~~ "Looking Toward Moscow"

On July 15, 1240, Alexander Nevsky, Prince of Novgorod led a Novgorodan army to bictory over invading Swedish forces at the battle of the Neva, earning himself the title of Nevsky.

On July 15, 1806, Zebulon Pike set off to map the Western and Southern portions of the Louisiana Purchase, recently acquired, though indirectly, from Napoleon Bonaparte.

Said Napoleon Bonaparte, roughly a month after Wellington and Blücher ended his career, surrendered on July 15, 1815 to The British aboard the HMS Bellerophon which was blockading the French coast and thereby preventing his escape to the USofA.

Linda Ronstadt is special to mon mari et moi. This song is on our wedding playlist was one of the first songs in the order sung by a local artiste and expressed our feelings as they grew.

Anything sung with Aaron Neville is to me super.

And

Their easy falsetto are matched as is their vibratto. My goodness Linda is such a consummate artist, with unparalleled breath, control and mastery of so many genres. Her Christmas album where she sings classical choir music and blends right in with the choir is wonderful.

But one of my favorite albums is Canciones de mi Padre. Those long sustained notes Mexican singers employ are shows of singing strength. She more than holds her own.

We used to live in a pear growing region on the East side of Mt. Hood. The Mexican pickers would come in to pick and process pears each late Summer/Fall. They would put music on their car players and leave the doors open. I so miss their serenades.

Our weather this year has been sooo unusual: we have had T-storms almost every afternoon or evening. Very wet, and cool with brief bursts of hot summer days. We have seen night skies only a handful of times in two months. some of our cloudbursts literally qualify as 'tempetes'. The last one a few nights ago scared many of us including locals. Having a stone house in these cases are a good thing.

Then there is ahem, mold, bugs, and lots of lush weeds, brush, and tree growth. This is the year I picked to grow sweet corn, as it's not commonly found here. My own would be better. We shall see.

E L thank you so much for your fabulous playlists and notes of interesting dates in history.

Hope all is well and you weather has moderated. Take care and thanks for all the music and the OT!

@soryang

I too am very skeptical about this. If true, there's going to be one sniper named Willis either unemployed, or more likely dead, very soon.

However, also if true, then I'm even more worried for RFKjr now, since apparently Biden finally relented and is going to allow him SS protection. If "protection" actually means "don't fire until some nameless boss-type in Langley says so", he'd be better off without it. That is only one step removed from the SS people being directly instructed to off the protectee themselves.

Think of it this way: it now comes down to whether or not "issuing extremely specific instructions on action and inaction to the SS minions" falls under the newly-created class of Presidential activities that is protected by the latest supreme court ruling. Can the President define rules of engagement that deliberately end up with the protectee getting ventilated by the lone-wolf du jour (the let-it-happen-anyway thing)? If telling the SS management to let their protectee get Freedumbed is now defined as a non-actionable Presidential decision, covered by his usual and customary executive duties blah blah blah, things might get just a little bit dicey.

There is far too much wiggle room in that ruling for me to be comfortable with it. Consider a previous Chief Executive simply having John Yoo write up the Torture Memos to cover his butt. He just asked for a memo to be written, and who could possibly have foreseen what would happen if someone took it literally? Oopsie. "We tortured some folks". Oh, well, collateral damage. Byegones...

That sort of thing would appear to be A-OK now.

Yes, I am that cynical. This needs to be investigated, and not by any of our 2- or 3-letter agencies. I don't know who has the gravitas to do it, but letting these assholes investigate themselves will be meaningless. And it will be difficult for one to establish "standing" with the Court to allow a challenge, if in fact one is dead...

The court ruled that a president can’t be charged for doing his duty.

It ruled that if it isn’t his defined duty then he can be charged.

If congress has a problem with a president then can impeach him. If the senate doesn’t convict he can’t be charged after leaving office. If they do convict then he can possibly be charged…depends on the crime.

Presidents don’t have any new powers to do whatever the hell they want.

Hasn’t ANYONE read the decision?

and my reading differs- primarily because I have seen the myriad ways that many legalisms can be used, misused, abused, worked around, and basically ignored.

I can’t find a way to properly express this thought: I do not believe that any of these high level “legal minds”, all of whom have who have gorged themselves at the public trough for their entire careers, will follow any “rules” whatsoever- given that they to a man do not believe that rules actually apply to them. The torture papers were just a start.

But I’ll shut up now. The subtext here is that I have nothing at all to worry about if I simply trust in the sanctity of our government’s demonstrated, careful, and detailed regard for the law. I disagree. Good day.

imho those three seemed too quick to lend credibility to whoever it was that made the claims.

