Friday Night Photos Woodie Nirvana Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 09/29/2023 - 5:00pm
Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
Last Saturday I went to Moonlight Beach in Encinitas for Wavecrest: The Grand Daddy of all Woodie Meets. If you're into Woodies it was the place to be. Woodie sedans. Woodie wagons. Woodie hotrods. Woodie 4x4s. Even the Brits got into the act with a Morris Minor Woodie. If it was on wheels and had wood on it, it was there.
Comments
woodies are cool
did some restoration work on an old Ford woodie for a local collector
he told me during the "war years" metal was at a premium
so the auto manufacturers substituted wood for metal panels
It all turned south when some designer genius decided to apply
vinyl stickers over metal to approximate faux woodie appearance
they did have a certain tendency to peal (instead of appeal)
thanks for the shots social!

Hi, QMS.
Whatever the reason for using wood, it turned out to be a really good look. I agree the faux wood vinyl stickers absolutely sucked.

My woody is bigger than Dole's.
So amazed any politician would shill for ED meds.
My grandmother knew Dole from her school days.
Said he was an asshole.
I didnt mind poking fun at him back in his twilight campaigns.
A car with fake wood

My mother the car
reminds me of this old 60' sitcom
no worries if you are too young to remember this
as it was just another Hollywood attempt at inanity
Like car 54 where are you and Mr. Ed (remember the Studebaker?).

I guess a show about a talking horse wasn't enough. We had to have one about a talking car, too.

Hi Q
I always thought vinyl was a bit unnatural and tacky looking. I've seen a couple recent floors using contemporary vinyl here, and I could appreciate them for their interest in colour as well as practicality.
Nice pics of Woodie Nirvana!
I think I like the Fletcher's Delivery Van the best, probably because part of it is painted a tone of red that I adore!
I have not been able to be online for Fridays for a few weeks, until now, so I'm sorry I've missed being here for the Friday Night photos. I've been holding the following pic of two tiny frogs on a pepper for posting... so here it is!

Sima, that is so cool!

It's good to see you around again! I hope things are going a lot better for you and yours than they were a while ago!

so madam
would you care for poivre vert with your
pattes de grenouille?

Eep!
None of these frog's legs, please! The frogs are about 3/4 of an inch long, if that. Their legs are threadlike! However, if we could eat their loud croaks... can hear those three or four rooms away!
I wonder if the pepper used for poivre vert is jalapeno pepper?

Thank you for identifying the size
It makes them even sweeter, and I don't mean in a culinary way.
My understanding of green pepper, if you mean peppercorns, is that they are immature black peppercorns. I've tried several times using them in place of black pepper, but because I like robust peppery things I find them too mild and the fragrance is also different. The green ones though must enhance certain dishes, but I haven’t tried it enough to find them.
I haven't tried a lot of green pepper...
either, as in not dried/aged black pepper. That's probably because, in part, in the area of the US where I'm from, green pepper almost always refers to the tomato related peppers like bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, etc. The froggies are sitting on a jalapeno pepper, doing aphid cleanup work, like the good froggies they are!

As a chili pepper lover
I recognise the jalapeño. Lucky you to have such charming pest control ; ).
Hi, Sima
Glad you're able to stop by tonight. Very nice shot of the frogs. Well worth the wait.

Hi Sima
Thank you for saving that very sweet photo for tonight, when you could be here.
Those tiny frogs are so well camouflaged. It must have been a wonderful moment of recognition for you all, and fun for us ; ).
The frogs are great!
We got some rain for the first time since Spring, more a misting than real rain, a few weeks ago. After that, the peppers got overrun with aphids as often happens when the season is winding down and the weather is changing. A day or two later, and there were about 30, at least, frogs in the greenhouse and all the aphids were... umm, yummy, I guess :). Nature will often help, if we let it!

Nice Treefrogs Sima!
I am going with Treefrogs from the genus Hyla. For all the dough, final answer. I am not sure which ones you have up your way. Would have to go to bookshelf...
great image!

Yep, Pacific Tree Frogs :)
According to Wikipedia, they got split into a new genus in 1986, but they were Hyla for a long time! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_tree_frog So you were spot on!

Great pic, Sima!
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
Hi Social
I like #9 woody, for its shape and colour. I also think the exterior sun shade is a great feature. I can imagine that it is more practical than the interior one. I'd like to see those decals closely, they must add an interesting personal touch.
Thank you for posting and hosting. Friday photography is always a pleasure.
Hi, Janis
I too like the color and shape of #9, a 1950 Ford. The exterior sunshade seemed to be a common feature for a lot of cars back then.
Here's a close crop of the decals.

Thanks Social
I can only make out the american flag, and surfboard-like moon decals ; ).
Is this better?

That is MUCH better Social
I will enjoy looking into the clearly defined decals at some point, thanks!
Hi all
From this week of dizzying weather, a few moments of calm. I know Spring is always changeable everywhere by nature, but presently it feels uber-changeable, with stronger weather changes from minute to minute.
Be well all, and enjoy the weekend.
Beautiful shots, Janis
The color, textures and patterns in the first shot are very captivating. The weather here has been out of the norm around here for most of the year. Rain in the forecast for this weekend which is out of the norm for this time of year.

great pics Janis!
Beautiful photos! I love your lines in the sand. They could be Rorschach tests. Wonderful images!
be well!

Those are gorgeous pics...
The first one, made me think of an arm, covered in liquid silver. So cool! So cool!

