Winning some war

open thread_72.jpg

Another round of really bad weather across the southland and severe thunderstorms in the mid Atlantic states challenging the climate change skeptics to explain their position.
I'm beginning to think of them as wishful thinkers much like the crowd that are convinced that Ukraine is winning and they will regain Crimea and the eastern oblasts any day now.
The dissonance is just amazing.
Just recalling the recent past where people flock to Death Valley to experience 131 degree temperatures only to suffer heat stroke and dehydration as a result of not having enough water and thinking nothing can go wrong with their car air conditioning.
It's called Death Valley for a reason. Duh.
An Oregon woman hiker was found dead in the Arizona desert as a result of extreme heat and she was a practicing nurse. Tragic as it is, what made her think she could go for a hike in 110 degree temps?
And this was just after two hikers who ran out of water were rescued by helicopter.
It's as though reason is on vacation all across America. Is there something in the water?
I spent 2 years working at Owens-Illinois Glass Co. in front of glass blowing machines where the temps reached 130 degrees shoveling molten glass. so I have a healthy respect for what extreme heat can do to the body, and I was only 19. Thank Dog for the salt pill dispensers every 20 feet. That and multiple layers of thick clothing to keep the moisture from wicking away from your body.
Serious public education is sorely needed to the dangers of extreme heat, especially if the climate continues to turn hot.
On that note, my experiment with Ruth Stouts method of massive mulching is paying off. It does indeed keep the weeds down, but much more importantly keeps the moisture in the ground through the hottest days. I keep about 5 inches of hay around the plants and trees.
Just pulled up one 50 foot bed of potatoes and harvested six 5-gallon buckets of them. Broccoli is still coming on strong and we have green beans almost every night.
Tomatoes are starting to ripen, and we have 100 foot of them. Plus, we still have another 50 foot of potatoes to harvest.
Food Bank is gonna love us.
Bees are plentiful, but we are really battling carpenter ants and everywhere we look there is a wasp nest.
Will spend a few days researching both and then return to the 3 acre battleground.

Yes Sam would have done the same thing. I’m taking her swimming this week.

Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

Dog at play. Haha
Makes me angry to see people walking their dogs in the heat across asphalt.
Dumb shits.

of day. When it’s hot I sit in the shade and let Sam play if she wants. She always jumps in the creek first chance she gets.

sounds like your efforts are playing out,
in spite of the weather extremes
the war for improvement is won one battle at a time

good luck and thanks for the OT!

earthling1. I use oak leaves/hackberry and other leaves and wood chips for mulch because that's what I have on hand from the yard. I do leave most of the leaves on the ground and rake up only the ones I need to use. Occasionally, I use hay, but I have to buy that. I have some Jerusalem artichoke under mulch. I don't know what's happening down there but will report when I find out.

Funny about your glass factory job. My dad worked for Libby-Owens-Ford glass factory when he was a teenager. To this day he is not a fan of hot weather.

I like to hike but you couldn't pay me to go on a hike in 114 degree temps.

This is a cool article https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2023/08/230803112920.htm
It's about butterflies and their high-tech answer to hot weather. They really know what they're doing!

where we put entertainers in the White House, destroy countries and call it "winning," and if there's a problem, our government encodes a bunch of money and hands it to rich people.

I will repeat the conversation I had at the Oregon Country Fair.

-- there was a woman there who had some sort of carbon tax proposal. I explained to her that, instead of trying to mitigate climate change while leaving everything else about society the same, we should ask ourselves what kind of society would be able to mitigate climate change, and then we should ask ourselves what we would have to do to get that kind of society. (The fundamentals of the argument can be found here, and the password to open the PDF is: AddletonAP2009 .)

She responded that my approach was the exact opposite of hers. I suggested, hoping to offer an olive branch, that she would be doing good by doing something, regardless of the content of what she was doing. I also offered, however, that I did not think climate change could be mitigated with criminals in charge. I gather she didn't like that.

The conversation seemed to have some bearing on the diary topic here.

@Cassiodorus
to that woman.
Just do something instead of talking about what someone else should do.
I've owned this property for 4 years now, and have turned it into a productive farm and have planted 58 trees, mostly along the salmon spawning creek that runs through it.
I've revived the bee population and ridded the land of invasive species of plants.
For decades now I have moved away from chronic consumerism. I haven't tried to keep up with the joneses for decades now, not since I bought my own drum march to.
Thanks for the pdf and a great post.

https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/08/moodys-cuts-ratings-of-10-us-banks-and-p...

Moody’s cut the credit ratings of a host of small and mid-sized U.S. banks late Monday and placed several big Wall Street names on negative review.

The firm lowered the ratings of 10 banks by one rung, while major lenders Bank of New York Mellon
, U.S. Bancorp
, State Street
, Truist Financial
, Cullen/Frost Bankers
and Northern Trust
are now under review for a potential downgrade.

Moody’s also changed its outlook to negative for 11 banks, including Capital One
, Citizens Financial
and Fifth Third Bancorp
.

Among the smaller lenders receiving an official ratings downgrade were M&T Bank
, Pinnacle Financial
, BOK Financial
and Webster Financial
.

“U.S. banks continue to contend with interest rate and asset-liability management (ALM) risks with implications for liquidity and capital, as the wind-down of unconventional monetary policy drains systemwide deposits and higher interest rates depress the value of fixed-rate assets,” Moody’s analysts Jill Cetina and Ana Arsov said in the accompanying research note.

“Meanwhile, many banks’ Q2 results showed growing profitability pressures that will reduce their ability to generate internal capital. This comes as a mild U.S. recession is on the horizon for early 2024 and asset quality looks set to decline from solid but unsustainable levels, with particular risks in some banks’ commercial real estate (CRE) portfolios.”

Bidenomics is a game changer and is progressing just like

the latest Ukrainian offensive.

I have a friend on Facebook who was looking to join other social media websites. He was just recently kicked off of Mastodon for advocating an immediate negotiated settlement in Ukraine.

@humphrey The German Nazis waged an genocide and ethnic war against European Jews and the Russians (Asians according to some in the West). The Ukr/West war against Russia has reached close to those levels of hatred. This is why I despair over any settlement as the West is invested in the deepest and ugly views that propelled German Nazis. So yah, the stereotypes of the backward ignorant Russian is just a playback to those days. And the democratic party shitlibs are the worst at pushing these themes.

is a very fitting description of those people who work for the western MSM. They are even more kinky than sex workers.

I chatted with my brother today, and he said our cattle rancher pals will have to start feeding their herd next month. Grass is turning brown. Expect beef prices to soar.
We talked about how these temperatures affect us now, when we did occasionally experience even higher temps when we were young.
He was 19, joined the Air Force, went through basic at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. The trainees marched, ran, dressed in dark uniforms, no covering on their shorn heads, and the rules said when the temp reached 115, they were to keep doing the drills, just at a walk. Think they would survive that today? Outdoor workers are dying at 102 deg. temps, and they are young and healthy.
I thought it was my age. If so, why are the young dying at much lower temps I survived, especially since I was not healthy until I reached middle age?
Well, I am doing last minute planning for my vacation, going from 2 days of 105 deg. highs, up into the mountains of NC with nightly lows of 58. I get exactly 7 days of escape from this oven.
Stay safe, all who are in this oven as well.
Thanks for the OT.
