess "intelligence", whateverthehell that is. Is there any other test she should have to pass, and why is such test relevant? Maybe we should demand a DNA sample, but how is that relevant to her ability to interact with and advise or teach you or me? (keep in mind that Edward Teach, Elizabeth Bathorney, Vlad the Impaler, and thousands of other horrible specimens were undeniably "human")

@enhydra lutris
honestly, it's easy enough to make computers intelligent. Can we make them empathetic? Mean? Cruel? Kind? Loving? Sweet? Variable? Pissed off when they twisted their ankle yesterday and it hurts still? (Been there, done that). Not just humans, but live animals have these capabilities. So can we make computers into animals? If we do, does that make us gods?

Actually, since the Maidan coup, it was their terrorist attacks against the civilians in Donbass and Luhansk that were part of the reason for the Special Military Operation. Now they're losing ground in the Donbass like crazy and losing armor and troops in Kursk big time, they have to be desparate.

that if Ukrainian was close to losing the war then they would resort to terrorism in Russia. And here we are. One reason stated for the Kursk invasion was to terrorize Russian civilians.
Of course America is fully behind this tactic because it loves to use the terrorists it funds and arms as its proxies.

she is promising to fix or pass. Like what Obiden, Pelosi and Biden promised to fix when they ran, but never did.

She has the power to at least try to pass those things now. Reminds me of when Pelosi sent 400 bills to McConnell knowing he wouldn’t even bring them up for a vote, but once dems took power she just forgot about them. Seriously how can people not see this game?

Don't buy it. The opportunity was lost, as Biden said: nothing will change.

I can't even imagine that, I just can't. So many people are so ... I dunno, blind? Willfully blind? Or maybe, in truth, they don't want anything to change. One of my best friends told me yesterday she'd spent the last several days watching the convention and she thinks everything is going to be fine. My jaw dropped.

Florida held its primary last Tuesday. I would have preferred an AI candidate in some of the races. My County Commission had 3 former cops on it. Now 2 of them are gone. Bye Bye. Matt Gaetz got reelected. No surprise there, even though there is talk about him running for Governor next time.