Nice that you referred to it looking like liquid silver,
as that is also how I see it. Even though the image is a digital colour image it brings to mind the genuine silver that is integral to b&w film and prints with which my photographic exploration began.
the sand sculptures you capture
are amazing
looks like hand of some sea creature
coming ashore to scratch the beach
the plant looks like a tree in a way
with the background
thanks for the shots

Oh Q, thank you
I sometimes think, as I'm observing the constantly changing shapes and lines and textures of the beach, that they're all created by the hand of god-like life and change.
Hi pixelators
Howdy SP!
GREAT photos, of great woodies! Very cool man!
If you grow up in beachcites socal learning guitar, you learn pipeline and walk don't run.

Thank you dystopian
Surfing must be universally an aspect of island living. The music you posted made me think about how unique the rhythms must be from coast to coast.
Hi, dystopian
I love a good cover and this is a great cover of the Chantays.

Hey SP
Check out everything she does, it is all awesome if you ask me. She is great. I love the sound of the instrument, and especially the creativity of doing western music with it. She does a great Layla among many others.
When I play pipeline, there are a few parts where a note is left open and held for few seconds. After the run down on the bass string and you hit that high open E and let it ring. I quickly take hands off the guitar and go into 'surfing with the alien' position for that period, jumping back on it at the right time. I did my stupid pet trick here where they don't see a lot of surfin'. One says in the heaviest Texas hillbilly accent you can imagine "I ain't never seen it done like that". His buddy replied "He SAID he was from California!" Totally explaining why I played guitar like a nut.
take care!

Dystopian, for posting Luna. I hadn't browsed through, my google mix of gayageum/zither tunes in a while. It' such enjoyable listening. Stayed up too long last night, reminding myself of how pleasant it was.
This wikipedia entry below may answer your question. There are a number of related instruments from several Asian cultures, like the Japanese koto. I not really familiar with those.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gayageum
Looking at the traditional Chinese characters (hanja) for gayageum 伽倻琴 in the wikipedia description, the first two are the characters identifying the early Korean Gaya Kingdom, and the last character means stringed instrument.

Hi all, Hope it's all good
Hi all, Hope it's all good out there!
Here is a quickie pic...
This is a Long-tailed Weasel, aka Masked Ermine. This one was in desert near Palmdale, CA, about '91 maybe. Up in a Cottonwood Tree, pic of a slide, so degenerate. In northern parts of their range they get white coats in winter, but not in the south. This is a stealthy animal I have only seen a very few of in tens of thousands of hours bumbling around in nature. This one ran right by me and bolted up the tree. I was just glad it stopped to see what I was. BAM! My only image of one. The Euro version is the Stoat, or Short-tailed Weasel, is slightly smaller. Had a wild one (Long-tailed) as a pet in the house for a year or so when I was a kid. It was one of the 'do not handle' pets (like the occasional rattler), and had been certified rabies free. By the guy that got bit grabbing it and not getting rabies. That one came out of a harvested tomato field in Huntington Bch. CA.

I can just imagine your facedown
The stealthy meeting the bumbling ; ).
I discovered in Germany that the common stoat can eat through rubber wiring under the car hood and disable the car's function. I had no idea it was related to the ermine of royal value.
Erimine = weasel :)
Yeah same species, when in the winter coat it is called Ermine. Because they could not sell weasel stoles.

Thank you dystopian, for all the laughs
Weasel gets a bad rep considering its winter transformation ; ).
P.S. J
But I do it all out there, Imma full immersion type of guy. I have been known to traipse about as well, and if I have my butterfly net, you might see me flailing about.

Imagining you traipsing and flailing and bumbling
is too far a stretch for me ; ).
Deleted double
Cute little critter
Glad it was kind enough to let you get a shot of it to share with us.

Ermine! Stoat?
I've only seen one or two of these. I think one, once, got into the chicken coop (before we learned to secure the chickens with a closed protected coop at night) and had a bit of a party. I like them still, anyways! Nice old pic!

This bird had a great view
This is overlooking Donkey Beach on the East shore of Kauai.
Hi Hindsight
I didn’t have much experience of the East Side of Kauai. I visited a beach in Anahola only a couple of times, so that part of the coastline is mostly unfamiliar to me.
The three years I lived on Kauai left such a lasting impression, and I am always appreciative of your photos and experiences which bring me back to such a pleasurable time and place.
It looks like a frigate bird to me, which I was introduced to on Kauai, and always found a bit mysterious, as well as a bit intimidating, soaring so high and with such a strong raptorial presence.
I was on Kauai when hurricane 'Iwa' hit.

Great pics, gang! jb's top photo
has that painting look to it. What is that plant in the bottom one? Sp, I love the woody theme. More than familiar with them as I have Beach Boy original LPs. My fave of yours is that one of the front interior with the stuff around the rear view mirror. I bet that car has real wood on it, too. Being on the Atlantic side as opposed to the Pacific, I wasn't around the surfing culture. I did have a copy of the movie poster for The Endless Summer flick which I did see cos of the ocean shots. I always love looking at the waves.
Well, the storm season is beginning to gradually wind down. YEAY! Still causing massive flooding up and down the East Coast. NYC is a disaster. They better get used to it. Climate crisis is the normal now, unfortunately. Anywho, here's hoping everyone is well. Rec'd!!
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
Hi, orlbucfan
On the interior shot, I like the all wood dashboard and interior door panels along with the surfboard shaped rear view mirror, and yes, it did have real wood, as did all the other cars there. Love The Endless Summer. Bruce Browns narration is priceless.

Hi obf
Only a few more weeks to go before you are safe.
The plant is the common Queen Annes Lace.