So far haven't seen a diagram of the location and where all the actors were positioned. Was the rooftop shooter in a position where he could actually have targeted Trump or fired a bullet that grazed Trump's ear?

The speculation so far seems off to me. The reports that the identified shooter was seen and reported by many is also suspect.

the staging of it sets off my spidey sense. Is Trump such a showman that he could recover that quickly while SS is still in active shooter protective mode?

Two security snipers on one rooftop while another building and the rooftop are totally open and unprotected? Accessible to an armed kid intent on shooting at something or someone at the rally. Weird.

wannabe assassins and mass killers are only ever loner nutcases. Except when they aren't, but that's so rare that the LEOs go with the odds. In this situation - a crowd of 2nd amendment freaks - the risk of concealed carry, wannabe heroes whipping out their own guns and creating more havoc and injuries was higher than the possibility of more than one shooter. Thus the need to calm the crowd as quickly as possible. And should a wannabe hero have gotten off a shot and hit anyone, the SS, FBI, etc. will make sure all the bullets retrieved came from the identified shooter's gun.

@soryang two interviews with photographer.

Associated Press photojournalist Evan Vucci has extensive war experienced jumped into action, photos upoload almost immediately and selected for publication by the news agency. Ironically the Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima photograph is keeps being mentioned in the same breath was also taken by an Associated Press photographer, Joe Rosenthal.

Behind the Cover: Interview With the Photographer of the Trump Image Time July 15, 2024

It was a situation where that vast experience absolutely does [prepare you]. To have that experience behind you sort of allows you to remain calm. It wasn't the first time I was in that situation. So I was able to keep my head, I was able to think. I was able to compose pictures. I think all of us were there and we just stayed in the moment, stayed on the story. In my head, I just kept saying to myself, ‘slow down, slow down. Compose, compose.’ Okay, what's gonna happen next? What's going on here? What's going on there? Just trying to get every angle on it.’”
...
“In the moment it's weird because your brain is basically shut off. You're just thinking about, ‘Okay, what's my composition, or where’s light coming from? Is my exposure good?’ Do I need to move to the right? Do I need to move to the left?’ Because you got to be able to see his face. So when he started pumping his fist, I was surprised. And then I saw the blood on his face. And then I knew once I saw that, I knew I had at least a news storytelling image. I knew I had something. So I felt good. At least something was in the bag.”
On the technical process

Vucci’s cameras were tethered to a hotspot connection, so while all of this was happening, he’s able to click a button and instantly send photos from his camera to his editors. “Today, the [media] landscape is all about speed, so all still photographers that shoot news are doing the same sort of process. Something will happen in front of my lens, and it'll be on the AP wire within a minute or two.”

Information happens fast, disappears fast and several narratives have been tried since the shooting. Now some of the disappeared information is being shown on MSN sites and articles. Amazing how personal phones with camera keep knee-capping the tentative story narratives with citizen observations. The cycle speed appears to be faster than any event in recent history.

@Marie1 Simplicius(Substack), Jeff Childers(Substack), Erik Prince(own website), of Black Rock, and one more I just forgot, have shown overhead shots, probably Google maps terrain view or drone shots with highlighter markups to show where President Trump was speaking; where the LE snipers were positioned and where the shooter was located.

From everything I've seen the shooter was outside the 400 foot perimeter but within 150 yards of Trump with a straight shot. The fireman, family man who was killed was between the shooter and Trump.

Too many coincidences to believe: ladder sitting in just the right spot to get to the roof of an agricultural or industrial building; no Law Enforcement on the roof or positioned so anyone trying to get there would have been seen and stopped; bystanders trying to get Secret Service and local police to notice and do something about the guy climbing to the roof with a rifle and then positioning himself for the shooting - no response; snd so much more.

It does sound like the sniper was lined up having seen the shooter arriving on the rooftop. He tried to get permission to shoot, but he said it was denied. Hope we find out about this.

Google maps convince me of nothing other than the security snipers were well positioned to take down the rooftop shooter. The angle from the rooftop to the center of the stage is poor. Will wait for someone more experienced at analyzing such things and can more precisely locate all the actors at the time the shooting began. (So far, at the risk of being wrong, not buying that a bullet grazed Trump's ear.)

I never heard of the 13th Floor Elevators at the time in late 60's or early 70's, guess I was still too young. Or they didn't crack through in L.A. Love that jug sound with reverb or something... had to be the first electric jug. Very creative band, and poor Roky caught bad breaks.
